The Alternative Vote:How It Works
A Life: Downloaded presentation
“Voting is the most precious right of every citizen, and we have a moral obligation to ensure the integrity of our voting process.”
-Hillary Clinton
In this presentation...
●You will learn what AV means for the voter
●You will find information about how votes are counted
The Voter
1)The candidates are usually listed in alphabetical order
2)You (the voter) decide who your preferred candidate is, your second favourite and so on.
3)You list your preferences in numbered order.
Candidate Preference
Alan B'Stard 1
Jim Hacker 3
Peter Mannion 2
Jo Porter 4
The increase in complexity is absolutely minimal for the voter.
It's worth noting that you don't have to put a number beside each candidate.
The Counting Process
● The winner needs 50%+1 of the vote total.
● If this isn't achieved in the first round, there are further rounds.
● For each round, the candidate with the lowest votes is eliminated and the preferences are transferred.
● For example, if Jo Porter is eliminated and everyone who voted for her put Jim Hacker as number 2, her votes are transferred to him.
● In this example, it takes three rounds to complete the election. Jim Hacker is declared the winner by 1250 votes.

Summary
● The Alternative Vote is not complex on the voter side.
● The winner needs over 50% of the vote.
● It can mean multiple rounds and a longer counting process.
● A person that the electorate initially finds second best or worse can still win.
