The l a t e s t ADABAS System Mod i f i ca t i on SM321-5 was j u s t sent out. Th is i s a good oppor tun i ty t o remind everyone o f what i s inc luded i n an SM and how they are t o be appl i ed.

ADABAS System M o d i f i c a t i o n s a r e s e n t p e r i o d i c - a l l y t o each i n s t a l l a t i o n . Each SM i n c l u d e s a l i s t i n g and a card deck o f t he cards necessary t o update the ADABAS System. Each SM w i l l a lso i nc lude v e r i f i e s aga ins t t he assembly dates o f e f f ec ted 1 oad modules t o i nsu re zaps are being app l ied aga ins t t he c o r r e c t l o a d modules. Comments a r e i n c l u d e d t o exp la in t he reason f o r t h e SM. Each i n s t a l l a t i o n i s expected t o i n s t a l 1 the SM upon rece ip t .

System mod i f i ca t i ons a re designed t o use standard IBM u t i l i t i e s and se rv i ce aids. ADABAS load modules d i s t r i b u t e d as p a r t o f the ADABAS.V321.LOAD data s e t are maintained us ing the IBM se rv i ce a ids IMASPZAP and IMBLIST. IMASPZAP i s used t o m o d i f y system c o n s t a n t s and t o app l y updates t o t h e modules. IMBLIST i s used t o d i sp lay the record o f IMASPZAP mod i f i ca t i ons re ta ined i n each 1 oad module.

IMASPZAP func t i ons are used t o v e r i f y module con- t e n t s (VER), rep lace module contents (REP), and t o e n t e r i d e n t i f i c a t i o n i n t o t h e module r e c o r d o f mod i f i ca t i ons (IDRDATA). The module and CSECT name are s p e c i f i e d o the r name card. I n add i t i on , comment cards(* ) a re inc luded t o exp la in the reason f o r the update. I n the comments each system m o d i f i c a t i o n i s da ted, i d e n t i f i e d f o r r e f e r e n c e purposes (E.G. 2321-0101, and a s e v e r i t y l e v e l (SL) i s provided. The s e v e r i t y l e v e l s used and t h e i r meanings are as fo l l ows :

SL 4 - Cosmet ic improvement -- does n o t a f f e c t func t ion ing.

SL 8 - Funct ional c o r r e c t i o n under unusual circumstances.

A l l IMASZAP runs and the c u r r e n t IMBLIST should be s tored i n the ADABAS maintenance record.

ADABAS source modules d i s t r i b u t e d as p a r t o f t he ADABAS.V321.SOURCE data s e t are maintained us ing the IBM u t i l i t y IEBUPDTE. IEBUPDTE i s used t o apply updates t o t he modules. Each module contains a card i d e n t i f y i n g each update. This card contains the date d i s t r i b u t e d along w i t h a sequence number. Each

update i s a l so accompanied by comments desc r i b ing t h e upda te and t h e a p p r o p r i a t e sequence number.

IEBUPDTE f u n c t i o n s a r e used t o add, d e l e t e , and rep lace source statements.

A f t e r updat ing a source module, care must be taken t h a t i t i s assembled and r e - l i n k e d i n t o a l l modules o f which i t i s a par t .

The main tenance Data S e t (ADABAS.V321.MAINT) i s intended t o record documentation on a l l changes made t o ADABAS Data Sets s ince the i n i t i a l re1 ease o f t h e ADABAS re lease 3.2.1 was "FROZEN". I n a d d i t i o n t o l o a d and /o r sou rce module changes, each sys tem m o d i f i c a t i o n s e n t t o t h e u s e r w i l l i n c l u d e JCL and e n t r i e s t o i nc lude i n the maintenance Data Set. These e n t r i e s w i l l summarize the source and l oad module changes.

SOURCE CODE VALIDATION

This year s o f t w a r e a g i n i t i a t e d another escrow/custodi a1 agreement i n a d d i t i o n t o the one s t i l l i n f o r c e w i t h C i t i co rp . s o f t w a r e a g experienced d i f f i c u l t i e s i n v a l i d a t i n g the ADABAS source code a t C i t i c o r p . "We were the ones who ' pushed ' C i t i c o r p i n t o t h e agreement because I persona l ly wanted t h a t e x t r a ' p r e s t i g e ' and 'secur- i t y ' f o r our c l i e n t s -- i n our mutual, long-term bes t i n t e r e s t , " sa id John Maguire.

Therefore, on September 13, 1977, t he source code f o r V e r s i o n 3.2.1. o f ADABAS was s u c c e s s f u l l y val i da ted a t I n t e r n a t i o n a l Computer Programs, Inc. Dan Skwarcan represent ing the ADABAS Users Group, Peter Schnel l and J im Addis represent ing s o f t - w a r e a g, and I n t e r n a t i o n a l Computer Programs, Inc., the source code cus tod ia l agent, p a r t i c i p a t e d i n the v a l i d a t i o n proceedings a t the Lane Bryant 1 Computer Center, I n d i anapol i s, Indiana. Two modules 1 compr ised t h e v a l i d a t i o n t e s t . The two modules va l i da ted were ADADAK and ADALDZ. Fo l lowing the v a l i d a t i o n , the source code tape was deposi ted w i t h

ICP recognized a need i n the Computer I ndus t r y f o r a sof tware escrow serv ice.

