WHY ARE COMMON CORE STATE STANDARDS IMPORTANT?

Academic standards are important because they help ensure that all students, no matter where they live, are prepared for success in college and the workforce. Standards provide an important first step — a clear roadmap for learning for teachers, parents, and students. Having clearly- defined goals helps families and teachers work together to ensure that students succeed. They also will help your child develop critical thinking skills that will prepare him or her for college and career.

The National Honor Society applications were delivered last week. GHS is seeking accepting applications from qualified potential members for the 2013-2014 school year. If you are a senior and believe you have a 90 or higher cumulative average or a junior with a cumulative average of 3.5 or higher, please go by Ms. Zahedi's office in the counselor's office and put your name on the list. The deadline for completed packets is October 29th, 2013, at 3:30 pm. A link to the packet can be found on GHS’s main website.

If you have any questions, please contact

Mr. Tucker in Room VO-3 or Mr. Bush in Room 152.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FOR STUDENTS AND PARENTS: The tutoring bus will begin running this week on Mondays and Wednesdays. Our teachers offer extra help before and after school. A copy of this year’s tutoring schedule can be found on our school website. We encourage your child to take advantage of this opportunity to improve his/her academic standing. Please take a look at the tutoring schedule!

IMPORTANT ACT/PLAN STRATEGY FOR STUDENTS: *When students hear that the last 5 minutes remain, all students should select an answer choice, remain consistent with the answer choice, completely bubble in all remaining answers, and continue to make educated guesses. No question should be left unanswered. Parents, please encourage and remind your child to use the strategies taught in class.

The Gulfport High Gamers Club now has a Twitter account. Follow @Gulfport_Gamers for updates on meeting times and and other activities. Mr. Gault is the club sponsor of the GHS Gamers Club.

O’KEEFE CAFÉ NOW OPEN AT GULFPORT HIGH SCHOOL

When you talk to the teacher, don’t worry about covering everything. Instead, keep the conversation focused on the most important things. Ask questions such as: *Is my child comfortable using coordinates in algebra and geometry? *Can my child break a complex problem down into parts and apply the math he or she knows to problems outside of mathematics? *Does my child have the knowledge to learn advanced mathematics after high school if he/she so chooses? *Is my child becoming skilled at gathering information, evaluating sources, and citing material accurately? *Is my child asserting and defending claims, conveying what he or she understands about what he or she has read and researched? *Is my child speaking clearly and appropriately, listening attentively when discussing findings and evidence, and building on others’ good ideas while expressing his or her ideas persuasively? Ask to see samples of your child’s work. Ask the teacher questions such as: Is this piece of work satisfactory? How could it be better? How can I help my child improve or excel in this area?
