Christmas, in all its forms

A ll of a sudden we are enchanted by Christmas,

darkness and light, music, emotions and memo-

ries. No matter how hard we try to resist, sooner

or later Christmas touches our souls. The proof is in the

Christmas markets. They all boast that they are

unique. The question is, if one is more beautiful

than the Christmas market in the Tallinn Town

Hall Square. Supposedly, with a Christmas tree

tradition dating  back to the 15th century, the

Town Hall Square market becomes even more magi-

cal with a snowfall. For a moment you are carried away to

a fairy tale world, surrounded by goodness and beauty.

After having visited Christmas markets around

Estonia you can enjoy a never-ending amount

of concerts in churches and concert halls. Once

again, they bring us into the world of fairy tales and

fantasy.

Christmas and charity go hand in hand. Read about Dr

P lötsligt trollbinds vi åter av julen;

mörkret och ljuset, musik, dofter,

stämning och minnen. Hur mycket

man än stretar emot når julen förr eller

senare själen. Ett säkert bevis för julens

ankomst utgörs av det stora antalet julmarknader som

alla skryter om att vara unika. Frågan är dock om det

finns något vackrare ställe än Tallinns julmarknad på

rådhustorget, enligt uppgift med julgranstradition sedan

1400-talet. Det hela blir än mer magiskt om och när det

snöar – då befinner man sig för ett ögonblick i sagans

värld. Man omsluts av godhet och det vackra.

Efter besök på Estlands många julmark-

nader kan man njuta av ett otaligt stort

antal konserter i kyrkor och konsertsalar

som även de för oss till sagans och

fantasins värld.

Kring julen skänker vi nödlidande en tanke. Läs om

Doktor Kloun som lyser upp vardagen för sjuka barna på

sjukhus i Estland. Du kan gärna bidra med en gåva.

Julen i alla dess former

My name is Claudio Richardson. I am half Italian and half English. I have been living in England for the last ten years, three of which were spent travelling around the world, primarily to China and gre-ater Asia because of my work. Tal-linn has now been my new home for 7 weeks and envision myself living here for the next three years, maybe even longer as I love the city of Tallinn and its Old Town and Estonia as a nation. I have become fascinated with the Esto-nian culture, its people and the cuisine. In fact, I am addicted to pirukad, so much so that I eat a few a day! With the Christmas season approaching I am really exci-ted to see how Tallinn will look with all the festive decorations and hopefully covered in romantic white snow! I am also looking forward to trying some traditional Estonian Christmas food, and maybe even some blood sausage.

Jag heter Claudio Richardson. Jag är hälften italienare, hälften engelsman. Jag har bott i Eng-land de senaste tio åren varav jag på grund av mitt arbetet reste världen runt under tre år, huvudsakligen till Kina och Asien. Tallinn har nu varit mitt hem i sju veckor och jag kom-mer enligt planerna att tillbrin-ga tre år här. Vem vet, kanske stannar jag längre eftersom jag älskar Tallinn med dess gamla stad och Estland som land. Jag är fascinerad av Estlands kul-tur, folket och maten. Faktiskt,

jag har till den grad blivit besatt av pirukad, dvs pirogerna att jag äter dem varje dag! Jag ser fram mot julen och hur Tallinn kommer att se ut med alla dekorationerna. Förhoppningsvis klär sig stan med ett täcke av romantisk vit snö! Jag ser även fram emot att smaka traditionell estnisk julmat och rentutav estnisk blodjulkorv!

■ KULTURHUVUDSTADSÅRET 15 MILJONER €Kulturhuvudstadsåret Tallinn 2011 har kostat skattebetalare i Estland 15 miljoner €. Mihail Kõlvart, vice-borgmästare i Tallinn säger att året varit framgångsrikt. Över en miljon besökare har tagit del av evenemangen.

■ FÅ UTLANDSESTER ÅTERVÄNDERFörra året lanserade Estlands Handelskammare och lokala företagare kampanjen ”Hem med talangerna” till en kostnad av 120.000 €. Syftet var att locka hem ester som bosatt sig utomlands.Hittills har bara ett fåtal nappat. Kulle Sakkeus, befolkningsspecialist säger att kampanjen har varit ålderdomlig i sin upp-byggnad. I stället för att locka med forsk-ning och så kallade kreativa näringar har man kört med traditionella branscher.

■ MER PENGAR FÖR FORSKNINGSSTIPENDIEREstlands Utbildningsdepartement har avsatt ytterligare medel åt landets forskare. Medel för långsiktiga insatser inom forsk-ning och utveckling ökade från 38.300€ till 40.000€. Prissumman till bästa forskare ökade från 826€ till 20,000€ och inom kate-gorin iögonenfallande upptäckter ökade beloppet från 47,900€ till 50,000€.

■ FÄRRE ALKOHOL-RELATERADE SJUKDOMAR ENLIGT NY STUDIEEnligt en nyligen publicerad rapport från Esltands Hälskoskyddsinstitut har antalet diagnostiserade sjukdomar som kan kopp-las till alkoholmissbruk minskat de senaste tre åren. Alkoholkonsumtionen per capita minskade under perioden från 12.1 liter till 9.7 liter. Behandlingskostnaderna för alko-holrelaterade sjukdomar, inklusive sjukfrån-varo uppgick till 2.3 miljoner € 2010, vilket är en minskning med 12% i jämförelse med 2009.

■ BILLIGARE HEPATIT-A VACCINLänsstyrelsen i Viljandi län har under hös-ten förhandlat med läkemedelsföretag om rabatterad hepatit-A vaccin för skolor och förskolor. Anledning är en ökning av antal hepatit-A fall i länet. Det första fallet rapporterades i februari. Fram till oktober rapporterades om sammanlagt 85 fall.

■ NYA FLYGPLAN OCH DESTINATIONEREstonian Air fortsätter under 2012 att byta ut sin Boeing 737 flotta mot splitternya och miljövänliga CRJ900. Bolaget har redan två sådana maskiner, ytterligare fem väntar på leverans. För att stärka bolagets positioner på närmarknaderna återupptar man under våren flygningar till Helsingfors och Riga med tre förbindelser dagligen till båda destinationerna På de flesta övriga des-tinationerna ökar man antalet flygningar avsevärt. Strategin går ut på att erbjuda täta förbindelser med mindre flygplan. Wien, Hannover och Jyväskylä är helt nya destinationer.

