A letter from our President...Greetings friends,

Could this October be any better here in Maine? We have been enjoying such wonderful weather this year. The leaves were gorgeous and for the most part are still hanging in there, thanks to the lingering warmth. While the non-seasonal weather is part of a disturbing trend globally, it's hard to not simply enjoy it and feel lucky.

It was so warm on the Saturday of our Empty Bowl, though, that a few of us were wondering whether anyone would want to leave the outdoors and come eat hot soups on such a day. But we needn't have worried, we had a record crowd! And a marvelous evening. The Communications Committee did a great job publicizing the event, the soup makers excelled at a wide variety of soups, desserts were yummy and everyone worked so hard to make the evening enjoyable for the attendees. It was great to see so many of our family and long-time friends there and we're fortunate to get so much help from the Lemieux clan!

As District One Governor Anne Rash told us recently "...remember to celebrate your successes..." and this was definitely one to celebrate! Thank you to everyone who worked so hard to make this favorite annual fundraiser such a success.

Governor Anne also shared many other things with us when she and Governor-elect Linda Ring attended our October program meeting. That morning Anita, Pam & I toured the Holiday Inn by the Bay with Anne & Linda to get an idea of how next spring's conference will flow, then lunched at DiMillo's. Then the 2018 Conference committee met just before the program meeting. Plans for the conference are well underway and we'll be asking for everyone's help soon for various conference-related tasks.

March -- holidays

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_unofficial_observances_by_dateOur Club did it again! 131 excellent condition novels and

self help books were donated and evenly distributed by Arlene Hanson for the prisoners at Cumberland County Jail and the Windham Correction Center .Kaitlyn Labrozzi, Windham Correction Librarian, said

"book donations go a long way here at the Windham Facility, so I want to thank Altrusa Club as much as I can."Jennifer Galletta , Cumberland County Jail ,head of their Educational Department and Librarianis so impressed with the many recent New York Bestsellers. Jennifer mentioned how the inmates appreciate the variety of books and in such good condition. This book donation project is in its third year. In the last three years we have donated approximately 440 books.

A Thank you from Maine Correctional

Good Afternoon Arlene and Marie,

I wanted to thank you both and everyone else involved at the Altrusa Club of Portland Maine for these fantastic book donations. It was a pure joy sorting through all of your book donations. Each book was in fantastic condition and was a book that I knew would have many readers.

Book donations go a long way here at the Maine Correctional Center Library and its three library branches, but your donations went above and beyond in providing a large variety of quality material. Truly, thank you.

This facility's libraries and it's many avid readers can't thank you enough for thinking of us.

Beyond Grateful,

Kaitlyn

October 18th Program meeting was attended by special guests Anne Rash and Linda Ring(Governor and Governor-elect). Anne spoke to planning highlights of 2018 Portland Conference. She presented the Portland Club with an award for most impressive number of books distributed in the community.

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE

What can YOU do to help grow our membership?Bring a Guest/Prospective member to our MEMBERSHIP DRIVEdinner meeting on Wednesday, November 15th at the Fireside Inn.We will do the rest:

We will pay for their meal.We will educate them about ALTRUSA.We will help you mentor them.

If you don't already have somebody in mind -- like a friend, relative, or neighbor -- think about all the industries that are not currently represented in our club -- like Banks, Credit Unions, Insurance Companies, Post Office, CMP, Time Warner, Sappi Mill, Fairchild, Idexx, Pharmacists, Nurses, Dental Assistants, Hair Dressers, and Grocery Store clerks and managers. Who is your favorite contact at these places?Who do you bowl with or exercise with or belong to a Book Club with?In the process of inviting someone, you will be telling them a bit about ALTRUSA and thus spreading the word to someone who may have never heard of us -- that's great publicity. We'll continue their education of Altrusa at the Membership Drive. So put on your 'thinking cap' for whom to invite and don't be shy about approaching them.Thank you in advance for your help.Trish Maxim

