A lan Richardson – Surge There can be little doubt of the impact of Surge on the outdoor arts sector in Scotland. As well as running festivals and events, Surge is involved in creating development opportunities for artists and practioners through a variety of projects and activities – making Alan a key influencer in outdoor arts in Scotland and beyond. A rts Council England - Alison Clark, Angela Chappell, Andrew Ellerby, Clive Lyttle, Catherine Mitchell, Jon Linstrum, Pamela Vision & many more We are fortunate that there are many different ACE schemes and individuals that support the outdoor arts sector – too many individuals to mention them all; however special mention should go to the Director of Combined Arts Alison Clark - there can be little doubt that Alison carries enormous influence for policy and advocacy of our sector. A ngus MacKechnie – ISAN The Director of ISAN has excellent form in the outdoor arts world; Angus was a key influencer in the capital in his role at National Theatre’s Watch This Space; dipping his toe in the water of directing; a Clore leadership fellow and being one of a select few outdoor arts professionals to regularly sport a suit at his events. A nthony Missen and Kevin Edward Turner – Company Chameleon Co-Artistic Directors, Anthony and Kevin have raised the profile of UK outdoor dance with their beautifully crafted intimate performances – Chameleon’s most recent outdoor piece, Witness This, based on Kevin’s own experience, shows that outdoor arts can tackle challenging subjects matters. B en Faulks – Plunge Boom Creator of several small-scale outdoor shows that are touring each year, and one of the only outdoor artists to have a daily TV slot on BBC, which gives him more influence than most. B ettina Linstrum – Arts Agenda An experienced producer with extensive international connections, multi-lingual Bettina is one of the UK’s most high-ranking consultants. B ev Adams – NASA Artistic Director & CEO of the much missed Faceless Arts, Bev has 30 years of experience in outdoor arts, carnival and community engagement projects and is active in both ISAN and NASA. B ill Gee – Independent / Inside Out Dorset One of the UK’s most experienced independent producers and promoters, Bill’s work has included Milton Keynes festival, ISAN and in one of his current roles as Co-Artistic Director of Inside Out Dorset. B ill Palmer – Avanti Display Veteran performer and director Bill Palmer has appeared at 100s of festivals across the UK and internationally. His company, Avanti Display, continues to influence a whole generation of outdoor artists. B radley Hemmings & Michelle Walker – Greenwich+Docklands International Festival Artistic Director and founder of GDIF, Co-Director of 2012 Paralympic Opening Ceremony and founder member of Without Walls – his place on this list has to be assured. Bradley’s talents, combined with Michelle Walker’s experience from Hat Fair and Oxford Playhouse can only mean great things for London’s leading outdoor arts festival. C henine Bhathena – Greater London Authority As Senior Culture Manager at GLA Chenine was influential in the Showtime festival that saw outdoor arts take place across London during London 2012. Prior to that as an Arts Council officer and independent producer, Chenine’s experience in outdoor arts is vast. C hris Squire - For the Love Of It/NASA - Impossible Arts A leading light in the networking event, For the Love of It, and a NASA Steering Group Member, Chris is also the co-founder of Impossible Arts, a creative organisation that spans both participatory and digital arts practice. C laire McColgan – Liverpool City Council As Head of Culture in Liverpool, Claire has led the way in bringing Royal De Luxe to the city twice and presenting La Machine’s Spider during the Capital of Culture Year. Liverpool continues to deliver world-class outdoor events. C laire Raftery & Damien Wright – Periplum Two of the most prolific and respected outdoor arts directors in the UK, Periplum has been touring internationally for a decade. They create ground-breaking site-responsive outdoor theatre performance that brings the audience right into the middle of the action. D avid Rosenberg – Requardt and Rosenberg As a founder member of Shunt, David’s impact on London theatre is undeniable, and his collaborations with choreographer Frauke Requardt have created some of the most controversial and memorable outdoor arts shows in the last five years; whilst they divide critical opinion, the influence of shows such as Motorshow, Electric Hotel and The Roof is still clear. D avid Wheeler & Joanne Wain – IOU Theatre As Artistic and Executive Director of veteran company IOU, one of the only NPO funded companies to make outdoor work, David and Joanne’s dedication to combining art forms with new technology makes the company a powerful force. D eb Mullins & Daniel Bernstein – Emergency Exit Arts A long-established company with extensive community development experience that is still producing work. EEA is taking a role in supporting new work through their Itch Nights. D orothy Max Prior - Total Theatre The Editor of Total Theatre, one of the most respected publications that deal with outdoor work; plus Choreographer/Dramaturg/Writer for Ragroof Players. E dward Taylor & Sue Auty – Whalley Range All Stars Edward and Sue are the driving force behind one of the UK’s most prolific, established and respected creators of outdoor work who are still touring widely internationally after 30 years in the sector. E sther Simpson & Paul Long – Metro-Boulot-Dodo Well-known as creators of installation-based theatre experience for outdoor spaces, MBD created a large-scale work in 2014, and in October 2017 premiered its company’s new show that uses Virtual Reality and 360º film to create an immersive experience. F rank Wilson – Event International Founder of one of the UK’s biggest festivals