El Solh, Karim General Manager, Alternative Energy Group SAL Lebanon

After Karim El Solh graduated in 2013, He decided to start his own solar business focusing on the PV-Diesel market in the MENA region. In cooperation with Alternative Energy, Inc. a California based solar integrator, He established their Middle East office in Lebanon. His business model focused on teaming-up with diesel generator manufacturers to offer solar as a supplementary power source to their existing and new clientele. In 2015, he successfully installed a 205 kWp PV-diesel system for one of the leading Diesel Genset manufacturers in the MENA region “Ghaddar Machinery”. After the success of this project, he teamed up with Ghadar Machinery to open their solar division to market this technology to their extensive sales network throughout the MENA region. To this date, he is considered one of the leading solar companies in Lebanon where he has completed several commercial sized project in Lebanon. His next step is expanding in Africa where he has signed multiple commercial scale projects.

Ayoub, Marc Research Assistant, American University of Beirut (AUB) - Issam Fares Institute (IFI) Lebanon

Before joining IFI’s Energy Policy and Security (EPS) program at AUB, Marc Ayoub started his career in the O&G Industry as a project engineer at Petroserv SAL, managing the acquisition phase of the CedarsOil Lebanon’s neoBASIN Project over the past 4 years to assess the country’s Onshore O&G prospectivity through an Airborne geophysical survey. Marc holds a Master’s degree (Petroleum Focus) as well as a BS Degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Balamand. He also holds a BS in Chemistry from the Lebanese University. While fulfilling his undergraduate studies, he interned at Petrofac Int. limited in UAE, where he gained technical knowledge and skills. Despite having a background in the Oil industry, Marc is a firm believer in the capacity of Renewable Energy in building a cleaner, healthier, diversified and sustainable future for the coming generations.

Fayssal, Firas

Shareholder and Project Manager, C&F and Partners Lebanon

Firas has an MSc in Mechanical Engineering (2005) from the Lebanese University and ME in Construction Management and Construction Laws (2008) from Hult University and Renewable Energies (2018) from the Saint Joseph University in Beirut – Lebanon. He is presently the Managing Director of C&F and Partners, an engineering firm specialized in construction and energy management. He is LEED AP+ certified as well as PMP and Chartered Surveyor accredited and Certified trainer. He also taken Energy Management courses with Euromoney and is a certified professional planning. With a record of accomplishment of 15 years of experience, Mr. Fayssal is an engineering manager, consultant, trainer, entrepreneur and expert in the fields of energy and engineering management. He is currently pursuing a PhD in engineering.

El Banna, Salim

An energy professional for almost a decade now, Salim El Banna was involved in the production end of the energy industry managing assembly plants for electricity generators, and for the last 5 years, he shifted to working on key and pioneering projects covering Utility, Smart Metering and Renewable Energy in Lebanon and the MENA region. His educational background as a mechanical engineer with an MBA degree allows him to address these projects and the industry as a whole from both technical and commercial aspects. Additionally, his various responsibilities from tendering to procurement and general management has shaped his understanding of the business and for the increasing need for specialized energy professionals that can steer towards higher energy self-dependence, added to that the necessity to develop national and international strategies and policies that aid such towards such a transformation.

Jaber, Sara

Senior Sustainability Engineer- EcoConsulting

Lebanon

Sara Jaber is a Senior Sustainability Engineer at EcoConsulting since 2011 working on BREEAM and LEED assessments, as well as other eco-building services including thermal modelling. She has been involved in over 40 projects in Lebanon and abroad ranging from small residential houses to large developments, comprising BREEAM Excellent and LEED Gold assessments. Sara holds a MEng in Applied Energy and a BEng of Mechanical Engineering from the American University of Beirut. She is also a LEED Accredited Professional and a Certified Energy Manager. Sara participates as a Group Coordinator (for Indoor Environmental Quality) in the Technical Committee for the development of the standard for Building Environmental Performance with the Lebanese Standards Institution (LIBNOR). Sara has been a lecturer on various workshops with EcoConsulting, including the “Eco-Building & LEED Green Associate Training” series of seminars since 2013. She was also a speaker at the Built It Green Lebanon conference in 2015 to present the Criteria for Green Buildings in Lebanon.

