Great tune. Great city. Got my walking / exercise in. Ate great bar-beque. But I digress. I really had hoped that the 2015 Conference and Trade Show was going to the best ever, and I will tell you that in many ways it totally lived up to my hopes……right up until Saturday, anyway. PhyllisandKimdidamagnifi-centjobinorganizingaterrifickickoff gathering at Flint Hydraulics and then Graceland, fol-lowed on Thursday and Friday by some world class train-ing sessions and speakers, a fantastic spouses program (who knew we had all that artistic talent in our midst?), and of course our trade show is second to none when it comes to organizationandflow(yes,moredisplayerswouldbegood).Then we capped things off on Friday night with our banquet thatincludedauctioningoffthespousespaintingstofinalizea generous contribution to St. Jude Children’s Hospital. Se-riously folks, when it comes to that list, I just can’t imagine we could have done any better. The part of the program that just didn’t go the way we anticipated was the Saturday training programs. We listened to several of you who suggested bringing back the Saturday

part of the conference, to be used as training sessions for members who couldn’t travel until the end of the week, or who wanted to bring in staff members for one day. That part oftheoverallprogramwas,quitefrankly,amajorflop.Andthepart thefloppedwas that less than50%of thepeoplewho signed up to be there didn’t attend. Sonowwe’reback to trying tofigureoutwhat todoin Kansas City, and your board of directors is looking for some feedback. Do we try the Saturday training one more time?Sidebar: Iwill tell you that the really difficult partfor me (regarding Saturday) was that for all of those people who signed up to attend Saturday, the association paid for lunch…..so we paid for several meals that literally went to waste.Also, the trainingwas specificallydesigned for ananticipated audience of several sales people, at a consider-able expense, and yet we ended up far short of the overall committed number and there were very few counter sales people in attendance. Not cool. Do we keep Saturday as part of the program, but try something different? Since I hate to end my article on a sour note, I’m going backtowhereIstarted–reflectingonthefactthatoverall,we did good; and if you weren’t there to enjoy and absorb it all, well, you missed out on another great conference and trade show. As always, we’re looking for feedback…..don’t be shy.

Timeisflyingbyagainasweenterinto2015.WehitthefloorsrunninguponourreturnfromMemphis.Lotsoflooseends to tie up with the hotel and convention center and Kim posted pictures of our conference and trade show on our FaceBook page. We had a new task this year and that was contactingallthegreatpeoplethatdonatedtoourfirstyearof raising money for St. Jude!!! It turned out amazing and we raised $12,300 for the well-deserving children at St. Jude.

We are already working on our 2016 conference and trade show to be held in Kansas City next year. The dates are January 20-23, 2016 at the Sheraton Kansas City Hotel at Crown Center. If you have any ideas or suggestions for training, speakers or tours that we could be working on please contact me at phyllis@ntpda.com.

Also, mark your calendars for our Summer Board Meeting

to be held in Sioux Falls, July 16-18 at the Holiday Inn. We are currently working on the itinerary and will get the information to you in the very near future. We would love for you to join us! Kim has been working on the Scholarships and we will be announcing those recipients in the next quarterly publication of the Bulletin.

Happy Retirement! Ralph Seymour retired at the end of March after spending the last thirty years at Sparex Inc. Ralph and his wife Kathleen started Sparex Inc. in the garage of their home in Aurora, in 1985. After graduating from Kent State, Ralph worked as a Manufacturing Engineer, and eventually as a Division General Manager, for ABS Industries, in Ashtabula, OH. In 1977 Ralph accepted a position as Executive Vice President of the Highland Group, in Cleveland Oh, a company that manufactured aftermarket Automotive and Agricultural parts. Highland was a supplier to Massey Ferguson, Tisco, and many other Agricultural manufactures and WDs. An opportunity arose in the mid 1980’s to work with Sparex Ltd. in England, a Worldwide supplier of Agricultural parts and in 1985 Sparex Inc. was born. Sparex Inc. was purchased by a Major OEM in 2012, and continues to expand in the US Market. On the personal side, Ralph and Kathleen, are looking forward to retirement and plan to spend time visiting many of the friends they have worked with over the past 30 years. Their two children, Meredith and Jonathan will remain at Sparex as part of the management team.

