One of the great pleasures of this year has been the opportunity to work so closely with so many members of this community: students, teachers, parents, alumni, community

leaders, and a highly engaged Board of Trustees to chart a new course for Seven Hills. The Strategic Plan of 2013 is a truly inspiring vision for the future of this institution.

The plan is grounded in two realities: 1. In this era of economic uncertainty, institutions like Seven Hills face significant financial challenges.2. Given the pace of change in the global community, our graduates, now more than ever, are facing a much more competitive world.

Accordingly, the Strategic Plan of 2013 calls for several initiatives designed to address these challenges. It calls for: • Restoring the Lower School to full enrollment, sustaining full enrollment in Middle School, and modestly increasing

enrollment in the Upper School while maintaining traditional class sizes.• Sustaining the excellence of the faculty and staff.• Accelerating the curricular emphasis on project-based learning.• Fostering real world learning by strengthening career exploration, service learning, and leadership opportunities.• Nurturing individual talents by:

-- Developing a signature program to guide students toward opportunities to specialize, both at school and beyond.-- Enhancing opportunities in the fine and performing arts, and athletics.

• Addressing significant facilities issues in areas where our programmatic aspirations are constrained by current facilities.

From a program standpoint, we envisage focusing, even more intentionally, on teaching methods that foster the future-focused skills our students will need to thrive in the global economy: critical thinking, creativity and innovation, and collaboration. This involves an even greater focus on project-based learning, more opportunities for students to work in project teams on sustained, real world problems, gathering data, developing and testing solutions, and presenting their findings to authentic audiences.

It also means a deeper commitment to supporting “real world learning” beyond the boundaries of the school day or the academic calendar. We hope to develop a signature program to promote meaningful engagement beyond Seven Hills, involving students in career exploration, internships, community involvement and service learning, leadership training, and entrepreneurial opportunities. The goal will be to help students identify and foster individual interests and talents to guide them toward opportunities to specialize, both here at school and through involvement in community service, Personal Challenge projects, online courses, flexible credit and summer study, and travel opportunities.

If this is not ambitious enough, we are also contemplating a major investment in four facilities which, we believe, not only limit what we want to do programmatically, but also adversely impact the marketability of Seven Hills in this very competitive local landscape.

It is daunting, of course, to contemplate all we want to accomplish over the next few years, but it is also deeply gratifying to be part of a community so passionately committed to continuous improvement. Thank you for all you continue to do to help move Seven Hills forward.

Christopher P. Garten Head of School

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, it is a pleasure to thank the entire Seven Hills community for all you have done to support the School during the past academic year.

By any measure, 2012-2013 has been a terrific success. We continue to enjoy healthy enrollment; the 2013-2014 school year opened with 1,020 students, an increase of more than 60 students in the last three years, and we are particularly gratified by a substantial influx of new students in grades seven and nine. The 2012-2013 school year also saw the successful launch of two new programs for younger students, the Beginnings program for children 18 to 36 months, and Pre-Kindergarten for two-year-olds, which opened this school year on the Doherty campus.

Thanks in large measure to the success of the Critical Assets Campaign, which concluded in 2011, Seven Hills continues to have the resources to compete aggressively in the national marketplace to attract and retain the superb teaching faculty that has long been a hallmark of the School. The energy and commitment of the faculty have led to a number of academic innovations this past year: the adoption of an iPad program in grades six through twelve, which has made possible a greater emphasis on inquiry-based learning, research, and problem solving; the addition of Chinese language instruction beginning in grade nine; the development of two new engineering courses for juniors and seniors, in response to a huge surge in interest in the hard sciences; and, of course, the introduction of a new academic schedule which will reduce some of the frenzy of daily life and permit more extended classroom investigations.

In the midst of all this activity, the Board has been engaged in an ambitious strategic planning process. With great leadership from Beth Schiff and Shannon Carter, and the enthusiastic participation of more than 100 volunteers, the Steering Committee has developed a very compelling vision for the future that will move Seven Hills forward in three significant ways. The Strategic Plan of 2013 addresses ongoing enrollment challenges that Seven Hills faces because of some demographic shifts in our community. It also outlines some ambitious program initiatives to prepare our students even more fully for the increasingly competitive landscape in both college admissions and the job market. Finally, it addresses some critical facilities needs in areas where our programmatic objectives are curtailed by our current facilities. At our final meeting in May, the Board of Trustees enthusiastically adopted the strategic plan. We look forward to working alongside the entire school community to bring the plan to fruition in the coming years.

