SHAPING THE DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION
Digitalization is on everyone's lips. It affects us all - and ensures a profound change in all our areas of life, whether privately but above all for us as a medium-sized company. With this article, I would like to explain our perspective as Badger Meter and point out which digital strategy we at Badger Meter Europa are aiming and have already aimed in the area of
"Industry 4.0". We see the so-called digital transformation as an enormous challenge but also as an opportunity for a new and innovative business model and an efficient business along the entire value chain. Yet
"Industry 4.0" is not an end in itself.
At the center of this development is the human being. Making machines, sensors and flow meters smart, building networks, making data available in the cloud at any time, making it easier to connect systems, to create analyzes and to optimize the process chain of any plant system. We at Badger Meter have started this development here years ago and the probably most pioneering product is our "smart" ultrasonic water meter with BEACON® software. This product meets the expectations of a user in terms of performance, measurement accuracy, data access and analysis.
Whereas in the past we were merely a manufacturer of innovative flow meters, we took innovative steps with the development of new measuring devices and the BEACON® software. Today, with BEACON® a software is available to the user, offering cloud-based data of historical, current and forecast data online and consequently detects irregularities
and forwards the resulting action. Measurement data logging, analysis, forecast, adaptive incident detection are available in one single package at any time. Badger Meter offers even more examples of a future-oriented digital solution in the product area. This includes our new SOLOCUE® programming platform, in which all our measuring devices will work with a software platform in the future, or our online RCVcal valve sizing software. In addition to the digital product offensive, we have also already raised the digitization in sales and communication with customers and partners to a completely new digital level with our website and social media pages.
We will continuously optimize this ongoing process in digital communication with customers and users. The aim of the entire digital transformation at Badger Meter Europa GmbH is to make internal processes even more efficient and to achieve greater productivity and efficiency with intelligent production processes, while achieving greater flexibility at the same time. Digitization enables us to consider individual customer requirements and to develop entirely new industrial products in future for "smart metering", which will also give us the possibility of new business models. Digitalization is already eminently shaping the way we live, communicate, work and economize. The digital transformation is not just an economic-technological process, but also of macrosocial nature.
We, at Badger Meter Europa GmbH, are prepared for the so-called fourth industrial revolution. After mechanization, electrification and automation, we will also implement the digital transformation. The development and integration of digital technologies make automated production processes flexible and efficient. Value chains, production processes, business processes and communication are changing due to the digitization. Cloud technologies simplify the exchange of even large amounts of data, and control and organization of in-house processes will change. Let's take the challenge. Let's look at it as an opportunity for the future.

RTR REGISTER HAS REACHED ITS END OF LIFE
As product life cycles go, the Recordall®
Transmitter Register (RTR) has been one of the most successful products Badger Meter has ever sold. With its release in 1996, the RTR has been the industry standard for quality, reliability and high resolution output. And with over 10 mil-lion RTR’s sold as part of a walk-by, drive-by or fixed network solution, the RTR has transformed the water industry and successfully driven competitors to design
new encoders as a way to compete. While the RTR has served it customers well, the product and technology applied in the water utility industry is over 20 years old. Customers deploying systems today are looking for even higher resolution reading data and extended alarm conditions that can only be provided through the latest ILR and HRE encoders. We will keep RTR registers in the next 18 months on stock for you.

BADGER METER INSTALLS FLOW METERS IN THE EMIRATES TOWERS
The Emirates Towers is a building complex in Dubai that contains the Emirates Office Tower and Jumeirah Emirates Towers Hotel.
The two towers, which rise to 355 m (1,165 ft) and 309 m (1,014 ft), respectively, stand as the 42nd and 100th tallest buildings in the world. The two towers are connected by a 9,000 m² (96,875 ft²) two-storey retail complex known as "The Boulevard". The Emirates Towers complex is located on the Sheikh zayed Road in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and is a symbol of the city of Dubai. A curiosity of the design is that the towers have a similar number of floors; the taller office tower actually contains 54 floors, while the hotel tower contains 56 floors.
This is because the individual floor heights of the office tower are greater than that of the hotel. The Emirates Towers complex is set in over 570,000 m² (42 acres) of gardens, with lakes, waterfalls and public seating areas. Badger Meter has recently supplied several ultrasonic meters for the office tower. The purpose of the meters are to measure the BTU / KWH consumption. There is a Badger BTU meter installed on each floor of the building and they are also installed at header main lines.