■ RYSK INVASIONHotell och nöjesetablissemang i Tallinn och östra Estland rapporterar om rysk anstorm-ning till nyår och den rysk-ortodoxa kyrkans julfirande. Estonian Air sätter in extraflyg till Moskva. Ett stort antal nöjesetablissemang anpassar nyårsprogrammet helt efter de ryska gästerna önskemål. Under senare år har antalet turister från Ryssland till Estland ökat kraftigt.

■ NYA BUSSAR TILL TALLINNTallinns bussbolag har slutit avtal med MAN Trucks & Bus AG om inköp av 35 nya bussar för stadstrafik. De första anländer våren 2012.

■ NYTT TURISTREKORDEnligt nuvarande prognoser kommer 1.5 miljoner besökare övernatta på Tallinns hotell och övernattningsställen under 2011, vilket är nytt rekord eller ca 17% fler än förra året. Av gästerna kommer drygt 40% från Finland, 10% utgörs av ryssar och 6% av tys-kar. Bidragande orsak till den positiva tren-den är kulturhuvudstadsåret Tallinn2011 och ett stort antal nya flyglinjer.

■ HÖGLJUDDA TURISTERInvånarna i gamla stan har på allvar tagit upp ständigt höga ljudnivåer från barer och restauranger som de menar stör nattf-riden. Ett av skälen till detta är rökförbud inomhus vilket innebär att festfolket går ut på gatorna.Vid ett möte mellan boende och restaurang- barägare kom man fram till att det inte går att hitta någon lösning på problemen, i alla fall inte på kort sikt!

■ CULTURE CAPITAL COSTS 15 MILLION €Preparation for the European Capital of Culture have cost taxpayers in Estonia 15 million €. Deputy Mayor of Tallinn, Mihhail Kõlvart says that this year has been a suc-cess. More than one million people have visited events in the program.

■ EXPATS SLOWLY RETURN HOMEA 120,000€ project called ‘Bring Talent Home’ was launched this year aiming to put expatriate Estonians in thouch with local employers in an attempt to get them to return to Estonia. Thus far, a small number of Estonians have returned. Population scientist, Kulle Sakkeus says that Estonia uses an out-dated approach that develops production and industry instead of science and creative industries.

■ INCREASE IN FUNDING FOR RESEARCH AWARDSAnnual awards given out by the National Science Awards Committee received extra funding from the Ministry of Education. The Long-term Achievement Award in Research and Development increased from 38,300€ to 40,000€, the Best Research Award from 826€ to 20,000€ and the Outstanding Discovery Award from 47,900€ to 50,000€.

■ FEWER ALCOHOL-RELATED DISEASES DIAGNOSED, STUDY SAYSA recent study by the National Institute for Health Development showed that the number of diagnosed alcohol-related dise-ases has dropped in the past three years. Per capita alcohol consumption dropped from 12.1 litres to 9.7 litres. Treatment costs of alcohol related diseases, including sick leave totalled 2.3 million €, down 12% from 2009.

■ DISCOUNT SOUGHT FOR HEPATITIS A VACCINEAfter the significant increase in incidents of cases of Hepatitis A in Viljandi County this year, its government initiated negotiations with pharmaceutical companies to find a discount for vaccines for schools and preschools. Since the first case reported this February in the Southern Estonian county, the number of cases rose to 85 by October.

■ NEW AIRCRAFT AND DESTINATIONSEstonian Air continues the replacement of its Boeing 737 fleet during 2012 with brand new and environmentally friendly CRJ900 jets. Two planes are already in service, five are waiting for delivery. In order to strengt-hen the positions on regional markets, flights to Helsinki and Riga will resume next spring with three daily services to each city. The number of flights to other destinations will increase as well. The strategy is to offer more flights with smaller aircrafts. Vienna, Hannover and Jyväskylä in Finland are new destinations.

■ RUSSIAN INVASIONHotels and entertainment establishments in Tallinn and Eastern Estonia expect a large number of visitors from Russia for New Year’s Eve and the Russian Orthodox Church

Christmas period. Estonian Air will add extra flights to Moscow to meet the demand. Many establishments will adapt their New Year’s program to the needs of Russians. In recent years, the number of tourists from Russia to Estonia has increased remarkably.

■ NEW CITY BUSSES IN TALLINNThe Tallinn bus company has signed an agreement with MAN Trucks & Bus for the purchase of 35 new city busses. The first ones are due to arrive in spring 2012.

■ RECORD FIGURES FOR TOURISMAccording to estimates, Tallinn hotels and overnight establishments will have received 1.5 million visitors in 2011, which is a new record or 17% more than last year. 40% of the visitors are made-up of Finns, Russians 10% and Germans 6%. Reasons for the positive developments are the Tallinn 2011 Cultural Capital year and many new air ser-vices.

■ NOISY TOURISTSCitizens in Tallinn's Old Town have raised concern over constant high noise levels from bars and restaurants, at night. One of the reasons for more noise is the smoke ban in bars, forcing party goers to gather on streets. A meeting between citizen repre-sentatives and bar owners did not bring any solution to the problem, at least not for the near future.

A Christmas Concert for EveryoneClassical or pop? In December, there are not many days

without a Christmas concert.

What is it?

The band has released two albums:The Hills Behind The Hills, 2009 and Good Man Down, 2011.

The Open Road to EuropeEwert and The Two Dragons are a

promising Estonian band who can afford to go abroad.

This year the band released their second album, Good Man Down, capturing the hearts of critics and fans alike.

 Their music is influenced by pop, folk and rock, but they are usually classified as indie folk music. (In The End) There's Only Love, their first radio hit from their latest album, has gained populari-ty in Latvia and Lithuania as well. The newest hit is the album's title track, Good Man Down, which also has a great music video where the band plays in the middle of the Estonian landscape. The song has an infectious chorus and an inte-resting bass line. The rest of the album is filled with other great songs, with beautiful guitar melo-

dies backed by fun drum rhythms and grandiose endings.

 This well-finished album has caused a bit of confusion in Esto-nia: a colleague of mine, asked if in fact the band was really from Estonia?