Again, let me thank you for all you have done to support the School this past year. Our family has just concluded our 19th consecutive year at Seven Hills. Thanks to the loyal and unwavering support of the entire community, “our” school feels stronger than ever!

As part of our strategic planning process, a committee of trustees and senior administrators revised Seven Hills’ mission statement and developed a new Statement of Educational Philosophy. Together, the new Seven Hills Mission Statement and Statement of Educational Philosophy,

unanimously adopted by the full Board of Trustees, constitutes a powerful expression of the defining purpose of this institution. The Statement of Educational Philosophy was written to articulate how the mission is to be accomplished. It consolidates the work the faculty did a couple of years ago within their academic departments. At that time, each department defined the methods they used to help accomplish

the educational objectives articulated in the Portrait of a Seven Hills Graduate.

We invited several current students and alumni to share thoughts about the ways

aspects of The Seven Hills School Statement of Educational Philosophy are playing out in their educational experience at Seven Hills.

We are highlighting their thoughts throughout

this 2012-2013 Annual Report and are grateful for their thoughtful contributions.

Our Approach to Teaching• We believe that learning should be

engaging and relevant.

• We use teaching methods designed to ensure that students acquire the intellectual and social skills they need to thrive in an increasingly complex global community.

• We focus not only on the acquisition of knowledge, but on inquiry, discovery, and the application of skills to meaningful problem solving.

• We teach students to make choices, to manage their time, to think critically and creatively, and, above all, to take responsibility for their own learning.

• We are committed to exploring educational best practices and to adapting our instructional methods to advances in technology and developments in the world.

Our Commitment to Character•WebelievethattheSchool,in

partnership with our families, plays a critical role in helping students develop character and core values.

•Westrivetonurturetheintellec-tual, aesthetic, moral, and social skills our students will need to become engaged citizens and responsible leaders.

•Weseeourteachers, administrators, and staff as role models, mentors, and collaborators, engaging with students in meaningful and mutually respectful ways.

•Wevalueindividualityandbelievethat a rich diversity of backgrounds and perspectives enriches our community.

•Weencouragestudentsandfaculty to be actively involved in their communities, making us all more aware of the needs of others.

Our Environment for Learning• We believe that students learn best

when they work in an atmosphere of open inquiry and mutual respect.

• We believe that the School should provide a safe, supportive, and challenging environment, with clear goals and high expectations for student achievement and conduct.

• We believe that education is relationship-based and that students learn best when teachers fully understand the interests, motiva-tions, and individual learning styles of each of their students.

• We believe that the School should provide the widest possible range of opportunities for students to explore personal interests and develop individual talents.

• We believe that extracurricular and athletic activities should be open to all students who wish to participate, regardless of their innate ability.

The Business Office of The Seven Hills School is responsible for the preparation, integrity and fair presentation of the financial statements and other accounting information in this annual report.

The School maintains a system of internal controls over financial reporting, which is designed to provide assurance to the School’s management and Board of Trustees that assets are protected and that transactions and events are recorded properly in the financial statements.

The Board of Trustees, through the Finance Committee, comprised of trustees not employed by the School, has adopted an Audit Subcommittee that includes engaging an independent accounting firm, Mellott & Mellott, P.L.L., to ensure that the financial statements are accurately presented.

The School has again maintained a balanced budget for the Fiscal Year ending June 30, 2013. In the strategic effort to maintain the affordability of the School, the administration, faculty and staff continue to find ways to reduce costs while persisting to prioritize teaching and learning.

Schoolwide operating efficiencies have been gained by increasing energy conservation, pruning unnecessary administrative positions, rethinking student-faculty ratios and removing under-enrolled programs.

The overall financial health of the School was again aided by the growth of the endowment, which provides funding for teacher salaries, financial aid, faculty professional development and distinctive programming and technology.