Stockton International Riverside Festival, a founder member of Without Walls with extensive international connections, producer for Southpaw Dance Company and MBE for services to Festival Arts. Frank’s success in the sector is something we can all aspire to. G emma Thomas & Karl Greenwood – Appetite, Stoke-on-Trent One of the UK’s newest outdoor arts programmes through the CPP project in Stoke-on-Trent, Appetite’s influence is extending beyond the West Midlands. The work of Gemma, Karl and of the rest of the team was influential in the city’s decision to bid for UK Capital of Culture. H elen Marriage – Artichoke Responsible for bringing The Sultan’s Elephant to London, a game-changing event for the positioning of outdoor arts in the UK and the success of Lumiere in Durham and London, Artichoke continues to surprise and provoke. J aine Lumsden – Creative Scotland As the head of outdoor arts for Creative Scotland Jaine is a great advocate for the sector in Scotland and the UK - though recent funding decisions are currently making waves in the sector. J ames Macpherson – Artizani Veteran performer James is also an experienced teacher, director and passionate advocate for outdoor arts – he has spent much of 2017 working on his doctoral research around contemporary UK outdoor arts with a particular focus on their relationship with the public space. J an Doherty – Stockton Council Artistic Director of SIRF, one of the UK’s biggest and longest established street arts festivals, Jan programmes outdoor arts from UK and International artists who aren’t afraid to take risks. J ane Hytch & Claire Maddocks – Imagineer Productions Creators of the 2012 Project Godiva Awakes and directors of the Festival of Imagineers, Jane, Claire and the rest of the team at Imagineer are helping to position Coventry as the place to be for artists looking to create imaginative new works. J eni Barnard & Barney White – Acrojou Jeni and Barney have led Acrojou to the top of the UK’s outdoor arts scene. The company’s stunning work often centres around the German Wheel and has toured to hundreds of festivals all over the world. J enny Sealey – Graeae As Director of Graeae and Co-Director of the 2012 Paralympic Opening Ceremony Jenny is one of the people responsible for increasing the visibility of disabled performers in the outdoor arts sector. J eremy Shine – Manchester International Arts Veteran programmer Jeremy is Co-founder of Manchester International Arts, and Artistic Director of the much missed Mintfest as well as numerous other independent events. J o Burgess & Nicki Street - Fool’s Paradise Probably the best-known agents in the outdoor arts world, Jo and Nicky represent hundreds of companies and are responsible for signing more performance contracts than any other organisation on this list. The XTRAX Hot 100 celebrates those who help shape, champion, support and raise the bar for outdoor arts across the UK. J oe Mackintosh & Veronica Stephens – SeaChange Arts, Great Yarmouth The rise of Seachange in the last 5 years with the enormous Out There Festival in Great Yarmouth has been impressive; internationally networked, they also run the Up and Out network, the Coasters network and a creation centre at the recently refurbished Drill Hall. J ojo Pickering & Simon Pullum- Bash Street Theatre Well-established and prolific company representing the UK internationally year after year; their silent movie inspired work combines live music, theatre and circus skills and is popular with audiences and international bookers. K aren Poley - Bicycle Ballet Diligently promoting the value of performance with and on bicycles, Karen’s work and advocacy for politically conscious performance is unique. K ate Wood – Activate As Co Director of Inside Out festival and numerous other events and roles, Kate is one of the leading figures in outdoor arts in the South of England. C amille Beaumier – NoFit State Circus The tenacious Creative Producer for NoFit State Circus, with her specific interest in trans-European collaborations and international development, has played a huge part in NoFit State’s success; they tour their outdoor shows to festivals all over the UK and internationally. B illy Alwen, Claire Hodgson & Jamie Beddard - Extraordinary Bodies As the people behind the UK’s leading professional integrated circus company, Billy, Claire and Jamie are breaking boundaries through their artistic practice increasing awareness, capacity and leadership for integration of D/deaf, disabled and non-disabled artists. F lora Herberich – Independent A rising star of outdoor work with a specialism in circus, Flora’s dedication is clear in her work as the producer of Canvas, one of the UK’s best showcase events dedicated to contemporary UK circus. J an Lennox – Watermans Arts Centre The Director of Watermans has been developing the purpose-built outdoor arts performance space in Hounslow, Bell Square through an excellent year-round programme of outdoor arts events from British and international artists. K aty Fuller – Hull City of Culture As an independent Katy has been involved in numerous outdoor arts events and organisations. As Executive Producer, she was part of the success of Hull 2017 City Of Culture, and is now going to part of delivering its legacy as the recently appointed Creative Director. K evin Finnan & Louise Richards – Motionhouse Motionhouse has pioneered a model of creating and touring indoor and outdoor dance works; their accessible, narrative-based dance works have set the standard for dance companies in Europe. K ully Thiarai - National Theatre Wales Kully is the Director of Wales’ radical and influential National Theatre, that delivers all manner of work in outdoor spaces as part of its varied programme. Prior to this, she has much experience in outdoor work as part of an impressive theatre career that includes Director of Cast in Doncaster, Mandala