The Pinnacle
November 2011
Are you ready to
journey with a
village in
Central
America?
We are excited to announce that the PCJH Elders have approved a seven-year partnership with Agros
International‟s “Journey with a Village” program! The Mission Committee and Vision Team would
like to thank all of you for your prayers of discernment during this year-long process. We believe
God will bless the village and PCJH as we join hands and journey together with Jesus.
What are the next steps?
We will work with Agros to identify and commit to a specific village in Central America.
We will have a special ceremony at PCJH to mark the beginning of our relationship with this vil-
lage.
We will form a special committee who will oversee our relationship and activity with Agros. If
you are interested in being a part of this committee, please contact Bob Kopp or Pastor Ben.
We will begin planning our first service team trip for Spring 2012. All interested participants will
need to fill out an application. We will also have partial scholarships available for those who
need assistance.
If you are interested in learning more about how you can get involved with “Journey with a Village”
please contact Bob Kopp ([email protected]) or Pastor Ben ([email protected]).
To God be the Glory!
Happily reunited, Ben Hamin, shown here with his family, remembered
Ben & Addi Pascal. Pastor Ben had visited and worked with this Guate-
malan villager during a prior Agros trip five years ago.
Howdy Everyone.
I am thrilled to be writing to you all at the conclu-
sion of what has been a magnificent fall. The colors have
been incredible and have hung around far longer than
usual. There have been a number of times I have pulled
out my camera and taken pictures to remind me of the
beauty during those less colorful months of winter.
November is Thanksgiving month. We have so
much for which to be thankful. Our breath, our life, our
community, the relative stability of our nation when so
many nations have great instability, our medical availabil-
ity, our family, friends, faith, and the list could go on.
Making a gratitude list for all things great or small is a
wonderful way to not forget the many blessings we have.
To this spirit and season of Thanksgiving I want to
contrast the “Occupy Wall Street” movement. I am sure
most if not all of you are aware of the protests that have
gone on for more than a month and have now spread across
the nation and to other parts of the world. These protests
focus on policies, procedures, and bail-outs that hurt the
common person and financial rewards for a few to the ex-
clusion of people in need. These protests are attempting to
confront moral and ethical wrongs that have injured many.
Their true focus is greed: a spiritual disease that can be
seen in the hearts of some with wealth; greed: a spiritual
disease that is also rooted in the hearts of some of the „less-
rich‟ when they want more (especially taken from others so
the „less-rich‟ don‟t have to work for it).
I am reminded of what St. Paul wrote to his mentee
Timothy about this matter. He said:
But those who want to be rich fall into temptation and are
trapped by many senseless and harmful desires that plunge
people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a
root of all kinds of evil, and in their eagerness to be rich
some have wandered away from the faith and pierced them-
selves with many pains.
1 Timothy 6:9-10
Greed, the consuming desire for more, can be the
focus of those with substance and those who want more
substance. In many ways I believe the “Occupy” move-
ment has not gone far enough. I believe it should be ex-
panded to include Hollywood where our movie tickets
pay millions of dollars to actors and producers that often
present an immoral message to the people of America as
well as to our world; Professional athletes where top
players are paid millions to swing a bat, throw a ball,
shoot a basket, or fling a puck; I know the list could go
on.
One of the signs that greed exists in our soul is
when thanksgiving does not regularly flow from our
heart. Thanksgiving should be a central characteristic of
our faith. Jesus challenged his disciples to rejoice (be
thankful) for the greater things. After they had returned
from a very successful missionary venture where they
had been the vessels to defeat the demonic in people,
Jesus told them in Luke 10:20:
…do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you (the wrong
focus,i.e., power, influence, etc.,… add your own descrip-
tors - peh), but rejoice that your names are written in
heaven.
St. Paul admonished those Christians in Thessalonica in
this way (1 Thss. 5:16-18):
Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all cir-
cumstances for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
I am convinced that the proper antidote for greed
in our souls is not through the reducing or transferring
of income. The antidote for greed is the development of
an attitude of gratitude rooted in what God has done for
us in Jesus Christ our Lord.
My prayer for us this month is that the God of
grace will “Occupy” our hearts through the inner work-
ing of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
“Occupied” with you,
Pastor Paul
Dear PCJH Family,
Thanksgiving… it is not a religious holi-day, but being thankful is at the heart of the Christian faith. We celebrate communion (or Eucharist) once a month. The Greek word for Eucharist means thanksgiving. May we all give thanks to our Savior and Lord Jesus Christ. He is the one who came to reconcile us back to God, to redeem that which has been lost, and to restore the brokenness of our world.
Rejoice in the Lord always, I will say it again: Rejoice! Do not be anxious about any-thing, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which tran-scends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. ~ Philippians 4:4,6-7 Great Lasagna Mission
As a way of expressing our thanks to God and blessing our community, we will be doing the Great Lasagna Mission again this year on Sunday night, November 13
th from
5:30pm to 7:30pm. The purpose of the Great Lasagna Mission is to create an opportunity for families to serve our community together as a family unit and as a church. It is impor-tant for our children to see their parents serve and to serve as a family.
We will gather in the Fellowship Hall at
5:30pm and make as many lasagnas as pos-sible (last year we made 73… let’s see if we can beat that number this year!) Next, we will eat lasagna together around tables and enjoy fellowship and conversation with one another. Then, we will take lasagnas to people in our community who need some encouragement and love. We need as many people as possi-ble to help with this service project (prepping, cooking, building and delivering lasagnas… and cleaning up). We also need names and addresses of people to deliver the lasagnas to.
Please contact our intern, Allison Stewart, if you are interested in helping with this great ministry opportunity ([email protected]). Safe Church Policy
It is important for our church to be a safe place where children, youth and families can gather to love God, grow to know and follow Je-sus, and go out into the world to make a differ-ence. I believe PCJH is a safe church. However, there is a committee who is de-veloping a more comprehensive policy in order to ensure that PCJH remains a safe place for our children, youth and families. It is widely known that crimes of abuse have occurred in churches across our country and world. It is an unfortunate reality of the world we live in. At PCJH we take the safety of our children, youth and families seriously. We believe in pro-viding a safe and nurturing environment for our children to know the love of God in Jesus Christ. In order to ensure this, we have strength-ened our current policy to include a more thorough screening process for all staff, elders, deacons, and volunteers who work directly with children and youth. We have also clearly defined basic guide-lines and processes our church will abide by in order to ensure the safety of our kids. These are all things we have already been doing, but now they will be updated and strengthened in our new policy. A new component to our Safe Church Pol-icy will be required training and education for all staff, elders, deacons and CYF volunteers. We will officially implement this new policy in January 2012 upon the approval of Session. As a parent of a young child, I am proud and thankful that our church takes the safety and well-being of our children so seriously. I believe Jesus would do the same.
Faithfully, ~Pastor Ben