Both annual giving and capital gifts enrich every part of the School. Most importantly, these gifts bridge the gap between tuition and the full cost of educating each child.

The Seven Hi l ls Fund

$607,386

During the 2012-2013 fiscal year, more than 1,600 donors joined together to contribute

$1,202,701 to our annual giving program, The Seven Hills Fund, surpassing our goal of

$1,090,000 by $112,701. We sincerely thank you!

We are deeply grateful for your investments in The Seven Hills School’s tradition of excellence.

Your support enables us to continue to provide the rich educational experiences to which all of

us in the School community are committed. The Seven Hills Fund resources are earmarked for

items used by students every day—ranging from maps to microscopes, arts supplies to sports equip-

ment—readying them for the exciting and complex world that awaits them beyond these walls.

Individual gifts to The Seven Hills Fund have a direct impact on and connection to the operating

budget at the School. Tuition covers about 80% of the annual cost of educating each child at

the School. The remaining 20% comes from the School’s endowment, grants and, very significantly,

The Seven Hills Fund. Gifts to the Fund ensure that the necessary resources are available to

make Seven Hills such a great school and community.

We extend a special ‘thank you’ to trustee and Development Chair Jennifer Stein, and the more

than 100 volunteers who not only made their own generous gifts, but also spent countless hours

reaching out to encourage the rest of the Seven Hills community to support The Seven Hills Fund.

Ultimately, the greatest gift we can give our children is to surround them with the teachers,

peers and resources that will nurture their potential. Annual gifts to The Seven Hills Fund make

that possible.

Thank you for helping to enrich our students’ education every day!

Note: Donors who fall into more than one group are tallied in only one category according to the order of priority shown above.

What sets Seven Hills apart • • •

our meaningful difference • • •

is how we teach rather than what we teach, as reflected in the Statement of Educational Philosophy. Our students learn to be explorers, problem solvers and collaborators.

“Seven Hills has a truly profound aura of respect which includes both students and teachers, creating an ideal learning

environment. In seventh grade, I was in math club alongside more mathematically advanced eighth grade boys, and I still felt at home enough to attempt to answer the questions and not be afraid of getting them wrong. Seven Hills is the sort of place where you can grow and learn from your mistakes instead of

worrying about them.”

“Seven Hills has combined passion and intellect in a way that makes our learning experience complete. From literature discus-

sions to lab practicals, I have developed a powerful ability to problem solve. The best things about Seven Hills are the teachers.

They provide an incredible opportunity for students not only to participate in class but also to learn in a variety of different ways.

In school, I’m not just learning to memorize; I’m learning to understand. It has been a very meaningful experience for me to

have been a part of the Seven Hills community.”

“In every class I’ve taken in the two years I’ve attended Seven Hills, I’ve been very nearly in awe of the respect that the students have for each other and the teachers, as well as the respect the teachers have for the students. This respect makes the Seven Hills environment not only conducive to learning, but it welcomes and encourages it with open arms. This mutual respect creates a place where kids aren’t afraid of being laughed at for wanting to learn, a place that makes everything at Seven Hills possible.”

Thanks to generous support

from the Senior Parents and the

Class of 2013, an area of the

Hillsdale Campus, adjacent to

the deck and courtyard between

the corner of the Kalnow Gym

and the Middle School, has been

beautifully landscaped to create

The Class of 2013 Sitting Area.

The addition of new plantings,

paver stones and seating makes

this a pleasant place for study-

ing, eating lunch or relaxing with

friends. The Class of 2013 Sitting

Area is a lasting legacy to honor

the Class of 2013 and their days

at Seven Hills.

Our students become active participants in the

world communitythrough informed use of the latest technology and their drive for meaningful engagement with global issues and the peoples of the world.

WE I NVITED STUDENTS TO REFLECT ON HOW SEVEN HILLS HELPS TO DEVELOP INFORMED

GLOBAL CITIZENS.

“One aspect of Seven Hills that I’ve always admired is how it never shies away from teaching something because it is

considered too complex or controversial. From celebrating the study of ‘banned books’ to creating political discourse in

Roundtable Discussions to having an entire day devoted to addressing the effects of global poverty, Seven Hills teaches us

to view the world with an open mind and that ignoring a problem will never lead to a solution.”

