Some Chapter news: It is the Central Ohio Chapter’s turn to host the Region 2 president’s meeting this year. The meeting will be held the first weekend in June which is June 5th and 6th. We appear to have rounded the corner and put the worst of the cold and snow behind us and warm weather will soon be here. I for one am looking forward to being able to put the boat back in the water.

National Engineers Week was the last week in February and Hanse Cromer and I were fortu-nate enough to make a presentation on plumb-ing engineering to the junior and senior pre-

engineering students at South Western Career Academy. All I can say is that there are some really great young people looking to the future and becoming engineers. I encourage each of you to reach out to your local school districts and offer to speak to the students about ca-reers in engineering. We have the ASPE Socie-ty PowerPoint presentation for anyone that is interested. If you would prefer to volunteer one of your chapter officers to be the speaker we

can arrange that as well.

For the month of April we will have Mr. Jeff Hawkins, National Product Manager for Watts Water Technologies, responsible for all Testa-ble Backflow products under the Watts, Ames, and FEBCO brands. Jeff will be covering the application and selection of backflow preven-tion devices as well as issues to avoid.

Our program year has been an exciting one and I hope that everyone is enjoying the variety of technical topics we are covering. I would love to hear from you our members on any specific topics you would like to see covered please drop me an e-mail to [email protected] or call me at 614 397-

6697.

Region 2 Affiliate Liaison —- Dann Holmes

Region 2 Affiliate Liaison Report

By the time you read this article, maybe, just maybe outdoor temperatures will begin to approach their seasonal average. I have my doubts. This year, it’s been one deep-freeze after another. I’m thinking Re-gion 2 will set an all-time lowest average tempera-ture for the month of February. Doesn’t that just make you want to look square into Punxsutawney Phil’s eyes? ¤¤

As we SPRING forward, we’ll feel the warmth of the sun, witness the snow melting, the ground thawing, see trees budding and flowers bloom, and hear the wonderful sounds of chirping birds. Ah springtime! :)

As our SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) spirits are lifted we’ll break out the golf clubs (the way I golf, I’m better off to just break them!). ASPE Chapters across Region 2 will be ramping up their trade show, golf outing and special event activities.

On February 28th & March 21st, the Pittsburgh Chap-ter will host their “Counseling the Boy Scouts of America Plumbing Merit Badge” at the Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.

On March 10th the Eastern MI Chapter will hold their annual NASPE Car Races at the PITC in Troy. March 11th is World Plumbing Day. On this day the Greater Toronto ASPE Chapter will hold their next meeting. This is a big deal as they are very close to becoming a full chapter!

Also on March 11th the Northern Ohio Chapter will be touring the Great Lakes Brewery. The Buffalo-

Niagara Chapter is hosting their annual Trade Show March 25 at The Grapevine Banquets in Depew, NY.

Western MI has two upcoming events, a tour of the

recently updated Bell’s Brewery in Galesburg on April 8th. On May 19th they will hold their annual golf at the Quail Ridge GC in Ada.

Southwest Ohio will celebrate their annual ASPE Night with the Dayton Dragons on May 29th. You can join the Central Ohio Chapter on June 16th for their annual golf outing.

In addition to their Boy Scout Plumbing Merit Badge events, the Pittsburgh Chapter will be hosting their annual golf outing at the River Forest GC in Free-port on June 19th. The Rochester Chapter is also planning a June golf outing but has not yet finalized their plans.

The Central Ohio Chapter will host their annual golf outing at the Golf Club of Dublin June 23rd. The Evansville Satellite Chapter will host their 3rd annual golf outing at the Cambridge GC on June 25th. Fol-lowing this, Central Indiana will hold their annual golf outing at the Ironwood GC NE of Indy on Au-gust 7th.

As you see, there is a lot of activity throughout Re-gion 2. So wash the salt off your cars, enjoy the longer days of sunshine and drive to your local ASPE chapter meeting. Engage. Contribute. Edu-cate and Learn.

Please take time out to participate in the festivities. Often these events are the main fundraisers for our chapters. For those attending the Brewery tours, find a designated driver you can count on.

If I could find the time and travel to each of the golf events listed here I’d get some real practice in this year. Maybe my clubs would like me more, and vice-versa!

last Board meeting the Board voted unanimous-ly to make two changes starting with this year’s election cycle. The Board voted to change the length of the Board members terms from the current one year to two year terms. This will put us on the same cycle that Society Board members are elected and also with a lot of the other Chapters in the Society. It also has the benefit of us not having to scramble to find members to run for the Board and to hold an election every year. The other change the Board voted for was to add the Board position of Vice President of Education. This has been a Board position for a number of years now, but not a required position for our Chapter due to our Chapter Category which is based on the num-ber of members in our Chapter. The Board felt it was time to add this position so that we could better serve the Central Ohio members with quality education opportunities and also to oversee the Chapter Scholarship fund. With that being said, we are looking for a member to volunteer to run for the position. Please contact any Board member if you would like to run. The Vice President of Education responsibilities will be essentially creating education programs in the form of seminars for the Chapter member-ship and overseeing the Chapter’s Scholarship and Scholarship fund.

The Certified in Plumbing Design (CPD) exam registration is now closed. The CPD exam is being held April 9th and 10th at testing sites across the country. A new feature this year is that the test is open book and you are allowed to take up to six reference materials into the testing center. For more information on what type of reference materials will be approved, go to the ASPE website https://aspe.org/CPDOpenBookFAQs.

Registration is now open for the 2015 ASPE Technical Symposium is now open. The Sympo-sium is being held in St. Louis this year at the Hyatt Regency at the Arch. The room rate is $129.00 a night. A couple of new features this year in addition to the technical sessions will be the AYP Professionals Leadership Conference

(Continued from page 1) and networking event and a product show. For more information and to register for the Symposium, go to aspe.org/2015-ts-home-

page.

If you would like to know what the Society’s Board of Directors are up to, the first quarter 2015 ASPE Board Report is now available for your perusal. To review the report, go to the following website: https://aspe.org/BODnewsletter. Member login is required.

ASPE has two new standards open for public review. A joint effort by the American Rainwater Catchment Systems Association (ARCSA) and ASPE, ARCSA/ASPE 78: Stormwater Harvest-ing System Design for Direct End-Use Applica-tion and the Water Quality Association (WQA) and ASPE, WQA/ASPE 1201: Electrochemical Drinking Water Treatment Systems. Both standards will open for public review and comment on February 27, 2015 and comments will be accepted until April 13, 2015. The standards may be found here: https://aspe.org/content/aspe-standards-public-review.