There were a few problems encountered dur ing the v a l i d a t i o n wh ich w i l l be improved d u r i n g f u t u r e procedures. Th is i s a f i r s t i n t he sof tware indus- t r y . We w i l l c o n t i n u e t o s t r i v e t o improve t h e whole process and s e t an example f o r o ther compa- n i e s . Someday soon, c l i e n t s w i l l demand t o see evidence o f such a procedure before consider ing a sof tware vendor. s o f t w a r e a g i s pleased t o be the leader i n t h i s endeavor.

D u r i n g t h e b u s i n e s s s e s s i o n t h e ADABUG Repor t was discussed. Most users f e l t t h a t t h i s v e h i c l e was e f f e c t i v e i n h e l p i n g r e c o g n i z e problem areas i n advance.

Nex t on t h e Agenda was an i n f o r m a l p r e s e n t a t i o n by S h e l l on t h e c o n c e p t s o f ADAMINT a n d ENVELOPE. C u r r e n t l y S h e l l and PAC a r e u s i n g ENVELOPE and b o t h expec t t o s w i t c h t o ADAMINT. I t was s t r e s s e d t h a t t h e use o f t h i s p r o d u c t enhances t h e c o n t r o l t h e DBA has over t h e use o f t h e Data Base. O t h e r b e n e f i t s i n c l ude improved r e 1 i a b i l i ty , e a s i e r cod i ng , and q u i c k e r implementat ion. Any q u e s t i o n s on t h e use o f t h i s p r o d u c t can be d i r e c t e d t o e i t h e r i n s t a l l a t i o n .

Our n e x t p r e s e n t a t i o n was by Ralph Ghirozan on t h e r o l e o f t h e DBA. T h i s i s an ongoing s e r i e s . Each i n s t a l l a t i on g i v e s a h a l f hour p r e s e n t a t i o n f o l l o w e d by a quest ion-and-answer p e r i o d . R a l p h ' s p resen ta - t i o n was an exce l l e n t a n a l y s i s o f t h e DBA f u n c t i o n . I espec i a1 l y agree w i t h h i s o b s e r v a t i o n t h a t t h e Data D i c t i o n a r y i s perhaps t h e most i m p o r t a n t t o o l f o r t h e DBA. This , o f course, was an e x c e l l e n t t i e - i n f o r t h e a f t e r n o o n p r e s e n t a t i o n o f Datamanager, t h e Data D i c t i o n a r y developed by MSP L td .

The f i r s t o f f i c i a l meet ing o f ADAGROUP Hawaii was h e l d on August 15, 1977. Among t h e 36 a t tendees were r e p r e s e n t a t i v e s from each o f t h e p a r t i c i p a t i n g ADABAS i n s t a l l a t i ons, i n c l u d i n g f u t u r e ADABAS users f o r t h e S t a t e o f Hawai i , Department o f Educa t ion and S t a t e o f Hawai i J u d i c i a r y .

The meet ing was opened w i t h a b r i e f p r e s e n t a t i o n g i v e n by a r e p r e s e n t a t i v e o f each a c t i v e ADABAS u s e r and served t o i n f o r m t h e a t tendees as t o t h e s t a t u s and use o f ADABAS a t each i n s t a l l a t i o n . Our s p e c i a l g u e s t speaker was Mr. Dav id Del Rio, who d iscussed c o n c e p t s and t e c h n i q u e s f o r ADABAS F i l e D e s i g n , Recovery, U t i l i t i e s , and Performance.

T h i s f i r s t meet ing was p r i m a r i l y a " g e t t o know one a n o t h e r " a n d i t was s u c c e s s f u l i n e s t a b l i s h i n g cummunicat ion and r a p p o r t w i t h t h e o t h e r users as w e l l as i n c r e a s i n g t h e u s e r ' s knowledge and under- s t a n d i n g o f t h e ADABAS system.

I n September, ADAGROUP Hawaii was honored w i t h a v i s i t f r o m Mr. John Magui re, t h e h i g h l i g h t o f which was a d i n n e r m e e t i n g a t t e n d e d by J o h n a n d Ann M a g u i r e , D a v i d D e l R i o , a n d t h e ADAGROUP H a w a i i members. The members wou ld l i k e t o express t h e i r a p p r e c i a t i o n t o Mr. Magui re f o r a most memorable event .

I n November, t h e ADAGROUP H a w a i i members m e t t o d i s c u s s t h e Change/Enchancement Request t h a t w i l l be submi t ted f o r t h e n e x t ADABAS I n t e r n a t i o n a l Users Conference. Pr imary c o n s i d e r a t i o n s were p l a c e d on enhancements t o Addload, ADASCRIPT+, and ADAMINT. The g r o u p w i l l be m e e t i n g a g a i n t o f i n a l i z e and c o n s o l i d a t e t h e change and enhancement r e q u e s t f o r submiss ion by t h e January 1 s t deadl ine.