C L A S S O F 2 0 1 1

Gabe Blanco

“Seven Hills has a truly profound aura of respect which includes both students and teachers, creating an ideal learning

environment. In seventh grade, I was in math club alongside more mathematically advanced eighth grade boys, and I still felt at home enough to attempt to answer the questions and not be afraid of getting them wrong. Seven Hills is the sort of place where you can grow and learn from your mistakes instead of

worrying about them.”

“In the global workplace, much communication takes place through short emails or quick conference calls. I feel prepared to enter the fast-paced, digital arena because, at Seven Hills,

I learned to express my point of view clearly and concisely. Beginning freshmen year, my history teacher placed strict word limits on my Ancient and Medieval essays, and my

journalism instructor discussed briefer alternatives to wordy sentences in my articles. Ending senior year, I learned to read

and analyze a literary passage, then write and edit an AP English essay in one bell.”

C L A S S O F 2 0 1 3

Sara Johnson

“Looking back on my time at Seven Hills, I have come to realize that the teachers often focused on the methods we could apply to approach a particular question or problem rather than on memorizing facts or algorithms. This teaching style drove my classmates and me to become more intelligent students instead of just smarter students. The skills I was able to hone while at Seven Hills have enabled me to succeed in rigorous coursework and in work outside of the classroom that draws on many different skill sets and knowledge bases.”

C L A S S O F 2 0 1 0

Josh Wang

“In my experience, Seven Hills is committed to carrying out its educational philosophy, especially in tailoring methods of teaching to the latest technologies and global trends. Seven Hills is great at not only bringing the newest technologies into the classroom but also at finding creative and useful applications for them. The iPad has become an integral part of many of my classes and definitely has improved the quality of them, as the Internet and a vast array of educational apps are at my fingertips.”

“WE FOCUS NOT ONLY ON THE ACQUISIT ION OF KNOWLEDGE, BUT ON INQUIRY, DISCOVERY, AND THE APPL ICATION OF SKILLS TO MEANINGFUL PROBLEM SOLVING.” “WE BEL IEVE THAT STUDENTS LEARN BEST WHEN THEY WORK IN AN ATMOSPHERE OF OPEN INQUIRY AND MUTUAL RESPECT.”

When asked why she supports

The Seven Hills Fund, Liza

Martindale Weiner ’99 said,

“From the teachers who inspired

in me a sense of curiosity, to the

lifelong relationships I made,

I feel it’s important to support

Seven Hills, the place that is the

foundation of who I am today.”

Established in 2012, The Seven Hills School Emerging Leaders is a select group of alumni from

the classes of 1987 through

1999. One of the important

ways that the Emerging Leaders

have committed to support

the School is by making an

annual gift of $150 or more

to The Seven Hills Fund. We

are deeply grateful to these

Emerging Leaders for their on-

going dedication to the School.

From the earliest grades, Seven Hills students strive to make a difference in the lives of others, in both the global and local communities. Their initiative is encouraged as they take advantage of abundant opportunities to develop their leadership skills.

WE INVITED STUDENTS TO SHARE THEIR THOUGHTS ON THE ASPECT OF THE SCHOOL’S EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY THAT

STRESSES COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT AND ACTIVE CITIZENSHIP.

“In my earlier days at Seven Hills, my parents expressed concern about the rather unusual two week spring break. What my Seven

Hills experience has taught me, however, is that it’s the quality not the quantity (except when eating at Golden Corral with the tennis team) that matters. Where does that quality stem from? For Seven Hills, it is an ability to make the academic teachings of every day

relevant to the life ahead of us, using real world examples to teach abstract concepts, thus making us all more aware as a

community of leaders and citizens.”

C L A S S O F 2 0 1 4

Gregory Sun

“Seven Hills has a truly profound aura of respect which includes both students and teachers, creating an ideal learning

environment. In seventh grade, I was in math club alongside more mathematically advanced eighth grade boys, and I still felt at home enough to attempt to answer the questions and not be afraid of getting them wrong. Seven Hills is the sort of place where you can grow and learn from your mistakes instead of

worrying about them.”