BADGER METER'S CUSTOMER EMPOWER COOLS DUBAI’S SEVEN PRESTIGIOUS BUILDINGS
»Seven of the 10 most beautiful and uniquely-designed buildings in Dubai are served with the district cooling system provided by the Emirates Central Cooling Systems Corporation, Empower, the world’s largest district cooling services provider.«
»These buildings were chosen by the UAE newspaper Emarat Al Youm and real estate website AqaratDubai.ae as among the top 10 most prominent landmarks in Dubai.
Empower has announced that the Burj Al Arab, Raffles Hotel Dubai, Jumeirah Beach Hotel, Atlantis The Palm, DIFC – Gate Building, Emirates Towers, and JW Marriott Marquis Hotel Dubai preferred to use district cooling, rather than con-ventional cooling, and have entrusted Empower to provide the services.
The use of district cooling in buildings has become a central part of the construction planning and design, as more property developers realise the value of energy-efficient technologies in delivering a less expensive and a greener built environ-ment.
"We are proud to provide services for the most prominent landmarks in Dubai and its most beautiful buildings. Moreover, it is equally important to highlight the inter-nal works that go with the other aspects of the building, particularly their cooling methods. District cooling makes the build-ings truly deserving of their titles, given it consumes less water and electricity, amid the global call for reducing carbon dioxide emissions from energy use," said Ahmad Bin Shafar, CEO, Empower.
Studies show that district cooling can save approximately 50 percent of the energy used for cooling, compared to conventional methods, which makes the system one of the major energy efficiency accel erators in the world, as declared by the United Nations led initiatives on energy efficiency.
The system is cost-efficient and also saves on resources.
Market research has revealed that the global market for district cooling solutions could grow from US$5.14 billion in 2016 to $9.54 billion by 2021 at a compound annu-al growth rate of 13.19 percent from 2016 to 2021. From an economic perspective, rising energy prices, growing environmen-tal concerns and increasing awareness on low-cost and highly efficient cooling sys-tems are major drivers for their growth.

FLEXIBLE AND RELIABLE SOLUTION FOR DOSING LOW FLOW RATES OF REFINERY FEED STOCKS AT ELEVATED PRESSURES
“The removal of nitrogen and sulfur from refinery feedstock is one of the most critical processes in the production of transportation fuels. The global trend towards increasingly-stringent emissions standards places a great burden on refiners and catalyst suppliers to develop new and improved hydrodesulfurization (HDS) and hydrodenitrogenation (HDN) catalysts and processes. ILS was approached by a major Euro-pean refiner to develop a highly flexible, 6-parallel testing unit capable of perform-ing benchmark testing on HDS and HDN catalysts. The client specified that the unit had to be capable of operating with a wide variety of feedstocks ranging from light components like straight-run gasoil (SRGO) up to much heavier and viscous vacuum gasoil (VGO). The latter requires heating the dosing section to above 100°C to reduce the feed viscosity sufficient to pump.
Very low-feed flowrates on the order of 0.1-5ml/min and high pressures of up to 200 barg were required as well. The pres-ence of sulfur- and nitrogen-containing organics places additional constraints on the choice of elastomers as classic seals like Viton will typically degrade with these feedstocks. Badger was able to provide fine-dosing valves for this application, capable of cov-ering this viscosity flow-range. By using recycle membrane pumps to generate the necessary pressure head and controlling the Badger valves in combination with Coriolis mass-flow controllers, ILS could provide a robust dosing solution to this client providing maximum flexibility and reliability.
Additionally ILS was able to use Badger valves for precise liquid level control in the stripping section of this unit. By using Badger valves both in the upstream feed section and downstream stripping section, the client has a solu-tion which can easily be maintained and service, requiring a minimum number of replace ment parts on stock. Close collaboration with Badger’s competent service group was elemental to the successful implementation of this solution. The unit has been successfully commissioned and the client is very pleased with the performance.”