for Sampad in 2012, and many more pieces of varied scales. L ina Johansson – Mimbre As Co-Director of the female acrobatic ensemble Mimbre, Lina is one of the UK’s most successful outdoor arts exports; now with an increasing profile as a director Lina is transitioning from performer to director and makes it look effortless. L ou Lomas – Independent A rising star in the West Midlands outdoor arts scene, Lou is gathering a huge amount of experience as a producer with a number of companies and as creative producer for The Festival of Imagineers. She is on our “one to watch” list for the coming years. L ucy Bennett & Sho Shibata – Stopgap Dance Company As Artistic Director and Executive Producer of integrated dance company Stopgap, Lucy and Sho have worked to develop and tour several successful dance pieces and can take credit for the visibility of disabled performers in the outdoor arts sector. L yn Gardner - The Stage & The Guardian One of the only journalists from a national paper to recognise outdoor arts, and a passionate advocate for non-mainstream theatre, Lyn is an ally and an advocate for quality outdoor performance. M arc Brew – Marc Brew Company Director and choreographer Marc creates beautiful dance performance for indoor and outdoor presentation and has increased the visibility of disabled dancers on the outdoor scene. M aresa Von Stockert – Tilted Productions One of the UK’s most creative choreographers, Maresa has created some of the most memorable dance-theatre work for outdoor performance in recent years; often working with an international cast Tilted’s work is much admired across Europe. M aria Bota – Great Exhibition of the North Prior to taking up the role of Creative Producer for Great Exhibition of the North, Maria was director of Salisbury International Festival and Milton Keynes International Festival. Maria has a wealth of experience and knowl- edge of all things outdoor arts. M ark Ball – The Factory Mark has shown an ongoing commitment to commissioning and presenting large-scale outdoor work during his time at LIFT, and often risk-taking work at that. Investing substantial sums in the Requardt & Rosenberg creations The Roof (2014) and Motorshow (2012) and bringing international work to London. In his new role as Associate Artistic Director of The Factory, Manchester’s upcoming £110 million theatre and arts venue, Mark’s influence extends beyond the capital. M ikey Martins – Freedom Festival, Hull A respected independent producer in his own right, with a background as an artist, compère, and programmer, Mikey’s work has included working for Norfolk & Norwich Festival, as well as extensive spells in Australia. Now at the helm of Freedom Festival as CEO and Artistic Director, Mikey is quickly becoming a huge player in the sector. N eil Butler – UZ Arts A founder member of the European network In Situ, as well as being a founder of Brighton’s legendary Zap Club, Neil has extensive international connections beyond his home in Scotland, including running creation centre in Sri Lanka A well established outdoor arts presenter and producer, his influence is vast. O rit Azaz – Independent Creative Director In the outdoor arts world Orit is best known as Director of NoFit State’s outdoor shows Barricade and Park Life, and as a leading force in the development of outdoor arts in the West Midlands. P aschale Straiton - Red Herring/NASA An experienced artist and performer Paschale has created and performed in several outdoor shows and is the chair of NASA - the National Association of Street Artists. R obin Morley - Magnetic Events An experienced programmer, festival director and producer, and a former Chair of ISAN, Robin is a veteran of the outdoor arts scene and still regarded as a key influencer. S ean Gandini – Gandini Juggling Sean Gandini is renowned as the man behind changing the perceptions of juggling as an art form. His hit show Smashed is one of the finest displays of this. Gandini Juggling’s portfolio of work has toured to outdoor and indoor stages across the globe. S tella Hall – Festival of Thrift As an independent producer and consultant, Stella has been one of the major commissioners and presenters of new outdoor work through a variety of roles including Newcastle Gateshead, Preston Guild and The Quays. Currently working as Festival Director for Festival of Thrift. S tephen Munn & Phil Hargreaves – Deda & Derby Festé The man behind the Derby Festé, one of the most impressive new festivals in the UK, Stephen brings together a programme that is both accessible and challenging that has placed Derby on the outdoor arts map. Now working with creative producer Phil Hargreaves, Derby Festé can only go on to bigger and better things! S tewart Collins - Henley Festival Stewart Collins is known and loved by festival audiences across the UK. He has worked as Artistic Director of the Henley, Chelsea and Petworth Festivals as well as the Holders Season in Barbados. Stewart has been artistic director for the prestigious Henley Festival since 1991 and has turned it from a local community gala into an internationally renowned music and art extravaganza. T ina Redford – LeftCoast One of the Creative People and Places projects, Tina and the team at LeftCoast are making their influence felt on outdoor arts by commissioning and presenting a range of outdoor work as part of the Blackpool and Wyre LeftCoast programme. With LeftCoast involve, Blackpool is sure to be known for more than its world-famous illuminations. T ony Adigun – Avant Garde Dance Tony is a man of many hats: Creative director, curator, choreographer, dancer, educator and mentor all worn with the same signature passion and style. He is the founder and Artistic Director of the cutting edge hip- hop company Avant Garde Dance. V anessa Allen – Bradford Festival As the Major Events Programme Manager for Bradford, Vanessa is responsible