Pam Lemieux and I made a club visit to the Quebec club on behalf of District One in October and we had the best time. The Quebec ladies treated us to a marvelous day. Adelice Lafrance, Madeleine Ferguson and Raymonde Cote picked us up at our hotel for the adventure. On our drive up the St Lawrence we stopped briefly to see Sainte Anne de Beaupre Basilica then traveled on to the base of Mont Sainte Anne where Francoise Martel walked us and the other Quebec ladies around the resort to enjoy the fall colors. After that it was cocktails and appetizers at Georgette Rondeau's lovely home, Her gardens are beautiful and her husband is as sweet, funny and welcoming as Georgette is. Then we attended their meeting; President Jocelyne Picard and everyone was so thoughtful in sharing their meeting with us. it's a busy club with lots of wonderful projects. After the meeting we had dinner then took a tour through the Old City on the way back to our hotel. It was lots of fun, lots of laughs, lots of English/French language blips, and lots of sharing of Altrusa.

I can't wait for Convention in Quebec in 2021 - you know it's going to be wonderful !! ~

Keep those cans and bottles coming!

Sue E. KingThis is an excerpt from an email we received from Sue E King’s cousin Carole recently. She had seen the call for items for the Barron Center in our last newsletter. It’s nice to know that our service project ripples out to our friends. And it’s a lovely memorial to our much-missed Sue E.

Ladies, We are delivering 18 gift bags at 9:30 tomorrow. Most of the gift bags are more suitable for the ladies but several would be proper for either. There is one that is specifically for a veteran. We're hoping that these can be given on Veteran's Day. Sue's dad, husband and brother were/are all retired military so that would have been important to her. Attached is a photo of the gift bags taken this morning before they were packed for travel. There is also a 4x6 card with some information about Susan in each bag and attached as well. Best/Carole

Finance Committee NewsAltrusa Calendar Raffle Ready For SaleThe Altrusa Calendar Raffle is ready for sale. A PDF version will be emailed to all Portland Altrusans so you can easily email it to family and friends. This is our major fund raiser this year and we need you all to sell these raffle tickets. HINT: They make excellent stocking stuffers at Christmas time.At the Empty Bowl Supper on October 21st, the ladies at the door (Marcia, Geri and Pam S) did an excellent job selling 25 calendar raffle tickets. That is a good start on our raffle sales. A copy of the Calendar Raffle is attached to this Altrusagram. Instructions on how the raffle works and how to purchase the raffle ticket, including our mailing address, are on the calendar.

EMPTY BOWL SUPPER WAS A SUCCESS The Empty Bowl Supper, held at the Woodfords Congregational Church Hall in Portland, was a resounding success thanks to all of the Portland Altrusans who donated soups, desserts, miscellaneous items like coffee, crackers, tea, paper products, etc. People attending were given 16 different soups to select from, and second helpings (plus) were encouraged. Altrusans are known for our sweet tooth, and the Empty Bowl Supper had plenty of assorted desserts to satisfy that craving. Again this year, bread was donated by Big Sky Bakery. (If ever you are shopping for baked bread or pastries, please be sure to patronize Big Sky Bakery and while you are there please thank them for their generosity to the Portland Altrusa Club.) The Altrusans working the supper were awesome. A little before 3:30PM we entered the hall to find that we needed to set up all the tables and chairs, in addition to getting the crockpots wired up, the bowls run through the dishwasher and the pots of soups heated up (and I’m told ‘taste tested’). We managed to get it all done and we were serving soup at 4:30PM. Before 5PM, we were looking for spaces to set up additional tables!! The crowd was streaming in at a steady pace. It appears our members and the Communications Committee did a great job getting the word out. Based on the proceeds we collected, we had 144 people attending the supper, not including the ‘little ones’ (children between 6 days and 2 years old). At the end of the evening, with so many Altrusans helping to clean up, we were able to close it up in record time. We did not start any clean up until 6:30PM. However, we washed all of the dishes, packed up all of the leftover food and supplies, broke down the tables and chairs and were out of the hall by 7PM! I noticed that the table breakdown was helped by some Lemieux family members. I saw 2-year old Maeva Lemieux assisting her Mom and Dad in moving some tables. She already has the ‘Altrusa Spirit’! Thank You Portland Altrusa Members! It was hard work, but it was also a lot of fun, and all for a good cause. The proceeds from this event will be donated to Project FEED, which is a local food pantry which happens to be located at Woodfords Church Hall.