Sleiman, Mohammad PhD Candidate/ Power Electronics Specialist- École de Technologie Supérieure/ SUEZ Water Technologies & Solutions Canada

Mohammad Sleiman was born in Lebanon in 1989. He received the B.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering from the Faculty of Engineering (III), Lebanese University, Beirut, in 2011, and the M.Sc. degree in Renewable Energy from the Doctoral School of Science and Technology, Lebanese University, Beirut, and the Faculty of Engineering-ESIB, Saint Joseph University, Beirut, in 2012. He is currently working toward the Ph.D. degree at the École de Technologie Supérieure (ÉTS), Montreal, QC, Canada. His research interests include renewable energy conversion systems, modular multilevel converters, model predictive control for power electronics converters, and electric power quality. Mohammad is the Chapter Chair of IEEE PELS Montreal. He is an active member of the IEEE since 2013.

Rizkallah, Toufic

Energy Consultant and Partner/ Senior Non-key Energy Expert- ENEXYS/GIZ Lebanon

Toufic Rizkallah holds a bachelor degree in mechanical engineering from the American University of Beirut and a CEM® and CMVP® Certification from the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE). He is a founding member of the AEE Lebanon Chapter and a member of the World Energy Council (WEC) Lebanon National Committee. He has nine years of experience in contracting and 4 years in the energy sector in both the private and public sectors. He is currently self-employed and works as an energy and sustainability consultant, providing services to several consulting firms such as Enexys® and GIZ. He has conducted more than 30 Level 2 and 3 ASHRAE Energy Audits and executed 6 Major Energy Efficiency Projects. He is proud to have contributed to the development of a Regional Strategy on EE and RE for municipalities across the Mediterranean. Now he is working closely with GIZ and the Directorate for Vocational and Technical Education (DGVTE) in Lebanon, providing them with technical assistance to establish a Sector Skills Council and develop a framework and curriculum for a BT in renewable energy.

Melhem, Fadi Electrical Laboratory Unit Head- Industrial Research Institute Lebanon

Dr. Melhem holds the electrical and electronic engineering diploma from Conservatoire National des Arts et des Métiers, Paris, France, in 2013. In 2014, he got his master research degree in renewable energy from Saint-Joseph University, Lebanon. In 2018, he received his Ph.D. in engineering science from Université Bourgogne Franche-Comté, Belfort, France. He is currently Electrical Laboratory Unit Head at Industrial Research Institute (IRI), Lebanon. He is a member of the Order of Engineers and Architects (OEA) in Beirut and member of the Association Nationale des Docteurs (ANDès) in France. Dr. MELHEM has authored many papers published in scientific journals and has participated in international conferences as a speaker concerning the optimization on renewable energy systems and energy management. His current research interests include the future electrical smart grids, energy efficiency, energy storage, electric vehicles. He is also certified trainer of solar photovoltaic system.

K. Annan, Rim Solar Engineer- Jubaili Bros Lebanon

Rim graduated in 2014 with engineering Masters in the HVAC & renewable energy fields. She started working directly under the title of renewable energy engineer after her graduation. She has designed, implemented and commissioned more than 15 Projects (Solar Photovoltaic Hybrid Power Plant) with a total capacity above 750 KW in addition to off grid (back up and pumping system) and PV street Lighting Projects all across Lebanon. She is now a solar engineer with Jubaili bros under the business development department, In addition to designing and implementing projects, She is the technical solar support for the sales team, the after sales and the procurement teams in Lebanon & the MENA region. She has high communication skills that allows her spreading the knowledge of the renewable energy field in Lebanon. She conducted a training for more than 8 Consultancies firm for the design of solar hybrid systems. With the high leadership skills, she achieved a conflict resolution training that will allow her to solve any faced problem with the suitable solution. She will continues her masters of research in the renewable & sustainability sector.

