Ask any member of the UNA faculty, staff, or administration, and they’ll tell you – some days in higher education are tough. We have to operate in an environment that features a host of new economic, social, and political pressures. We have to fi nd ways to do more with less. We have to make hard decisions. But the tough days pale in comparison to the great days – the ones that allow us to see our students excelling, our programs fl ourishing, and our campus growing.

At the University of North Alabama, we are experiencing lots of great days. In the fall of 2016, our offi cial student headcount was 7,492 students, the largest total enrollment in the school’s 186-year history and a 5.8 percent increase over the previous year. UNA’s freshmen cohort also broke records. This fall we welcomed 1,177 new freshman students, a 1.6 percent increase over fall 2015’s cohort number and a 26.4 percent increase over fall 2014. And we have more students living on campus than ever before.

To alleviate some of the growing pains associated with this enrollment increase, we’ll soon be adding an additional 400 parking spots to campus off of Circular Drive. Demolition of Floyd Hall is slated to begin in early 2017. Once the demolition is complete, construction will begin on Laura M. Harrison Hall, which will house the Anderson College of Nursing. At that same time, our Human Environmental Sciences program will soon be acclimating to its new home, a beautiful historical building in downtown Florence.

Our academic programs are also experiencing growth. The College of Business saw record enrollment in its MBA program during the fall 2016 semester. The College of Arts and Sciences is now offering its second graduate degree in English, an M.A. in Writing. And we continue to be proud of our growing list of program accreditations. These accreditations are labor-intensive undertakings and underscore our faculty’s commitment to academic excellence.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

UNA is reaching out to the military and veteran community as never before. Our recently completed Military and Veteran Services Center is now open and staffed in the Guillot University Center. In October, the University received the Pro Patria Award, which is presented annually by a state affi liate of the U.S. Department of Defense to institutions that have demonstrated the greatest support of National Guard and Reserve employees. In addition, UNA’s own Lion Battal ion (ROTC) was awarded the 2016 “Top Program” award in our peer group of institutions by the 6th Brigade, United States Army Cadet Command. We could not be prouder of the work being done by our cadets under the leadership of LTC W. Cochran Pruett and his faculty and staff.

Our comprehensive campaign, “Build the Pride”, has seen much success in these early months. We’ve already raised $26 million on our way to an overall goal of $35 million, and we hope to keep this momentum going.

This brings us to you! We could not reach these heights without you or the many other names listed in this report. The ways you’ve partnered with us over the past year show that these accomplishments aren’t accidental. They are the result of friends and alumni joining with us to make a difference in the future of our university.

VICE PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Dearest UNA Family and Friends,

This has certainly been a year of change within the Offi ce of University Advancement, and it is due to your unwavering faith and funding that the University of North Alabama is able to venture into this new era of growth and innovation. I would fi rst like to commend Dr. Dan Hendricks for his service to UNA and hard work starting off this fi scal year, prior to his retirement last spring. Additionally, I wish to recognize Carol Lyles for her 18 years supporting UNA through the role of Alumni Director. She will certainly be missed upon her retirement this December.

As a UNA graduate, I am overjoyed to have been given an opportunity to return to the place from which several of my fondest memories were made. I could not be more honored or privileged to give back to the school that in many ways is responsible for molding me into the person I am today. I now fi nd myself surrounded by a team of individuals who are passionate about this university and dedicated to ensuring UNA has the fi nancial means to pursue its goals. One of our top priorities within the Offi ce of Advancement this year, and always, is to be mindful stewards of the gifts we receive. We have sought out creative and resourceful ways to keep our cost of operating and other expenditures as low as possible so that your donations may achieve their greatest potential effect on this excellent university.

One of the most exciting ventures this year has been the public launch of UNA’s fi rst offi cial comprehensive campaign. On Tuesday, March 22, 2016, UNA hosted the “Build the Pride” campaign kick-off gala at the Marriott Shoals Conference Center in Florence, Alabama. Following nearly two and a half years of a silent phase, we were eager to announce that over $25,489,400 had been incurred. After the gala, we hoped to keep the momentum rolling into the public phase and are pleased to fi nd that your support is as strong as ever! Our campaign goal is to reach 35 million dollars. At the close of our 2015-16 fi scal year, we have raised close to $27 million, through both the silent and public phases of the campaign.