REVIEW ANNIVERSARY WEEK45 YEARS BADGER METER EUROPA AND 10 YEARS LOCATION IN NEUFFEN
Badger Meter GmbH has existed success-fully for 45 years. In 1972 it was founded as a marketing office in Stuttgart, followed by a move to Beuren in 1995 because the business premises were too small and by the final the move in 2007 to the current location in Neuffen, where by now two structural extensions have settled the location. Badger Meter Europa had many reasons to celebrate – even enough for a whole week.
On the first day, June 26, 2017, we welcomed our suppliers and the press as our guests. 25 representatives came and started the day with a pretzel breakfast. The new image film was shown, followed by informative presentations about the company, the products and forecasts for the further development of business relations. All participants received a tour through the office premises, which was received with great interest. After the tour, a lunch buffet was provided to maintain energies. A lecture on "Economy in Times of Change", given by the guest speaker Mr. Senol Kilicasian, Department Director Private Banking at the Kreisspar-kasse Esslingen-Nürtingen, completed the event.
From the 2nd day and for the rest of the week, we welcomed 80 distributors from 33 countries as our guests. Until Friday, the days were filled with seminars on new products and information exchange.
The participants enthusiastically accepted the supporting program with a welcome dinner, a Porsche factory tour and visit to the Porsche Museum, as well as a trip to the Hohenneuffen Castle.
The highlight took place on Thursday evening: a gala dinner with the Distributor Awards for special achievements. With the presentation of the awards, Badger Meter Europa also wishes to send a signal that performance, commitment and company loyalty are not taken for granted. It was a special privilege and joy to honor our outstanding distributors.
Richard A. Meeusen, Chairman, President and CEO of Badger Meter Inc., USA, and Dr. Ing. Horst Gras, Vice President of Badger Meter Europa GmbH anchored the award show. 27 of our distributors received their awards, excelling in their sales territories, meeting their contractual arrangements, exceeding targets, or working hard to position themselves in the market, given the country's specific circumstances.
On Saturday, July 1, 2017, the company opened the doors for family members of employees on the family day. Each employee had the opportunity to guide their family through the entire building. A carousel made its spins for the youngsters and was a hit for the minis. A dinner and sit-together in the marquee concluded this informative day.
On the last "celebration day", Sunday, 2 July 2017, an "Open House" took place, which also gave the general public an insight into the business premises. Many visitors gladly accepted this offer and were very pleasantly surprised. They admired the bright, friendly office space with its diverse plants. Jazz lovers were highly entertained at the morning drink in the hosted marquee. The Hot Jazz Revival Band lived up to its name.
For the little ones, the carousel was spinning around on this day too and a few steps further a Porsche exhibition could be gazed at in the outdoor area.
The Badger Meter Europa apprentices and students of the dual university program organized face painting for children and a “Badger Café” where they sold cakes and drinks. They also organized an informa-tion desk about educational possibilities at Badger Meter Europa. The proceeds from the “Badger Café” and face painting was donated to a charity for children and young people with cancer (Förderverein für krebskranke Kinder Tübingen e.V.).

BADGER METER TRAINEES AND STUDENTS PRESENTED PROJECT-PROCEEDS TO THE CHARITY FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE WITH CANCEROn July 19th, 2017 the Badger Meter Europa GmbH trainees and students presented a donation which was generated from the proceeds of their project "Badger Café" at the Badger Meter Europa Open House Day.
Mr. Simschek, deputy chairman of the charity for children and young people with cancer (Förderverein für krebskranke Kinder Tübingen e.V.), received the cheque totalling 3500 Euros at Badger Meter Europa.
Our newly graduated apprentices also provided Mr. and Mrs. Simschek with a guided tour of the company. The company hopes that the donation will support the charity by helping not only the children, but also their relatives and friends in dealing with the disease.