Ha r r y O t t i n g e r , a ded ica ted and 1 oyal employee of s o f t w a r e a g, was hav ing l u n c h w i t h h i s w i f e , S u s i e a t t h e i r home i n Res ton , V i r g i n i a, when an a i r p l ane crashed i n t o t h e i r home and exploded, k i l l i n g bo th Har ry and Susie.

The d u t i e s o f t h e Data Base group a re : Data Base maintenance, t e c h n i - c a l suppor t , s e c u r i t y , da ta d i c t i o n a r y f u n c t i o n s , e d u c a t i o n a l suppor t f o r i n s t r u c t o r s t e a c h i n g Data Base theory , and research and development o f ADABAS and o t h e r Data Base systems. Since t h e City Un iver - s i t y has so many users a t independent i n s t a l l a t i o n s , t h e Data Base Systems Group canno t impose s tandards o f p rogramming . However, by d e v e l o p i n g a u s e r i n t e r f a c e , t h e programming standards a r e automat- i c a l l y c a r r i e d o u t by t h e i n t e r f a c e .

Our n e w e s t member, Hank S t e n n e s , spoke n e x t . Cadence I n d u s t r i e s i s a DOS/VS shop. H i s d u t i e s t h e r e a r e t h e complete maintenance o f t h e Data Base system. T h e i r Data Base i s c e n t e r e d around a sma l l number o f v e r y l a r g e f i l e s . Mr. Stennes p r a i s e d s o f t w a r e a g l s t e c h n i c a l suppor t i n h e l p i n g h im l o a d a massive 2.2 m i l l i o n r e c o r d f i l e .

Roy Wood, o f s o f t w a r e a g, gave a p r e - s e n t a t i o n on t h e Data D i c t i o n a r y be ing o f f e r e d by s o f t w a r e a g i n e a r l y 1978. Q u e s t i o n s were answered and sugges t ions accepted.

R i c h a r d Tannor o f I n t e r n a t i o n a l N i c k e l Co. (INCO) and Chairman o f t h e ADAGROUP Data D i c t i o n a r y Com- m i t t e e compared t h e proposed o f f e r i n q by s o f t - w a r e a g t o t h o s e d i c t i o n a r y l d i r e c t o r y packages a1 ready a v a i l ab le. He concluded t h a t f o r an ADABAS i n s t a l l a t i o n , t h e r e i s n o t h i n g c u r r e n t l y a v a i l a b l e t h a t i s comparable.

The meet ing began w i t h a ge t -acqua in ted hour f o l - 1 owed by i n t r o d u c t o r y comments by Dan Skwarcan f r o m Associates. The da te o f t h e upcoming Boston Confer- ence was announced. Each u s e r was reminded t o s t a r t s u b m i t t i n g Change Enhancement Requests and t o s t a r t p r e p a r i ng p r e s e t l t a t i o n s f o r t h e Boston Conference.

The f i r s t t o p i c o f d i s c u s s i o n was Data Base Adminis- t r a t i o n by L a r r y Bowman o f Associates. Da ta Base A d m i n i s t r a t i o n was d iscussed f rom a f u n c t i o n a l as we1 1 as an o r g a n i z a t i o n a l s t a n d p o i n t .

ADAMINT as t h e a p p l i c a t i o n i n t e r f a c e w i t h ADABAS was p r e s e n t e d by J i m V i l a r d o o f R. R. Done l ley & Sons. J i m f o c u s e d o n h i s e x p e r i e n c e s w i t h ADAMINT and e n t e r t a i n e d q u e s t i o n s f rom new and p o t e n t i a l ADAMINT users.

The t h i r d i t e m o f d i s c u s s i o n was R e s t a r t and Recov- e r y by Greg Bordner o f Associates. Greg focused on h i s exper ience i n t h e area o f au tomat ing r e s t a r t a f t e r machine f a i l u r e by g e n e r a t i n g t h e a p p r o p r i a t e c o n t r o l i n f o r m a t i o n f o r COPY and WARMSTART. Greg 's work i n t h i s a rea has y i e l d e d an 80% sav ings i n t i m e between machine f a i l u r e and subsequent success fu l r e c o v e r y o f pend ing t r a n s a c t i o n s .

Bob B e c k e r o f F o r e m o s t I n s u r a n c e p r e s e n t e d h i s t h o u g h t s and f i n d i n g s i n t h e a rea o f i m p r o v i n g r u n t i m e s i n ADABAS. Bob focused on t h e e f f i c i e n c i e s t o be ga ined th rough t h e p r o p e r use o f Command-ID. Bob w i l l p r e s e n t h i s f i n d i n g s i n t h i s area a t t h e Boston C o n f e r e n c e . H i s f i n d i ngs a r e s u b s t a n t i a l a n d d e f i n i t e l y a "must" f o r t h o s e o f us concerned w i t h e f f i c i e n c y .
