This ability to identify and materialise new opportunities translates into ambition, but also and in a pragmatic manner, it reveals the ability to strengthen the mitigation of the risk that resides in depending of any market or business, seeking to create synergies that enable new projects in which Mota‑Engil can be competitive and simultaneously create value for its shareholders.

It was with this objective that Mota‑Engil bid and won the process of privatisation of EGF, a company that will give us an added ability to act in the waste sector, enabling a stronger investment at the international level in this sector.

It is also with this objective in mind that Mota‑Engil Europe is evaluating the possi‑bility of entering the United Kingdom, that it is diversifying its activity in Poland, after having been awarded its first rail contract. Furthermore, and despite the stagnation in public investment, Mota‑Engil will conti‑nue to work in Portugal each day, striving to conquer new projects such as those we have presented in this edition and which will be part of the Mota‑Engil portfolio, as to continue to be a benchmark, not only as a market leader, but by developing new technical and innovative competences.

In this edition of SINERGIA, we seek to bring our readers the most significant achievements of the Mota‑Engil Group in the last few months.

Among the various topics, I emphasize a recurrent factor in this edition: the demonstration of the effort and the perma‑nent ability to do more and better, regar‑dless of the difficulties which evidently persist at the macroeconomic level.

Only thus can we continue to compete among the best in the world, in a restricted group of companies of which we are part, being in Top 100 worldwide, affirming the ability of execution and excellence in the the quality with which we develop each project.

However, and regardless of the size of the organisations, today we experien‑ce changes in context that require the companies to constantly adapt their positioning, and with such indicators as the slowing of the growth rhythm in the Chinese economy, the continued drop in the price of commodities, especially oil, and the constant reduction in public investment in European countries such as Portugal. Despite all these circumstances, Mota‑Engil continues, nevertheless, to display, with our characteristic resilience, the ability to expand its horizon of activity.

The growth of activity in the area of infrastructures and waste, both in Mexico and Brazil, and a new concession in Aruba, are added to the portfolio of concessions held in the region, and strengthen our motivation to continue to invest in here in order to consolidate our position as a regional key player in the infrastructures area.

In Africa, we secured an especially important contract for Luanda and for its citizens, renovating the main streets of the capital of Angola, confirming Mota‑Engil Angola as a company at the service of the country and capable of responding in a timely manner to the challenges presen‑ted to us. But we are also mindful of the new opportunities on this continent, and in this edition we present, among others, the first project we have been awarded in Rwanda, a new market in Africa where we will be present.

About Latin America, and by reading the interview that the CEO for the Latin American region gave to this edition, SINERGIA readers will learn in detail about the ongoing growth strategy that is being implemented, and which new geographical areas will soon be part of the footprint of the Mota‑Engil Group.

We continue to diversify in Latin America and to ensure large‑scale projects such as the Guadalajara Metro, a project that is the cover story for this edition due to its signi‑ficance and level of demand, but which we shall be able to carry out in line with the qualities the Group has demonstrated throughout a 70‑year work history.

The growth of activity in the area of infras‑tructures and waste, both in Mexico and Brazil, and a new concession in Aruba, are added to the portfolio of concessions held in the region, and strengthen our motiva‑tion to continue to invest in here in order to consolidate our position as a regional key player in the infrastructures area.

As João Parreira noted in his interview, our uncommon resilience allowed us to overcome the challenges that we have felt over the last few years. I am convinced that we shall continue in the future to meet our commitment to these markets.

I should also mention that winning new horizons was not achieved merely with new projects and the opening of compa‑nies in new markets. The Manuel António da Mota Foundation and those responsible for it have also managed to generate the activities we describe in this edition and which contribute to strengthening the values that are rooted in the culture of Mota‑Engil and the spirit of solidarity with which we operate at the global level.

For the first time in the almost 70 years of Mota‑Engil's history, this is the year in which Latin America represents the region with the largest order book of the Group. So we invited João Parreira, the CEO of Mota‑Engil Latin America, for an interview with SINERGIA to better understand the activity of the Group in this strongly developing region.

NO. 1 EMPLOYEE IN MEXICOWe begin the journey with his arrival at the Group in 2007, a decision he says was based on the “the attraction that Mota‑Engil arises in any professional with international ambition, and the desire to

know and be present in various latitudes of the world, being able to reach the top of the organisation”, declaring that “this is what motivated me and this is what I am thankful for today: the trust of all of the shareholders to enable me to get this far.”

On this occasion, however, he remembers that “when I was invited to go to Mexico, we had won the concession bid for Livra‑mento‑Xalapa. I arrived on a Monday at six o´clock in the morning at the airport in Mexico City, a city with 24 million inhabitants, without really knowing what I would find. When I reached the hotel I thought about turning back, but… I didn't.

And eight years later here I am, still in Mexico City.

The determination that Mota‑Engil has as a company gives us confidence that the sacrifices we make regarding our family life are counterbalanced by a perennial strategy, and as professionals, this is what makes take on the bet.”

A VISION OF THE STRATEGIC EVOLUTION IN RECENT YEARS Today, we asked him, as a member of the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors of the holding company, to share his vision of a Group that has greatly

changed due to its activity in different markets and businesses, given that João Parreira has the perspective of someone who is part of the strategic bodies and at the same time is close to the operations.

On this subject, he reminds us that “in 2008, when the Strategic Ambition Plan 2013 was started, we were present in 14 – 15 countries but 80% of our clients were handled directly from Portugal. Now, the opposite is true.

The decentralisation and the strategic vision of internalisation, implemented gradually, allowed us, through a resilience

that was absolutely out of the ordinary, to position ourselves in the ranking of the 30 largest European companies. All this in the midst of a crisis of the Portuguese financial sector.

If I could list everything bad that could happen between 2009 and 2012, I would lack sufficient imagination to fill in all of the requirements of what actually occur‑red. However, the resilience, conviction and determination of our leaders, our shareholders and our employees to enable us to grow, led us to manage to overco‑me all of the challenges and to being considered today a leading company in Sub‑Saharan Africa, a mid‑size regional player in Latin America and clearly the Portuguese leader in the infrastructures industry, and, I would say, one of the main Portuguese companies with an interna‑tional position. It was possible to achieve this in the worst scenario.”

João Parreira noted that, “I was not part of the team responsible for defining this strategy in 2008, but I can take pride in being the driving force, in Mexico, for this strategy. Thus my identification, my empathy and my total symbiosis with the strategy defined at that time by Jorge Coelho, and which Gonçalo Moura Martins continued. This is the strategy that I continue to support on the Execu‑tive Committee, and with which I identify with.”

Today, considering the size and diversity of the Mota‑Engil Group, he recognises that “the regions must strengthen their processes and procedures, because that is the only way we can continue to operate as a whole.” Citing as an example José Mourinho, with whom he has been closely connected for about a decade, João Parreira reveals that one of the greatest lessons he learnt was “the unprecedented management that the coach made of his team’s players, individualising objectives whilst creating a whole that was much

stronger. If we manage to define indivi‑dual objectives, of each of the regions, but at the same time maintain a shared global vision, we shall all save energy and work more efficiently; and the result of all this is far greater.”

THE CHALLENGES IN LATIN AMERICAAs for the work currently underway in Latin America and its main challenges, he summarizes them in a short sentence: “To consolidate the regional dimension of Mota‑Engil as an infrastructure company in Latin America, thus becoming able to gain more space in other countries.”

João Parreira emphasises that “in the last three years we changed our business profi‑le, since the market of Peru had a relevan‑ce of over 80% in turnover. The strategy is to consolidate as a regional player, with Mexico having some preponderance, but where the three countries – Mexico, Brazil and Peru – are equivalent.”

THE IMPORTANCE OF DELIVERING THE GOALS FOR 2015For João Parreira “if 2014 was an impor‑tant year for consolidating the acquisition of projects that allowed us to achieve a record order book for Latin America, which is also the largest among the regions of the Mota‑Engil Group; 2015 is the year of showing the ability to deliver, which is being demonstrated very clearly

by a growth of 25% in the first six months of the year compared with the same period last year. This allows us to demons‑trate that all of the expectations in Latin America are being confirmed.

Our success as a group results from our entrepreneurial ability, the ability to create new markets. But it is not enough

to create them, we must stabilise them as markets of local and regional dimension and relevance. Just like Portugal; even after so many years of a declining market, this market is essential for the Mota‑Engil Group, because this is our cradle, this is where the origins of our knowledge reside.”

PARTNERSHIPS AND THE CONCESSION REGIME IN LATIN AMERICAGiven the fact that the concession regime is a model widely used in Latin America, we asked João Parreira to comment on the market and on the application of this model. In his answer he confirmed that “the entirety of the economic and compe‑titiveness development in the countries of Latin America is related to the capacity of its airport, port, and road infrastructures, since these are economies based on two phenomena: their industrialisation and the exportation of their natural resources, whether we are referring to crude, gas or precious metals. Infrastructures are essential.

The rationale that Europe had in the 1960s and 1970s to set up the philosophy of public‑private partnerships (PPPs) – which is an absolutely strategic economic solution – becomes efficient because it consists of sharing costs throughout the useful life of the infrastructure, just like in the industrial sector.

PPPs are a growth instrument of the infrastructures, and we are a company that operates in the infrastructure indus‑try. That is the reason why we cannot allow ourselves to be disconnected from the know‑how we developed in Portugal over the last 20 years. That knowledge is what made us one of the most successful companies in the recent history of Latin America. Let us remember that we were awarded, have constructed, and today operate nine projects in this region, all of which under the regime of concession”.

PROJECT FINANCING Questioned about the financial strategy of Mota‑Engil in Latin America, the CEO of the region states that “the projects have the ability to generate cash‑flow, and all of the local concession projects have local financing. All of them. This also arises from the maturity of the financial markets in this area of the world.

In Latin America, Mota‑Engil has already established relationships with specific multilateral entities such as CAF, the Inter‑American Development Bank (IBD) and the o Central American Bank. Our track record is very important for these entities, our 70‑year history of delivering. And in emerging countries, this is the most important criterion in a relationship of trust.

There is one thing I always say: 70 years of history with full name; we know who the directors are, and have a shareholder who is iconic in the sense that he is our first ambassador, our president. This is what gives us tranquillity and serenity when we engage in new markets.”

OPPORTUNITIES IN MEXICOProviding an analysis of the potential of each market in which Mota‑Engil is present, João Parreira begins his evalua‑tion with Mexico, stating that “with the strengthening of the commitment, with the growth in the level of investment, in 2016 Mexico will probably be the largest market in the Group, which presents a challenge, for Mexico and for the Group. This is a country that clearly has opportu‑nities in new business sectors.

In Mexico we have a stable path of growth. We started in the area of concessions, where we had a learning period and we established the strategic partnerships we felt were useful at a certain time; we were able to adjust this strategy at certain times and today, Mota‑Engil is considered one of the three main building companies in the Mexican market.

