NYC Trip

On Wed. April 7th Mitzie D. (Adult Services) and myself attended a conference at

Hunter College in NYC entitled “Autism and Artistic Talent.” The speakers,

Ellen Winner and Jennifer Drake from Boston College’s Department of Psychology,

were there to discuss their paper, “’Autistic’ Local Processing Bias also Found in

Children Gifted in Realistic Drawing.” Winner is an author, researcher, and direc-

tor of the Arts and Mind Lab at Boston College and Chair of their Psychology Dept.

They studied a group of typically-developing children that were gifted in drawing realis-

tically to see if they had the same local processing bias seen in some individuals with

autism spectrum disorder. Through a series of tasks, including observational drawings

and three local processing activities, the research seems to indicate that both groups

do indeed seem to share the same local processing bias. Additionally, that the ability to

mentally break-down images into their parts is a trait possessed in many individuals that

are able to draw realistically.

After the lecture I was able to speak briefly with the speakers. The possibility of fur-

thering their research at the Anderson Center was discussed. I will let you know more

information on this as it comes in.

If you would like to read their research paper yourself please let me know. I have a pdf

that I can forward to you.
