If you think about it objectively, it really should be simple mechanics: Your body is a machine. It needs fuel to run. When the tank is empty, it needs to be filled up so it can keep going. The better the fuel, the better the performance. Easy theory to grasp, right? Not so much in real life. It may be that we overthink how/what/why we are eating. Some drivers follow highly specialized diets and rigid meal schedules. Some eat to fill their emotional fuel tank. Over time, we may lose the ability for our bodies to recognize what an empty tank truly feels like. We re-route our physiological cues into eating for some other reason. One suggestion is to try going without a meal or snack and then evaluate how you feel. If you can complete your tasks at hand during this period with no ill effects and (insert sarcasm here) the world didn’t end, then guess what? You probably didn’t need that meal or snack. Keep in mind, however, that it is important to only refuel just enough to where the tank is replenished, not overflowing. — Lynn Madsen, BAC Personal Trainer Find us at: facebook.com/ bronsonathleticclub.com Friends and Family Christmas Eve Thursday, Dec. 24 7 a.m.–1 p.m. Youth Center open 8:30 a.m.–noon Deli open 7 a.m.–noon Christmas Day Friday, Dec. 25 BAC CLOSED New Year’s Eve Thursday, Dec. 31 7 a.m.–3 p.m. Youth Center open 8:30 a.m.–noon Deli open 7 a.m.–1 p.m. New Year’s Day Friday, Jan. 1 7 a.m.–3 p.m. Youth Center and Deli CLOSED Meet the New BAC Personal Trainers We are pleased to welcome three new certified personal trainers to the club: Kenneth DettleffCertifications: American Council on Exercise–Certified Personal Trainer; RKC kettlebell; Brains and Balance specialist, Boot Camp Gold specialist, Kinesio Tape Applications specialist, Drums Alive instructor, Tai Chi, Silver Sneakers Cardio Fit, Qi Gong, Spinning®; CPR. The Hunger Games: Here’s the Real Challenge For many of us, the most challenging component of a healthy lifestyle is the “eating healthy” part of the equation.

— Lynn Madsen, BAC Personal Trainer •

Kailee DoorlagI was a collegiate athlete and had practice all the time, so staying in shape wasn’t a problem for me. Unfortunately once my collegiate career ended, I quit working out and put living a healthy lifestyle on the back burner. It was about a year ago when I realized how depressed I really was. I could barely look at myself in the mirror, let alone get to a gym and workout. I had no energy and no motivation to get up and do something about it.

I became a member at the BAC in August, and decided to start working out with my trainer, Jason Douglas. Jason helped me tremendously with my diet, and in just a little over three

months, I have lost almost 60 pounds, 11 inches off of my hips and waist,

and have more energy than I ever could imagine. Not only has Jason helped me achieve these goals, but he helped me get my strength back ... and helped me

remember how much I love lifting heavy weights! I recently completed the 21-day

Primal Challenge, and try to commit to the primal lifestyle as much as possible. I have learned very quickly that it is not only working out, but also what you put in your body that is just as important as the work you put in at the gym. At the BAC, I like to participate in the primal movement and Spinning® classes to keep myself busy so I do not get bored. I have worked at Bronson for just over seven years in patient transport within the hospital. It’s a job that requires a lot of walking, so I am certain to get my steps in on a daily basis! Thanks to the BAC, my family and friends, and my personal trainer I can officially say I have my life back. •

Tammy Williams, Business OfficeAnyone who knows Tammy Williams knows what a kind, helpful teammate she is at the BAC. And, her unassuming accommodation goes beyond her role as the club’s Business Office assistant to her live-saving generosity as a regular donor at the on-site blood drives for Michigan Blood.* “I like to help out and give back when I can,” she says. “I have donated over three gallons of blood.”

If you’re a member of Bronson Athletic Club, you get an email or envelope from Tammy every month. She handles the billing responsibilities, coordinates the statement mailings and is the point person for accounts payable and invoices.

An early morning riser, she is generally at her post by 7 a.m. She is happy to visit with members about their accounts at her office across the hall from the locker rooms. “I enjoy working with numbers and helping people,” Tammy says. “The positive environment at the BAC is a great workplace, and my fellow teammates are the best.”

Tammy joined the staff eight years ago this month, shortly after relocating to the area from Illinois with her husband and three sons. (Son Eric is a former BAC teammate.) She previously worked as a bookkeeper, which provided a good background for her current duties.

When not at the BAC she enjoys gardening, reading, crafts (including making homemade soap) and “fishing with my husband, especially when I catch the biggest,” Tammy jokes. We love being outside—this is a beautiful area to live in.”

* Join Tammy and make a difference as a blood donor. The next BAC drive will be Wednesday, Dec. 23, from 2–6 p.m. Give the gift of life!.