for the Bradford Festival and all the events that take place on the beautiful new square in the city centre. A founder member of the National Association of Local Authority Outdoor Events Organisers Vanessa has also pioneered a new approach to the Christmas Lights Switch On in Bradford. A lan Parkinson - Architects of Air As founder of AOA, Alan has helped change how light is used in public spaces. AOA’s monumental ephemeral sculptures have wowed millions of visitors around the world. A li Pretty - Kinetika Ali leads Kinetika, an internationally renowned company that bridges the gap between the carnival and outdoor arts sectors. The company merges world-class design with community projects to produce spectacular outdoor events that engage audiences. A ndrew Loretto – Winchester Hat Fair Claiming to be the longest established UK street arts festival Hat Fair has a well-established place as a major meeting place for outdoor artists to present shows funded by the audience through hatting - putting down the hat, or busking. Now also recognised for the non- hatting shows including new commissions, as the new director of this established festival Andrew’s position is assured. A ngie Dight – Mischief La Bas Angie is the co-founder of Mischief La Bas along with the late great and much missed Ian Smith. Angie has led MLB to become one of Scotland’s most exciting, creative, and eccentric, outdoor arts companies. All the more sorry to see the news that it has lost out in the last round of Creative Scotland cuts. B otis Seva – Far from The Norm As Artistic Director of Far From the Norm, Botis has established himself as a creative choreographer with the ability to work across forms and adapt his artistic practice whether working with professional companies or within the community dance scene. With two very successful outdoor shows under his belt, he is one to watch. C eline McKillion – Imagine Watford and Imagine Luton As Project Manager for Watford Palace Theatre’s outdoor arts festivals Imagine Watford and Imagine Luton, Celine is a respected programmer with connections with many key players in the sector. J ens Frimann- SO Festival Recently appointed as Artistic Director, Jens follows in the footsteps of Lorna Fulton who transformed Lincolnshire’s coastal district of East Lindsey into an international arts destination complete with world- class performers and dance acts. J o Burns - Without Walls As Chair of Without Walls, founder member of BOP Consultants and with a background in high-end research, Jo is one of the most strategic advocates for the outdoor arts sector in the UK. L orna Rees – Gobbledegook Theatre Lorna Rees has been Artistic Director of Gobbledegook Theatre Company since 2007 and has paved the way for the creation of playful, considered outdoor work. In 2017, the company’s show Ear Trumpet travelled all the way to Korea, Lorna herself had a residency in Sri Lanka. Gobbledegook will continue to make a noise in the UK outdoor arts sector. M ark Denbigh - Norfolk and Norwich Festival Head of Production at Norfolk and Norwich Festival, the flagship arts festival for the East of England with a reputation for innovative and inspirational programming and commissioning, Mark works with artists to refine an idea and grow it into something remarkable. M artin Green – Hull City of Culture 2017 After his enormous success as Director of Ceremonies for the 2012 London Games, it was hard to know what Martin would do next – but as Director & Chief Executive of the UK’s first City of Culture in Hull, Martin has again set the bar high and been rewarded with a CBE for his achievements. Outdoor events were part of the magic created in Hull, and Martin looks set to continue in this field in his consultancy role for Edinburgh’s Hogmany. M ira Kaushik – Akademi One of the shining lights of the Indian dance world, Mira has risen to the challenge of taking Indian dance to outdoor locations. With an OBE to her name, Mira’s contribution to dance is recognised across the whole of the UK arts sector. A lison Young & Monica Ferguson - The Stables Monica and Alison are the duo behind The Stables, Milton Keynes’ leading multipurpose arts venue. In 2010, The Stables produced the first Milton Keynes International Festival. Held every two years in July, the Festival is now established as one of the UK’s leading arts events. K at Joyce & Nathan Curry - Tangled Feet A physical theatre ensemble with a growing body of work created for outdoor spaces, Nathan and Kat are one of the newest NPO supported su companies on this list and are certainly ones to watch… J an Patzke & Olivia Quayle - Joli Vyann Jan and Olivia are two of the UK’s hottest performers. When not creating a style of their own, which fuses acrobalance and contemporary dance, they’re busy touring their work across the UK and overseas to all corners of the world. J udy Barrington Smuts & Matt Feerick - Wet Picnic Wet Picnic continues to take its eccentric and absurd shows wherever there are people to watch, in the UK and internationally. The company is becoming increasing ambitious in their work, creating interactive experiences that involve the audience in the show. P ax Nindi - Global Carnivalz Ltd Pax is one of the leaders in the carnival sector. As the former ACE lead for street arts, he changed the way carnival and outdoor arts is perceived in the UK. P hillipa Haynes - Lakes Alive With experience as Director at Wye Valley River Festival and AfriKa Eye, Philippa now delivers the arts festival in and around Kendal that celebrates landscape, people and place and builds on the legacy left behind by Mintfest. J onathan Goodacre & Penny Mills - The Audience Agency As authors of the much-anticipated research reports about Outdoor arts as part of the Arts Council Funded Audience Finder project, Penny and Jonathan (and their colleagues at the Audience Agency) create research