About Sir William Arthur LewisSir William Arthur Lewis, the patron of these Awards, won a Nobel Prize in 1979 for his pioneering research on economic development in emerging countries.
His 1954 published work entitled “The
Theory of Economic Growth,” is still regarded
today as the seminal study in the field of
economics. In 1963, he was knighted for
his pioneering research and contribution to
this area.
From 1960 to 1982, Professor Lewis served
at Princeton University as Professor of
Public and Internal Affairs, where he taught
undergraduate and graduate courses
in economic development and modern
economic history, and later as Professor of
Economics at James Madison University.
The late Sir Arthur also served as a Vice‐
Chancellor and Principal of The University
of the West Indies, Chancellor of the
University of Guyana, and Chairman of
the Caribbean Development Bank. After
he retired from Princeton in 1983, he was
appointed President of the American
Economics Association.

The UWI is the region’s premier educational institution. Its faculties offer a wide range of undergraduate, masters
and doctoral programmes in the Arts, Humanities and Education, Agriculture and Natural Sciences, Science and Technology, Law, Sport, Medical Sciences and Social Sciences. The UWI is recognised worldwide for its scholarship in numerous academic spheres and has undoubtedly been a critical force in the political, economic and cultural development of the Caribbean region. ABOUT THE AWARD The Award was launched in 2005 to honour the memory of the Caribbean’s most celebrated Economist and Nobel Laureate, the late Sir Arthur Lewis of St. Lucia.
The Sir Arthur Lewis Award offers funding to nationals of the OECS who have gained admission or expect to qualify for entry to The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus on a full-time basis.

The Arthur Lewis AwardFor Indigenous Peoples
Accessible, quality education has been a priority of The University
of the West Indies for many years.
In this regard, the Cave Hill Campus is dedicated to serving the region and continues to implement new academic and social initiatives, aimed at widening further access to higher education for citizens. The Arthur Lewis Award for Indigenous Peoples is founded on institutional commitment to the democratisation of opportunity, and seeks to promote academic excellence within the indigenous community of the region.
The Award was conceptualised with the aim of achievingequityinaccesstohighereducation,so that no person is denied educational opportunities or benefits for reasons unrelated to ability. The aim is to correct the situations of disadvantage in higher education experienced by persons from ethnic minorities in the region. One such minority is the Caribbean’s indigenous population also referred to as the ‘First Peoples’, whose historical struggle against colonial dispossession and slavery has shaped the region’s cultural identity in profound ways.
The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus seeks to enfranchise the indigenous community by offering this prestigious Academic Award, the provision of which is consistent with our commitment to educational justice for all.
This Award is available to the Kalinagos of Dominica, the Mayans and Garifunas of Belize, and the Garifunas of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
DURATION OF AWARDS* The Awards shall be for a period of up to three (3) years.
VALUE OF AWARDS ThevalueofeachAwardshallbeequaltothevalueof the economic cost and tuition fees applicable to the Cave Hill Campus for the duration of the Award. The Awards will not include amenities and guild fees, living or other expenses including books, or incidental expenses.
SELECTION PROCEDURE* The Campus Committee for Undergraduate Awards will make the selection based on the following criteria: • Demonstratedcapacitytocompletethecourseofstudy• Academicmerit• Financialneed
TENURE The continuation of the Awards shall be subject to the following:• Reportsofgoodconduct• Satisfactoryacademicprogress
An Award may be withdrawn at the discretion of the Principal on the recommendation of the Campus Undergraduate Awards Committee if the studentfailstomaintaintherequiredstandard.
* Criteria varies for The Arthur Lewis Award for Indigenous Peoples. Prospective candidates for this Award must be recommended by their respective indigenous peoples council who will provide them with full details.
Arthur Lewis Advocacy Programme
The Arthur Lewis Award has afforded hundreds of OECS nationals the opportunity to pursue higher degrees at The UWI, Cave Hill Campus.
The Sir Arthur Lewis Advocacy Programme was thus conceived to provide the beneficiaries of the Award, the expressed opportunity to become advocates of the scholarship programme by sharing their positive experiences at the Cave Hill Campus with prospective students from their respective countries.