Thanksgiving Placemats
Soon we will be decorating and delivering placemats for the Thanksgiving Day Feast!
This is the third year we have had kids around the community decorate and deliver placemats to: Meals on Wheels recipients, Pioneer Home-stead Residents, The Living Center, River Rock,
The Good Samaritan Mission, The Food Cup-board as well as The Teton Steakhouse. This is
a great outreach of service to our community and this event brought great joy to those who
received and gave placemats last year. We encourage parents to participate together with
their children. We will be delivering the placemats beginning Nov. 16th.

Join us on Sunday, Nov. 13th and bring your family or invite a friend! This is a
popular community service opportunity to make and deliver lasagnas for someone
in need. You will get to dine on a fine lasagna dinner together in fellowship with family and friends. This is a great chance to serve and go into the world to make a difference with your children! Please call Allison Stewart if you will be attending.

The Great Lasagna Mission
~As parents, we worry about how our kids are doing in school. We attend all the back to school curriculum nights, contribute to the PTA and more. We worry that they will be well rounded. So, we sign them up for different sports, clubs and after school activities. We worry that they will be healthy, so we spend time planning their meals, and encouraging them to eat healthy snacks. But do we worry about the most important thing? Are our chil-dren growing in a relationship with Jesus Christ? Before you start to feel guilty because you are not doing enough or are overwhelmed by the idea of needing to do something else, let me say if you are reading this you are on the right track because you are getting your family involved in a church community. But is that enough in today’s world? Sunday School is only one hour a week. What about the other 167 hours in the week? Who is guiding your child to Christ then? You are your child’s primary teacher. You may say, “I am not that con-fident in my knowledge of the Bible.” I say teaching is one of the best ways to improve your understanding. You may say, “I don’t have time.” You don’t need a lot of time, you just need to be intentional about the conversations you have. ~ Please let me know if you would like to get involved in your child’s Christian education. We would
love to have you join us in this important work of Partnering Home and Congregation! Cindy Zabriskie

