To: Burningtree Family
As most of you know, Billy Murphy, my
son-in-law has made a decision to
change his future career path. I feel
this took a lot of courage and he will
be successful in whatever it is he de-
cides to pursue. Billy has put in many
hours and has made many important
improvements to our club. In his place,
we have hired Laura Adamsky, who
comes to us with an outstanding work
history and education. As we move
forward, Laura will welcome your help
in making our Club the Best we can
be. In order to be the best value for
our members, we will need to host Golf
Outings and Clubhouse Events. As
members, you can help in our financial
condition by inviting New or Old Mem-
bers to be part of Burningtree Country
Club. This will help with golf course
improvements and other member
amenities. We will continue our Win/Win
Program until we reach 425 mem-bers.
(Golf and Social). Thank you to all of you
for continuing to support Burningtree.
Many thanks to each Member

MGA NEWS
The October skills challenge was putting across the prac-
tice green into squares for points. There were three tied with
9 points. The Putt-off ended with Gary Thompson winning first
place for $94, and Mack Murphy taking second for $62.
The raffle jackpot, $210, was won by Gary Thompson. There
was extra in the jackpot due to carry over from the rainout in
July and prize money from the Scramble (no skins).
Keith Heidecker mentioned the next and final event of the
year will be the Christmas Dinner on December 8 (the sec-
ond Thursday). We are planning to have steak and free
range chicken. It has been a big hit the last couple of years.
MGA members are free and your quest will be charged, so
we are hoping for a big turnout for this event. It will also be a
Toys for Tots Campaign event, and we should have a US Ma-
rine on hand for the party. Remember to bring new, un-
wrapped gifts.
The next MGA meeting will be in March and the current slate
of officers have agreed to continue in 2017 with Gary
Thompson running the skills competitions.

Book Club
Nine of us met the 2nd Thurs. night in Oct. to discuss both
BETWEEN BLACK AND WHITE and BROOKLYN. In November
we will discuss ALL THE GOVERNOR'S MEN by Mountain Brook
author Katherine Clark. The late Pat Conroy wrote the fore-
word for this book. It was his final one to write. He was her
biggest cheerleader and recruited her to Story River Books,
the University of South Carolina's Press imprint which he
served as editor-at-large. He toured in support of her books.
This is her second book. She has committed to two more
books to be published this fall and next Spring. This is a fic-
tional reimagining of Alabama Governor George Wallace's
final campaign.
We invite any interested book readers to join us at 6 in the
PDR room in the main dining room on November 10th. Call
in your reservation today.

Craig's style of instruction/coaching is based on The
Golfing Machine which is driven on teaching a player the
proper pivot, ball position and getting the club on plane.
He also believes balance and rhythm are imperative in
the golf swing to produce consistent impact alignments.
He does not teach one single method rather evaluates a
players body and physical makeup to build a swinging
motion suitable for each golfer. A player can not do what
they are physically unable to do.
Contact Bocking Golf today to learn how you can
improve your stroke pattern. The Academy at Burningtree

What's in My Toolbox - Part 2 Today's tool that travels around with me isn't actually kept in my toolbox. It's too big. I actually keep it in the bed of my cart,
behind my toolbox. So this episode of what's behind my toolbox is.....a soil profile sampler. As my studies and background is
in agronomy, my focus and process revolves around the soil. Remember Agronomy = the science of soil management and
crop production (turfgrass being the crop). So everything starts with the soil, and this tool allows me to view the soil.
As it's title implies, this tool allows me to sample the soil profile. Basically, I can pull out a skinny plug and examine the soil.
I use this tool very often throughout the year for varying reasons. The reason I am posting about this tool now is because I
have been using it very often as of late. With this tool, I can view any layering, the thatch layer, condition of the soil, and
more. One way this tool is useful is it allows me to see root depth and quality. I can examine roots to determine if they are
healthy, new growth, old growth, length, whether they are pushing or stunting, and help diagnose fungi or nematode
concerns. I am constantly (at least weekly) checking root depth and quality throughout the year (it does change due to
multiple variables). Another purpose for this tool is to check moisture in the soil. There is actually a tool that many courses
use
to read soil moisture, but as we don't have one, I can use this to at least give me an idea of moisture content in the soil. This
time of year is when it can be handy to have one for soil moisture checking. As you know, we are in a drought. We continue
to water the course as much as we can, but obviously everything is drying out with no rain, low humidity, and windy
conditions. We are reaching a concerning point of low moisture (I may post on that another day), but I am monitoring
different areas using this tool. You may have noticed odd colored patches in odd shapes on the greens in the last few
weeks. Using this tool, I can identify them as dry areas (which may be obvious now, but as they first appeared were not so
obvious). As no good stretch of rain is still in sight, I am using this profiler to check the soil and decide we need to do
extra hand watering or adjust irrigation heads/schedules. The picture below is of two samples taken from the same green
and about five feet apart. You can see how one profile has adequate moisture (the darker color) and one is bone dry
(the lighter color).
So that is why I am using this tool daily right now. And I am still monitoring roots (especially on the new sod) as we are trying
to get one last push and store some carbohydrates for winter. If you are out on a green and you notice an outline of a small
rectangle in the surface, you'll know this tool and I were there recently.