At Mota‑Engil we have the example of Capomo, our tourism project with a total of 7 km of beach and where we will promote urban design and the construction of hotel units that will operate in an area totalling 300 hectares. This project will position us in a distinctive segment in a country which is the largest tourist destination in Latin America and the 10th largest

worldwide. This will contribute to a great tourism development in Guadalajara and the country itself. This will be a project of great quality, to be developed in phases, which includes all‑inclusive hotels, a golf course designed by Greg Norman and Lorena Ochoa, residential condominiu‑ms, and a Nature area – something very popular nowadays – with an Eco‑hotel. And even one mountain area, which will be very exclusive.

I can tell you first hand that we have signed the contract with Fairmont, a very prestigious Canadian hotel chain, and we are very honoured that they have selec‑ted us for their second hotel in Mexico. This was the first hotel to formalise the investment in the project. But we have various other well‑known international chains interested in this project a little over two hours from Guadalajara, the 2nd city of Mexico, which has over ten million inhabitants, and whose nearest beach was four hours away.

This project is associated with FONATUR, which is a Mexican tourism fund. It is a large‑scale investment project, under‑taken by Mota‑Engil for a period of 15 years and with estimated sales of over 2 billion dollars.” This investment ensures the continuity and growth of the Mota‑Engil Group in Mexico for the next two decades.”

ENTRY INTO THE ENERGY SECTORRecognising that the energy sector determining for the future of Mexico’s development, João Parreira reveals, “We are studying various possibilities and may, by the end of the year, acquire the first projects in the energy sector in Mexico; in production, distribution and also in specific competencies in enginee‑ring, procurement and construction in the area of energy.

In Peru we developed this a few years ago with two water projects. One of them we have already finished developing, having entered into a joint venture with an opera‑tor to distribute and generate electrical energy."

To enter into the energy sector, João Parreira says “the Mota‑Engil Group has a tradition of knowing how to share its experience but also has the ability to receive the knowledge from those who know, live and have been in the market longer. This possibility and the availa‑bility of the Mota‑Engil Group and its employees to give and to receive, allows for partnership‑building strategies to arise that are the differentiating factor of our growth in Latin America compared with our peers.”

THE GUADALAJARA METROBy developing one of the largest projects of the Group in Guadalajara, the CEO of Mota‑Engil Latin America notes that “we are a company who has delivered for 70 years. The symbolism of Guadalajara will allow us to extol this same message and set ourselves apart from the rest. We promoted mobility on this project and have placed Carlos Roldán, a professio‑nal with vast experience, in charge of a project which for us is both symbolic and strategic, to earn us the trust of the authorities. Roldán himself started his

journey in our group with the Perote‑‑Xalapa construction project in Mexico, was recently in Peru, and has now retur‑ned for this great challenge in Mexico. The relationship with the community, with the client and with our own employees on the project is essential for us to succeed."

THE STRATEGIC VISION IN PERUMoving on to Peru, where the Group started in 1998 in Latin America, João Parreira revealed that they intend for Peru to be “the cluster in the mining area. This is where we started, this is where we have the best competencies. From Peru, we want to develop a relationship with the large mining clients in the world, and to know and handle the topics of safety and quality, which are strategic today, given that we want to be part of the great works, the great projects.

Peru is the cluster where we have all the resources, competencies, and experience to act in a market which is as important as the great private clients.

Peru is the market where we have the largest number of employees and our second largest equipment park. Thus, Peru must also become the development

cluster of the best operating practices of our equipment, not forgetting our central laboratory, which is essential for the quali‑ty of the projects we are developing.”

THE BRAZILIAN EXPERIENCE UP TO NOWIn Brazil, and after a very in‑depth study of the local infrastructure market, the option to enter relied on the acquisition of a share in a company which, as João Parreira says, “has the same DNA as us. And this has been the leverage for our ability to grow in Brazil, a country that already represents the second market in the region with regards to its order book.

We found a very important partner for us, who makes us feel at home, and this identification of values is the reason for the success of our presence in Brazil.

We have a team that is very consistent in all of its operating structure, among Brazilians and the Portuguese, and this transforms us into a company with a single voice. It's very pleasant. We are home, that's the best definition.

“Our commitment to delivering, in this modern world, is what will set us apart from the rest, and allow us, in a compe‑titive market such as Brazil, to maintain growth levels above 20% of the order book of the last years.”

Despite the recognised downturn in the Brazilian economy, João Parreira predicts “continued recurring growth in Brazil, so that, within 3 – 4 years, we will achieve annual billings of over 500 million euros per year.”

COLOMBIA AND THE NEW MARKETSOn Colombia, João Parreira says it will “become the platform for new markets, bearing in mind the experience of operation, development, construction and maintenan‑ce of the projects in PPPs. We want to be in Central America, in the Caribbean.

From this platform we shall develop a concession on the island of Aruba, in a new project we were awarded. This is a 100‑million dollar project to expand and construct the waterfront running from the airport to the new hotel area. This is a road project with 10 km of rehabilitation and a new 7 km extension, for a construction period of 22 months and a concession for 22.5 years.

In the Dominican Republic, I hope this year we will be able to win the first project in a market in need of water and energy infrastructures.

In Paraguay, we are already qualified for some projects, and along with the Hospitals of Coimbra University (from Portugal), we shall try to define partner‑ships for the hospital industry of Ecuador. We are also evaluating energy projects in Bolivia and have opened an office in Chile.

The objective is to constitute five platfor‑ms of relatively the same size, i.e., a size greater than 200 million dollars of annual billing for each of the following: Peru, Mexico, Colombia, Brazil and Chile. Then, in cycles, with each opportunity, with each project, each of this operations can grow. I think that Mexico will stabilise at 500 million and Brazil will also achieve those numbers, since this integrated vision is part of the strategy for 2020 in the region of Latin America.”

INVESTING IN THE ENVIRONMENTIn the environment area, João Parreira considers that “we have managed to achieve organic growth, both in Brazil with CONSITA, and in Mexico with GISA, and we are waiting for the upgrade represented by the incorporation of the EGF, since the size and technology of the EGF will clearly set us apart in growth in the environmental area of Mota‑Engil in Latin America. Without the EGF it would be very difficult to grow in markets of this size because we would not have the technical requirements in terms of previous experience. However, currently, the largest waste collection contract in the entire Group is in Mexico, with 500,000 inhabitants.”

In the Public Offer for Subscription, 148,355 new shares were issued, corresponding to 74,177,500 euros, with a demand of 208,498 shares, an amount 1.41 times greater than the offer.

In the Public Exchange Offer provided in this operation, Mota‑Engil exchanged 41,645 bonds corresponding to an amount of 20,822,500.00 euros, which earned the demand of over 1,100 investors exchanging shares that matured in March 2016 for bonds from the new emission, thus extending the investment period to 2020, and also receiving a an award of 14.64 euros in cash for each bond exchanged.

The operation had the participation of over 7,500 individual investors, of which around 6,400 are new investors, in a clear synonym of the strengthening of confidence in Mota‑Engil Group.

in a global placement of 95 million euros

In line with the continuous process of refinancing foreseen in its financial strategy, Mota‑Engil performed the issuing of bonds among retail investors, which enabled, besides the subscription of new bonds, an exchange for investors who held Mota‑Engil 2013‑2016 bonds, who could in this case extend the maturity of their investment at a fixed annual rate of 3.90%. At the end of the subscription period that ran between 17 and 30 June, on the 1st of July, at the head office of Euronext Lisbon, the results for the Mota‑Engil Fixed‑Rate Bonds, July 2015 – February 2020 operation were presented.

In an operation that had Caixa BI as global coordinator, Caixa Geral de Depósitos and BPI banks in the placement syndicate and Vieira de Almeida as legal adviser, the operation's success was highlighted by all speakers at the session, including the president of Euronext Lisbon, Luís Laginha.

Representing Mota‑Engil were the CEO, Gonçalo Moura Martins, and José Pedro Freitas who, as CFO, was the speaker at

the ceremony, stating that “this result shows the confidence of the investors in Mota‑Engil, in its strategy and in its management team and, as it was in 2013, this is a significant gesture of recognition by the market and an additional factor that motivates us to do more and better.” At the end, he concluded thanking again all those involved in the operation.

Completing the issuance of the new bonds in the amount of 95  million euros, the operation thus fully complied with the objectives established, allowing Mota‑Engil Group to refinance their activity and international expansion, as well as extending the maturity of the debt and optimising its financing costs.

With this objective, Mota‑Engil took part in a recent initiative promoted by the Portuguese Chamber of Commerce in the United Kingdom, the Construction Seminar in London for the Portuguese construction sector, with the presence of Martinho Oliveira and Luís Moreira da Silva, the latter responsible for Mota‑Engil in Ireland.

On this occasion, Martinho Oliveira confirmed that there is a high expecta‑tion of Mota‑Engil Europe entering the United Kingdom market, even quanti‑fying the objective of invoicing for the combined market of Ireland and United Kingdom, where “we want to grow to about 100 million euros per year in the next four to five years”.

This perception is the result of an evalu‑ation of a global market whose industry

is worth approximately £90,000 million annually, a broadened access to a larger number of potential clients, partners but also financiers such as banking and investment funds.

With this perspective of evolution, in June Mota‑Engil Europe took the initia‑tive of opening an office at St. Albans, in North London. The designated team was assigned to evaluate in an integrat‑ed manner the United Kingdom and Ireland markets, under the coordination of Luís Moreira da Silva and designating a financier, Francisco Paisana, under the leadership of Martinho Oliveira.

With this in‑depth study in the United Kingdom, Mota‑Engil seeks to broaden its activity in the European continent, operating in a market with high poten‑tial for companies with a large portfolio of competences in the area of Construc‑tion and Infrastructure Management, as is the case of Mota‑Engil.

In order to strengthen the presen‑ce of Mota‑Engil in the United Kingdom, the company was present at the London Build 2015 through its Irish subsidiaries, MEIC and Glan Agua. They thus had the opportunity to present to United Kingdom's market its broad range of competences and operating areas.

The exhibition took place in the impressive O2Arena with an audience of potential clients and suppliers with great interest.

The work to be developed is intended to improve the surface characteristics of the paved runway and taxiway but also to ensure a significant improvment in its structural capacity, to allow an increase in its period of service life.

In light of these conditions, the work will have very strict planning of all activities to ensure that in the short access period to the runway, all work will be developed as projected.

Portugal is no exception, and the tourism industry has witnessed a high preponder‑ance of growth in air traffic to the country in the last few years.

WORKS ON THE A3, PORTO – VALENÇA MOTORWAY Brisa – Concessão Rodoviária, the conces‑sionaire company for key road infra‑structures in Portugal, has awarded to Mota‑Engil the contract to improve the road surface on Santo Tirso – Famalicão subsection, South – North direction, of A3, Porto – Valença Motorway.

The objective of the contract, projecting works lasting eight weeks, is to improve the road surface on the section of motor‑way between kilometres 20.9 and 25.7, in the South – North direction of Santo Tirso subsection, extending for approxi‑mately 4.8 km.

