It started with $100…

Maria was the first person in her family to graduate from high school.

Her family was so proud they came up with enough money to pay for one class at Washtenaw Community College.

However, she couldn’t afford to pay for the book.

Maria went to talk to Edwina Jarrett, a WCC Counselor.

Edwina was able to give her $100 to buy the textbook.

This made all the difference.

Maria earned her Associate’s degree in two years.

This year, she will earn her Bachelor’s degree in Art History.

She has been to France and Italy and plans to continue her studies by applying to a Master’s program in Europe.

The Counselors at WCC started a fund several years ago, paid for through their own contributions, to help students like Maria whom they see every day.

The WCC Foundation has been providing a grant to this fund each year for the past six years to help even more students like Maria.