Ps. 139:14. Our teachers have been teaching us how much
God loves each and every one of us and that we are all made
differently, but wonderfully! It’s getting cold out and we experi-
enced our first snow of the season! But, the snow didn’t stop us
from finding beautiful fall leaves and making place mats out of

How Raising Children Shapes our Souls

Begins Oct. 30
“Parenting is a school for spiritual formation – and our children are our teachers.” Gary Thomas (same
author of Sacred Marriage)
Join us for a 6 session video group study, facilitated by Pastor Ben, where author Gary Thomas shows
how God can transform lessons in raising children into opportunities to grow in the image of Christ.
This is not a “how to” class that teaches you ways to discipline your kids or help them achieve their full
potential. Instead of discussing how parents can change their kids, Sacred Parenting turns the tables and
demonstrates how God uses our kids to change us. It will help you and the group look at parenting from
a different perspective.
This class is not only for parents, but also for grandparents and other parent-like figures.
Sacred Parenting will be offered on Wednesdays at 5:15pm (beginning Oct. 26th) and Sundays at 9:00am
(beginning Oct. 30th). No classes will be held Thanksgiving week (Nov 23rd or 27th). There is a $10 fee
for the participant guide, which will be provided at the class.

Second Thursdays Mission Meals
Each month, a team of dedicated volunteers prepare a meal for
the approximately 25 to 30 people who are homeless and per-
haps living at or visiting the Good Samaritan Mission on Pearl
Street in Jackson. Volunteers commit to providing one of the
following five foods: Main course, vegetable, starch, salad or
dessert. They then deliver their prepared food to the GSM by 5
pm on the second Thursday of each month. Those who have
the time are welcome to stay and help serve the meal. GSM
staff and volunteers provide the clean up. This has been one of
the quiet missions of PCJH for nearly a decade. To learn more,
and to sign up to help, contact Susan Ordway at 739-2120 or at
her e-mail address, [email protected].
Live It Learn It
Cards are available at the welcome table outside the sanctuary.
If you are still seeking a way to be involved in the life of the
church, please fill one out and place it in the offering basket or
in the church office. We will contact you in response to your
expressed interest. Blessings, the PCJH staff and volunteer
team leaders.
Every Sunday is Name Tag Sunday
The Congregational Life Team is interested in inviting every-
one to wear a name tag. This important activity helps us be-
come a more welcoming church, by helping our visitors get to
know us by name, and so we will be better able to reach out to
others who are new in the life of our congregation. If you are
interested in learning more about our Ministry of Welcoming,
contact Cindy Dahlin, [email protected] or Becky
Kimmel, [email protected].

PCJH LIBRARY NEWS Now that the weather is changing, you may have a little more spare time for reading!! The PCJH library will provide
you with a variety of wonderful books, old and new. Please stop by and find a Christian novel, an inspirational book
on prayer, or perhaps a bible study you can do at home or with a small group. Here are a few ideas for Fall read-
ing/study:
1) A Deeper Joy: Add a New Dimension to Your Life – by Colleen T Evans – the author says about her
book….”I chose to write about the Beatitudes because in these words Jesus was speaking to believers
like me – they weren’t very pious and they were far from perfect, but they had decided for Jesus. Now
they needed His help in trying to live the life to which He had called them.”
2) The Prodigal God: Recovering the Heart of the Christian Faith: by Timothy Keller – by the time this news-
letter goes to press, Pen Pascal’s Sunday School class on this book will be coming to a close. This book
is a MUST READ if you missed Ben’s class! The renowned NYC minister “uses one of the best known
parables to reveal an unexpected message of hope and salvation….this book will challenge both the de-
vout and the skeptic to see Christianity in a whole new way”!!!
3) Walking by Faith: Lessons Learned in the Dark: by Jennifer Rothschild - (Individual or group bible study –
6 weeks, includes DVDs). This study “contrasts the evidences of walking by faith and walking by sight
and encourages us to take risks, give God control, persevere through hardships………”

