The 4th Industrial Revolution brings new challenges—using big data analytics, real-time acquisition and digital continuity from ideation to design to production and even ownership. Our panel of industry experts looks at the impacts for industrial equipment—dangers, opportunities and how to have it work for your advantage. Here are some highlights.

IF THE 4TH INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTIONIS A GAME CHANGER
WE NEED TO PLAYBY NEW RULES
CONNECT EVERYTHING“I think we’re in the midst of an incredible change to everything we know. What we call it is less relevant. What’s relevant is that there are connections between people and products and places and processes and machines that we’ve never had to engage with in the history of humankind.”
CONNECTING WHAT’S POSSIBLE“So for me I think the watch words of this whole revolution is connectivity and seeing connections between things that weren’t previously connected. But we’re still using non-connected mindsets, so we’re still going well I’m going to own this particular system of way of measuring, rather than going hold on a minute, there’s a much bigger pie here I can be part of.”
OVERCOME CONNECTION BARRIERS“Something that’s a very interesting challenge for leaders is not to use industrial thinking all of the time when engaging with this revolution, because it’s not going to work.”
KNOW YOUR THREATS“Definitely the biggest threat for an industrial equipment manufacturer are other industrial equipment manufacturers.”
KNOW YOUR CUSTOMER“It definitely won’t be enough just to produce best engineered and world class products.I think that a major success factor will be to produce actually what the customers want and what the value for customers will increase. So increasing customer experience will be actually a major success factor.”
UNDERSTAND HOW TO USE TECHNOLOGY“There definitely will be companies who are not market leaders yet but they are very dangerous because they have understood to use technology like IOT, robotics and cognitive solution or augmented realities. They will be competitors who have understood how to combine these new technologies to basically offer new stuff and they will soon become market leaders.”
DISRUPTION“Major disrupters in fields tend to come from left field, tend to come from out of nowhere, from a completely different market altogether.”
WHAT ABOUT BIG DATA“The amount of data that’s actually produced in this world is huge. And the blind spot obviously is people don’t know what to do with it… actually that’s not a bad thing to admit; it’s a very healthy thing to admit.”
BRIDGE THE GAP“We have seen this idea of the chief digital officer coming in at certain companies. Bridging the gap between information officers and marketing officers and having an overview of the company that they can’t have.”
HAVE A GAME PLAN“The latest numbers we have are only 10% of the industry players are having a game plan or are starting their game. So we’re this massive group of 90% which still has a lot of work to do. ”
NOT ONE, BUT ALL“It’s a company initiative and you have to have everyone around the table before you even start instead of bringing them on later when things have moved on already. It’s really a company-wide thing and if you don’t do that, you will fail.”
LEADERSHIP“Everybody is involved. The CEO or the COO from the company should lead this program or project, not the IT function.”
TRANSFORMATION“We are talking about a company-wide transformation which includes digital technology, new tools, but also you have to think about your culture, your people your leadership your insight your structure your organization, all this needs to be part of your master plan otherwise you will not get the full benefits.”
