CHANGES...CHANGES... and More CHANGES

For those that haven’t been to Oaklawn since May...YOU ARE CERTAINLY IN FOR A RUDE AWAKENING!!!The updates and construction in and around the Oaklawn grounds are massive.

The grandstand has new air conditioning, the casino expansion will offer an addi-tional 28,000 square feet of fun, the hotel, scheduled for a 2021 completion, has (as of today) exterior framing to six of the seven floors and by next week the 7th floor should be completed. In addition to the construction around Oaklawn’s main build-ing, the backside has six new barns, a new track kitchen, a new backside entrance, which is about 300 yards (a football field) past the old Cellabrate Road entrance, and a new building that houses the stable security, HBPA and medical clinic.

An enormous amount of excavating is being done to areas from the casino/hotel all the way to Golf Links Road to level the grounds and make more areas of blacktop to provide organized parking for Oaklawn patrons.

To find the ATBHA office, you will come in the new backside stable gate entrance and turn right in front of the new white block building that houses the stable security, HBPA and medical clinic. Our modular office trailer is located at the end of the white block building. It is set back even with that back of the building to allow front door parking for those visiting the ATBHA office. It reminds me of the Monopoly game... the white block building (security, HBPA and medical clinic) is the Monopoly hotel and the ATBHA office is the Monopoly house!

2020 ATBHA Awards BanquetWe will announce the location and date of the 2020 Awards Banquet in our next news-letter. We know it will be either Friday, April 3rd or Saturday, April 4th. Hopefully after this year we will be able to hold it in Oaklawn’s new Event Center. It seems there are stumbling blocks of some sort on most other locations in and around Hot Springs any more.

The Clarion closed in January of this year for a remodel and will reopen as a DoubleTree with a tentative re-open date of January 16, 2020. I was invited to take a “hard hat” tour of the facility. I guess it’s called that because there were hoses and ladders everywhere and wires for lighting hanging out of walls and ceilings in various locations and direc-tions. They have a ways to go, but from what I saw and what I was told, I think the end result will be an extremely nice facility with an exceptionally beautiful view from the upstairs banquet room and a lot of other amenities not previously provided.

The Hotel Hot Springs, previously the Hilton when we had our banquet their in years past, did their total make-over a couple of years ago. We were able to see and enjoy their many updates and improvements as our banquet was held there earlier this year because of the Clarion’s closure.

We hope to have the banquet location confirmed by next week, but we didn’t feel it necessary to hold up printing the newsletter to announce the location a week sooner; our members need the new Directory so they can know what stallions are available for the 2020 breeding season!

THE JOCKEY CLUB & A.T.B.H.A. Registration & Certification Changes The Jockey Club Requires Foal Certificate Managers to sign up for Interactive Registration Accounts. As the end of 2019 approaches, it is a good time to again remind owners, breeders, and agents who handle foal certificates that an Interactive Registration (IR) account is required for those who manage and transfer digital foal certificates. Starting with the 2018 foal crop, The Jockey Club Registry tran-sitioned from hard copies of foal certificates to digital copies.

Individuals can create their IR accounts at registry.jockeyclub.com.

Through the use of digital certificates, users experience a host of benefits: • Users can access digital certificates any time on computers and mobile devices. • Owners and agents do not have to worry about losing or damaging certificates. • Operations are streamlined, whether in the racing office, on the sales grounds, while transporting horses internationally, or when executing private transactions.

The Jockey Club IR expects additional enhancements will be introduced in the future as various local and national racing entities incor-porate their authentications to the certificate. (See note below regarding A.T.B.H.A.’s procedures pertaining to Arkansas’ authentication to the digital certificates.)

IR can also be used to perform nearly all registry-related activities. The Jockey Club also reminds owners that the deadline for regis-tering yearlings and 2-year-olds is December 31, 2019.

Anyone with questions about signing up for an IR account or digital foal certificates should contact The Jockey Club Registration Services at inquiries@jockeyclub.com or (859) 224-2700. The transition to digital foal certificates was first announced at the Round Table Conference on Matters Pertaining to Racing on August 14, 2016.

A.T.B.H.A.’S DIGITAL ARKANSAS-BRED CERTIFICATION

Upon completion of all registration requirements with The Jockey Club the digital certificate will be posted at the Interactive Registry web-site. Arkansas Thoroughbred Breeders’ & Horsemen’s Association (A.T.B.H.A.) will then affix a stamp with the words “Registered Arkansas-bred” followed by an outline of the State of Arkansas and three horses. If you place your cursor over the stamp, the ATBHA registration number will appear.

ATBHA is no longer providing the two part Arkansas-bred Foal Registration Certificate. In its place you will receive a cover sheet with the stakes nomination instructions and a Nomination Form. The Foal’s Arkansas Certificate of Registration is at the bottom of the stakes nomination instruction sheet.

