Oundle School War EffortMunitions for the war were made in the School workshops. 40 boys at a time were able to work on the production of fittings for torpedo gears and submarine mines. The new military hospital in Northampton benefitted from 60 screens being made by the Junior Forms.
“It was at first thought that 8 hours would not be too long for a boy to work in a day, but we found that better work was achieved if he only work for 5. On several occasions to satisfy demand some boys have given 10, and even, 12 hours in the day.”

Oundle School, 1914The new Science Block was built in 1914.“When completely fitted out, the new laboratories will contain instruments, which on one hand measure minute charges of electricity and on the other hand, huge testing machines capable of breaking iron bars under a tension of 5 tons.It must not be thought that the older boys alone have the advantages of the new laboratories offered to them. The experiment is being tried, with pleasing results, of allowing quite young boys to work on the same general lines... Here is developed that scientific inquisitiveness which parents occasionally find embarrassing, but which has nevertheless its own obvious value.”
“The clock in the Junior Physics Laboratory was fitted with an electrical arrangement, so that seconds can be beaten on an electric bell, the sound being audible in all parts of the room. This arrangement is of value in experiments of dynamics. Time signals sent out from the Eiffel Tower are received by the School wireless installation. The clock can therefore be regulated with great accuracy.”
Science Society - ConversazioneOn Speech Day, a conversazione would be held. Early in the Summer term, over 200 Senior boys would volunteer to design, research and exhibit experiments. Planning and work was done in their spare time until just days before lessons were postponed. Then, odd groups could be seen scurrying around Oundle with jam jars and fishing nets, hods of mortar or engine parts scattered over the lawns, all hurriedly getting ready to exhibit.

“The great majority of boys join naturally in games... a few however, if left to themselves would loaf away their time, doing no good to themselves or to any one else. For the benefit of such boys some games are made compulsory.”