The contract includes various technical works for the improvement and upgrading of the infrastructure conditions, including micro milling of the wear layer and its replacement with a new, 5 cm thick, final layer in a bituminous permeable mixture. Among other works, the levelling layer underlying the wear layer will also be improved, and the definitive horizontal signalling will be re‑painted.

surface within the country, from North to South

subsection junction A2 – A6 – A13 – Alcácer do Sal of the A2, South Motorway.

This contract includes the current section, seven viaducts and seven underpasses, in both directions, between km 56+293 and 81+300, operating since 1997 and has an approximate extension of 25.2 km (cross profile of 2 x 2 lanes), and the branches A, B, A+B, C, D, E, F, G, I, A2 – A6, A6 – A2, A13 – A6 of the junction of A2 – A6 – A13.

The works included in this contract are aimed to improve the functional character‑istics of the road surface on the roadway and branches of the junction of A2 – A6 – A13, by milling and repositioning the milled thickness with bituminous mixtures.

In certain sections with severe deforma‑tions and cracking, sanitation is done on the right hard shoulder, with later compacting of granular material and filling up to the current elevation with bituminous mixtures.

It also includes repairing the transition edges in apparent expansion joints to be maintained, sawing pavement in hidden expansion joints to be maintained, perform‑ing cross grooving in the wear layer, repaint‑ing of horizontal signalling, increasing the height of telecommunications manholes, placement of markers, repositioning of

directional stalls for guiding divergence points, flexible/folding position markers, shock absorbers and increasing the height of flexible guard rails.

Further to the South, Mota‑Engil is prepar‑ing to perform technical works, with a projected deadline of 60 days, consist‑ing on the replacement of the expansion joints on the bridge over Sado River and the access viaduct in the South – North direction, in Alcácer do Sal – Grândola Norte subsection.

The work is expected to include milling the existing pavement and its reposition‑ing in the areas of the adjacent deck to the expansion joint. In addition, it is also anticipated that the drainage system of the joints in the lower area of the deck, will be re‑established/adapted, including tests for drainage and water tightness.

A4 – PORTO – AMARANTE MOTORWAYStill in the north of Portugal, Mota‑Engil has ongoing work for BRISA consisting in the rehabilitation of road surfaces, namely the Ermesinde Junction, which is part of the Águas Santas/Ermesinde Subsection, of the A4 – Porto/Amarante Motorway.

On this motorway, Mota‑Engil will execute the bituminous road surfacing, a project‑ed total of 6,450 tonnes and the milling of 23,650  m2, contributing to upgrading the pavement of the Junction branches and the full‑lane toll plaza, in addition to work to be developed in paving the road for slow traffic belonging to the Paredes/Penafiel Subsection.

The planned work, which includes milling, application of bituminous mixtures and interventions in horizontal and vertical

Mota‑Engil signed a contract with a consortium led by Ferrovial for the construction of road surfaces (granular and bituminous bases) on the East section of the Marão Tunnel.

The work is being carried out on a 10 km extension linking Marão Tunnel with Trás‑os‑Montes motorway subconcession, and is expected to be completed in the coming month of November 2015.

It should be emphasized that the materials to be applied on the road surface layers (either the tout‑venant, or the bituminous aggregates) come from the Brivel quarry, located about 10 km from the construction site where, Mota‑Engil has a plant for the manufacture of hot bituminous mixtures, which is able to produce 260 tonnes per hour, and will provide the 125,000 tonnes needed to construct the road surface for the work.

On 13 June, Mercado do Bom Sucesso celebrated its second anniversary

In order to celebrate the date, DJ Maria Gambina was invited and there was a concert of Mikkel Solnado. Colour, music and visitors filled the Mercado on this special day. Two years after the completion of the renovation works and ensuring a new urban concept to this old traditional market, it can be said that the new Bom Sucesso is considered a winning project in Porto. Mota‑Engil attended the Multi‑Span Large Bridges conference, organised by the School of Engineering of Porto Uni‑versity, in partnership with Instituto Superior Técnico (Technical Superior Institute) of Lisbon University, Minho University and Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia Civil (Portuguese National Laboratory of Civil Engineering).

The event was held at Centro de Con‑gressos da Alfândega do Porto (the city’s Conference Centre, formerly the

Customs House) and was attended by over 300 engineers from 42 countries.

The international bridge engineering community in attendance had the op‑portunity to exchange knowledge and experiences on topics such as innovative construction methods, special founda‑tions and geotechnical research, new materials and special devices, safety and maintenance, structural analysis and re‑habilitation.

António Hipólito, of Mota‑Engil's tech‑nical department, reminds that “on these occasions Mota‑Engil has the op‑portunity to present a bit more of its work, since there was room for two presentations – one about Ceira Bridge, presented by Sara Gil,  and the other about Pinhal Interior, by Nuno Amaro. Some of Mota‑Engil’s projects were also referenced in other presentations, demonstrating the importance of the work developed.”

Mota‑Engil Engenharia showed once again its availability to share its experi‑ence and knowledge within the technical and scientific community on topics relat‑ed to its activity. This demonstrated that Mota‑Engil Group has, as part of its tech‑nical structure, personnel with the high‑est technical knowledge at the interna‑tional level in civil engineering industry.

GUINCHO WASTE WATER TREATMENT

PLANT VENTILATION SYSTEM

Five air treatment units were installed

Mota‑Engil Engenharia Eletromecânica, area of the company dedicated to electromechanics engineering, has completed the renovation of the ventilation system of Guincho Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP), an underground infrastructure projected to reduce chemical and biological environmental contaminants. Carried out in seven months, the project for SANEST involved a total of 23 companies, and 130 workers. Five air treatment units were installed, specifically suitable for extremely aggressive environments using coalescing filters, designed to

extract the high humidity and high salt concentrations present on the air from outside environment. The cooling of the nine electrical rooms was completed with direct expansion precision systems. The current insufflation potencial of new air in the WWTP is 216,000 m3/hr. and the electric rooms cooling capacity is 165 kW.

For a better architectural integration of the mechanical equipment into the surrounding landscape, construction and finishing works were also carried out after a careful selection of materials, equipment, and anti‑corrosive treatments. Taking into account the proximity of the plant to the coastline and the corrosive contaminants originating from the WWTP.

The project was under constant monitoring of Health, Safety and Environment technicians, who were involved to prevent accidents that could derive from possible hazardous mixtures. Extraordinary measures were also adopted, namely by using individual protection equipment, enforcing strict procedures, and permanent monitoring of air quality. Also due to the difficult access to work in several sites it were used special configuration scaffolding to carry out specific projects.

We should highlight the contribution by the Technical Office of Structures and Architecture in providing support by adopting new solutions and adapting them to situations which weren’t initially part of the project.

In a ceremony presided by minister Włodzimierz Karpiński, the provincial governor Wojciech Wilk and representatives of local authorities, the regional road 747 was inaugurated in Poland.

With an extension of for 46 km, this infrastructure links Lublin to Lubelskie and Mazowieckie provinces. Mota‑Engil Central Europe was the company

Mota‑Engil Central Europe has signed a contract for the renovation of the railway line number 351 between Poznan and Szczecin, in the province of Wielkopolska. This is the first contract in Poland for works on railway lines, which was awarded by PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A., a project that includes the renovation of approximately 17 km of railway line to be used for the transport of cargo and passengers.

Mota‑Engil Central Europe will be responsible for the project execution and construction, with an investment value of over 8 million euros. The renovation work includes, besides the railway surface, the railway traffic control devices, electrical and overhead lines, railway crossings and drainage system for the railway line.

responsible for the Chodel bypass, an investment of 15 million euros, as part of a global intervention in the project, with a total investment of 78 million euros.

The Chodel Bypass extends for 5 km, and Mota‑Engil constructed a bridge, a viaduct, and a pedestrian bridge, as well as access roads to each of these constructions.

The investment's objective is to restore the full capacity of the railway line, increasing the current speed from 80 km/hour to 140 km/hour decreasing travel time, improving safety and reducing the costs of maintenance the infrastructure.

Mota‑Engil thus takes another bold step to demonstrate its implementation capacity and quality level in a new sector of the Central European market.

SECOND EDITION OF SAFETY WEEK WAS A SUCCESS

Safety Week, a programme implemented in the construction sites of Poland's ten largest construction companies that signed the Agreement for Safety in Construction, ended on the 24th May 2015.

During this period, over 50 events took place in the construction sites of Mota‑Engil Central Europe, including training and emergency simulation situations. Thanks to this investment, the promotion of a culture of safety in workplaces has reached hundreds of the company's employees. From the group of companies more than 30,000 people participated.

Second Edition of Start@ME Programme in Poland

Mota‑Engil Central Europe began the second annual edition of its largest Internship Programme, known as Start@ME.

In an effort to select 30 candidates who will work at the company for 10 months in different areas of activity, and under the supervision of a highly experienced mentor, the aim of this programme is to provide a valuable professional experience for each of the selected candidates.

SUMA has just launched SUMAKids, an online interactive platform providing educational content and environmental awareness, to be housed both on the SUMA website and on the institutional sites of its local governmental clients.

Designed to be used whether by youngsters or teachers, educational supervisors, those living in the municipality as well as anyone interested in the topics presented, this platform will provide access to the contents developed by SUMA. This includes animations, the viewing of videos, stories and materials to download and develop activities, such as games of sequences and correspondence, as well as colouring arts and crafts sheets, among others.

The one year contract of Manvia ensures the provision of technical assistance services and programmed preventive maintenance, systematic and corrective maintenance for Freeport Outlet Alcochete facilities.

The work includes inspections and interventions needed to perform the preventive maintenance of facilities and equipment, in order to maintain proper operation, conservation and total availability.

Santa Cruz Municipal Council in Madeira has awarded Manvia the contract to provide the management and maintenance servoces of wastewater treatment plants and of the pumping stations of Santa Cruz Municipality, which covers the facilities which are part of the public wastewater drainage and the drinking water supply networks, as well as the networks of the elementary school park buildings.

Manvia is responsible for the operation and maintenance of 18 facilities of the wastewater drainage networks, 4 of which are WWTPs and nine are facilities which are part of the drinking water supply network.

The area of cement and steel works performed a classification service of 180,997 tonnes of grinding media from a raw mill and from a cement mill at the production centre of CIMPOR/Intercement, a leading national company in cement production.

As explained by João Rolim, Director of Manufacturing of Souselas production centre, the partnership that exists between CIMPOR/Intercement and Manvia for this type of operation is already a common practice, and results from the good performance by the maintenance company.

The availability and fast response in removing and placing cargo without interrupting production, the very quality of the service that Manvia provides with the classification according to the standards of the client, as well as compliance with all of the safety rules, are differentiating elements that have placed Manvia in a position of leadership in this industry.

This service, aimed at optimising the mills in any factory, has been carried out

throughout Europe, and at this time the possibility of going into other markets is being studied.

“This work consists of physically separating by size every element that is grinding cargo, in order to optimise this cargo, removing the inert mass. On the other hand, the client can with some easiness identify all missing sizes, and replace this same quantity, also allowing optimisation of stock”, explained José Esteves, who is responsible for cement and steel works area.