that could be powerful advocacy weapons for the next 10 years – let’s hope so! E leanor Hooper & Pete Gunson – Pif Paf Theatre In recent years, Pete and Elly have carved out a niche for them- selves in the outdoor arts field, developing quirky, physical theatre/ circus inspired work that appeals to broad audiences, as well as taking an active role in NASA and a host of community projects. R achel Clare - Crying Out Loud As Artistic Director of Crying Out Loud, one of the leading producers for high-quality UK circus, Rachel is responsible for developing partnerships in the UK and Europe and supporting both indoor and outdoor work. R ay Lee - Independent Artist An award-winning sound artist and composer that bridges the gap between sound, visual and digital art, Ray’s work has been presented all over the world. Ray makes contemporary music accessible and engaging for a wide audience and has received significant support from the British Council - a sure sign of his influence in the arts sector. R obby Graham – Southpaw Dance Company One of outdoor arts leading choreographers, Newcastle-based Robby has created several successful outdoor projects that have toured widely and continues to develop more works. Robby’s talents haven’t gone unnoticed: he won the Kevin Spacey Foundation Artists Choice Award in 2016 and choreographed the National Theatre Angels in America. R oger Hartley – Bureau of Silly Ideas One of the outdoor arts companies to receive support from Arts Council through the National Portfolio, Roger and the BOSI team have created their own unique brand of inspired theatrical silliness. R osie Strang – Articulture Rosie is one of the key players in Wales’ outdoor sector. Through her work and that of the rest of the the team at Articulture things are looking brighter than ever for this ever-growing sector. R owan Hoban & Sarah Bird - Wild Rumpus Wild Rumpus work from the Whirligig a rural creation space and woodland office in Cheshire. The team produce Just So Festival, one of the top family-friendly greenfield festivals in the UK and the Northen Festivals Network. Their talents haven’t gone unnoticed; they’re about to take Just So Festival to New Zealand. S arah Trist - Independent Agent An experienced agent and producer Sarah represents several outdoor dance companies, bridging the gap between indoor and outdoor touring. A jay Chhabra & Simmy Gupta – Nutkhut Nutkhut has been making outdoor work for many years. The combination of Simmy’s choreography with Ajay’s flair for the theatrical has resulted in shows that make use of all the senses and stay true to the company’s roots. S imon Chatterton - 101 /Independent Simon has been an influencer on the outdoor arts scene for many years as a producer, promoter and strategic practitioner. He is the tenacious and passionate visionary behind the creation centre 101 in Newbury which has already supported the development of numerous new outdoor works. S teve Eggleton – Photographer You might not know his name, but you’ll have seen his work. Steve Eggleton travels up and down the country photographing outdoor events and festivals. His photos feature in publications and brochures. He will have seen as many outdoor arts shows as any festival director on this list. S ue Hill – Wildworks Wildworks remains one of the UK’s most celebrated outdoor companies and this is down to the work of the much missed Bill and Sue’s unstoppable interest for the role of culture and art in building and sustaining communities. T anya Peters & Andrew Comben - Brighton Festival As the Senior Producer (with responsibility for outdoor programming) and Artistic Director (respectively) of Brighton Festival Tanya and Andrew are certainly in a position of influence. One of the largest festivals in the UK, Brighton Festival isn’t afraid to take risks with its programme of new commissions, premieres and daring work. V icki Amedume – Upswing Since 1997, Vicki has performed and created aerial and circus based work that has been performed in the UK and worldwide. She has worked across all spheres of circus from traditional touring tented circuses to large-scale outdoor spaces and intimate touring indoor theatre. D anielle Marshall – Circulate London Danielle makes sure that outstanding high-quality performance can be found in Outer London through her work with Circulate, a group of four London venues working together to present outstanding outdoor arts. J amie Ogilvie & Wendy Hesketh-Ogilvie - Wired Aerial Theatre From the Higher Space in Liverpool, Wendy and Jamie have built one of the UK’s most pioneering companies, creating enduring work which has thrilled audiences across the world (recently in Chile). As the World Tipped is regarded as one of the finest large-scale shows to come out of the UK. A nnabel Carberry & Massi Rossetti – Lost in Translation Circus Lost in Translation is a fast-rising, artist-led contemporary circus company blending high-level, dynamic circus skills within a character-driven theatrical context. L iz Pugh & John Wassell - Walk the Plank Founders of Walk The Plank Liz and John have done everything there is to do in the outdoor arts world; from touring large-scale shows, creating inspirational pyrotechnic displays, running a theatre ship, delivering parades on a huge scale, creating opening and closing events on an epic scale in the UK and internationally. Simply one of the driving forces of outdoor work in the UK. A ngus Farquhar - NVA The Creative Director of Scotland’s acclaimed company NVA has pioneered the creation of extraordinary outdoor work in public spaces, playing with the landscape and the built environment to create truly distinctive and memorable work. Often presenting work on a very large scale using light, sound and collective movement, the announcment that they are to lose their funding from Creative Scotland has been met with surprise across the country.