  The Dragons are travelling beyond the borders of Estonia. This autumn the band played in Germany, Sweden, Norway, Aust-ria and the Netherlands. The Dra-gons are also gaining momentum in Finland. ■

Skivan är rytmisk med melo-diska gitarrer i samklang med tummor och glada rytmer i

bakgrunden. Flertalet av låtarna blir bättre och bättre mot slutet.

Den smakfullt påkostade ski-van har skapat positiv förvirring i Estland. En bekant frågade om det verkligen handlar om en est-nisk grupp?

Gruppen har under hösten framträtt i Tyskland, Sverige, Norge, Österrike och Nederlän-derna, härnäst står Finland på tur. ■

Tartu male actors group Kau-nimate Aastate Vennaskond will perform on December 8 and 27 at the Tartu Athena Centre.

The hand bell orchestra Arsis will perform together with the Tartu hand bell orchestra in vario-us churches across Estonia from December 10 – 26 with a concert on December 26 at the Estonia Concert Hall in Tallinn.

The three tenors Mart Madi-ste, Urmas Põldma and Oliver Kuusik, accompanied by pianist Tarmo Eespere will perform on December 14 and 20 at the Esto-nia Winter Garden.

Ivo Linna, Maria Listra and Estonian Radio child singers will

perform well-known Christmas songs from December 14-27 in five locations including the Decem-ber 22 performance at the Kaarli church in Tallinn.

Vocal ensemble Noorkuu will put on a concert along with Rosanna Lints in eight different locations from December 15-27.

Opera soloist Annely Peebo, presenter/singer Mart Sander and the Bel-Etage Swingorkestra will perform in Jõhvi, Rakvere, Tartu and Tallinn from December 15-19.

Music star Hanna-Liina Võsa and opera tenor Oliver Kuusik will perform from December 15-30 for the Christmas Stars Tour, starting in Tallinn and finis-hing in Pärnu.

Opera singer Jassi Zahharov will perform together with the Tartu Boy’s Choir on December 15 at the Jaani Church in Tallinn, December 18 at the Kaarli Church and December 21 at the Peetri Church in Tartu.

The Tallinn Technical University’s Men’s Choir will per-form three concerts on December 16, 17 at Jaani Church in Tallinn

The boy’s choir can be heard on December 28 at the Jaani Church in Tartu and December 29 at the Jaani Church in Tallinn.

01 ROCK N’ ROLL AND SYMPHONY Estonia's most popular rock band, The Sun, will perform at four concert halls across Estonia together with the Estonian Youth Symphony Orchestra. The performance will include the band’s top hits along with specially composed songs for the tour. The band's lead singer Tanel Padar is also known from Eurovision. Concerts will take place in Pärnu, Jõhvi, Tartu and Tallinn from December 25-28.

02 A TRADITIONAL CHRISTMASThe Estonian Open Air Museum in Rocca al Mare will open a Christmas Village from December 16-18, which will include traditional foods and games. This village creates a special atmosphere with candle-lit log cabins and Christmas songs. Master craftsmen will be on-site talking about Christmas traditions.

03 GINGERBREAD MANIAThis year's theme of Gingerbread Mania is a time machine. At Pärnu mnt 6 from December 17 to January 8, various artist’s gingerbread creations will be on display. The artists' imagination is the only limit. In past years' events, more than 100 artists have taken part. It is anticipated that 300 kilograms of dough will be made.

04 HOWLING METALEstonian ethno-rock band Metsatöll’s new album, Howl, was released in November. Metsatöll means wolf in old Estonian. Check out the band’s music video for the song Küü on YouTube. CD release parties will take place on December 9 and 10 at the Tallinn Rock Café and December 17 at the Tartu Illusion Nightclub. The December 10 CD release will include two con-certs, starting at 16.00 and is suitable for the whole family.

05 CHRISTMAS CIRCUSClowns, camels, ponies, acrobats and ballerinas will be waiting for families in Tartu, Tallinn and Jõhvi on December 15, 17 and 18 at the Tartu Vanemuise Concert Hall, Tallinn Saku Arena and Jõhvi Concert Hall respectively. Tickets are on sale at Piletilevi.

03 PEPPARKAKSMANITemat för årets Pepparkaksmani är en tidsmaskin. På Pärnugatan 6 kan man mellan den 17 december och 8 januari beskåda olika konstnärers als-ter, allt gjort i pepparkaksdeg. Enbart fantasin sätter gränser. Under tidigare år har över hundra konstnärer deltagit. I år kommer det att gå åt 300 kilo pepparkaksdeg.

04 METALLISKT VARGASKRIMusikgruppen Metsatöll – flaggskepp bland Estland etno rockgrupper – gav i november ut en ny skiva med ett kort men kraftfullt vargaskri. Metsatöll betyder varg på gammal-estniska. Gå in på YouTube och lysna på låten Küü. Metsatöll uppträder den 9 och 10 december på Rock Café, varav den senare kl 16 är familjeföreställning. Den 17 december uppträder man på Illusion i Tartu.

Restaurang Olde Hansa i Tallinn var först med att intro-ducera riktigt rikliga festmåltider. Man erbjuder delikatesser så som de avnjöts i rika köpmannahem på medeltiden.

Dessa festmåltider – eller rättare sagt matslag - ingår i Olde Hansas meny under hela året. Kring jule-tid anpassar man menyn till den medeltida köpmannens firande. Julbordet består av hela 21 anrätt-ningar med medeltida inslag och traditionella julrätter. På menyn finns korv av hare, fläsklägg och som avslutning Hildegards efterätt.

Om man vill ha en riktigt bra uppfattning av medeltiden kan

man arrangera en medeltidskväll. Gästerna klär sig då enligt gällan-de mode och man blir introduce-rad till dåtidens seder och bruk. De festliga julmåltiderna går på 35 euro per person och man bör räkna med mist två timmar.

Estonians have a long agrari-an heritage, extensive knowledge of forest mushrooms, wonderful fish and wild game.

This is what the Tallinn Menu 2011 aims to show Tallinn visi-tors. With over 20 participating restaurants, each chef showcases local seasonal ingredients from Estonia’s forests, fields and waters.