Having started in 2001, this has been a growing business, and, today, Manvia has a fourth team getting ready for a market outside Europe. “The advantage of our activity aims this win‑win method, which combines reducing energy costs and increasing the production of the mills, and this is what we successfully offer our clients”, says José Esteves, adding that Manvia has been ‘building new bridges’ and “we believe we are on the right track, and the proof is that up to now we have had enquiries from several factories in the United States and Canada”.

EUROPEIn April 2013, Manvia began the Experimental Regime for the Exploitation of the Works (EREW) of the irrigation blocks II and III of Ervidel hydro‑agricultural development, in Beja, which lasted 24 months.

Over the past two years, Manvia prepared and put in place both systematic and conditioned preventive maintenance plans, which included the revision, replacement, lubrication, cleaning and inspection of the equipment, in order to reduce and prevent breakdowns and to increase its service life.

The infrastructure that are the target of the systemic preventive maintenance work of the EREW were Ervidel irrigation blocks II and III, the reservoir of command R2, and Penedrão pumping station.

According to André Barros, contract director of the Environment division at Manvia, this was a start‑up of an infrastructure constructed by Mota‑Engil Group, and whose maintenance was ensured by Manvia. “A contract like this

is important as it broadens our horizons and the coverage of the Environment division services”, adding that due its involvement, “there must be functional communication to the detail, because the smallest failure, originates a brutal loss.”

In terms of operations, maintenance and control of the provision of services, most noteworthy are the inclusion of duly accredited professional technicians, with specific professional experience, and the availability of resources that ensure total autonomy of the operating and maintenance teams.

ANTÓNIO MOTA VISITS ROAD PROJECT IN ZAMBIA

Visit to the Great East Road project was an added motivational factor for the team

António Mota, Chairman of the board of directors of Mota‑Engil Group, and Gilberto Rodrigues, Mota‑Engil Africa CEO, visited Mota‑Engil offices in Lusaka. The head of the Zambia branch, Fernando Cardão, gave a presentation on the activity and the project underway.

The next day, António Mota and Gilber‑to Rodrigues met with the president of the Republic of Zambia, His Excellency the Honourable Edgar Changwa Lungu. The presence of the Board of Direc‑tors chairman was an opportunity to reaffirm the commitment of the Group in investing and supporting the develop‑ment of Zambia. After this meeting, the team proceeded with visit to the Great East Road project. This is the flagship

project of Mota‑Engil Africa in Zambia. The team visited all project's facilities including the quarry, the industrial unit for manufacturing asphalt, the base camp, prefabrication equipment and the mechanical facilities.

With a distinguished committee of members of Mota family such as Manuela Mota, Teresa Mota, Teresa Mota Neves and Sílvia Mota, in addition to members of the Board of Mota‑Engil Angola namely the chairman, Paulo Pinheiro, and António Graça, accom‑panied by other representatives of the company, the visit felt like a return to the origins, that is to say, where the accredited entrepreneurial activity of Mota‑Engil Angola began, in 1946.

The main objective of the visit was to present a house to one of the oldest employees of Mota‑Engil universe, currently retired, Mr. Adão Bachi, who

was hired by the company in 1957. The delivery of the property was an act of gratitude for his zeal and loyalty, since Mr. Adão Bachi has remained, since the beginning of his collaboration, in his old home, which has served as head office, dwelling and company's guest‑house, by then named Mota & Compan‑hia, located in Landana, municipality of Cacongo, province of Cabinda.

Mr. Adão Bachi started as a house employee, providing general support to logistical tasks. He later moved on to caring for the children of the employees who cohabited the guest‑house. Over time, he assumed various

positions, from logger to shopkeeper, in charge of selling merchandise. After the departure from Cabinda of Mr.  Manuel Mota, his boss, Mr.  Adão Bachi became responsible for and in charge of the villas.

In recognition of the fact that this esteemed employee did not abandon the company during the troubled years of war in Angola, and also protected Mota & Companhia assets, Mr. António Mota decided that he should be given a new home.

The intervening parties in the construc‑tion of the house were the employees of the current Mota‑Engil Angola, Carlos Lima, Carlos Pires, João Magalhães, Júlio Silva (responsible for the work), Nuno Pimenta, Manuel Alves (foreman) and Mário Castro.

On their visit to the Cabinda province, Mota family and the remaining members of the committee had the opportunity to learn more about the culture and customs of the province inhabitants, having visited the city and later traveling to the local company’s facilities. The trip also included a visit to Maria Manuela farm, located in the

village of Mongo Macongo, municipality of Necute. The purpose of this stop was to pay homage to Maria Manuela Mota, the eldest daughter of Manuel Mota. In fact, all the members of the committee were welcomed by the local commu‑nity and the administrator. Here, the entire committee had the opportu‑nity to learn the process of the artisanal manufacture of palm oil. This farm, now inactive, will be rehabilitated to manufacture this same product, for later marketing. It was also possible to know the Tchiela farm, in the municipality of Cacongo, which will be reactivated for the manufacture and later marketing of livestock and vegetables.

With this visit, they were able to know the roots, that is to say the history, of this great company of which we are a part, the Mota‑Engil.

MOTA‑ENGIL AFRICA HAS OPENED A DOOR TO THE REPUBLIC OF RWANDA

Kigali Airport it’s the first project

Mota‑Engil Africa has opened a door to The Republic of Rwanda, a new country offering new horizons for the company. Rwanda is a landlocked East African country whose green, mountainous landscape has earned the nickname “Land of a Thousand Hills.” Its renowned Volcanoes National Park is home to mountain gorillas and golden monkeys. Rwanda is bordered by Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

It's a country that is in a trajectory of growth. Between 2001 and 2014 the country registered an annual average growth of 9%, driven by coffee and tea exports and the growing tourism. This provides numerous opportunities for Mota‑Engil. The work as began with the flagship project “Kigali Infrastructure Taxiway and Apron Improvements”. The project is being managed by Denis Martindale while João Neto is the Country Director.

The Kigali Airport Project includes the civil engineering construction of the new taxiway, a new hangar and electri‑cal installation of AGL and Floodlights. The contract is worth 23 million dollars with a 10 month contract duration. The date of completion is estimated in the spring of 2016.

Mota‑Engil Africa Rwanda Branch has 100% of the contract that will involve 187,438 m3 of excavations, 24,243 m3 of Stone, 15,167 m3 of bituminous works and 231 aircraft ground lights. This project is the first of its kind in this new market, and is just the beginning for Mota‑Engil’s presence in Rwanda. Gilberto Rodrigues was guest speaker at the Financial Times African Infrastruc‑ture Financing and Development 2015 Summit that took place in London.

The purpose of the event, sponsored by the Financial Times, was to present the investment potential African continent represents, more specifically, to raise awareness on the needs for investment in infrastructures, especially on the energy sector. This would allow the economic development of the region and improve the quality of life for its citizens, while attracting the interest of companies, multilaterals, pension funds and private equity companies.

In his speech, Gilberto Rodrigues spoke of the challenges and opportu‑nities for construction companies in Africa, sharing the consolidated experi‑ence of Mota‑Engil, working in Africa for 69 years.

In addition, Mota‑Engil Africa had a booth at the event, to make the brand known and noticed by the financial insti‑tutions present.

As administrator and the main responsible for operations in Africa, Gilberto Rodrigues will thus be at the forefront of creating programmes at CCA designed specifically to attract potential investment partners in Africa.

The Corporate Council on Africa (CCA) was formed in 1993 for the purposes of contributing to the strengthening of com‑mercial relations between the United States of America (USA) and the African continent. Mota‑Engil Africa has been part of this body since 2013.

The CCA works closely with govern‑ments and multilateral entities to im‑prove the investment and business climate in Africa, and to renew the perception of African markets within the U.S. business community.

For this organisation, the future suc‑cess of Africa depends on the ability of managers and entrepreneurs to cre‑ate wealth through the private sector. American companies and even its citi‑zens can contribute more efficiently if partnerships are created, and areas in the private sector are identified in which the US and its companies can bring added value by setting up companies, investing capital, and transferring tech‑nology and management.

Following up on their activities, at the beginning of 2015, the management

of CCA proposed the nomination of Gilberto Rodrigues, CEO of Mota‑Engil Africa, to the Board of Directors of CCA.

On this occasion it was possible to know other members such as Paul Hinks (chairman of CCA and also the CEO of Symbion Power), Antony Cook (Microsoft), Aliko Dangote (Dangote Group), Jay Johnson (representing the Chevron Group), Jay Ireland (General Electric), and David Picard (Caterpil‑lar), among others.

Every year, the EXIM Bank promotes a conference that gathers over 1,200 exporters, responsible for purchases at international level, politicians and government representatives to anal‑yse global trends in commerce and how American companies can take advantage to increase exports and create jobs.

In the event held in Washington, the CEO of Mota‑Engil Africa, Gilberto Rodrigues, participated in two work sessions as speaker, accompanied by Rattan D’Souza, a consultant who col‑laborated with Mota‑Engil Africa in promoting commercial relationships with American companies.

The EXIM Bank is an independent fed‑eral agency that supports the U.S. ex‑ports sector, providing financial mech‑anisms such as guarantees, loans and export credit insurance, in order to contribute to strengthening the sales of American goods and services pro‑vided by American companies abroad. In 2014, it approved operations worth 20.5 billion dollars, which helped with 27.5 billion exported, and the

creation of 164,000 jobs in the com‑munities it supported.

Having as central theme of the ses‑sions the airports of the future and the changes anticipated in the sector, Gilberto Rodrigues shared with those present his vision of the future for the airport sector and its economic agents, using as an example the new Kigali in‑ternational airport, in Ruanda, which Mota‑Engil Africa is building for the lo‑cal government.

The second session in which Gilberto Rodrigues participated was attended by American exporters responsible for purchases and developing business in Africa. The objective was to share in‑formation about the action model to the African continent and to identify oppor‑tunities for American exporters, namely in identifying the countries and sectors with the greatest potential.

In this session, the CEO of Mota‑Engil Africa presented the strategic vision of his company for expansion in Africa, strengthening new opportunities with potential partners present at the event.

every country where the company is present

Mota‑Engil Africa management team promoted a meeting different from cus‑tomary, by inviting to Johannesburg all of the executives with management responsibilities in each African mar‑ket for an annual strategic planning workshop. This was an opportunity to gather, for the first time and around the same table, those responsible for the different markets.

CEO Gilberto Rodrigues started the event by speaking of the history, vi‑sion and strategy for the future of Mota‑Engil Africa. He also shared the perspectives and the economic con‑text the company currently faces.

Throughout the day, those responsible presented their ideas, ensuring a shar‑ing of positions for the work to be de‑veloped this year. This was followed by the expansion criteria for the new markets and identifying opportuni‑ties by sector of activity and for each

country. After that, was discussed the strategic planning process, along with the future envisioned for Mota‑Engil Africa.

During the session there was also an op‑portunity to organise small work groups, which allowed colleagues from different countries to share ideas and experiences, and to propose alternative solutions for the challenges expected this year. The benefits of this exercise were evident during the work session.