Angus was a key influencer in the capital in his role at National Theatre’s Watch This Space; dipping his toe in the water of directing; a Clore leadership fellow and being one of a select few outdoor arts professionals to regularly sport a suit at his events.

Anthony Missen and Kevin Edward Turner – Company Chameleon

Co-Artistic Directors, Anthony and Kevin have raised the profile of UK outdoor dance with their beautifully crafted intimate performances – Chameleon’s most recent outdoor piece, Witness This, based on Kevin’s own experience, shows that outdoor arts can tackle challenging subjects matters.

Ben Faulks – Plunge BoomCreator of several small-scale outdoor shows that are touring each

year, and one of the only outdoor artists to have a daily TV slot on BBC, which gives him more influence than most.

Jaine Lumsden – Creative ScotlandAs the head of outdoor arts for Creative Scotland Jaine is a great

advocate for the sector in Scotland and the UK - though recent funding decisions are currently making waves in the sector.

bicycles, Karen’s work and advocacy for politically conscious performance is unique.

Kate Wood – ActivateAs Co Director of Inside Out festival and numerous other events and

roles, Kate is one of the leading figures in outdoor arts in the South of England.

Camille Beaumier – NoFit State Circus The tenacious Creative Producer for NoFit State Circus, with her

Flora Herberich – Independent A rising star of outdoor work with a specialism in circus, Flora’s

dedication is clear in her work as the producer of Canvas, one of the UK’s best showcase events dedicated to contemporary UK circus.

Jan Lennox – Watermans Arts Centre The Director of Watermans has been developing the purpose-built

outdoor arts performance space in Hounslow, Bell Square through an excellent year-round programme of outdoor arts events from British and international artists.

Katy Fuller – Hull City of Culture As an independent Katy has been involved in numerous outdoor arts

events and organisations. As Executive Producer, she was part of the success of Hull 2017 City Of Culture, and is now going to part of delivering its legacy as the recently appointed Creative Director.

Kevin Finnan & Louise Richards – Motionhouse Motionhouse has pioneered a model of creating and

touring indoor and outdoor dance works; their accessible, narrative-based dance works have set the standard for dance companies in Europe.

Kully Thiarai - National Theatre Wales Kully is the Director of Wales’ radical and influential National Theatre,

that delivers all manner of work in outdoor spaces as part of its varied programme. Prior to this, she has much experience in outdoor work as part of an impressive theatre career that includes Director of Cast in Doncaster, Mandala for Sampad in 2012, and many more pieces of varied scales.

Lina Johansson – Mimbre As Co-Director of the female acrobatic ensemble Mimbre, Lina is one

of the UK’s most successful outdoor arts exports; now with an increasing profile as a director Lina is transitioning from performer to director and makes it look effortless.

Lou Lomas – Independent A rising star in the West Midlands outdoor arts scene, Lou is gathering

a huge amount of experience as a producer with a number of companies and as creative producer for The Festival of Imagineers. She is on our “one to watch” list for the coming years.

Lucy Bennett & Sho Shibata – Stopgap Dance Company As Artistic Director and Executive Producer of integrated dance

company Stopgap, Lucy and Sho have worked to develop and tour several successful dance pieces and can take credit for the visibility of disabled performers in the outdoor arts sector.

Lyn Gardner - The Stage & The Guardian One of the only journalists from a national paper to recognise outdoor

arts, and a passionate advocate for non-mainstream theatre, Lyn is an ally and an advocate for quality outdoor performance.

Marc Brew – Marc Brew Company Director and choreographer Marc creates beautiful dance

performance for indoor and outdoor presentation and has increased the visibility of disabled dancers on the outdoor scene.

Maresa Von Stockert – Tilted Productions One of the UK’s most creative choreographers, Maresa has created

some of the most memorable dance-theatre work for outdoor performance in recent years; often working with an international cast Tilted’s work is much admired across Europe.

Maria Bota – Great Exhibition of the North Prior to taking up the role of Creative Producer for Great Exhibition of

the North, Maria was director of Salisbury International Festival and Milton Keynes International Festival. Maria has a wealth of experience and knowl-edge of all things outdoor arts.

Mark Ball – The Factory Mark has shown an ongoing commitment to commissioning and

presenting large-scale outdoor work during his time at LIFT, and often risk-taking work at that. Investing substantial sums in the Requardt & Rosenberg creations The Roof (2014) and Motorshow (2012) and bringing international work to London. In his new role as Associate Artistic Director of The Factory, Manchester’s upcoming £110 million theatre and arts venue, Mark’s influence extends beyond the capital.

Mikey Martins – Freedom Festival, Hull A respected independent producer in his own right, with a

background as an artist, compère, and programmer, Mikey’s work has included working for Norfolk & Norwich Festival, as well as extensive spells in Australia. Now at the helm of Freedom Festival as CEO and Artistic Director, Mikey is quickly becoming a huge player in the sector.

Neil Butler – UZ Arts A founder member of the European network In Situ, as well as being a

founder of Brighton’s legendary Zap Club, Neil has extensive international connections beyond his home in Scotland, including running creation centre in Sri Lanka A well established outdoor arts presenter and producer, his influence is vast.

Orit Azaz – Independent Creative Director In the outdoor arts world Orit is best known as Director of NoFit State’s

outdoor shows Barricade and Park Life, and as a leading force in the development of outdoor arts in the West Midlands.

Paschale Straiton - Red Herring/NASA An experienced artist and performer Paschale has created and

performed in several outdoor shows and is the chair of NASA - the National Association of Street Artists.

Robin Morley - Magnetic Events An experienced programmer, festival director and producer, and a

former Chair of ISAN, Robin is a veteran of the outdoor arts scene and still regarded as a key influencer.

Sean Gandini – Gandini Juggling Sean Gandini is renowned as the man behind changing the

perceptions of juggling as an art form. His hit show Smashed is one of the finest displays of this. Gandini Juggling’s portfolio of work has toured to outdoor and indoor stages across the globe.

Stella Hall – Festival of ThriftAs an independent producer and consultant, Stella has been one of

the major commissioners and presenters of new outdoor work through a variety of roles including Newcastle Gateshead, Preston Guild and The Quays. Currently working as Festival Director for Festival of Thrift.

Stephen Munn & Phil Hargreaves – Deda & Derby FestéThe man behind the Derby Festé, one of the most impressive

new festivals in the UK, Stephen brings together a programme that is both accessible and challenging that has placed Derby on the outdoor arts map. Now working with creative producer Phil Hargreaves, Derby Festé can only go on to bigger and better things!

