Habit 1. Be Proactive✤ “Responsibility = response-ability”

✤ We have the ability to choose our response to life challenges.

✤ Proactive people don’t play the victim and do not place blame on others for their environment or circumstances.

✤ Reactive people are effected by other people and their environment

✤ Reactive people are effected by the weather whereas proactive people bring their own weather

Act or Be Acted Upon

✤ A lack of initiative has consequences just as initiative does.

✤ When we choose to not take initiative we choose the consequences that come along with that choice.

✤ When we act and take initiative we are being proactive. We are participating and are intentional about our consequences.

The Circle of Influence

Reactive or Proactive?

✤ Take a few moments and think about how EMS work is highly reactive.

✤ Reflect on how you can implement a proactive mindset at work.

✤ Anyone want to share their experience?

Page 10: The 7 Habits 7 Habits of HEP.pdfThe 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. We will use his writing to discuss and apply the concepts presented in his book to our EMS work environment

Test Your Proactivity

✤ Spend 24 hours paying careful attention to your language, your response to stressors, and where you spend your energy.

✤ In what areas are you proactive and reactive?

Page 11: The 7 Habits 7 Habits of HEP.pdfThe 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. We will use his writing to discuss and apply the concepts presented in his book to our EMS work environment

Habit 2. Begin with the End in Mind

✤ Imagine your funeral…what would you like to be said about you? How did you make people feel? What kind of friend, husband, mother, sister, daughter, co-worker were you? What were your contributions? Achievements? Who did you help along the way?

Page 12: The 7 Habits 7 Habits of HEP.pdfThe 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. We will use his writing to discuss and apply the concepts presented in his book to our EMS work environment

The Activity Trap

✤ Managing vs. leading your life and career

✤ When you become overwhelmed with tasks you begin to get caught up in the day to day.

✤ Is your success ladder leaning against the right wall?

Page 13: The 7 Habits 7 Habits of HEP.pdfThe 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. We will use his writing to discuss and apply the concepts presented in his book to our EMS work environment

A personal mission statement

✤ Do you have one?

✤ What would it say?

✤ Imagine you have 30 days left on earth. What would you do? What would be your focus? What would you say? What if you had to report to work. Would you do anything differently?

Page 14: The 7 Habits 7 Habits of HEP.pdfThe 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. We will use his writing to discuss and apply the concepts presented in his book to our EMS work environment

The Concept of Centeredness

✤ Many of us have behavioral patterns we fall into when we are stressed. These are the common centers people revert to. A principle center can balance all of these.

✤ Centers:

✤ Family

✤ Work

✤ Money

✤ Spouse

✤ Pleasure

✤ Church

✤ Self

✤ Possession

Page 15: The 7 Habits 7 Habits of HEP.pdfThe 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. We will use his writing to discuss and apply the concepts presented in his book to our EMS work environment

Habit 3: Put First Things First

✤ There is a common denominator with all successful people, they put first things first.

✤ They are willing to do the things those that fail are unwilling to do. They exercise discipline as a function of their values to get things done.

✤ Effective people are not problem minded, they’re opportunity minded.

✤ Effective time management and organizational skills.

Where Do You Spend Your Time?

Page 17: The 7 Habits 7 Habits of HEP.pdfThe 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. We will use his writing to discuss and apply the concepts presented in his book to our EMS work environment

The Time Management Matrix

✤ How to say no. Remember you’re always saying no to something

✤ How can you spend more time in QII?

✤ Most of our work in EMS is urgent. Or is it?

Page 18: The 7 Habits 7 Habits of HEP.pdfThe 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. We will use his writing to discuss and apply the concepts presented in his book to our EMS work environment

Interdependence✤ Delegation and interdependence is key to

effective relationships.

✤ How to cultivate interdependence:

✤ 1. Understanding the individual

✤ 2. Attending to the little things

✤ 3. Keeping commitments

✤ 4. Clarifying expectations

✤ 5. Showing personal integrity

✤ 6. Apologizing sincerely when making a withdrawal.

Page 19: The 7 Habits 7 Habits of HEP.pdfThe 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. We will use his writing to discuss and apply the concepts presented in his book to our EMS work environment

Habit 4: Think Win/Win✤ To think win/win you must have a mindset

focused around:

✤ Integrity

✤ Maturity, courage and consideration

✤ Abundance mentality

✤ What are the rewards/consequences for win/win?

✤ Financial

✤ Psychic

✤ Opportunity

✤ Responsibility

Page 20: The 7 Habits 7 Habits of HEP.pdfThe 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. We will use his writing to discuss and apply the concepts presented in his book to our EMS work environment

Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then Be Understood

✤ Do you know your staff?

✤ Is there trust?

✤ Define duplicity.

✤ Are you an empathetic listener?

✤ Anytime you are dealing with another person you have to consider that there are differences in perception. All of us have unique experiences. We have to be able to see the world through someone else’s lens.

Page 21: The 7 Habits 7 Habits of HEP.pdfThe 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. We will use his writing to discuss and apply the concepts presented in his book to our EMS work environment

How do you cultivate a high trust environment with your staff/peers?

✤ The more deeply you understand people the more you will appreciate them

Page 22: The 7 Habits 7 Habits of HEP.pdfThe 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. We will use his writing to discuss and apply the concepts presented in his book to our EMS work environment

Habit 6: Synergize

✤ The whole is greater than the sum of it’s parts.

✤ 1+1 =3

✤ True synergy offers mutual learning and respect, creativity, and what I like to call magic.

✤ Have ever experienced true synergy? What are some examples?

Page 23: The 7 Habits 7 Habits of HEP.pdfThe 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. We will use his writing to discuss and apply the concepts presented in his book to our EMS work environment

The Mindset Behind Synergy

✤ To come together and synergize with others you must have an abundance mindset.

✤ Many people have been scripted or trained into a scarcity mindset, believing that other people cannot be trusted.

✤ When people are unable to collaborate synergy doesn’t happen. Much potential remains untapped.

Page 24: The 7 Habits 7 Habits of HEP.pdfThe 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. We will use his writing to discuss and apply the concepts presented in his book to our EMS work environment

Negative Synergy

✤ What is negative synergy?

✤ Have you experienced this in your work environment?

✤ The byproducts of negative synergy:

✤ shared ignorance

✤ competition

✤ adversity to change

✤ shared biases and mindsets

Page 25: The 7 Habits 7 Habits of HEP.pdfThe 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. We will use his writing to discuss and apply the concepts presented in his book to our EMS work environment

Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw

✤ How are we about sharpening our saw in EMS?

✤ Does sharpening your saw require some of the other habits?

✤ How do you sharpen your saw?