Once the conclusions of the work ses‑sion and the ideas to achieve the vision for the future of Mota‑Engil Africa had been presented, Gilberto Rodrigues closed the work, encouraging those pres‑ent to be part of the solution needed for growth and continuing innovation. He stressed that everyone should work to‑gether for the single objective of making Mota‑Engil Africa greater, more diversi‑fied and united.

The municipality of Luanda has decided to promote projects to repair the infra‑structures of the municipality, such as roads, walkways, kerbstones and road signs. Present at the signing of the con‑tract awarded to Mota‑Engil Angola were the Governor of the province of Luanda, Graciano Domingos, and the chairman of the Board of Directors of Mota‑Engil Angola, Paulo Pinheiro.

Also present for this act were distin‑guished representatives of the Gov‑ernment of Angola, who, with their presence, wanted to demonstrate the importance of this contract for the con‑tinuing improvement and requalifica‑tion underway in Luanda, making this

city a benchmark at the international level. Representing Mota‑Engil Angola were António Graça, Calheiros Cruz and Tavares Rodrigues.

Integrated in the framework of the com‑memorations of the 40th anniversary of National Independence, this project has a budget of 78.9 million dollars (about 860 billion kwanzas) and an execution period of six months, with completion projected for 9 November of this year.

The first stone of the works of enlarge‑ment of the Northern Bypass road between Kampala and Namboole was laid in a ceremony attended by the President of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni, who thus honoured the event with his prestigious presence.

Representing Mota‑Engil at the ceremo‑ny were Gilberto Rodrigues, Carlos Pascoal and Francisco Franca.

The inaugural celebration was also attended by the Ambassador Head of Delegation European Union to Uganda, Kristan Schmidt, the former Minister of Public Works, Abraham Byadala, and representatives of the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA).

The project, financed by the European Union, the European Investment Bank and the Government of Uganda, is estimated at 67.4 million euros and is expected to be completed in July 2017. The work will have an extension of 21 km between Busega and Kampala‑Jinja, and includes drainage and earthmoving

works, two 3.5 km carriageways, and their respective kerbs, safety equip‑ment, walkways, road separators, fences and lighting, as well as the construction of pedestrian bridges and bus stops. The new motorway is adjacent to an existing 17.5 km road.

There is a strong need to develop a sustainable transport network in Uganda and this new enlargement work is fundamental to increase vehicular traffic and to make the roads more efficient. This will make the country more appealing to investment, and thus contribute to a higher level of develop‑ment and competitiveness.

The project, financed by the European Union, the European Investment Bank and the Government of Uganda, is estimated at 67.4 million euros and is expected to be completed in July 2017.

Mota‑Engil Africa Moçambique will provide mining work, including drill‑ing, excavation, loading and transport of sterile material resulting from the expan‑sion of the Moatize coal mine managed by Vale company.

The material handling will total 50 million tonnes throughout the 18  months of the contract, with a total value of 111 million dollars.

With the equipment mobilised and duly prepared for the operation, Mota‑Engil Africa Moçambique will have an equip‑ment fleet dedicated to the project consisting on a total of four 250‑tonne

bulldozers and twenty‑four 100‑tonne dumpers to the project's execution, with the support of six 50‑tonne bulldozers, two 25‑tonne motor graders, and three 75‑tonne drilling cars.

The project will have a total of 300 full‑time workers at the peak of production, consisting of 50 expatriate employees and 250 Mozambique national employees.

Mota‑Engil Africa thus continues a partnership relationship with VALE, strengthened with the success of the work performed by the builder in sections 3 and 5 of Nacala Corridor, between Mozambique and Malawi.

The contract, developed for the Mozambi‑can company Portos e Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique, E.P.  – CFM, involves the construction of a new railway bridge over Umbeluzi River and the respective access tracks. This will allow the existing bridge, to be placed out of service once is showing signs of advanced material deterioration.

The new railway bridge over Umbelúzi River has a total length of 363  m and it consists on a composite deck of 2.70‑metres‑high metal beams and a prefabricated reinforced concrete slab with free expansion at the right abutment

Having as client the Ministry of Justice, Mota‑Engil is developing the construc‑tion of the headquarters of Instituto do Patrocínio e Assistência Jurídica (Insti‑tute for Legal Assistance and Representa‑tion – ILAR), in Mozambique.

The project includes an office building designed for services to be provided at the central level by the ILAR, as well as this institute’s branch for the city of Maputo, with the capacity to house approximately 170 workers. The construction area will be 4,949 m2, within an area of land of 912.80 m2. The building has eight floors, one of which is the basement with an approximate area of 870 m2. The other

and a blocker in the left abutment. The five pillars and one of the abutments are founded in heading masses set in 26 piles. The roadwork to be developed consists of laying 1,550 metres of ballast tracks, of which 678 are to the north of the bridge (Maputo side), 340 metres on the deck of the new bridge, and 532  to the south of the bridge.

The existing Goba line between km 37+138 and 38+600 will be deactivated immedi‑ately after the connection to the new alternative, and will then be torn down and removed.

The rehabilitations to be developed for this important Mozambican company will be achieved by treating all patholo‑gies in the road surface with the respec‑tive repairs, and later providing a layer of modified bitumen.

Mota‑Engil Africa Mozambique is currently working on the expansion and modernisation of a group of hospitals for the Ministry of Health of the Repub‑lic of Mozambique (MHRM).

The Platinum Building, which incorporates a merger of residences, offices and shops in the timeless Avenida Julius Nyerere, in the upscale area of Maputo, has finished the construction of the residential building structure of the with 25 floors and the office building with 21 floors.

The construction phase of the structure in reinforced concrete is concluded, and the work is now in the phase of finishing works and execution of technical instal‑lations. The roof slab, corresponding to a leisure area with a panoramic pool and a remarkable view overlooking the city and Maputo bay, is completed. Also completed is the model apartment of the building. Characterised by its minimal‑ist features, where the signature of the architect Frederico Valssassina is evident in the concern with the harmony in the combination of materials.

It has a covered area of about 925 m2 and a total construction area of 2,603 m2.The dermatology ward block is projected to 56 beds, with the following specialty services: chemotherapy, phototherapy, therapeutic baths, and heliotherapy treatments. These services are available on the two floors and roof that make up the building. Communication between the different rooms of the floor is done through a corridor located after the reception area for patient triage in the building. The treatment rooms are at the entrance to the floor, and the inpatient rooms and bathrooms are in an internal area, ensuring some privacy for hospitalised patients and service personnel.

4. RADIOTHERAPY BUILDING OF MAPUTO CENTRAL HOSPITALClient: NEOPHARMA, LDAStatus: Structure completed

Brief description: The work consists in building the structure of the radio‑therapy unit of the Maputo Central Hospital.This project is divided into two parts: the bunker to install the radiotherapy treat‑ment equipments and the support area.The structure in reinforced concrete was executed in exposed concrete with stereotomy executed using wooden boards.

Invited by the Embassy of Portugal, Paulo Pereira, CFO of the Mozambique market, gave a presentation about “internation‑alising in partnership” at the economic seminar More and Better Credit for Micro‑companies and SMEs in Mozambique.

The event, held in Maputo at Centro Cultural Português (Portuguese cultural centre), was addressed to Portuguese entrepreneurs wishing to open businesses in Mozambique. Topics related to financ‑ing instruments were discussed, such as the Portuguese business cooperation

fund, Fundo Empresarial da Cooperação Portuguesa – FECOP, and the funding instruments of the financial development society, Sociedade Financeira de Desen‑volvimento – SOFID, and the Internation‑alising in Partnership programme.

The presentation given by Mota‑Engil was based on the Internationalising in Partner‑ship programme, a partnership between Mota‑Engil, Caixa Capital, and Portugal Ventures, which looks to providing operating and financial support for inter‑nationalisation projects of Portuguese industrial‑based companies.

MOTA‑ENGIL INAUGURATES WORKS IN CAPE VERDE

Construction projects of Banca Furada dam and management of the Ribeira da Prata river basin, both in S. Nicolau island, were completed

Mota‑Engil inaugurated Banca Furada dam in a ceremony presided by the Prime Minister, José Maria Neves.

Situated in Fajã, near Ribeira Brava, the new infrastructure with a 300 thousand m³ of water capacity, will irrigate a total area of 35 hectares, benefiting about 175 local farmers.

The work, in the amount of 6.35 million euros, was financed under a 200 million euro line of credit, which has already allowed the construction of five identi‑cal infrastructures, four on the island of Santiago and one on the island of Santo Antão.

Recently, Mota‑Engil also inaugurated the work of Ribeira da Prata river basin planning, the largest in Cape Verde. This work lasted two years and had a total investment of 700 million Cape Verde escudos (6.3 million euros).

The work included the construction of an underground dam, with a pumping

device fed by solar energy, 30 torren‑tial control dykes, 16 deposits, six collection dykes and about 7  km of water distribution pipes in HDPE. This management should benefit approxi‑mately 350 farmers directly and create 400 indirect jobs.

“We are making large investments in agribusiness because we want it to be a competitive sector, able to generate more revenue and more jobs so that we can accelerate the rhythm of growth and development”, pointed Prime Minister José Maria Neves at the inauguration.

MALAWI SHIPPING COMPANY WAS

THE LOGISTICAL BASE FOR

SCIENTIFIC EXPEDITION

The ship MV‑Katundu hosted a vast scientific

community and received cutting‑edge

equipment to carry out an important geological and geophysical study on the movement of the earth’s

crust, earthquakes and volcanoes

The Malawi Shipping Company (MSC) made part of a team to carry out a study on the earth’s crust at the bottom of Lake Niassa, located in the Great Rift Valley, between Malawi and Tanzania. In this expedition, the Malawi Shipping Company collaborated significantly providing the largest ship in the fleet, the MV‑Katundu, with 61.5  metres in length, 12.5  metres in width and 720 tonnes of cargo capacity.

The MV‑Katundu served as the logisti‑cal base for the expedition, since all equipment used for the research opera‑tion was installed on the ship, namely the container for monitoring, control, recording and collecting seismic data, a 20‑tonne telescopic crane, the hydraulic winch for the research equipment, high pressure air compressors, the office and the dormitories.

The objective of SEGMeNT (Study of Extension and MaGmatism in Malawi aNd Tanzania), the study and scien‑tific research project name, is to study the complex of tectonic faults created around 35 million years ago with the separation of the African and Arab tectonic plates.

This scientific research is a partnership of the Government of Malawi with the Government of Tanzania, Columbia University, Syracuse University and other education institutions and will also provide new information about earthquakes and volcanoes in the region.

The work was developed between the North of Malawi and the South of Tanza‑nia, and gathered a vast team of geosci‑entists, technicians, scientific equip‑ment operators and naval crew, who were also supported by a vast team from the Malawi Shipping Company which, from land, provided all operational support in setting up and supporting the operation.

Taking into account the transforma‑tion held in the ship’s environment and the added number of people of the research team, additional equipment had to be installed on board to provide extra rescue, safety, and firefighting means. This was done also to comply with all the requirements of the maritime and work safety authorities, who performed the proper inspections on the ship.