Stewart Collins - Henley FestivalStewart Collins is known and loved by festival audiences across the

UK. He has worked as Artistic Director of the Henley, Chelsea and Petworth Festivals as well as the Holders Season in Barbados. Stewart has been artistic director for the prestigious Henley Festival since 1991 and has turned it from a local community gala into an internationally renowned music and art extravaganza.

Tina Redford – LeftCoastOne of the Creative People and Places projects, Tina and the team at

LeftCoast are making their influence felt on outdoor arts by commissioning and presenting a range of outdoor work as part of the Blackpool and Wyre LeftCoast programme. With LeftCoast involve, Blackpool is sure to be known for more than its world-famous illuminations.

Tony Adigun – Avant Garde Dance Tony is a man of many hats: Creative director, curator, choreographer,

dancer, educator and mentor all worn with the same signature passion and style. He is the founder and Artistic Director of the cutting edge hip-hop company Avant Garde Dance.

Vanessa Allen – Bradford Festival As the Major Events Programme Manager for Bradford, Vanessa is

responsible for the Bradford Festival and all the events that take place on the beautiful new square in the city centre. A founder member of the National Association of Local Authority Outdoor Events Organisers Vanessa has also pioneered a new approach to the Christmas Lights Switch On in Bradford.

Alan Parkinson - Architects of Air As founder of AOA, Alan has helped change how light is used in

public spaces. AOA’s monumental ephemeral sculptures have wowed millions of visitors around the world.

Ali Pretty - Kinetika Ali leads Kinetika, an internationally renowned company that bridges

the gap between the carnival and outdoor arts sectors. The company merges world-class design with community projects to produce spectacular outdoor events that engage audiences.

Andrew Loretto – Winchester Hat Fair Claiming to be the longest established UK street arts festival Hat Fair

has a well-established place as a major meeting place for outdoor artists to present shows funded by the audience through hatting - putting down the hat, or busking. Now also recognised for the non- hatting shows including new commissions, as the new director of this established festival Andrew’s position is assured.

Angie Dight – Mischief La BasAngie is the co-founder of Mischief La Bas along with the late great

and much missed Ian Smith. Angie has led MLB to become one of Scotland’s most exciting, creative, and eccentric, outdoor arts companies. All the more sorry to see the news that it has lost out in the last round of Creative Scotland cuts.

Botis Seva – Far from The Norm As Artistic Director of Far From the Norm, Botis has established himself

as a creative choreographer with the ability to work across forms and adapt his artistic practice whether working with professional companies or within the community dance scene. With two very successful outdoor shows under his belt, he is one to watch.

Celine McKillion – Imagine Watford and Imagine Luton As Project Manager for Watford Palace Theatre’s outdoor arts

festivals Imagine Watford and Imagine Luton, Celine is a respected programmer with connections with many key players in the sector.

Jens Frimann- SO Festival Recently appointed as Artistic Director, Jens follows in the footsteps

of Lorna Fulton who transformed Lincolnshire’s coastal district of East Lindsey into an international arts destination complete with world-class performers and dance acts.

Jo Burns - Without Walls As Chair of Without Walls, founder member of BOP Consultants and

with a background in high-end research, Jo is one of the most strategic advocates for the outdoor arts sector in the UK.

Lorna Rees – Gobbledegook TheatreLorna Rees has been Artistic Director of Gobbledegook Theatre

Company since 2007 and has paved the way for the creation of playful, considered outdoor work. In 2017, the company’s show Ear Trumpet travelled all the way to Korea, Lorna herself had a residency in Sri Lanka. Gobbledegook will continue to make a noise in the UK outdoor arts sector.

Mark Denbigh - Norfolk and Norwich Festival Head of Production at Norfolk and Norwich Festival, the flagship arts

festival for the East of England with a reputation for innovative and inspirational programming and commissioning, Mark works with artists to refine an idea and grow it into something remarkable.

Martin Green – Hull City of Culture 2017 After his enormous success as Director of Ceremonies for the 2012

London Games, it was hard to know what Martin would do next – but as Director & Chief Executive of the UK’s first City of Culture in Hull, Martin has again set the bar high and been rewarded with a CBE for his achievements. Outdoor events were part of the magic created in Hull, and Martin looks set to continue in this field in his consultancy role for Edinburgh’s Hogmany.

Mira Kaushik – Akademi One of the shining lights of the Indian dance world, Mira has risen to

the challenge of taking Indian dance to outdoor locations. With an OBE to her name, Mira’s contribution to dance is recognised across the whole of the UK arts sector.

Alison Young & Monica Ferguson - The Stables Monica and Alison are the duo behind The Stables, Milton

Keynes’ leading multipurpose arts venue. In 2010, The Stables produced the first Milton Keynes International Festival. Held every two years in July, the Festival is now established as one of the UK’s leading arts events.

Kat Joyce & Nathan Curry - Tangled Feet A physical theatre ensemble with a growing body of work

created for outdoor spaces, Nathan and Kat are one of the newest NPO supported su companies on this list and are certainly ones to watch…

Jan Patzke & Olivia Quayle - Joli Vyann Jan and Olivia are two of the UK’s hottest performers. When not

creating a style of their own, which fuses acrobalance and contemporary dance, they’re busy touring their work across the UK and overseas to all corners of the world.

