KNO students’ „musts”To finish studies one had to:

pass all exams create new distance learning course in the subject of one’s

speciality

Assumption: course consists of a selection of modules and takes at least 15 hours, methodical help book in electronic and paper versions had to be included

pass final exam (related to public presentation of one’s course)

Human resources - advantages qualified teachers with experience in composing

materials representing didactically high level

The 4th IFIP AGORA Seminar, Cracow, May 4-6, 2008

10

Human resources - disadvantages

demanding, difficult in negotiations; not flexible, not willing to change habits; representing diverse subjects; some fluent in ITC, others novices.

The 4th IFIP AGORA Seminar, Cracow, May 4-6, 2008

11

Problemswere caused mostly by lack of time (extremely short time in

logistic point of view: 3 semesters in less than 10 months)

Organization Sharing information Communicating requirements Discipline

The 4th IFIP AGORA Seminar, Cracow, May 4-6, 2008

12

Achievements good quality courses; emphasis put on use of wide range of

ICT tools to produce contemporary, interesting and “professional-like” materials as an obvious proof of success of such idea of postgraduate studies

examples

The 4th IFIP AGORA Seminar, Cracow, May 4-6, 2008

13

Benefits

University staff: exhausting but fruitful experience new skills challenge for all assured of a strong need of distance learning in region

Students: new skills, abilities; enormous, rapid „jump” for many; meeting other teachers representing diversity of educational

institutions, vivid discussions, brain-storms, cooperation (should not be underestimated – eg. testing and

evaluating courses of one another before public presentation)

The 4th IFIP AGORA Seminar, Cracow, May 4-6, 2008

14

Some remarksNecessary conditions for successful e-learning course (hybrid model): Qualified staff (having much time and strong will to encourage students

for new challanges) Room and equipment for students (auditory, computer laboratories

connected to Internet and with multimedia projectors) Others: Transparency Criticism

The 4th IFIP AGORA Seminar, Cracow, May 4-6, 2008

15

Into a future Platform to maintain teachers’ courses is being prepared.

Need for a long-term vision of ICT developement for teachers! Nowadays, chaotic and accidental. No standards for continuation of training.

No guaranty to repeat release of postgraduate studies.

The 4th IFIP AGORA Seminar, Cracow, May 4-6, 2008

16

Summary (KNO) Although there is a lot room for

improvement (!) the achievements of KNO are clear and obvious

Postgraduate studies for teachers in teaching Computer Science and Information and Communication Technology

Part of Postgraduate studies for teachers in teaching second subject organized by Nicolaus Copernicus University

ca 1000 students recruited from kujawsko-pomorskie voivodship 60 students on Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science 460 hours in 3 semesters (in less than 10 months)

E-learning played marginal role in this project since at most only 20% of total amount of time could be organized as distance learning. Still:

Organizers were strongly encouraged to offer Internet discussion fora