“The education at Seven Hills is amazing. You learn at a pace that is comfortable for you, and I appreciate that. Sometimes I don’t

even realize that I’m learning, but I keep surprising myself with all that I know. At Seven Hills, I’ve made great friends from all over,

have had some of the coolest experiences, and have teachers that encourage me to make a difference—no matter how small, every

day. I can’t imagine being anywhere else!”

C L A S S O F 2 0 1 7

Kendall Weems

“I think a unique aspect of Seven Hills is that teachers educate with a greater purpose, pushing students to take their learning beyond the classroom and apply their education to a larger context. Personally, I find this approach inspiring, and it’s why I decided to become more active in my neighborhood community. My experiences have made me more socially conscious, and I am so grateful for what I have learned from those I would not have met otherwise. I must thank my teachers for instilling in me lessons of awareness that I know I will always remember.”

At the heart of a Seven Hills education is

the relationship between our

teachers and students. Experts in their fields, our teachers know our students well, help them realize their individual potentials and remain their strong supporters long after they graduate.

These relationships truly set our school apart.

WE ASKED STUDENTS TO SHARE THEIR THOUGHTS ON THE IMPACT OF THESE RELATIONSHIPS ON THE SEVEN HILLS

EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE.

“I believe that the special attention that teachers paid to students not only helped foster the students’ academic individu-ality, but also helped the students gain courage and strength in their studies. I personally am thankful that I was able to go to a

school like Seven Hills where I was always able to seek and receive help from my supportive teachers whenever I needed to

be advised.”

C L A S S O F 2 0 1 3

Jasmine Terry

“Seven Hills has a truly profound aura of respect which includes both students and teachers, creating an ideal learning

environment. In seventh grade, I was in math club alongside more mathematically advanced eighth grade boys, and I still felt at home enough to attempt to answer the questions and not be afraid of getting them wrong. Seven Hills is the sort of place where you can grow and learn from your mistakes instead of

worrying about them.”

“The thing I love the most about Seven Hills is the way the teachers make the classes come alive. For example, this year

in chemistry we tie dyed t-shirts to demonstrate chemical reactions, and in history we embodied a historical leader and

engaged in heated debates until one leader emerged as the greatest leader of all times. In biology last year we watched

a surgery performed live. Seven Hills teachers go well beyond the pages of the textbooks.”

C L A S S O F 2 0 1 5

Lindsay Finn

“In my experience at Seven Hills, I have found that the teachers are incredibly friendly, welcoming, and more than willing to help the students who may be struggling. They take the time to learn about different students’ learning styles, interests, and they give opportunities for students to open doors to pursue subjects in which they are interested. These teachers collaborate with their students in forming and striving toward goals in both academic and creative aspects, and they remain supportive of these goals, providing insight and advice on how to achieve their goals.”

“WE BELIEVE THAT LEARNING IS RELATIONSHIP-BASED, THAT STUDENTS LEARN BEST WHEN TEACHERS

FULLY UNDERSTAND THEIR STUDENTS’ INTERESTS, MOTIVATIONS, AND INDIVIDUAL STYLES OF LEARNING.” “WE SEE OUR TEACHERS, ADMINISTRATORS, AND STAFF AS ROLE MODELS, MENTORS, AND COLLABORATORS, ENGAGING WITH STUDENTS IN MEANINGFUL AND MUTUALLY RESPECTFUL WAYS.”

Whether a fine artist who plays lacrosse, an actor who has a magic touch with technology, or a swimmer who shines as a debater, Seven Hills students are celebrated

for theirindividual gifts and encouraged to explore their previously undiscovered talents. There are no stereotypes of athletes or artists or intellectuals at Seven Hills. There are individuals who are celebrated for being who they are and who they can be.

WE ASKED STUDENTS TO SHARE WHAT THIS ASPECT OF A SEVEN HILLS EDUCATION HAS MEANT TO THEM.

