THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD JANUARY 13, 2019

Cuando estaba creciendo, mi padre, Pete, nos llevaba a los niños a trabajar con él durante los meses de verano cuando estábamos fuera de la escuela. El tipo de construcción que hizo varió desde demolición, equipo pesado, tuberías y plomería. La última categoría, fontanería, fue el trabajo que más me disgustó, espe-cialmente si el trabajo involucraba un drenaje que ya existia. A menudo había ocasiones en que las tareas que los empleados se negaban a hacer se dejaban en manos del jefe y sus hijos. Siendo el niño más joven de la familia, muchos de estos trabajos sucios se me

quedaban a mí. En ese momento, pensé que esto era muy injusto. Sin embargo, soporté y acepté mi suerte en la vida por el ejemplo que dio mi padre. Cada vez que él estaba allí, Pete era el primero en hacer el trabajo sin importar lo duro o sucio que fuera. Mi padre nunca espe-ró de nosotros lo que primero el no haría por sí mismo. A pesar del hecho de que a menudo yo pensaba que esta-ba en el extremo receptor de hacer el peor trabajo, siem-pre tuve el consuelo de que la tarea que tenía ante mí era una tarea que mi padre haría o haría conmigo. De hecho, con la madurez llegué a comprender que la mayor parte del tiempo era mi percepción de que estaba solo haciendo los trabajos sucios, pero en realidad, estábamos todos juntos en ello. Cristo nos proporciona ese mismo ejemplo. Al entrar al mundo como uno de nosotros, al ser bautizado, sufrir la muerte y levantarse a una nueva vida en la res-urrección; ¡Lo que Dios ha hecho se espera de nosotros!

When I was growing up, my fa-ther, Pete, would take us boys to work with him during the summer months when we were out of school. The kind of construction he did varied from demoli-tion, heavy equipment, pipefitting, and plumbing. The last category, plumbing, was the work I disliked the most especial-ly if the task involved an already existing sewer. There often were times that tasks which employee refused to do were left to the boss and his sons. Being the young-est boy in the family, many of these dirty jobs would flow down to me. At the time, I thought it very unfair. However, I endured and accepted my lot in life because of the ex-ample my father gave. Every time he was there, Pete would be the first one doing the work no matter how tough or dirty it might be. My father never expected from us what he first would not do himself. Despite the fact that often I thought I was on the receiving end of doing the worst job, I always had the consolation that the task before me was a task my father would do, or do with me. In fact, with maturity I came understand that most of the time it was my perception that I was alone doing the dirty jobs, but in actuality, we were all in it to-gether.

Christ provides us that same example. By enter-ing the world as one of us, being baptized, suffering death, and rising to new life in the resurrection; what God has done is expected of us!

Baptism of Our Lord

Jesus, whom God called “my beloved Son,” is also the “servant” of whom Isaiah speaks in the first reading. We who are baptized in Christ must follow His example and use our time and resources in the service of God and neighbor.