ANNUAL PLEDGE SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 13TH
Sunday, November 13th will be our Annual Pledge Sunday. Each of us can participate with fellow wor-
shippers to dedicate our combined pledges for God‟s work of ministry and mission through the Presbyte-
rian Church of Jackson Hole in 2012.
The Annual Fund of the Church is used to pay for worship services, Christian education (children, youth
and adults), mission outreach projects, staff salaries, building heating, lighting, cleaning and similar day-to
-day costs.
Our collective pledges will be used by the Board of Elders, Finance Team and Stewardship Team to de-
velop the PCJH budget for 2012. Understanding the level of financial commitment for the coming year is
helpful to that planning process.
PCJH‟s overall mission is to “Pass on the Faith.” To achieve that objective our Church offers a wide vari-
ety of ministry and mission (outreach) projects, such as three weekly worship services, community dinners
on Wednesday evening, ongoing adult Bible studies, children‟s Sunday school, Little Lambs pre-school,
Upward Basketball, Joy University in the summer, and the recently approved Agros International mission
program to name but a few. Each of these high-impact programs change the lives of those that participate.
All members and friends of our congregation will soon receive a letter that includes a Pledge Card for our
PCJH Annual Fund Campaign. Please read the letter, as well as the accompanying piece, “Frequently
Asked Questions”. Pray for guidance and then complete your pledge for 2012 using a percentage figure or
a specific dollar amount.
If you are unable to pledge a percentage or specific dollar amount at this time, the Pledge Card also pro-
vides a space for you to indicate that fact and state that you will give as you are able.
Our goal this year is 100% participation by the congregation. We continue to be blessed by the gifts God
has given us. We also know that the Scriptures call for each of us to return a portion of those gifts to sup-
port God‟s work. We ask that you please prayerfully consider what God is calling you to contribute to His
work through the Presbyterian Church of Jackson Hole.
Please bring your completed Pledge Card with you to worship on Sunday, November 13th. If you cannot
be present on the 13th, please mail your Pledge Card to the Church (P.O. Box 7530, Jackson, WY 83002)
or drop it off at the Church office.
All submissions will be treated confidentially.

STEWARDSHIP
Thank You PCJH !!
In these times of so much need, and so many places to think of when we consider sharing our talents
and treasure, the Mission Team is so pleased to thank you all for your generous donations to the Spe-
cial Peacemaking Offering received on October 10. Our total is $700.00. We are invited by PC (USA)
to keep 25% of that total for use in our own communities; The Mission Team has decided to send the
gift to “The Good Samaritan Mission”.
One of four special annual offerings of The Presbyterian Church (USA), and received during World
Communion Sunday, an additional 25% will be used to support Presbytery and Synod peacemaking,
and 50% will be forwarded to the Presbyterian Peacemaking Program of the General Assembly (the
national level of PC(USA) for their work.
Thank you, again! Your generosity is very much appreciated – especially in this time of so much need
at home and abroad!

the complete video of her interview. A
portion of the transcript below:
Intro by Dr. Oz: Dr. Mary Neal is a surgeon who was skeptical of near death experiences, until she drowned
while on vacation:
"Our last day, we all got in our boats and started paddling down the river...as I crested the drop, I thought,
I'm in trouble. I was immediately engulfed by the water falls. My boat was pinned between rocks and noth-
ing I was going to do was going to make a difference. At that point, I relaxed and gave my life to God's will
and I was enveloped with this very physical sensation of being held and comforted and reassured... and I
thought about my husband and my children and I was assured that they would be fine...Finally, my body
broke loose from the boat. I was free and my spirit was free from my body and then I was above the river
and I was immediately greeted by 10 or 12 spirits. I knew that they had come to guide me back on our jour-
ney back to God. I was simultaneously with them - yet at the same time was able to see that (my river travel
companions) had pulled me back to the river bank and had started CPR, asking me to please come back...I
would go back to my body and take a breath and then rejoin these other spirits that were guiding me. We
were moving towards this great hall, there was jubilation and I was going home. Then there was sadness.
They told me it wasn't my time to die, I still had work to do on earth and that I had to return to my body. I
had Faith....but now I have knowledge."