Al Kaaki, Omar

Electrical QS Specialist- KVA sal

Lebanon

Omar Al Kaaki is an Electrical QS Engineer at KVA, the electric distribution service provider in Lebanon (Beirut and Bekaa areas). He handles projects related to MV/LV substations, reinforcement of electric networks, and installation of customers' meters. In 2012, Omar graduated from Rafik Hariri University, with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, and in 2016, he completed a Master’s of Science in Electrical Engineering from the Lebanese International University. He has published and presented 6 peer-reviewed research papers in the fields of Renewable Energy and Smart Grids. He is a member of the Order of Engineers and Architects, IEEE, IEEE Smart Grid Community, and RHU Alumni Association.

Beucler, Irène

Energy Consultant- Lebanese Center for Energy Conservation (LCEC)

Irène is a motivated young professional who has been working in the energy field for the past six years, in France and in Lebanon. She started her career as a business consultant in Europe and specialized in the energy sector at ENGIE (previously GDF-Suez) and within a French ESCO “Economies d’Energie SAS”. She moved to Lebanon in 2015 and joined the United Nations Development Program as a consultant in Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy projects. She then joined the LCEC team as an energy consultant working on Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy projects such as: the development of Energy Service Companies in Lebanon, the introduction of Minimum Energy Performance Standards, the setting-up of an Energy Savings Program and Solar PV projects. Irène graduated from the Sorbonne University in Paris with a Master’s Degree in Economics. She is a Certified Energy Manager (CEM) since 2017. She also teaches a class to Bachelor students at University Saint Joseph of Beirut entitled “energy economics”. On a personal level, she is involved in various activities promoting a greener economy and society.

Mesrobian, Patil Environmental Specialist- Lebanese Center for Energy Conservation (LCEC) Lebanon

Patil is an environmental specialist with a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Health and a Public Health from AUB and is currently pursuing her Master’s Degree in Energy Studies. She is handling the technical evaluation of the environmental project proposals under the Lebanese Environmental Action (LEA) as part of the Technical Support Unit to the Central Bank of Lebanon. In addition, as part of LCEC’s activities with international partners, Patil is the Programmes Development Officer engaged in European projects in the field of energy efficiency and renewable energy that requires collaborations with public and private stakeholders and authorities.

Irany- Reem Energy Engineer- Lebanese Center for Energy Conservation (LCEC) Lebanon

Reem holds a Bachelor Degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the American University of Beirut (AUB). After graduation, she explored the lighting industry and the latest advancements in the field to design energy efficient solutions for different types of projects. Aspiring to broaden her expertise in the energy field and to contribute in promoting renewable energy and energy efficiency, Reem moved to the Lebanese Center for Energy Conservation (LCEC) in October 2014. She was part of the technical support unit to the Central Bank of Lebanon in charge of the technical evaluation of green projects under NEEREA financing mechanism. She also assisted in the development of a solar thermal ordinance for local authorities under MED-DESIRE European Project. Reem was heavily involved in the preparation of tender documents related to grid-scale solar PV projects under Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). She is currently leading on the implementation of solar PV projects in public buildings including tendering, evaluation, supervision, testing and commissioning and reporting. Part of her work is also the supervision of solar pumping and solar street lighting projects throughout Lebanon.