New Member Benefit I came back from Memphis and on Monday afternoon I ordered a few Cabela’s gift cards as door prizes for our upcoming sales meetings. I went on the NTPDA site and downloaded the interactive order form. well. So..I’m going to “sweeten the pot” as the saying goes. Send

pertains to the industry. Maybe a suggestion that will help your

The world population is the total number of living hu-mansonearthandinthelastseveralyearsthefigureof7billion has been bantered about. The United Nations De-partment of Economic and Social Affairs, Population Di-vision estimated that as of 2010 the world population was 6.916 billion people. The United Nations Population Fund claims this milestone was reached on October 31, 2011. The United States Census Bureau estimates that the world population exceeded 7 billion on March 12, 2012. The me-dian age of the world’s population was estimated to be 29.7 years in 2014. Opinions vary, but most conclude that the world popu-lation has experienced continuous growth since the end of the Great Famine and the Black Death in 1350, when it was near 370 million. Although total number and growth rate estimates differ greatly, many question the sustainability of further world population growth considering the growing pressures on the environment, energy resources, and global food supplies. Poverty and hunger go hand in hand. World govern-ments must work together to minimize the socioeconomic limitations imposed by the distribution of natural resources, energy, and available manpower. By 2030 China is estimated to have 1 billion citizens in their middle class alone according to Margaret Zeigler of the Global Harvest Initiative. Such demographic shifts amongst class and geography will stress an already strained world food supply. Through breeding and modern techniques farmers have access to seed that can enable better harvests, which hope-fully results in more people enjoying a healthy diet rich in the necessary nutrients. Two vegetable seeds in the U.S. are genetically modi-fiedforspecificbenefits -squash, to resistcertainvirusesthat can destroy the crop, and sweet corn, which enables farmers to more efficiently manage weeds and pesticideuse.Papayawassuccessfullygeneticallymodifiedtowardoff a virus that threatened to devastate overall papaya pro-duction. Wheat, corn and sorghum are staple crops used to make flour,bread,pasta,cerealand tortillasandarealso fed tolivestock. Traditional breeding techniques have developed many locally adapted wheat varieties and corn and sorghum hybrids that are now grown around the world. Protein-containing foods are important for good nutri-tion and maintenance of the body. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that annual meat production will need to double in order to feed 9 billion people in 2050. Genetically enhanced seed for feed grains like corn and soybeans, when harvested, contribute to the diet for animals such as pigs, cows and chickens.

Ambassador Kenneth M. Quinn, President of the World Food Prize Foundation stated in the last 50 years we have experienced an historical record increase in food production and decrease in world hunger, but with the current trends we have to be able to do it all over again! The only way to accomplish the challenge of feeding the world is to continually improve the genetic makeup of these seeds which enables them to be more toler-ant of nature’s cha l lenges such as drought, in-sect and an-imal pests, and plant diseases.

What’s The Real Cost? by Michael Libbie

Back in the day, long before I started our advertising agency, I sold advertising. I remember being turned away by more than one “gate-keeper” because I was not on “the preferred list” of vendors. I’ve always thought that’s a lousy way to do business and since we formed the agency we listen to any pitch. I’ve always thought that if we don’t we might be missing out on the “Magic Bullet” that will drive customers to our clients. So, that too is a tip for you. Don’t wave somebody off…they might have exactly what you are looking for. That being said you need to be careful. One of the things we do for our clients is listen to pitches for them. We recently heard a pitch about some online marketing. It went like this: “Our customers get 70,000 impressions each month and it’s only going to cost your client $500 each month.”

Sounds like a heck of a deal right? Less than a PENNY per impression! But then you do the math: 70,000 impressions, divide that by their stated “click through

rate” of .03 percent. That comes to 2.3 page views...before the industry standard conversion rate of 8%(Conversion rates mean converting a “looker” into a “buyer”) But, let’s just go with 2.3 clicks onto our client’s offer. The cost now comes to $217.39 to attract each new customer. Not bad if our client were selling $150,000 cars or legal work

that could amount to $200,000 in billable hours...but our client, in this case, has an average ticket price of $45. Marketing Tip #2: Impressions do not mean sales. They mean impressions like in, “Oh, I see that.” Getting the consumer to then DO SOMETHING and convert them to becoming a buyer is a whole different discussion.

Effective April 3, 2015 I will retire and hopefully in the coming years I can enjoy our kids and soon to be grandkids.