This work was being conducted between the

Mota‑Engil will leave its mark with the construction

of an important office and residential building

in Johannesburg

Mota‑Engil signed a contract with Lushaka Investments to construct a residential and office building in Sandton, the business and financial centre of Johan‑nesburg, in South Africa.

The iconic Central Square Building is a 483.7 million rand (about 34.7 million euros) project, and the work is expected to last 24 months.

Mota‑Engil Construction South Africa will fully assume the construction, which will involve 18,250 m³ of concrete, 530  pillars, 2,000 m² of aluminium and glass for the windows and 1,495 tonnes of steel, in a total new construction area of 65,000 m².

This will be the project that allows the emergence of Mota‑Engil brand in the construction market in South Africa and provides an opportunity to show the experience of almost 70 years in the sector at the international level.

Mota‑Engil Construction South Africa started out by working through a South

African construction company it conquer, but is now gradually starting to acquire its own work, integrating the group of 11  countries in which Mota‑Engil is working in the production of important projects on the African continent.

Mota‑Engil took part in the Small Builders Development Course business development project in South Africa, sponsoring the course designed for 24 owners and workers of small and medium companies. The course was specifically aimed at sustainability and the growth of the SME, and allowed the trainees to acquire important informa‑tion on how to effectively administer a construction company.

During the training, participants prepared a business plan, and had

their questions regarding how to find and obtain work, and how to carry out an efficient construction project answered. They also received other important tools on how to be success‑ful in the industry. This initiative has proven to be important to Mota‑Engil, since it is a way to transmit the experience of almost 70  years in the construction sector, contributing to the quality of the work of the subcon‑tractors who will be participating. The course will be divided in 14 sessions, during of six months.

Mota‑Engil was awarded the contract to build a five star hotel on the island of Príncipe, an investment by the South African HBD Group worthing over 12  million dollars. The luxury hotel complex will be built on Sundy beach, considered as the tourist area of the autonomous region of Príncipe, 150 km from São Tomé. The project is to be completed in 2016. São Tomé e Príncipe Minister of the Economy, Agostinho Fernandes, attended the contract signa‑ture between HBD, represented by Nuno Rodrigues, and Mota‑Engil, represented by David Santos.

The Minister recalled that the construction of this hotel is within the context of the framework agreement of investment, signed four years ago between the HBD Group, owned by the South African Mark Shuttleworth, and the regional government of Príncipe led by José Cassandra. Besides the investment in hotel and tourism infra‑structures on the island, Mota‑Engil has also developed works of rehabili‑tation and modernisation of the sole airport of Principe.

of a housing urbanization in the coastal area of Salé

Morocco's branch of Vibeiras is finishing the project of reconstructing the outside areas accessing the new sales centre of Bab Al Bahr project, in a 1.5 million‑euro contract.

Bab Al Bahr means “door to the beach” and is located in the city of Salé, next to the banks of Bouregreg River, on the Northwest coast of the country. This is a deluxe real estate project, which is being built. The challenge presented to Vibei‑ras was to complete the project in only 30 days (after the resolution of all special issues), which required the mobilisation of the entire company.

Both the owner of the project, who is originally from Dubai, and the team of designers and consultants were keen on

The extension of the light urban rail system (line 3) in the metropolitan area of Guadalajara, capital of the Mexican State of Jalisco, is one of the most am‑bitious and valuable projects being developed by Mota‑Engil in Mexico. It includes what is currently, among many other challenges, the most im‑portant underground engineering project ever developed by Mota‑Engil in the world. SINERGIA went to Mexico to get to know the city, the project and its protagonists.

GUADALAJARA: THE SECOND LARGEST URBAN AREA IN MEXICOThe Metropolitan Area of Guadalajara is the second largest urban area in a country of over 120 million inhabit‑ants. It is the 10th largest urban area in all Latin America, in which every day 4.5 million inhabitants commute. This is a region with a GDP ranking among the top 10 in Latin America, driven

by an economy sustained by industry, services and cultural, religious and gastronomical tourism. The municipal‑ity of Tequila, birthplace of the national Mexican drink, is a neighbour of Gua‑dalajara in the State of Jalisco, and is also famous for such culinary delights as pozole, tamales and especially tortas ahogadas, which can’t be found in any other part of the world. In October, the city is the stage for the second most im‑portant religious event in all Mexico: La Romeria (“The Pilgrimage”), in honour of the Virgin of Zapopan, with a two million people procession. Other must‑visit points in the historic centre of Guadalajara are the Cathedral, the Pa‑lacio de Gobierno (government palace), the Monumento à la Independência (monument to independence), and the churches of San José and San Fran‑cisco. What does this have to do with our work? Everything, as we shall see in the following pages.

A PUBLIC SERVICE PROJECTThe Guadalajara Light Train project that has been eagerly awaited by the popu‑lace for a long time, and its main client is the Secretaría de Comunicaciones y Transportes del Gobierno Federal – State Secretariat of Communications and Transport of the Federal Government. Its objective is to unite the areas of Za‑popan, Guadalajara and Tlaquepaque.

The mission of the consortium, led by Mota‑Engil, is the construction of 12 metro stations (seven elevated and five underground) distributed along 14 km of tracks, subdivided within two parts – one part in viaduct and another in tunnel –, and uniting those stations.

Within two years, upon completion of construction of line 3, around 250,000 persons will be transported on this route every day. They will then be able to connect to lines 1 and 2 of the

light rail network, as well as the metro‑bus and the bus station.

The section of elevated rail viaduct for which Mota‑Engil is responsible will ex‑tend for almost 9 km, with a deck width of 10.7 m. The platform is of static type, with a maximum distance between sup‑ports of 45 m. Each of the seven elevated stations will be 95 m in length, and an‑other 75 m if we consider the accesses.

As for the underground section, it will travel a total of 5.36 km, starting at the La Normal station and ending at the Plaza de la Bandera station, two of the busiest areas of the city. With the help of an earth pressure balanced tunnel boring machine (EPB) with a mixed front requested and custom‑designed to perforate rock – like a tunnel boring machine (TBM) – or soil with the same efficiency and without hav‑ing to use more than one machine.

The tunnel will have a section with 11.55 m in diameter, linking five under‑ground stations with a length of 110 m each (plus accesses), at an average depth of 30 m of surface.

The final area of the route, located in Tlaquepaque, will be the vehicle collec‑tion centre and maintenance workshop.

As for the value of the contract, the via‑duct section is worth about 150 million euros, and the tunnel 226 million euros. The construction period is three years, and the work should be completed by the middle of 2017.

A STIMULATING TECHNICAL CHALLENGE. A TREMENDOUS HISTORIC RESPONSIBILITY. A work of this size and complexity, developed in an urban context, is in itself a great challenge. The work is being carried out along 14 km and crosses a large part of the subsoil of the historic centre of the city, passing a scant 20 metres from the foundations of the 300 years old Cathedral. It also makes goes right under the Templo de San Francisco de Assis (temple of St. Francis of Assisi), dating from 1580. This represents a tremendous historic

In the specific context of risk manage‑ment, the global synergies provided by the Group have proven to be especially significant, namely through the contri‑bution of the team led by Ismael Gaspar (engineering unit) and the methods de‑veloped and perfected over the years to support this management at different levels. From his visit and monitoring of the project have resulted, for in‑stance, recommendations for drillings and more specific tests to better un‑derstand the areas of fault lines, and tools and methods were implemented for an even more rigorous planning and control than the ones already ap‑plied. The work becomes more robust, the community gains confidence and the technicians involved attain com‑petences which, the Company and the communities, will continue to benefit from in the near future.

ENGINEERING AS AN IMMINENTLY SOCIAL SCIENCEBesides its technical complexity, one of the other great challenges involved is the social and political management of the work. Technical solutions are not

and social responsibility, to which was given the utmost attention.

In the Cathedral case, at its own ini‑tiative and responsibility, Mota‑Engil requested the support of Prof. Julio Appleton (Doctorate in Civil Engi‑neering in the area of structures and full professor of Reinforced and Pre‑Stressed Concrete at Instituto Superior Técnico – Technical Superior Institute), who travelled to the site to evaluate possible abnormalities in the Cathe‑dral foundations and recommend a set of measures for their rehabilitation and reinforcement, which are currently being analysed by the client. Also, in the case of the Cathedral and the open‑ings made to analyse its foundations, the discovery of some bones led to the involvement of Instituto Nacional de Arqueología e História – INAH (Nation‑al Institute of Archaeology and History) which has, since then, closely moni‑tored the progress of the works. Nothing should be left to chance in a project of this size and exposure, neither at the level of the quality of execution and the safety of persons and buildings, or, naturally and consequently, at the level of contractual management and of all risks involved.

designed in a social vacuum. Coming together in this same project and in an urban scenario, are, among others, the federal client (the Secretaria de Comunicaciones y Transportes – Com‑munications and Transports Office), state entities (the SITEUR, Sistema de Transporte Eléctrico Urbano – Electri‑cal Urban Transport System, and the Secretaría de Movilidad del Estado de Jalisco – Office of Mobility of the State of Jalisco), supervising entities, Mota‑Engil, as builder, and hundreds of thousands of people, locals and tour‑ists, whose life, mobility and well‑being will inevitably be disrupted during the project. This means one has to see en‑gineering as an art of finding solutions that work, and working is, above all, constructing, at each moment and un‑der each unforeseen circumstance, the optimal social conditions to be able to accomplish our mission in the frame‑work of existing conditions.

The execution of the viaduct and the elevated stations, for instance, impli‑cates moving large metal structures at night using special transportation, as well as more than 200 concrete decks about 40 m each. Any problem in transport or in the delicate process of assembly planned for each night will result next morning in chaos for mil‑lions of people, in significant loss for the local economy, it would demand a very delicate management of the relationship with the client and with different stakeholders, and erode the Company's image with impact not only regionally, but also nationally. To illustrate the importance and public exposure of the project, it should be mentioned that the recent arrival of the tunnel boring machine at Port of Manzanillo and the complex process of its transport by land to Guadalajara was on national news, echoed in the newspaper and TV channels.

The liaison with SITEUR and with Office of Mobility regarding the work planning, reorganising mobility in the city, the good and timely manage‑ment of expectations, and providing information to the community, have a determining role for the effective pos‑sibility of accomplishment. In the same way, in an approach more indirect but just as relevant, the actions of social responsibility and approaching the community that Mota‑Engil is prepar‑ing are also essential. An example of this is the programme of distributing school supplies to local employees chil‑dren. We fulfil the social mission that is part of our DNA and, with the proper management of internal and external communication, we are creating social conditions to continue to move ahead smoothly.

› What is your assessment of these first months since you became responsible for special projects in the Latin Ameri-can region?I believe the current moment is less for making evaluations and more for rolling our sleeves up and keep going. If experi‑ence taught me anything, it is that time is money, so we must constantly make careful choices about the most produc‑tive activities in which to invest. The time for assessments will come, it is part of our day‑to‑day and a valuable work tool. But I personally prefer to do it at a time when I can look back and can identify me with the work done and the result obtained.