We decided to visit Fish & Wine in Tallinn’s Old Town to taste their new fall menu. Fish & Wine’s Tallinn Menu 2011 featu-res three dishes. First to start, the red wine marinated quince and goat’s cheese tart with salted wal-nuts (8). As a second course, the pan-seared white fish fillet with porcini gnocchi and rosehip sauce (14). Then finally, for dessert, a roast cardamom curd with bitter orange syrup and a pepper tuile (4). The white fish was perfectly

cooked with crispy skin and deli-cate flesh. The porcini gnocchi was soft and creamy with a bold but not overpowering mushroom flavour. The rosehip sauce added a nice finish with its delicate flo-ral flavour that made its way into every mouthful.

“I don’t want to define Estoni-an cuisine,” says head chef, Riho Heinmets who took up residen-cy at Fish & Wine in the spring. “Estonian cuisine is often defin-ed by pork, cabbage and herring. While these are perhaps traditio-nal staples in the Estonian diet, we should not forget about the wonderful ingredients that grow wild in this country. That is what Estonian food is.” ■

Just detta erbjuds man genom Tallinn Menu 2011 ett samlings-namn för det estniska köket som ett antal restauranger enats om. Över 20 restauranger deltar. Varje kökschef plockar fram och kom-ponerar rätter av lokala råvaror från Estlands skogar, åkrar och vattendrag.

Vi beslutade oss för att besöka Fish & Wine i gamla stan i Tal-linn och prova deras nya höst-vintermeny. Tallinn Menu 2011 pü Fish & Wine består av tre rätter. Vi inleder med en rödvinsmarine-rad rosenkvitten och getost tar-telett med saltade valnötter (8). Som huvudrätt väljer vi the stekt filé av vitfisk med Karl-Johans-vamp gnocchi och nyponsås (14).

Vi avslutar med en rostad kar-demumma-pudding med bitter apelsinsås och pepparknäck som efterrätt (4). Fisken var perfekt tillredd med knaprigt skinn och mört kött. Porcini gnocchin var mjuk och krämig med en djärv men inte dominerande smak av svamp. Nyponsåsen bidrog med en svagt blommig smak till varje munsbit.

“Jag vill inte kategorisera det estniska köket,” säger chefskocken Riho Heinmets som tog över på Fish & Wine i våras. “Det estniska köket förknippas ofta med fläsk, kål och sill. Dessa utgör kanske basingredienserna i den estniska dieten men vi får inte glömma allt det underbara som växer vilt i våra skogar. Det är estnisk mat.” ■

Tallinn’s Town Hall Square is alive with a magical

Christmas Market.

The miracles begin with the country’s most important tree. The raising of the Christmas tree in Town Hall Square is a tradition dating back to 1441. The tree is selected early, brought from the forest and then decorated. A small village takes shape around the tree with decorated houses and the village slowly comes to life. It is no wonder that year after year this market falls into the category of one of Europe’s best.

From these little houses you can buy all kinds of handicrafts, many of which are not available in souvenir shops. And, most impor-tantly, you can talk to their crea-tors, who are making objects as you browse. You can also buy tra-ditional Christmas food and drink to warm the body and the soul. Listen to Christmas music. Admi-re snow sculptures. Children can enjoy the petting zoo and feed rabbits, goats, lambs, ponies and geese. Until a few years ago the market closed after the Catholic and Lutheran Christmas but now, thanks to increased interest from Russian tourists, the market lasts until the Orthodox Christmas.

Everyone who visits the mar-ket can meet Santa Claus who arrives at the Christmas tree in a sled pulled by reindeer. Anyone can visit his house, or put their Christmas wishes into the letter-box on the terrace. Children look forward to meeting him to share a poem or song in exchange for a gift.

Even if you have visited Tal-linn at Christmas before, there is always something new that has you feeling like you are experien-cing it for the first time! ■

Undret börjar med hela Est-lands viktigaste och mest kända julgran – alltsedan 1441 har man rest julgran framför Tallinns råd-hus. Trädet väljes ut tidigt, det transporteras från skogen och dekoreras. Runt granen växer en liten stad upp. Den består av små hus i estniska motiv och färglada kransar och girlanger. Och den underbara staden börjar leva sitt eget sagoliv. Inte utan orsak ham-nar man jämnt bland de bästa jul-marknaderna i Europa.

Från de små husen kan man köpa de mest olika hantverkspry-larna från hela Estland. Även så-dant som man i vanliga fall inte hittar i suveniraffärerna. Lika väsentligt är att man kan träffa mästarna bakom alla alster, allt är genuint hantverk.

På torget säljs även traditionell julmat och värmande drycker för kropp och själ. Julmusik spelas. Snöskulpturer byggs. Barnen glä-der sig över de levande djuren i små inhägnader, så som kaniner, små getter, killingar, ponnyhästar, gäss – och man får mata dem alla.

Bara för ett par år sedan stäng-de julmarknaden efter den lut-hersk-katolska julen, numera har man öppet en bit in i januari då den rysk-ortodoxa kyrkan firar jul. Inte minst känner det stora anta-let turister från Ryssland glädje över detta.

Än mer, alla som besöker tor-get har möjlighet att träffa tom-ten. Han anländer till granen med släde som dras av riktiga renar. Alla kan lämna in sina önsknin-gar till honom i hans lilla hus eller lämna ett brev med julklapps-önskningar i brevlådan på terras-sen. Men barnen läser alltid med glädje vers och sjunger en sång, allt med en liten darr på rösten – det handlar ju om en riktig jul-tomte. Därefter belönas de med godis av jultomten.

Även om man skulle passera julmarknaden ett antal gånger under jul-och nyårsfirandet så faller man likväl offer för den lilla julstadens förtrollning För att inte tala om alla dem som hamnar på julmarknaden för första gången. ■

Pärnu är känt för sina trevli-ga restauranger och kaféer, bland dessa vegetariska Mahedik och Café Supelsaksad. Den senare val-des i år som kandidat till Design Management Europe Award, dvs stället är värt att uppleva.

Man kan ägna tid åt Pärnus konstgallerier och museum. I december exponeras verk av est-niska textilkonstnärer på konst-museet.

Maarja-Magdaleena Gillet är stället för hantverk. I den under-bara och stora träbyggnaden finns föremål av lera, textilier och trä. En traditionell julmarknad arran-geras i gillets lokaler och i Steiner-trädgården den 17 december.

