/ the Arguinas’s verbs In the municipality of Oliveira do Hospital, particularly in the parishes of Santa Ovaia and Nogueira do Cravo, there is a “picturesque language, “in the words of Dr. Francisco Correia das Neves, author of “The Arguinas’s verbs - The Slang of the Stone Masons from the Region of Oliveira do Hospital“. Mainly used by the ancient stone mason’s, within their professional activity. It is therefore such as “mirandês” or Mirandela “Barranquenho”, a slang, typical in these parishes of the the municipality of Oliveira do Hospital.

Listen to some of these “Arguinas’s verbs”:

| guia de turismo ativo | oliveira do hospital-mergulhar/ the megalithic monuments route About 6,000 years ago, small human communities settled or passed through the area that is now known as the municipality of Oliveira do Hospital . Surrounded by nature they had a rudimentary agriculture. Their concern for life was to build dolmens or tapirs. These Megalithic monuments represented a memorial to the dead and the belief that symbolized eternity and rebirth. They are considered authentic temples where they worshiped the cult of a limited number of “Divine“ ancestors . / Megalithism: derives from the Greek mega = large and lithos = stone.

/ 1. Anta da Sobreda ou do Curral dos Mouros It stands on a knoll southeast of the village of Sobreda, amongst the outcrops and granites, near the Seia river. At the end of the XIX century it was possible to observe some red paintings on the inside of the mainstay bedside. Of the remains found, were about a thousand objects, one of the largest collections of artefacts available under the megaliths in the region. In 1959 it was classified as a monument of Public Interest. / gps: 40º 45’23.56” N / 07º 80’54.00” W/ 2. Anta de Arcaínha ou Dólmen do Seixo da Beira Has more than five thousand years and since 1959 is classified as a monument of Public Interest. It is also known as Casa da Moura or Lapa de Linhares. Considered one of the biggest monuments of its kind, still preserved in all the central / northern region of Portugal. / gps: 40º 44’51.88” N / 07º 84’43.27” W/ 3. Anta da Cavada - Fiais da Beira The 2008 restauration brought to light a mainstay of the hallway access and has been renamed as the ‘anta composta’; comprising thus of a burial chamber and a corridor access. It is situated about 3 km from Ervedal da Beira and is used as a shelter for the shepherds./ gps: 40º 41’66.04” N / 07º 92’05.39” W/ 4. Anta do Pinheiro dos Abraços - Bobadela Situated between Bobadela and Oliveira do Hospital, there is evidence that the plains of Bobadela were inhabited since prehistory. The estate itself consists of a collected wide range of archaeological artefacts. Since 1992, it’s classified as a monument of Public Interest./ gps: 40º 36’70.68” N / 07º 87’99.85” W

oliveira do hospital | guia de turismo ativo | relaxar-/ popular festivals and pilgrimages The religious traditions occupy a prominent place in the Borough of Oliveira do Hospital. The pilgrimage to the Chapel of Nossa Sen-hora das Preces, on the 1st. Sunday of July is proof of it. One of the biggest in the region of the Beiras. Summer, Lent and Easter attract most of the visitors.

Beyond the rituals of faith, there has been a concern to restore some economic activities and traditions. Examples of this, are the var-ious festivals and fairs that currently occur in the local parishes. Products such as cheese, chestnut, wine, livestock, bread and soup and events such as crafts, ethnography, folklore and anima-tion all go hand in hand.

oliveira do hospital | guia de turismo ativo | relaxar-/ copper and brass route The “Capital of Copper and Brass” is the title assumed by the locality of Catraia de São Paio in the parish of Oliveira do Hospital. There, one can visit the factories and see how the craftsmen work the copper out of the raw material (metal). You may purchase a wide variety of these copper pieces. Many of them are destined for exportation:… alembic pots, umbrella stands, pots, casseroles, trays, mugs, statues and other decorative pieces. You may not need a alembic pot, but a miniature is always nice as a souvenir. Many of these copper and brass pieces can be seen at the Dr. António Simões Saraiva Municipal MuseumIn the metalwork, we highlight the 70 year old craftsman António da Costa who still continues to keep alive the tradition and activity that he began in early childhood.