SUHAEB AL DGHYM FROM SYRIA AND HIS WAY TO BADGER METER EUROPA
Suhaeb Al-Dghym told us his story of how he came to Germany and to Badger Meter Europa. After he graduated in his home-town of Daraa, in the south of Syria, he went to the capital, Damascus, to study business administration at the University of Damascus.
Since study courses were very theoretical, he volunteered to complete numerous internships. Due to the poor labor market situation in Syria, he subsequently worked in Dubai for six months after completing his studies in 2010. However, after that, Syrian nationals were no longer granted a visa for Dubai, which is why he went to Saudi Arabia for two years, where he worked in a construction company. This was followed by 8 months as an inter-preter in Egypt and one year of work at the reception of a candy store in Jordan, where his parents and siblings still live.
In 2015, he made the decision to go to Europe and started his path by trave-ling from Jordan to Turkey. From there he took the dangerous route by boat to Greece. Many stations followed passing Macedonia, Serbia, Hungary and Austria. He traveled partly by bus and train, but he also tells us about several large distances, that he covered on foot. One of them, within Greece, was over 50 kilometers long.
That was why his entire luggage consisted of simply his purse and his mobile phone. In August 2015, he finally reached Munich and from there he was sheltered in a reception camp in Ellwangen in the first place. After that, he spent some time with many other refugees in a sports hall in Kirchheim unter Teck.
Above all, he was hoping from fleeing to find work and peace. Therefore, Germany was his first choice destination from the very beginning, as he remembered the words of our Chancellor Angela Merkel and the open-minded government that welcomed the refugees at that time.
It was also a friendly and open-minded family from Kirchheim, which put Suhaeb Al-Dghym up for six month and supported him in starting his new life in Germany.
Of course, he also heard about negative experiences of other refugees who came across a lot of antipathy on the part of some German residents, which is why he is even more grateful for the family, who supported him. He still likes to spend time with the family and goes regularly jog-ging or hiking with the father. They also made him become acquainted with the traditional Swabian food Spaetzle with sauce, which he now loves, although he also misses the food from his homeland.
After a 4-week internship, we welcomed Suhaeb Al Dghym from Syria as a new employee at Badger Meter Europa in July 2017. Since then he has been supporting our export department with his bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Damascus. Of course, we were very interested in his background and the experiences he has made on his path to the new beginning in Germany.
He also misses his hometown, his friends and the good weather in Syria. At the same time, he enjoys Germany’s breath-taking nature, hikes to the castles Teck and Hohenneuffen, the fresh air and the colorful autumn, what he has not known before.
He sees differences to his homeland espe-cially in the language, because he still struggles sometimes with the German one but we think that he is already doing quite well, considering that, he has only been here for two years. He also sees big dif-ferences in work efficiency. He says that Badger Meter Europa has a great system everyone can work with easily, whereas he was used to a lot of chaotic paper work. Generally, he enjoys working here with us a lot and he appreciates the nice and sup-portive colleagues, who are always open to questions and willing to help him.
He is very happy here in Germany and hopes that he has finally found a place, where he can stay and eventually start a family at some point. Because even if the war in Syria will eventually end at some day, says Suhaeb Al-Dghym, it could still take many more years until the country is stable enough for living. We are very glad to have Suhaeb Al-Dghym in our team and being able to help him building a new life in Germany. We wish him all the best for his future.

Every drop counts – even raindrops. To protect dry clothes from April showers, it is advisable to take along a large umbrella, but also to wear a waterproof rain jacket. Both are available in our merchandising shop. Badger Meter Europa's new umbrella is not just equipped with our logo, but also with a second red layer, which protects the umbrella from gusty winds.

Marianne aebersold began working at the REMAG AG company on November 1, 1992. Her first tasks in the job were the completion of the correspondence of the former director in German, French and English. Emails did not exist yet; the post office as well as fax transmission were the standard at that time. Over the years, additional tasks were added, general cor-respondence, accounting and administra-tion.
Another milestone was for sure the sale of REMAG AG to Badger Meter Inc. Despite many new challenges and structural changes, Ms. Aebersold remained loyal to the company. We want to thank Ms. Aebersold for her commitment, her ideas and her loyalty. For the future, we wish her good health, happiness, success and a lot of enjoyable work.

Already in the seventies, Badger Meter, Inc. sold mechanical lube meters in small quantities in Europe via various distributors. The breakthrough in Europe began in 1978 with the foundation of the company Lubex. Lubex had three shareholders when it was founded in 1978: Patrick Larbuisson from Belgium, Yamada from Japan and Alentec-Orion from Sweden.
The aim of this organization was the sale, distribution and service of oil supply equipment in the international market with mainly four product lines.
• Pumps and hose reels from Yamada• Pumps from Alentec Orion• Lube meters from Badger Meter• Petrol pumps and meters from Fill-Rite
Almost at the same time, the marketing office of Badger Meter Europa was founded to support the activities in the lube sector with a representative office in Europe. As early as 1980, Badger Meter sold more than 20,000 lube meters on the European market.
LUBE METERS WERE THE BEGINNING OF BADGER METER EUROPA
» Badger History
Another milestone in the development of lube measurement technology was the development of the first oil management system MS500. The detection, control and dispensing of lube via an oil management system revolutionized car repair work.
At the same time, Badger Meter Europa developed a new generation of oval gear meters with inexpensive digital electronics. This product was the first group product that was completely produced in Europe. Today we can proudly say that more than 4 million lube meters and more than 15.000 oil management systems have been sold on the international markets of automotive workshops. Even today, lube measurement technology is still a key production segment of Badger Meter Europa. New innovative ideas secure our leading position in world markets.