Kaydi Tomson som ansva-rar för isfestivalen utlovar nyhe-ter. "Vid Vallikääru vallgravarna uppförs ett is-slott, en snowbo-ard backe, skidspår och bana för sparkstöttingar. Nytt är även en ishockeyrink på vallgravens is.“

December fylls av musik

Nötknäpparsagan som fått inspi-ration från Ernst Theodor Ama-deus Hoffmans saga om Nöt-knäpparen och mus konungen återuppstår den 7 december på Barnens Hus (Lasteekraani Muu-sikastuudio) i Pärnu.

Vid Pärnu operadagar framförs Donizettis Lucia di Lammermoor den 9 december av St Peterburgs operateater. Vid galakvällen den 10 kan man avnjuta en mästerlig middag till ackompanjemang av älskade operaklassiker.

Den 17 december uppträder Estlands stora stjärna, operasån-gerskan och mångåriga solisten vid Volksoper i Wien, Anne-ly Peebo tillsammans med den begåvade musikern och charmö-ren Mart Sander med hans Bel-Etage-orkester. På programmet står populära julklassiker.

Rockmusikern Tanel Padar, kanske Estlands populäraste, bju-der på annorlunda julstämning med sin grupp The Sun den 25 december. Allt tillsammans med Pärnus symfoniorkester.

Året avslutas på traditionellt sätt, en konsert med Estlands statliga symfoniorkester. Solister är Etty Ben-Zaken från Israel och bandoneon-virtuosen Mario Ste-fano Pietrodarchi från Italien. ■

The winter days will pass quickly in one of Pärnu’s many art galleries and museums. The new art museum will exhibit Esto-nian textiles in December.

The Mary Magdalene Guild is a great place for handicrafts. In the large wood building you will find a huge selection of clay, textile and wood products. The annual Christmas Market will be held on December 17 in the Stei-ner Garden and the Mary Mag-dalene Guild.

The Pärnu Opera Festival will take place in December. The pro-gram includes the St. Petersburg Opera’s Donizetti Lucia di Lam-mermoor on December 9. Enjoy good wine and great opera clas-sics at the festive gala evening on December 10.

On December 17, Estonian star Annely Peebo will perform Christmas music in the Main Hall with Mart Sander and the Bel-Etage Orchestra.

Or, enjoy the alternative but equally as popular Tanel Padar & The Sun rock on December 25 with the symphony orchestra.

What is TaxiPal?TaxiPal is the Android, iPhone and Nokia QT (touch-screen

phones only) mobile application running on a platform that helps find taxis in more than 2,500 cities in the European Union (inclu-ding Switzerland and Norway) the U.S. and Canada. The database includes about 5500 taxi companies in 31 countries. The application download and use are free of charge.

 How does the application work?

The application finds the user's location and then generates a list of operating taxis. Beside each company is the taxi fare and other user's comments. You can then ring the company directly through the application. In the future, you will have the possibi-lity of ordering a taxi without making a phone call through the TaxiPal application by pressing the order button and entering your location and time of desired pick-up. This service will be useful to the hearing impaired. Non-native travellers will find this helpful with language barriers. The ordering button is currently active in 10 countries with participating taxi companies. ■

On the last Sunday of November, the mayor of Tallinn will light the first candle of the most important tree in Town Hall Square. Advent is the period befo-re Christmas.

Many Estonian families still fol-low this tradition, and bring home a tree for Christmas Eve. For Esto-nians, Christmas together with Midsummer are the most impor-tant holidays of the year.

Most people, even non-reli-gious Estonians go to church on Christmas Eve to get into the Christmas spirit. Afterwards, the family gathers to make a Christmas feast - roast pork, sauerkraut, potatoes, baked app-les, blood sausage and ginger-bread. Santa Claus visits and eve-ryone must read a poem, sing or dance to receive their gift. Nowa-days the elves help out and bring gifts throughout the month for children. This is a new traditi-on that began in America. It was sometime during the 1920s that a commercial was made featuring Santa Claus, which also aired in Europe.

  According to old beliefs, Christmas was associated with fertility. The word "Christmas" comes from ancient Scandinavian word meaning grain sheaf. There are many magical traditions sur-rounding sheaves of grain. The first sheaf was made at harvest and lasted until winter solstice. The farm owner would knock on the door and ask, "Can the sheaf come inside?" He would be ans-wered unanimously by all insi-de: "Ah! Yes!" The farm owner would come inside to pour beer in exchange for the sheaf. Then everyone would begin to feast. Food was left on the table all night because it was believed that the more food, the higher the yield the following year.

Christmas is a family holiday for Estonians and the New Year is welcomed with friends in true European style.

Throughout Estonia Christ-mas music plays and the mood is peaceful. But come New Year's Eve, all the restaurants, hotels and major squares are filled with fes-tive party-goers setting off fire-works and clinking glasses shou-ting: "Happy New Year!" ■

Magiska julkärvar och ett gott nytt år!

Jul- och nyårsfirandet börjar redan mot slutet av november i Estland.

Sista söndagen i november tänder Tallinns borgmästare det första ljuset i den imponerande julgranen på Tallinns rådhustorg.

Många estniska familjer gör likadant till jul, dvs man tar hem en gran. Förutom midsommar är julen årets viktigaste högtid i landet.

De flesta, även icke-religiösa, går till kyrkan till jul. Efter kyr-kan samlas familjen för att njuta av all julmat såsom skinka, surkål, bakade äpplen, blodkorv och pep-

parkakor. Jultomten kommer på besök och all måste läsa en dikt, sjunga eller dansa för att få en present.

Enligt traditionen kopplades julen till fruktsamhet. Ordet jul kommer från forn-skandinavis-ka och associerar till julkärve. Kärven förknippas med ett antal traditioner och magi. Den första kärven bands vid skördetid och bibehölls till vintersolståndet. Bonden knackade då på dörren och frågade: ”Kan kärven komma in?” Alla sade entydig: “Ja” Bon-den steg nu innanför tröskeln och

slog upp öl i utbyte mot kärven. Nu började festandet. Mat läm-nades förvisso på bordet. Man trodde nämligen att ju mer man lämnade, desto rikligare skulle skörden bli nästa år.