Judy Barrington Smuts & Matt Feerick - Wet Picnic Wet Picnic continues to take its eccentric and absurd shows

wherever there are people to watch, in the UK and internationally. The company is becoming increasing ambitious in their work, creating interactive experiences that involve the audience in the show.

Pax Nindi - Global Carnivalz LtdPax is one of the leaders in the carnival sector. As the former ACE lead

for street arts, he changed the way carnival and outdoor arts is perceived in the UK.

Phillipa Haynes - Lakes Alive With experience as Director at Wye Valley River Festival and AfriKa Eye,

Philippa now delivers the arts festival in and around Kendal that celebrates landscape, people and place and builds on the legacy left behind by Mintfest.

Jonathan Goodacre & Penny Mills - The Audience Agency As authors of the much-anticipated research reports about

Outdoor arts as part of the Arts Council Funded Audience Finder project, Penny and Jonathan (and their colleagues at the Audience Agency) create research that could be powerful advocacy weapons for the next 10 years – let’s hope so!

Eleanor Hooper & Pete Gunson – Pif Paf Theatre In recent years, Pete and Elly have carved out a niche for them-

selves in the outdoor arts field, developing quirky, physical theatre/ circus inspired work that appeals to broad audiences, as well as taking an active role in NASA and a host of community projects.

Rachel Clare - Crying Out Loud As Artistic Director of Crying Out Loud, one of the leading producers

for high-quality UK circus, Rachel is responsible for developing partnerships in the UK and Europe and supporting both indoor and outdoor work.

Ray Lee - Independent ArtistAn award-winning sound artist and composer that bridges the gap

between sound, visual and digital art, Ray’s work has been presented all over the world. Ray makes contemporary music accessible and engaging for a wide audience and has received significant support from the British Council - a sure sign of his influence in the arts sector.

Robby Graham – Southpaw Dance Company One of outdoor arts leading choreographers, Newcastle-based Robby

has created several successful outdoor projects that have toured widely and continues to develop more works. Robby’s talents haven’t gone unnoticed: he won the Kevin Spacey Foundation Artists Choice Award in 2016 and choreographed the National Theatre Angels in America.

Roger Hartley – Bureau of Silly Ideas One of the outdoor arts companies to receive support from Arts

Council through the National Portfolio, Roger and the BOSI team have created their own unique brand of inspired theatrical silliness.

Rosie Strang – Articulture Rosie is one of the key players in Wales’ outdoor sector. Through her

work and that of the rest of the the team at Articulture things are looking brighter than ever for this ever-growing sector.

Rowan Hoban & Sarah Bird - Wild Rumpus Wild Rumpus work from the Whirligig a rural creation space

and woodland office in Cheshire. The team produce Just So Festival, one of the top family-friendly greenfield festivals in the UK and the Northen Festivals Network. Their talents haven’t gone unnoticed; they’re about to take Just So Festival to New Zealand.

Sarah Trist - Independent Agent An experienced agent and producer Sarah represents several

outdoor dance companies, bridging the gap between indoor and outdoor touring.

Ajay Chhabra & Simmy Gupta – Nutkhut Nutkhut has been making outdoor work for many years. The

combination of Simmy’s choreography with Ajay’s flair for the theatrical has resulted in shows that make use of all the senses and stay true to the company’s roots.

Simon Chatterton - 101 /Independent Simon has been an influencer on the outdoor arts scene for many

years as a producer, promoter and strategic practitioner. He is the tenacious and passionate visionary behind the creation centre 101 in Newbury which has already supported the development of numerous new outdoor works.

Steve Eggleton – Photographer You might not know his name, but you’ll have seen his work. Steve

Eggleton travels up and down the country photographing outdoor events and festivals. His photos feature in publications and brochures. He will have seen as many outdoor arts shows as any festival director on this list.

Sue Hill – WildworksWildworks remains one of the UK’s most celebrated outdoor

companies and this is down to the work of the much missed Bill and Sue’s unstoppable interest for the role of culture and art in building and sustaining communities.

Tanya Peters & Andrew Comben - Brighton Festival As the Senior Producer (with responsibility for outdoor

programming) and Artistic Director (respectively) of Brighton Festival Tanya and Andrew are certainly in a position of influence. One of the largest festivals in the UK, Brighton Festival isn’t afraid to take risks with its programme of new commissions, premieres and daring work.

Vicki Amedume – Upswing Since 1997, Vicki has performed and created aerial and circus based

work that has been performed in the UK and worldwide. She has worked across all spheres of circus from traditional touring tented circuses to large-scale outdoor spaces and intimate touring indoor theatre.

Danielle Marshall – Circulate London Danielle makes sure that outstanding high-quality performance can

be found in Outer London through her work with Circulate, a group of four London venues working together to present outstanding outdoor arts.

Jamie Ogilvie & Wendy Hesketh-Ogilvie - Wired Aerial Theatre

From the Higher Space in Liverpool, Wendy and Jamie have built one of the UK’s most pioneering companies, creating enduring work which has thrilled audiences across the world (recently in Chile). As the World Tipped is regarded as one of the finest large-scale shows to come out of the UK.

Annabel Carberry & Massi Rossetti – Lost in Translation Circus

Lost in Translation is a fast-rising, artist-led contemporary circus company blending high-level, dynamic circus skills within a character-driven theatrical context.

Liz Pugh & John Wassell - Walk the Plank Founders of Walk The Plank Liz and John have done everything