› Do you mean that you still do not see yourself in the ongoing projects?Yes and no. I see myself in the ambition, in the technical capability and desire people have to do things well. I see myself in the solidarity I found in work groups and in their sense of mission. However, and this is why I say it is time to roll our sleeves up, my concern is to channel in a productive, organised and controlled way all these positive elements I found here, so that we can achieve the sole result that matters

INTERVIEW WITH CARLOS ROLDÁN MOYAA globetrotter at Mota‑Engil Latin America

Carlos Roldán Moya has spent almost half of his 57 years accumulating a rich and varied experience. Since 2009, when he joined Mota‑Engil in the Autopista Perote‑Xalapa construction project in Mexico, he has spent his time, directly or indirectly, at the service of the Group.

In the professional career he has built since his education in Mining Engineering, completed in Argen‑tina, his homeland, he passed through a handful of benchmark companies in the construction industry and almost a dozen countries, including Spain, Chile, Ecuador, Colombia, Portugal, Italy, Peru, and Mexico.

Returning to Mexico in 2015 as director for special projects of the Latin Ameri‑can sub‑holding company, he speaks about his new duties, especially about the works on the tunnel of line 3 of the Guadalajara light metro, one of the projects that has absorbed a great deal of his attention and expertise.

in this company: to comply with the client, the company and the commu‑nity which we serve! And here, yes, I believe the margin for evolution is still great. But I also believe that, in this company, that is a path that will never be concluded no matter how much we continue to evolve.

› Why did you decide to estab-lish your work base in Guadala-jara when the head office of the sub-holding company is in Mexico City?Precisely, as I was saying, because time is money. Today we have in Guadala‑jara a fantastic project, in which we have invested for about a year and which we must (and will) complete in another two. Despite having, fortunately, other impor‑tant projects in the region and even here in Mexico [editor’s note: in Acapulco], related to tunnels, which is one of my specialities, management believed – and I agree – that the size of this metro project deserved my full attention. This doesn't mean I will not go to Mexico City, Acapulco, or anywhere else. Travelling has never been a problem for me. But these days, this is where I can best serve the Company.

The event was an opportunity for the company to make its experience in the segment known in Mexico.

The 3rd International Tunnels Course was held in Guadalajara, Mexico, jointly organised by the ITACET – Foundation for the Education and Training on Tunnelling and Un‑derground Space Use, the AMITOS – Asociación Mexicana de Ingeniería de Túneles y Obras Subterráneas (Mex‑ican Association for Engineering of Tunnels and Underground Works), the SCT – Secretaría de Comunicaciones y Transportes del Gobierno de México (Communications and Transports Of‑fice of the Government of Mexico), and the Asociación Mexicana de Ingeniería de Vías Terrestres (Mexican Associa‑tion of Roadway Engineering).

Given the significance of the under‑ground work currently underway in the region, Mota‑Engil was represented by an important delegation, includ‑ing Andrés Conesa, the Mota‑Engil México (MEM) chairman of the board, Pedro Pereira (director of production of MEM) and Carlos Roldán (director of special projects of Mota‑Engil América Latina), among other members of the technical contingent that Mota‑Engil currently has mobilised in Guadalaja‑ra. The aim was to provide specialised information, both to qualified profes‑sionals in the sector and to young and curious engineers, on topics of mecha‑nised tunnel excavation.

Over the two days of the event, whether in the presentations by the international speakers, or in parallel

sessions promoted by the companies and associations represented, every‑thing was discussed, from the most strategic issues on the option for underground mobility, to geotechni‑cal and hydrological issues and the selection of mechanical excavation equipment, including logistical is‑sues, safety, or the environmental questions to be considered in dif‑ferent types of projects concerning working in tunnels.

At Mota‑Engil booth, one of the most sought‑after of the event, the interest of attendees and lecturers centred mainly on the specific characteristics of the tunnel boring machine or‑dered specifically by Mota‑Engil for the ongoing project in Guadalajara, the strategy to deal with the subsoil of the city’s historic centre, and the methods implemented to analyse and control risks.

› In your words, what makes this project so “fantastic”?You see, in a word, I would say it’s the challenge. The immediate challenge of finding a technical solution for excavat‑ing a tunnel that crosses soil but also rock, which makes the option of a TBM tunnel boring machine or a traditional EPB machine inadvisable.

It would be impossible to bring two different “monsters” so that each would do part of the underground work, so we ordered from the supplier a mixed front‑loading (soil/rock) EPB solution which allowed us to minimise the additional pressures on the terrain in the very delicate area where we will pass, while ensuring the efficiency of progress in both types of terrain.

On the other hand, we have the challenge of programming and manag‑ing unforeseen events, mainly due the insufficient information we have about the buried services and the synchroni‑sation required between the advance of the tunnel and the underground stations, which should be almost finished structurally when the tunnel boring machine passes. If we cross‑reference this with the complexity of contractual management, the particu‑larities of relationships with clients, suppliers, partners, which are as much technical‑economic as socio‑cultural (or I would even say ethnographic), we have one of the most fantastic cocktails I have ever tried.

I could keep talking about the historic monuments we have crossed, the management of urban mobility during the work, the night work and in depth, the management of costs and risks in general, and so on; I believe you under‑stand the enthusiasm and the investment of the Company in this project.

CONSTRUCTION OF THE MINE

LEACH PAD AT THE NORTH LAGUNAS

MINE IN PERU

Mota‑Engil Peru continues a commercial

connection begun in 2009

Mota‑Engil Peru currently has under‑way the Construction of the Mine Leach Pad – Phase 6 for the Barrick Misquichilca, S. A., mining company, a client for whom the company has been working since 2009.

The mine is located in the mountain range of La Libertad region, district of Quiruvilca, province of Santiago de Chuco, at 4,200 metres above sea level in Peru.

The Construction Pad – Phase 6 consists of extending a watertight mine leach pad of approximately 30 hectares with geosynthetic materials.

The general process for the project in‑volves activities such as massive exca‑vations, exploration of the quarries with low permeability materials, landfills, placement of low permeability flooring,

installation of geosynthetics, plus pipes, and placement of overcoat.

The contracted amount for this project is 30.5 million dollars and the time for exe‑cution corresponds to 330 days, with com‑pletion expected by 26 December 2015.

Regarding to labour and equipment, the project uses a total of 680 workers, 360 of whom members of nearby communities. The amount of yellow‑line heavy equip‑ment, transports, and passenger vehi‑cles corresponds to 133 units.

In this project, and in the remaining ones, Mota‑Engil Peru shows once again its social commitment, by hiring local suppliers and creating direct work for people living in nearby communities, which, in this case, represent more than 50% of the personnel working on the project.

The Rehabilitation and Improvement of the Huancavelica-Lircay Motorway work has begun on provided by the Vial Jaylli Consortium, formed by Mota‑Engil Peru, JJC and Construtora Upaca companies.

THE WORK OF ELEVATING THE TAILINGS DAM

The work will be done for the mining company Antamina

In a private bidding process, Mota‑Engil Peru was awarded the construction work of the project Elevating the Tailings Dam. The work will have a term of approximately four months, with an investment of 5.7 million dollars by the mining company Antamina, a company with which Mota‑Engil has been working since 1996.

The mine is located in Peru, in San Marcos district, region of Ancash, and is 4,300 metres above sea level. Given the constant growth in the wa‑ter mirror of the tailings deposit lev‑el, the operating plan provides that it will not be necessary to raise the crown of the tailings dam over the next few years, since its volumetric capacity meets the storage conditions

of the probable maximum precipitation (PMP), always maintaining a minimum free border of 2.0 m.

The project Elevating the Tailings Dam – Phase V, includes various works namely filling the filters for the regrowth of the dam, constructing a concrete curb and making it watertight by installing a geomembrane.

to linking Huancavelica with other regions such as Ayacucho, Apurímac and Ica. The investment corresponds to over 400  million nuevos soles (over 100 million euros) and will use 50,000 cubic metres of asphalt road surface. The project also includes the construction of three bridges, the excavation of 2.7 million cubic metres, and moving of 900,000 cubic metres of earth in operations of earth moving, improvements and landfills.

Due to the rugged terrain and the zone's intense climate (rains and thunderstorms), the Vial Jaylli Consortium companies have programmed the use of a set of high engineering techniques, to allow completion of the work in the time period established, according to the highest quality standards of the industry.

To this end, starting February 2017, the inhabitants of this zone in Peru will be able to enjoy the benefits of a safer, high quality motorway, which will give a boost to the local economy.

The first corresponds to the project Civil Works and Structures Piers MU1 and MU2 and was awarded to Mota‑Engil Peru for the total amount of 24.5 million dollars. The second, which was awarded in a private tender, corresponds to the manufacturing of piles and is 22.9 mil‑lion dollars.

The above‑referenced work is part of a vast ongoing investment plan by Petroperú, valued at 2,730 million dollars. This project, extremely important to the development of the country, is located on the northern coast of Peru, in the province of Talara, region of Piura.

MOTA‑ENGIL PERU WILL CONTRIBUTE TO THE MODERNISATION OF TALARA REFINERY

CIVIL WORKS ON THE STRUCTURES OF PIERS MU1 AND MU2The project includes the execution of maritime and port works such as the new hybrid pier (MU2), which will be used during the construction phase of the project Modernisation of the Talara Refinery to unload equipment and material, and later in the operating phase to load/unload liquid products from the refinery. Other works correspond to actions of lesser complexity on the existing liquid cargo pier (MU1), namely removing the boat moorings and replacing them with fast escape hooks.

The activity by Mota‑Engil Peru on these two projects will include dredging work, with a volume to be dredged in the pier zone: 116,900  m3 and a volume to be dredged in the canal zone of 55,000 m3, performing dynamic pile driving tests, the placement of 246 vertical and inclined metal piles.

PIER PLATFORM After completion of the pile emplacement using maritime means, a work surface will be installed with pre‑fabricated reinforced concrete elements, which, in this case, correspond to beams and slabs. Previously, the piles will be welded to

steel corbels to give temporary support to the group of pre‑fabricated beams and slabs and, as a result, to the concrete in situ, until it hardens.

The work also involves the placement of 13 moorings for a 75‑ton load, construction of a berthing dolphin and mooring dolphin, installation of two independent drainage systems, for clean water and polluted water, and intervention in the electrical installation.

MANUFACTURE OF PILES

In the second contract awarded to Mota‑Engil Peru, the work consists of driving pre‑fabricated 40 x 40 cm section piles for the foundation of various tanks and structures of Talara Refinery.

The total length of the pre‑fabricated piles is 72,780 metres.

This project, which is extremely important to the development of the country, is located on the northern coast of Peru, in the province of Talara, region of Piura.

ECB WINS THE BID FOR WORK IN THE STATE

OF MARANHÃO

Contract involves the implementation of 150 km

of rail line for VALE mining company, for 243 million euros

Mota‑Engil signed, through ECB, two new contracts with VALE totalling 777  million reais (about 243 million euros) to duplicate part of the Carajás rail line, in State of Maranhão, corresponding to implementing Blocks A2, A3 and A4.

This rail line is owned by VALE – Empresa de Mineração, and is used to transport ore from Carajás (the exploration site, located in the State of Pará) to Port of São Luis, in Maranhão, where 350,000 passengers and about 120,000,000 tonnes of ore f low every year.