Julen är en familjetradition i Estland och det nya året välkom-nas på bästa europeiska sätt. Julens festande präglas av fridfull. Allt förändras dock till nyårsafton. Då fylls restauranger och hotell, plat-ser och torg med festande folk-massor som förbereder sig för smällare och skålande. Man öns-kar varann Gott nytt år! ■

Clowns HospitalsDr. Kloun illuminates lives and contributes to

the benefit of sick children in Estonian hospitals.

The business is led by Romo-la Vesker and was inspired by his daughter Mirt.

Are Estonians generous donors?Estonians do not donate emotio-nally but rather donate on prin-ciple. Lavish charity campaigns with heartfelt messages do not yield much support.

Contributions come from nothing other than the generosi-ty of private individuals. I believe that these donations often come from parents who have been at the hospital when Dr. Kloun has visited.

How did Dr.Kloun begin?My daughter Mirt once put on a clown play for her sick cous-ins. This improved their mood and then their condition impro-ved. Mirt’s clown-show at home inspired me to bring clowns to the hospital, including children's hospitals in Estonia.

Who are you working with?We work with children hospi-tals in Tallinn and Tartu, which means we are allowed to visit children with Dr. Kloun. Dr.

Kloun has a number of sponsors, and some sponsor through other services. Last year we received support from the Open Estonia Foundation / George Soros Foun-dation and this year we have been helped by the Finnish Hospital Clown Association and the Nor-dic Council of Ministers' repre-sentation in Estonia.

How do the hospitals help?Hospital personnel have sup-ported us through the years. Humour therapy in hospitals is not about a one-time phenome-non. It involves regular weekly

therapy and year round perso-nal care in addition to medical treatment. One factor behind the hospital's positive attitude is certainly the Dr. Kloun team. It is about dedicated people with good education. They are profes-sionals with a high level of ethics.

How are the performances created?They are usually improvised, depending on the department, children's age and mood.

Where do the ideas come from?Often they are born sponta-neously, from new situations that force us to find new approaches. And from clowns of course and programs suited to hospitals.

What issues do you address? Do you talk about the illness?We do not talk about illness. Dr. Kloun leaves that to the real doc-tors. The medical staff will inform the clowns of the children's con-dition. For example, if the child is deaf or blind, the clown will then know how to approach the child.

What themes are especially popular?Recent media events have been popular, like Dancing with the Stars and Estonian football.

How do the children react?Children respond immediate-ly and spontaneously through laughter. We are told that "kids mouths do not lie." Sometimes, the children want Dr. Kloun to put in even more effort, though this happens rarely.

Is there a particular memory that sticks out?We have had children who do not even want to leave the hospital because they had such fun with Dr. Kloun. A little boy wanted to marry a female Dr. Kloun, and a Dr. Kloun with a red nose and white coat named a little girl an angel. ■

Tallinn Wins E-Service AwardThe city of Tallinn has been awarded the European Public Sector Award as a result of its development of e-services. Tallinn was competing with 274 projects from 32 cities. Decisive factors were usefulness for citizens, sustainability and innovation.

More Green EnergyDuring the third quarter of 2011, appro-ximately 13% of all energy produced in Estonia was generated from renewable sources. Out of this energy, 67% came from waste, 21% from wind and 2% from hydropower. According to EU directives, renewable energy has to make up 15-20% of the total energy production in 2020.

Praise to EstoniaThe rating agency, Standard & Poor's (SP) praised Estonia and Ireland in the way the two countries managed the economic crisis. SP pays special atten-tion to factors as macro-economic balance, budget policy and competitive wage levels.

Prime Minister and Business Delegation to TurkmenistanThe Estonian Prime Minister, Andrus Ansip visited Turkmenistan at the end of November. He was accompanied by a business delegation. A double taxation agreement was signed. Contact bet-ween the countries is limited, although

from the Estonian side, there is an interest to main-tain relationships with former Soviet republics. Cooperation is especially intense between Estonia, Georgia and Moldova.

Tallinns stad har belönats med utmär-kelsen European Public Sector Award för sin satsning på e-tjänster. Tallinn tävlade tillsammans med 274 övriga projekt från 32 städer. Avgörande var medborgarnyt-tan, hållbarhet och innovation.

Mera grön energiCirka 13% av Estlands energiproduktion under tredje kvartalet kom från förny-elsebar energi. Av den förnyelsebara energin kom 67% från avfall och bio-massa, 31% från vindenergi och 2% från vattenkraft. Enligt EUs direktiv skall för-nyelsebar energi utgöra 15-20% av den samlade energiproduktionen år 2020.

Beröm åt EstlandRatingagenturen Standard & Poor's ger beröm åt Estland och Irland för sitt sätt att hantera den ekonomiska krisen. Det gäller bland annat balans inom mak-roekonomin, budgetpolitiken och det konkurrenskraftiga löneläget.

Kontakterna mellan de båda länderna är mycket begränsade men från estniskt håll fäster man vikt vid att hålla kon-takter med före detta sovjetrepubliker. Samarbetet är speciellt intensivt med Georgien och Moldova.

Är folk i Estland generösa givare?Folk i Estland är inte emotionella utan snarare principiella givare. Bildmässigt påkostade välgören-hetskampanjer med ett vackert budskap behöver inte inbringa något.

Bidrag dyker upp som från intet genom generositet från pri-vatpersoner. Min slutsats är att de dagar som Dr Kloun besökt barn på sjukhus skänker även deras föräldrar en penning.

Hur fick Dr Kloun sin början?Min dotter Mirt spelade en gång clown för sina sjuka kusiner. De tillfrisknade märkbart och kom på bättre humör. Mirts clown- föreställning hemma gav mig inspiration att introducera sjuk-husclowner även på barnsjukhus i Estland.

Vem samarbetar ni med?Vi har avtal med barnsjukhusen i Tallinn och Tartu, vilket innebär att vi har tillåtelse att besöka bar-nen med Doktor Kloun. Doktor Kloun har ett antal sponsorer, en del bidrar med pengar andra genom olika tjänster. I fjol fick vi stöd från Open Estonia Foun-dation/George Soros stiftelsen och i år har vi blivit hjälpta av de finska sjukhusens clownförening och Nordiska Ministerrådets rep-resentation i Estland.

