Accessible, quality education has been a priority of The University

of the West Indies for many years.

In this regard, the Cave Hill Campus is dedicated to serving the region and continues to implement new academic and social initiatives, aimed at widening further access to higher education for citizens. The Arthur Lewis Award for Indigenous Peoples is founded on institutional commitment to the democratisation of opportunity, and seeks to promote academic excellence within the indigenous community of the region.

The Award was conceptualised with the aim of achievingequityinaccesstohighereducation,so that no person is denied educational opportunities or benefits for reasons unrelated to ability. The aim is to correct the situations of disadvantage in higher education experienced by persons from ethnic minorities in the region. One such minority is the Caribbean’s indigenous population also referred to as the ‘First Peoples’, whose historical struggle against colonial dispossession and slavery has shaped the region’s cultural identity in profound ways.

The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus seeks to enfranchise the indigenous community by offering this prestigious Academic Award, the provision of which is consistent with our commitment to educational justice for all.

This Award is available to the Kalinagos of Dominica, the Mayans and Garifunas of Belize, and the Garifunas of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
