Learning GoalsTexas (From the Alamo to Space) Description

Many of you have asked me if the history we discuss in class and read in books is the "truth" of history. You might argue that you are actually expected to take exams and provide the "right answer"...

This trip will make you aware of the fact that there are many valid points of view about a historical event. You will be able to understand that who only analyzes a small part of an event, from only one point of view, may understand it only partially. You will visit historical sites, listen, watch and analyze a historical event from two opposed standpoints.

You will read primary and secondary sources; you will visit the actual locations where this Mexican-American Ware took place. You will listen to experts, and use technology to research.

Finally, you will become a critical and effective communicator, and write an essay about this historical event.

In the second unit of the Mexican History syllabus we will learn about the Independence of Texas, under the rule of Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. An interesting and controversial topic, especially if you are critically analyze both versions of this chapter in history, and contrast the viewpoint of modern Mexican Historians as well as North American versions. It will be interesting to listen to the American version on site, and analyze the version that states that the Mexican government invited American families to settle in the Texas region. Vast land grants were offered to settlers if they promised loyalty to the Mexican government. However, in 1835, settlers took control of The Alamo in San Antonio. A very bloody battle took place The United States supported the Texan independence and sent military forces to Texas. In 1836 Samuel Houston became president of the newly founded “Republic of Texas”.Texas became a sovereign nation from 1836 to 1846. The boundaries with Mexico were a constant motive for dispute, until Texas finally annexed to the US. This period of time in Mexico is characterized by its political unrest, with constant internal quarrels between Centralists and Federalists. World powers observed the new nation as a group of disorganized babies who fought for power, waiting for a moment to conquer. There was a French invasion, and eventually, Benito Juarez was the President of the Mexican Republic (here in Guadalajara) while Maximilian Von Habsburg was also ruling as the Emperor, supported (at first) by the conservative Centralists.

How to sign up

1. Although the final due date for the first payment is Sep 29, the period between the 23rd and the 29th is “first come, first serve”.

2. If they are the 41st payment or later, they will be put on a waiting list in the order which they paid.3. No payments at banks will be accepted for WWW trips. 4. All down payments are non-refundable. Transfers are possible if airline tickets haven’t been

purchased yet and the job of finding a student to “buy” the transferred ticket rests in the student/family, not WWW Coordinator, nor ASFG.

5. If sign-ups surpass the limit, we will consider the remote possibility of expanding the trip or creating another independent trip with the same itinerary. However, there is absolutely no guarantee that we will be able to do either of these.

6. Parents who might have difficulty making the full down payment by Sep 23rd should meet with Dave or Julie.

7. After the trip is full or the deadline has passed, the official waiting list is maintained by Jocelin Diaz. Please contact her directly if a student is interested in placing their name on the waiting list.