Hur ställer sig sjukhusen till verksamheten?Sjukhuspersonalen stöttar oss och med åren har vi byggt upp ett förtroende. Terapi genom humor på sjukhus handlar inte om en engångs- eller modeföreteelse. Det handlar om återkomman-de veckoterapi av eget slag som visat sig vara till stöd inom gängse medicinsk vård. En bidragande faktor bakom sjukhusens posi-tiva inställning är säkert Dok-

tor Kloun-teamet. Det handlar om hängivna personer med god utbildning. De är proffs på en hög etisk nivå.

Hur byggs föreställningarna upp? Oftast måste man improvisera, allt beroende på avdelning, bar-nens ålder och humör.

Var kommer idéerna ifrån?Ofta föds de spontant, nya situa-tioner tvingar oss till nya grepp. Clownerna har givetvis utbild-ning för olika tekniker.

Vilka frågor tar ni upp, talar ni om sjukdomar?Vi talar inte om sjukdomar. Dok-tor Kloun överlåter sjukdomar åt riktiga doktorer. Sjukvårdsper-sonalen informerar clownerna om barnens tillstånd, till exempel om de är döva eller blinda så att clownerna vet hur de skall närma sig barnen.

Vilka teman är speciellt populära? Under senare tid har mediahän-delser varit populära så som Let’s Dance samt fotboll.

Hur reagerar barnen?Barn reagerar omedelbart och spontant genom härliga skratt. Det sägs ju att „barnmunnar lju-ger ej“. Barnen låter oss ibland veta att Doktor Kloun skulle kunna anstränga sig än mer för deras skull.

Berätta om någotspeciellt minnesvärt? Vi har haft barn som inte ens vill lämna sjukhuset eftersom de haft så skoj tillsammans med Doktor Kloun. En liten pojke ville gifta sig med en Doktor Kloun med röd näsa och en flicka kallade en clown i vit rock för ängel... ■

Worldwide Canadian sensation Cirque du Soleil comes to Estonia for the first time.

At the end of the year, visit the Saku Arena to see acrobatics, outstanding choreography and luxurious costumes. Music also plays a big part in the Cirque du Soleil performance. This circus tours around the world, visiting places like Tokyo, Disney World and Las Vegas. Saltimbanco is the

name of the show coming to Esto-nia and it features over 50 artists from 20 different countries. The Saltimbanco performance has been adapted many times and will be performed four times in Estonia. Tickets are 10-49 and are available at Piletilevi. ■

Tarja Turunen in/i Tallinn

This soloists’s European Tour will visit Estonia at the

end of January.

Tarja Turunen’s What Lies Beneath Final Tour 2012 will begin January 13 in the Czech Republic and end in early March in Milan - thankfully passing through Tallinn on the way.

Turunen rose to stardom with the band Nightwish from 1996-2005. Her career was interrupted by band scandals and disagree-ments with its other members. As a solo artist, Turunen has worked on many different projects inclu-ding, performing with opera stars and singing for a Scorpions album.

Turunen’s solo albums have sold well. The album, My Winter Storm went gold in Germany. Her second album, What Lies Bene-ath, released last year, was very well received on both sides of the Atlantic. The WLB Tour comes to Tallinn at the end of January to the Rock Cafe, and tickets will cost 23-31 from Piletilevi.

Tarja Turunen’s What Lies Beneath Final Tour 2012 inleds den 13 januari i Tjeckien och avs-lutas i mitten av mars i Milano. Dessutom har hon lagt in Tallinn i programmet.

Turunens väg mot stjärnhimlen tog sin början i bandet Nightwish mellan åren 1996 – 2005 där hon slog igenom med sin klara stäm-ma. Som soloartist har Turunens karriär spänt över ett brett regis-ter, både tillsammans med ope-rastjärnor och med gruppen The Scorpions.

Turunen har rönt framgångar med sina soloalbum både i Finland och på andra marknader. Albumet My Winter Storm blev guldskiva i Tyskland. Hennes andra album What Lies Beneath från förra året togs mycket väl emot på båda sidor av Atlanten. ■ Day and evening (23.00–6.00) taxi fares can vary. Each taxi company has their own rates. Every taxi must display driver information and photo.

■ For example, a one-way ride starting at Viru Hotel and lasting approximately 1.5 km should cost about 6€. With traffic congestion, the amount may be higher.

■ It pays to be careful when choosing a taxi, because some companies have much higher rates that the standard rate. Taxi prices are displayed on the right rear window and on the vehicle’s dashboard. The minimum fee must be displayed on the price list, as well as the rate per kilometer and

standing rate. The cost of the trip is always the displayed taximeter rate, as an ‘agreed rate’ will not always

be honoured. Taxi drivers must print a receipt. If for some reason the taxi driver does

not offer a receipt then the passenger is not obliged to pay. If you feel that

Parking tickets can be purchased from a

kiosk or in select stores. Parking tickets must

state the year, month, day, hour and minute

of purchase.

Shopping malls are equipped with auto-

matic teller that accepts coins. In Tallinn,

most parking lots are paid.

Parking fines vary. Failure to pay for park-

ing may result in a fine of 20. If the parked

car is obstructing traffic, the fine will be 64

with the possibility of it being towed. In this

case, please contact the city police 14410.

Unpaid fines do not go away, even if you are

overseas. Unpaid fines may triple in value.

In Tallinn, the city is divided into several sections. In the

city centre, 185 hotspots can be found, and most of them are

marked in green meaning that they can be used free of charge.

The Viru Shopping Centre, as well as many hotels and bars

also offer free connections. In some places, a password may

be required to access the free network.

Many cities including Tallinn, offer their guests and resi-

IN THE OLD TOWN:

■ The watchtowers of Suur-Kloostri and Väike-Kloostri allow access to Nunna Tower and from there, access to Sauna Tower and Kuldjala Tower.

■ Town Hall Square (Raekoda). Northern Europe’s best-preserved medieval town hall square was built at the beginning of the 1400s.

■ Built in 1246, St. Catherine’s Monastery (Püha Katariina klooster) is the oldest building in Tallinn.

■ Mustapeade House. Built in 1399 for the Brotherhood of Blackheads and is Tallinn’s only renaissance building.

