THE WATERS OF BAPTISM

When new sod is put in, it needs constant satura-on with water. Landscapers say that this “knits” the

sod to the soil. The same when a branch is gra ed on-to a tree: the poul ce that joins them at the splice must be kept wet at all mes. Water is the stuff that binds the very cells of our bodies together. No wonder religions throughout all mes and cultures have used it so prominently. When Jesus stepped into the Jordan for bap sm, he “knit” himself to what had come be-fore him. By going to the Jordan, he made himself one with the people of Israel who had crossed it into their Promised Land. With John the Bap st, Christ wove himself into the prophe c tradi on that heralded the coming reign of God. He had become fully human in the waters of Mary’s womb, and by partaking in the rite of the bap sm of repentance, Jesus iden fied himself with our sinful, frail humanity. It is through the waters of bap sm that Christ con nues to gra new members onto his Body, the Church; through these waters we are cleansed from sin and filled with the promise of grace, given our des ny for eternal life. For us, as for Jesus, it is also the waters of bap sm that inaugurate our mission to proclaim the Good News.

LIBRARY NOTES

A Time for Miracles [208ABC] is a DVD on the true story of Elizabeth Bayley Seton, or Mother Seton who in 1975 was canonized as America’s first na ve-born saint. She was a convert from the Episcopal faith and became a founder of schools, orphanages and hospital as well as the Daughters of Charity religious order. I Like Being Catholic [Treasured Tradi ons, Rituals and Stories]- edited by Michael Leach and Therese Borchard [291.3] is a deligh ul read to re-inspire your journey of faith. It brings together memories, thoughts and hopes of famous Catholics, ordinary parishioners, lapsed & good-enough Catholics like you and me. As we await the Super Bowl, you might want to try - “And God Said It’s Good!”- Gary Graf [269Gra] Genesis, the first book of the Bible, tells us that on the 7th day God rested. No doubt he was an cipa ng the me when he could kick back, relax, and watch football. On any given Sunday we can all be brought closer to spirit and sport, faith and football, God and the Gridiron.

Y dijo: “Dios no hace dis nciones”.