Hijazi, Jamil Volunteer/Student- Lebanese Oil and Gas Initiative/ University of Dundee Scotland, United Kingdom

Jamil Hijazi is an Energy Studies graduate with a specialization in Oil and Gas Economics from the University of Dundee Centre for Energy, Petroleum, Mineral Law and Policy (CEPMLP). He is finishing his second master’s in International Mineral Resources Management at CEPMLP to further specialize as an Extractives industry specialist. Jamil has worked in both the private and public sector of the energy domain. He started working as industrial operator for a refined fuel oil trader in the UAE. He gained insights on the impact of data information and digitalization on decision making during his time working as an inside sales energy trainee with IHS Markit. Jamil has contributed an LNG Economics research study for the Economics and Finance Department for the Lebanese Petroleum Administration (LPA). The Latter study focused on the LNG Value Chain, Pricing, Import and Export options, a legal framework to supplement existing petroleum laws. To this day Jamil remains an advocate and an overseas volunteer for the Lebanese Oil and Gas Initiative; where he aims to work with the team to manage expectations of the people and promote a knowledge sharing culture to build the capacity for all citizens in Lebanon.

Njeim, Marc Natural Resources Consultant- Lecturer at USEK

Lebanon

Marc Njeim is a Natural Resources Consultant in Lebanon, handling multiple projects in the O&G and renewable energy sectors. He is also a Lecturer of Petroleum Law and Economics at the Holy Spirit University of Kaslik (USEK). He holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Washington State University and a LLM in Energy and Natural Resources from Queen Mary University of London. He has 10 years in global field operations and led to the successful delivery of over 100 wells across the world. The synergy of his engineering and legal background allows him to balance between the realm of energy regulation and technical suitability. Marc is a member of the Association of International Petroleum Negotiator (AIPN), Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE).

Comaty, Farid

Senior Consultant- Navigant

Germany

Farid Comaty is a Senior Consultant at Navigant. He served private and public clients in Europe and the Middle east, held several stakeholder workshops and immersed himself in various interdisciplinary topics of the energy transition, focusing on power systems and buildings. He has advised the European Commission, German government and several utilities on the needed strategies to accelerate the energy transition and reap the benefits from smart grid investments. He presented at the BEF the results of a two-year project on accelerating energy efficiency in the building sector of Lebanon, Jordan and Egypt. He is part of the core team who will continue working in the next two years on the implementation of the policy recommendations. Farid holds a MSc. in Energy Science and Technology from ETH Zurich and worked six months in research. He has valuable modelling experience of power systems focused on the integration of high-shares of renewable energies. Prior to his master, he studied Mechanical Engineering at McGill University in Montreal. Farid is a native French and Arabic speaker and speaks fluently English and German.

Saad, Serge

Maintenance Engineer/ Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Design Engineer- OGERO/ Energy Independence Solutions Lebanon

Serge Saad is a Mechanical engineer graduate from NDU with emphasis on renewable energy and energy efficiency. In his 3rd year, he started an internship at the Lebanese Solar Energy Society (LSES), where he grasped hands on experience in the renewable energy field in Lebanon. Through his internship he worked on transforming the idea of Lebanon hosting a solar car challenge, he was so motivated by this challenge that his senior project at the university was the first solar racecar fit to the world solar challenge regulations. After his internship, he stayed with LSES as the administrator where he was in charge of the ECOtruck an educational tool visiting schools and spreading knowledge about solar energy. In addition, Serge handled the public relations of LSES and represented it in multiple conference and exhibitions such as IBEF and project Lebanon. After his diploma, he started working with energy independence solutions as a freelance project engineer, where he designed solar systems and optimization projects. Last year, in March, Serge participated in the first Urbhackathon in Lebanon, his team came second and they won a two-month incubation with Berytech. Starting January 2018, Serge is the data center cooling, maintenance engineer at OGERO.

Tannoury, Yara

Yara is an electrical engineer who has been working in the power sector for the last 5 years. Working on field in the O&M department of a distribution service provider and then taking on a role as a technical consultant in the thermal and renewable power generation has given Yara a broad knowledge of the energy sector with all its challenges and advancements. As a member of IEEE and PMI and with a certificate in business strategy and another in the fundamentals of artificial intelligence, Yara hopes to utilize this knowledge, experience and network of experts to contribute to a strategic and innovative plan for the future of energy in Lebanon.