■ The Town Hall Pharmacy (Raeapteek) is one of Europe’s oldest pharmacies, which still operates in its original location in the Town Hall Square.

OUTSIDE OF THE OLD TOWN:

■ Freedom Square (Vabaduse väljak). This square holds great symbolic importance and is located just south of the Old Town. The pillar located at the edge of the square, consists of a large pedestal with the Cross of Liberty (Vabadusrist) placed on top. This monument reads: “Estonian War of Independence 1918–1920”. On its other side in a the Freedom Bell (Vabaduse kell).

■ Kadriorg Park. This area houses the Presidential Palace and the palace of Peter the Great, where today the KUMU Art Museum stands. There are plenty of other things to see as well, in this beautiful and prestigious park. From the Kadriorg Palace head straight along the park trail to the Rusalka monument, located at the shore of the Gulf of Finland.

■ The Tallinn Song Festival Grounds (Tallinna lauluväljak). Built in 1960, this amphitheatre can hold more than 30 000 singers. These grounds played an important part of the process that led to the restoration of Estonian independence, the initial phase in the Singing Revolution.

■ The Ruins of St. Bridget’s Convent (Pirita Klooster). Located near Pirita Beach, this monastery was built in 1407 during the Swedish occupation. The convent was destroyed by Ivan the Terrible’s troops in 1577.

■ The Tallinn Botanical Gardens. 4,500 varieties of plants and 123 hectares of greenhouses, and parks, the Botanical Gardens are an oasis in the summer and winter.

■ Tallinn Zoo. Approximately 90 hectares, this zoo houses many rare species as well as many large mammals, including elephants, polar bears, chimpanzees and rhinoceros. Located opposite the Rocca al Mare Shopping Centre.

A Brief History of Estonia

10,000 BC The Ice Age ends and people arrive in the territory of Estonia.

11th Century The main source of subsistence is agriculture and the provincial government is formed.

1200s The Livonian Brotherhood of the Sword is formed in Southern Estonia and the Danish occupy Northern Estonia.

1343 St. George’s Night uprising. Estonian peasants rise up against the occupiers with modest success.

1346 Denmark sells land in Estonia to the Teutonic Order.

1558 Ivan the Terrible of Russia goes to war against Livonia, when Estonia comprised part of Latvia. The war began in 1853 and included Denmark, Sweden and Poland. Estonia and Latvia were divided among Poland (Latvia and Southern Estonia), Sweden (Northern Estonia), and Denmark (Saaremaa).

1600s Schools are set up and the University of Tartu (1632) is under Swedish rule.

1700–1710 The Great Northern War inflicts fruitless years of famine and plague. The population decreases from 350,000 to 100,000.

1710 Tallinn and Uusikaupunki belong to Russia after the Treaty of Nystad.

1800s The power of the Tsar dimin-ishes, serfdom is abolished and peasants are given the right to purchase land (1860). In 1914, half of the land belongs to the German nobil-ity. Political power remains in the hands of the nobility.

1917 With the fall of the Russian Empire, Estonia receives autonomy. Estonia organises elections and Konstantin Päts becomes head of govern-ment.

1918 Germany occupies Estonia. The Estonian Provincial Assembly declares Estonia’s independence on February 24. Estonian forces fight against German and Russian forces.

1919 Estonian War of Independence continues and ends on 02.02.1920 in Tartu.

1920 The first formal law of Independent Estonia is made to expand democracy. Many small political parties are formed.

1929–35 The economic and political crisis of 1929-35 results in a state of emergency and a dis-bandment of the parliament. Päts rules by decree.

1937 A new constitution is written, 1938 Päts becomes president, there is a return to constitu-tional governance, but full democracy is not reached prior to the Soviet occupation.

1939 The German-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact is signed. On September 28, Estonia is forced to allow the Soviet Army to set up military bases in Estonia.

1940 “Elections” are held, after which Estonia becomes a Soviet Republic (27.7.) and merges with the Soviet Union.

1940–41 The Germans occupy Estonia. Nearly 70 000 Estonians join the German army. In September 1944, the Red Army sweeps in on Estonia again.

1944–91 Estonia is Soviet Estonia. Near the end of 1944, a large part of the population flees abroad. About 10,000 men (The Forest Brothers) will con-tinue to fight.

1948–25,000 Estonians are deport-ed to camps in the east. In 1940 the Estonian population was estimated at 1.1 million, but by 1949 it had decreased to 850,000.

1955 Over 200,000 non-Estonians move to Estonia. In 1980, more than 60% of the population is Estonian.

1987 An attempt is made by Estonians to break from the Soviet Union. There are demonstrations, including the environmental campaign against opening large phos-phorus mines in Virumaa.

1988 The Singing Revolution, Estonia declares its sover-eignty on 16.11.1988.

1991 Estonia regains independence on August 20 after the failure of the coup d’état in Moscow.

2004 Estonia joins the European Union and NATO.

2011 The Euro replaces the Crown, used since 1992 as currency.

The name Tallinn originates from the Danish occupation (1219–).

1285 Tallinn joins the Hanseatic League.

1346 The Danish sell Tallinn to the German Order. Toompea was divided amongst princes and bourgeoisie in the upper-town and craftsmen in the lower-town.

1561 Tallinn goes to the Swedish.

1721 The Russians conquer Estonia and Tallinn.

1918 Estonia declares independ-ence and Tallinn becomes its capital.

1939–44 Russians and Germans occupy Tallinn.

1944 The Soviet Army bombs Tallinn in March and causes extensive damage. 1400 people are killed.

1944–1991 Tallinn becomes a Soviet capital and hosts the sailing competitions of the 1980 Moscow Olympics.

1991 Tallinn becomes the Estonian capital. In 1997, it is declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

2011 Tallinn is the European Capital of Culture along with Turu. Its population is estimated at 411,000: 53% Estonians, 38% Russians, 9% Other.

Tallinn city transportation tickets can

be purchased in advance from kiosks

or directly from the driver. One hour,

three-day and five-day tickets are

available. Tickets must be validated at

the beginning of the journey. Persons

travelling without a ticket are subject

to a 40€ fine. Persons 65 years of age

or older may ride for free.

for luggage. The bus stops at various hotels, main attractions