MICROCHIPS and MICROCHIP SCANNERS

Thoroughbred owners and breeders can now order microchip scanners directly from Pet Travel through a link on The Jockey Club’s Interactive Registration page at:

The Datamars Compact Max Universal Scanner, which is man-ufactured by Datamars and marketed and distributed by Pet Travel, is available for $249. (Recently a slight discount has been given for orders to individuals with The Jockey Club affiliation.) In August 2015, The Jockey Club’s board of stewards voted to change certain provisions of the Principle Rules and Requirements of the American Stud Book and microchips will become a requirement for registration for foals of 2017 and later. This enables microchips to be phased in on a voluntary basis for foals of 2016 and enables breeders and owners to establish appropriate procedures with their veterinarian and identifier and to acquire a microchip reader. “Countries such as England, Ireland, France, South Africa, Australia, and others have instituted microchips as a requirement for registration for several years now,” said Rick Bailey, The Jockey Club registrar. “Identifiers at the various racetracks in North America have also reported the microchip to be reliable in confirming identity from the runners importing from Europe, Asia, and other parts of the world.” Microchips are available upon request on a live foal report for 2016 foals and will be distributed for all 2017 foals. There is no increase to the registration fee for either foal crop. When coupled with the review for written markings, the use of microchips improves the efficiency and reliability of the identification process for all Thoroughbreds, even for those who do not make it to the racetrack. The Jockey Club recommends that microchips be implanted by a veterinarian or under the supervision of a veterinarian.

OBITUARY CLYDE HENSON - formerly of Lavaca, AR, currently Gentry, AR, was a long time member of ATBHA, possibly one of the original members, passed away September 22, 2019 in Springdale. He was born October 31, 1930 in Lincoln, Nebraska. He was the loving husband of Anita for 68 years. Clyde was a perfect gentleman, who trained and bred thoroughbred horses. He traveled quite often going to many horse races over the years, and was known as the horse whisperer. In his later years he dealt in cattle and enjoyed that as well. His love for all ani-mals was apparent when you were around him. He was a sincere, gentle man who always put his family first. He loved his grandchildren dearly and enjoyed his time with them. Clyde is survived by his wife, a son, Dan Henson and his wife, Kathy of Gentry, daughters, Linda Hawkins of Bella Vista and Annette Orsbun of Van Buren; 8 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Clyde will be missed by the many lives he touched. ATBHA extends its sin-cere condolences to Anita and the entire Henson family.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT!Do you know the average human stomach capacity?

The volume of the human stomach depends heavily on the person’s diet and the amount of food they eat, but the average capacity is about one liter. The stomach can expand to up to or over four liters though. That is about the volume of a jug of milk! (Sounds gross to me!)

Now let’s find out the capacity of a horse’s stomach.

Suri tells me that a horse’s stomach has the capacity of about 4.7 gallons. (Now, that really sounds gross to me!)

That’s not saying to feed a horse that much. That would be “colic city” for sure!

1) Submit Live Foal/No Foal Reports for the 2019 foaling season. This will help ensure that you receive your Regis-tration/DNA kits in a timely manner. When submitting elec-tronically you will need the dam’s name, and her YOB, sex of the foal, foaling date, breeder’s name, address & phone number; and

2) Submit Reports of Mares Bred for stallions standing in 2019. This is the easiest ways to submit RMB’s and will result in quicker issuance of stallion certificates. Stallion certifi-cates can also be released electronically to save even more time. Please keep a copy of this and all reports you submit electronically for your information and records.

HORSEMEN: If you have any changes to your name, address, telephone number, etc. from that which is listed in the Member’s section of the ATBHA Stallion & Farm Directory, please notify the ATBHA office so we can maintain accurate records and so we can mail quarterly newsletters and annual incentive awards to your correct address. Your failure to do this will result in your incentive awards check being mailed to the last address we have on record and possibly floating around within the postal system for some time or even being lost.

This is lower than the past few years and concerns me regarding the number of Arkansas-bred foals for upcoming years. I’m sure foals by out of state sires have increased some, but their dams still have to be bred back to Arkansas sires after foaling. Even with the high expenses of raising and racing horses, the purses and breeder awards here in Arkansas have kept up with expenses. Although you’re spending more to get more wins, with Oaklawn’s growth and purse structure, our horse business in Arkansas seems solid.

I’ve been busy on the farm lately. I am trying to finish weaning foals, I planted rye grass and I sold the last of my calves. It was so hot and dry in September it set my pastures back, so I’ve had to start putting out hay in some of the horse pastures. I’m pretty full of horses, but as I write this, Keeneland’s mixed sale just started, so I’m going to try to get a few more!

Oaklawn will be open to horses soon and the live racing will be here before you know it. I can’t wait!

FROM THE ATBHA OFFICEOur office building has been unaccessible for 6 months, but it looks like they are hooking up the utilities this week and I may get to move back in next week. There is still work to be done - clean-ing on the inside, but work on the outside that can be done after we get moved back in. I’m hoping to at least get in, get settled, get everything hooked up and be operable and organized by the first week of December and ready for year-end registrations and nominations!.

PLEASE USE THE NEW FORMS FOR BROODMARE AND FOAL REGISTRATIONS. If you use old ones, it could delay processing your registrations. The forms to be used are available on our website, atbha.com. Also, remember to register new broodmares entering the Arkansas program BEFORE foals are born and attach a copy of her Jockey Club Certificate (front & back) to the Application for Registration of Broodmare. Failure to attach the required copies will delay processing your registrations.