The contract covers nine segments with a total rail line extension of approximately 150 km and includes the execution of the infrastructure, earth

moving, sub‑ballast, drainage, and current and special civil engineering works, with the construction of 12 bridges and ten viaducts.

In this work special attention is given to earth moving (3.8 million m³, to be done in two shifts), since the heavy rain between January and June make the works more difficult to execute.

The work on Block A2 started in May and must be completed in December 2016. As for Blocks A3 and A4, they are expected to be completed in June 2017.

ECB will carry out work for VALE mining company in three mines in Minas Gerais State.

One of the contracts is for the Fábrica mine, in the amount of over 40.3  million reais, and is designed to gather and channel the deep waters outside the VALE area, ensuring its unaltered quality.

The contract is designed to implement roads to allow the safe traffic of equip‑ment and vehicles operating during the drains constructing phase performed at the bottom of the valley.

The work also includes the implemen‑tation of drains at the bottom of the canyon, with a cross section correspond‑ing to the shaping of the land, followed by placement of a geotextile blanket and execution of the rockfill (drainage layer) in the specific dimensions of the filters, and finally the recoating of drains with protective coarse sterile.

Also for VALE, ECB was awarded the contract for the construction and exten‑sion of shallow drain channels for water run‑off from Jangada mine and Córrego do Feijão mine, which includes the construction of a sump in the Jacó mine and environmental protection

work. The drain channels have an extension of 90 metres in Mangaba channel ( Jangada mine), 340 metres in Jaco III channel ( Jangada mine) and 230 metres in Menezes III (Córrego Feijão mine). The works also include the execution of various deep drainage services in Córrego do Feijão mine and the 8,000 m² sump at Jangada mine, on top of Jacó III drain.

The sum of these support contracts to the activity in the three VALE mines in Brazil totals over 56 million reais (about 15.3 million euros).

The contract is designed to implement roads to allow the safe traffic of equipment and vehicles operating during the drains constructing phase performed at the bottom of the valley.

Affiliate company of Mota‑Engil Group is awarded four new contracts

for waste management and urban cleaning in several States of Brazil

At the end of 2014, SUMA invested in re‑entering the Brazilian market, by acquiring the CONSITA company, in partnership with Empresa Construtora Brasil (ECB), a Brazilian company in the construction sector and affiliate of the Mota‑Engil Group.

CONSITA, in its 43 years of activity, has dedicated 25 years to developing solutions for managing waste. At the start of the 1990s, it pioneered the process of privatising urban cleaning services in Belo Horizonte, the capital of Minas Gerais state.

With awards in the states of Minas Gerais, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, the current provisions of Consita

include the annual collection of about 100 thousand tonnes of miscellaneous, selective and hospital waste, urban cleaning activities, and the implemen‑tation and management of municipal landfills.

COLLECTING RECYCLABLES Also in Belo Horizonte, CONSITA obtained a contract to provide the services of solid waste collecting in the east, northeast and northwest regions of the municipality, sorting and select‑ing different household recyclable materials – paper, metal, plastic and glass – in the modalities point‑to‑point for paper/metal/plastic and door‑to‑door for paper/metal/plastic/glass, as well as transporting it to the waste treatment centre.

Lasting five years and with a turnover of over 21 million reais, this provision of services will reach a population estimated at 700,000 inhabitants, thus extending the universe of activity of this company to close to two million inhabitants served, and strengthening the presence of this affiliate in Minas Gerais state.

cutting services in the municipality of Varginha, state of Minas Gerais.

BEGINNING OF ACTIVITY IN RIO GRANDE DO SULCONSITA has just been awarded its first contract in Rio Grande do Sul state. It was chosen to collect house‑hold waste and transport it to the sorting station, which is projected to move 4,000 tonnes of waste per month, serving a population of approximately 215,000 persons in the municipality of São Leopoldo.

With this new award, CONSITA expands to the southernmost state of Brazil and continues to strengthen its

position as a benchmark operator in the area of waste management in Brasil.

WEST SEA: ONE YEAR AT

VIANA SHIPYARD

In one year the company has created about 200 jobs

West Sea is a company created by Marti‑fer Group to manage the subconcession of lands and infrastructures of the former ENVC – Estaleiros Navais de Viana do Castelo, E.P., in May the company celebrated its one year presence inside the shipyards.

After taking possession of the infrastruc‑ture in May 2014, in one year the company has created about 200 jobs, 80% of which are held by former ENVC employees.

During the last year, and after a process of the shipyard requalification and equip‑ment repairing, the shipyard has been fully operational, and has already repaired or reconverted over 45 ships from all over the world.

As for naval construction, the company has in its order book two hotel ships, currently under construction, which should be completed at the begining of 2016. In July, the Company has also

signed the contract for the construc‑tion of two Ocean Patrol Vessels for the Portuguese Navy, whose construction is scheduled to start still in 2015.

The first year of activity was marked with a ceremony attended by the Portuguese prime minister, Pedro Passos Coelho, and the national defence minister, José Pedro Aguiar Branco.

During the last year, and after a process of the shipyard requalification and equipment repairing, the shipyard has been fully operational, and has already repaired or reconverted over 45 ships from all over the world.

Martifer Solar will be responsible for the construction of four solar plants with a total capacity of 57 Mwp of solar photovoltaic projects in Jordan, which are part of the National Renewable Energy Plan for this country, currently importing 95% of its energy needs – costing about one‑fifth of the GDP of the country.

In the order book of 57 Mwp, there are three projects with an individual capacity of 11 Mwp located near the city of Ma’an, in South‑Central Jordan, and one with a capacity of 24 Mwp

which will be constructed near the city of Mafraq.

These projects are four of the seven to be developed under a 207 million dollar financing concluded in May and that gathered the a IFC, Bahrain’s Arab Bank, the European Arab Bank, the MWO, the FinnFund and OPEC’s International Development Fund, as well as the World Bank, which will provide investment guarantees through the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA).

In order to enable the full training and use of the Success Factors by Mota‑Engil Ambiente e Serviços employees, the project is designed to include a training effort of approximately 3,000 hours, which has been developed internally and is estimated to last until September 2015.

TALENTThe Programme aims to identify,

develop and retain talent in the Group

In line with current trends regarding the management of human resources, and in an effort to respond to the challenges of Talent Management, Mota‑Engil Group will start the Mota‑Engil Emerging Talent Programme (MEET), to identify, develop and retain talent in the Group, in order to ensure response to future challenges.

The MEET Programme addresses this concern, presenting itself as a programme directed towards the high‑potential youth in the Group, and aiming to encourage and act as an accelerator for the development of employees with talent, and favouring their preparation to assume positions with greater responsi‑bility and seniority.

WITH THIS PROGRAMME, WE HOPE TO ACHIEVE THE FOLLOWING OBJECTIVES:› To identify young talent in the different

geographical areas, based on a set of pre‑defined criteria;

› To develop the competences consid‑ered critical for this segment;

The Foundation, in partnership with Mota‑Engil Peru and with the support of Piura University and the Regional Office of Education of Piura, launched in Peru the first edition of Manuel António da Mota Foundation Award, seeking to build on the experience and example represented by Manuel António da Mota Award, which is already in its sixth edition in Portugal.

Manuel António da Mota Foundation Award seeks to promote creativity, innovation and best educational practic‑es in the schools of the Peruvian region of Piura. It is the result of a protocol signed on 14 October 2014 between the entities promoting the Award and the Peruvian educational institutions that support it.

in the northern region of the country, extends across an area of 35,892.5 km2, and has a population of over 1.7 million inhabitants. Its more than 2,400  learn‑ing centres provide elementary and secondary education for approximately 191,000 students.

The Award, governed by its own regula‑tion, is divided into two categories: the School category, which seeks to recognise the trajectory and successes achieved in innovative projects designed to improve educational success; and the Teacher category, which seeks to honour teachers who have gained a reputation for training students in the schools in the region.

In the School category, the award presented is intended to finance the project submitted by the institution, while the award in the Teacher category is to fund a scholarship for the winning teacher to enrol in a post‑graduate programme at a Portuguese university.

The application period ended in August, and the selection of the winning candi‑dates was made by a jury consisting of members of Mota‑Engil Peru Foundation and Peruvian personalities with recog‑nised experience and knowledge in the educational field.

The Award will be presented at a ceremony on 12 November at the Lima Municipal Theatre, an iconic building in the Peruvian capital, which was inaugu‑rated in 1920 and has been recently remodelled, having all is beauty and splendour restored.

LAUNCH CULTURAL AND PEDAGOGICAL

PROJECT

This project aims to promote education, promotion

and valuation of the Portuguese cultural heritage

in school communities

for exploration, proposed activities and school trips, so that teachers can develop and work the theme of heritage with their students; pedagogical Itineraries contemplating suggestions for visits to institutions or locations representative of different types of heritage; and Didactic units integrating digital didactic material with proposals for pedagogical explora-tion of various topics related to heritage.

The project started in May 2015 with the pedagogical itineraries, and the begin-ning of the other phases is scheduled to start with the academic year 2015 – 2016.

Manuel António da Mota Foundation, which includes in its collection of activities a wide range of projects in the educational area, through support and partnerships for education that have been developing, undertakes this new investment along with a publishing group of recognised competence, experience and prestige in its area of activity. This has certainly contributed greatly to the predictable and desirable success of this effort in promot-ing, fostering and preserving the heritage of Portugal, a greater asset and a funda-mental legacy for the construction of its secular identity.

This was followed by a visit to an exhibition of some of the projects submitted to the competition held in the areas of the Tâmega Entrepreneurial Institute (IET).

The quality of the projects submitted was unanimously praised thus showing an evident improvement compared with the two previous editions, thus patenting the efforts of the entire educational commu‑nity and the effort to make the best of this initiative, which will continue in the next academic year.

The closing ceremony for the 3rd edition of Young Entrepreneurs – Building the Future project took place in the audito‑rium of the Instituto Empresarial do Tâmega (Tâmega Entrepreneurial Insti‑tute – IET) at the closing of the academic year 2014 – 2015.

In the same sense, Rui Barreira, director of Braga District Centre at the Instituto da Segurança Social. I.P. (Social Security Institute), stressed the need of this work, which arose from a complete symbio‑sis among the local government, civil society and Social Security.

Few months after its opening, Associa‑ção de Solidariedade de Santo André de Codessoso, a private welfare institu‑tion operating in the parish of Codes‑soso, municipality of Celorico de Basto, inaugurated the works of expanding its retirement home to accommodate 46 people, nearly doubling its capacity. The association also monitors 25 people in a regime of home support.

The parish of Codessoso is the birth‑place of Manuel António da Mota, and the construction of the retirement home on 8 June 2014, his birthday, was largely supported by Mota family, Mota‑Engil and the Foundation, the latter with connected with the expansion work.

The mayor of Celorico de Basto, Joaquim Mota e Silva, said the expansion was necessary and positive to respond to an enormous demand from the community, adding that this was a significant step in the history of this institution that honours the work of Manuel António da Mota.