Gifts and pledges for the 2015-16 year totaled over $7,558,000, having been made by 3,083 donors collectively. The President’s Cabinet (unrestricted gifts

of $1,000 and more) was comprised of 102 members, while alumni giving had a

4.90 percent participation rate. Additionally, the annual UNA Derby Day event brought in over $66,000 for the unrestricted fund.

The UNA Foundation also grew its total assets under management from $32.8 million in 2015 to $36.8 million. With scholarships being at the core of our purpose, we are excited to have added 15 new endowments, along with a fi nalized gift from a prior pledge. This brings our total endowment pledges and gifts to exactly $1,018,403 for the fi scal year.

In the years since my time as a UNA student, a lot has changed concerning the size and appearance of our campus. Despite the ever evolving nature of this institution, one thing remains constant: the people that make up our beloved UNA community are consistently kind, supportive, and altogether proud to be a part of the magic.

As I refl ect, my recent hire as VP doesn’t serve as much of a ‘return,’ because I realize that once you join this family, you’re in it for life. Our alumni and friends not only support each other in their endeavors, but also take great pride in the role they play to ensure the success of each new generation of students. No matter where life takes us, what a blessing it is to know we always have a home waiting for us at the University of North Alabama.

UNA is fortunate to be made up of such a vibrant, diverse family, and we appreciate each and every one of you. As members of this community, there is no better time than the present to be engaged with UNA and the endeavors being supported by our Build the Pride Campaign. The future of UNA is as bright as ever, and I am anxious to witness as it unfolds. We sincerely thank you for your generous contributions and wish you all the best in the upcoming year!

ISBELL SCHOLARSDR. RAYMOND ISBELL, a native of Colbert County and a 1953 graduate of UNA, joined the faculty as an associate professor of chemistry in 1965. In 1973, he was named head of the department of chemistry and served in that capacity until he retired in 1997. He then donated a year of service to his department to establish a scholarship at the University. Many employees inspired by Dr. Isbell’s generous act have since volunteered to remain in their job after retirement to establish additional educational endowments.

OUR NEWESTISBELL SCHOLARS

Dr. Janice Myhan ’81 began her service as an

Isbell Scholar in 2016. She was hired at UNA in 1985

to teach in the Department of Elementary Education.

Through her service as an Isbell Scholar, she has

established the Janice Gargis Myhan Endowed Scholarship.

This scholarship will be used to support students majoring

in Elementary Education.

Dr. Paul Kittle began his service as an Isbell

Scholar in 2015. He was hired at UNA to teach in the Biology Department

in 1983 and served as the Department Chair from

1992 – 2014. Through his service as an Isbell Scholar, he has established the Paul D. Kittle Endowed Scholarship.

This scholarship will be used to support students

majoring in Biology.

Dr. Kerry Gatlin began his service as an Isbell Scholar in

2016. He was hired in 1987 to teach in the Department of Management and Marketing. In 2001, he began his service

as Interim Dean for the College of Business and then served as the Dean from 2003 – 2013. Dr.

Gatlin’s service as an Isbell Scholar will provide for two

endowments that will benefi t the College of Business: The John and Gladys Gatlin Endowed

Scholarship and the Gatlin Endowment for Innovation.

HOW A GIFT ANNUITY WORKSA gift annuity is a simple contractual agreement between you and a charity in which you give money or assets in exchange for the organization’s promise to provide you, the annuitant, with fixed payments each year for your lifetime.

WHAT YOU CAN ACCOMPLISHBy establishing a charitable gift annuity, you can accomplish two things: 1. You receive fixed payments for yourself or yourself and another individual 2. After your lifetime, the remaining amount supports your chosen charity.

SAVINGS YOU CAN EXPECT TO ACHIEVEYour donation is divided into two parts: (1) the amount of the donation attributable to the gift portion and (2) the amount of the donation attributable to your annuity payments.

A portion of each payment you receive is considered a nontaxable return of your contribution, from the start of your payments until you reach your estimated life expectancy. This tax-free amount further increases your after-tax dollars available for whatever you choose, such as spending or investing.

You are entitled to a charitable income-tax deduction for the gift portion of your contribution – usually between 30 and 50 percent of the value of the gift, assuming you itemize your deductions.

In addition to the payments and the deduction you receive, a gift annuity funded with appreciated property has these advantages:

1. The capital gain allocated to the gift portion completely avoids the capital-gains tax. 2. In most cases, the portion of the taxable capital gain can be spread over your life expectancy.