“Students at Seven Hills are undoubtedly accomplished, but what distinguishes them is the motivation behind their success:

they value not the highest marks or most prestigious awards, but rather the sense of joy and fulfillment that comes with

pursuing a personal interest or goal. Students and the School share a mutual relationship: Seven Hills provides the opportuni-

ties, tools and guidance necessary to the students’ personal development, while the students contribute to a flourishing and

vibrant community of gifted and unique individuals.”

Andrew Ligeralde

“Seven Hills has a truly profound aura of respect which includes both students and teachers, creating an ideal learning

environment. In seventh grade, I was in math club alongside more mathematically advanced eighth grade boys, and I still felt at home enough to attempt to answer the questions and not be afraid of getting them wrong. Seven Hills is the sort of place where you can grow and learn from your mistakes instead of

worrying about them.”

“Most people know Seven Hills has a really strong academic program. As a student, I know that’s true, but a big part of my

Seven Hills experience has involved so much more. I am a Seven Hills baseball player, cross country runner, musician, Student Senate leader, photographer, and volunteer. I have

had parts in school plays, cheered our sports teams, worked on the yearbook, and represented Seven Hills at state

competitions and local conferences. I am a student, but at Seven Hills I’m encouraged to explore and cultivate my

interests in many other areas.”

C L A S S O F 2 0 1 7

Jacob Weinstein

“Seven Hills encourages the exploration of all areas of learning. Teachers experiment daily with various techniques—going from hands-on activities to lectures to class discussions—in order to accommodate for the learning abilities and preferences of every student. The variety of electives is expansive and covers a large gamut of art forms, thus allowing students to discover new skills and abilities. In addition, the core curriculum fosters the discovery of new talents in an uncritical manner. For instance, I might never have discovered my love for poetry had my English class not shown me the courage it takes to write.”

:

The Seven Hills community is like a tapestry in which individuals of diverse talents, cultures, and perspectives contribute to the ethos of appreciation and respect that characterizes the School.

WE I NVITED STUDENTS TO COMMENT ON THIS ASPECT OF THEIR EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE AT SEVEN HILLS.

“The atmosphere I encounter at Seven Hills is unlike any other. The School encourages diversity of approaches which, from my point of view, is the greatest benefit. While working in groups, I am amazed to see how everybody has different opinions on different topics and how each person’s opinion is based on his or her past experiences. This wide spectrum

of ideas and attitudes broadens my knowledge of possibilities and, overall, adds to my growing store of

awareness and understanding.”

C L A S S O F 2 0 1 6

Andrei Savu

“Seven Hills has a truly profound aura of respect which includes both students and teachers, creating an ideal learning

environment. In seventh grade, I was in math club alongside more mathematically advanced eighth grade boys, and I still felt at home enough to attempt to answer the questions and not be afraid of getting them wrong. Seven Hills is the sort of place where you can grow and learn from your mistakes instead of

worrying about them.”

“The Seven Hills School is made up of different people with different backgrounds. Throughout the three years that I spent

at Seven Hills, I got to experience cultures and ways of thinking that I had not experienced before. In many classes,

people would bring various experiences and ways of thinking to the table. This allowed us to understand different views of the problem ahead or a different perspective in analyzing a

poem or book. Diversity has brought many things to Seven Hills. Diversity has especially taught me that you can always

learn from your peers and their backgrounds.”

C L A S S O F 2 0 1 3

Luis Visoso

“The one thing that I learned during my time at Seven Hills is that I do not know everything nor have I experienced everything. Luckily, I have classmates and teachers who have widely different experiences than I do. Whether it is talking to a friend about her travels in India or to a classmate about working at a clothing store, I learn from each about a world I never could have imagined. I, in turn, hope that sharing my experiences has broadened the horizons for others, and I am thankful that my classmates have broadened mine.”

C L A S S O F 2 0 1 3

Olivia Williams

“Seven Hills educates in every aspect of life, not just academics. There are so many things that a student can do and be a part of at the School. Not only can students have a wide variety of academic, athletic, and social experiences, they can also find friends easily due to the friendly and close-knit community that Seven Hills encourages. Speaking from personal experience, I can say that Seven Hills has truly shaped me as a person because of the different types of people I have met and the lessons that each of them has taught me.”
