THIS YEAR WE OPENED TEN 40K PLUS PODS FOR 300 KIDS - THANK YOU.
December 2012
What a year!
Who would have thought when the sun rose on the 1st of January 2012, that by the end of the year we would have...
• Opened 10 new 40K PLUS pods around Bangalore, and celebrated the 300th child being enrolled,• Sent the first 20 Australian students to India with our new 40K Globe social business,• Launched another new business, 40K ConsulLng, which works with emerging corporate leaders to derive new Shared Value
business opportuniLes; and• Seen our staff team grow from 3 to 16 in 2 offices across Sydney and Bangalore.
The last two years have been about rebuild. In 2011, we completely reinvented the way we went about bringing educaLon to primary-‐aged children in villages in India. There was a ton of research done, and we were hugely excited to launch the first 10 40K PLUS pods. Whilst they are not as good as we want them to be yet, we know how to improve them, and the community demand has amazed us. 2012 was about reinvenLng our organisaLonal structure. The GFC has taught us that no maYer how passionate our supporters are, when economic condiLons stagnate, philanthropy has to be the first thing to go off peoples’ discreLonary spending. We needed to come up with addiLonal income streams leveraging skills we’ve developed over the past 6 years to conLnue our growth and meet our ambiLous targets. 40K Globe and 40K ConsulLng are the new companies of the 40K family, and both are now showing amazing potenLal in their early stages. So, what’s the plan for 2013? We’ve done the work off the field: 2 years of rebuild. 2013 is about kicking some serious goals. We’re going to make sure that when the sun comes down at the end of next year, there will be 1000 children enrolled in 40K PLUS pods, and more than 100 young Aussies who have had a life-‐changing experience with the 40K Globe program. Thanks so much for your support, and have a wonderful Christmas and New Year!

Bring on 2013! We want to see 1000 kids enrolled in 40K PLUS pods
From our India Country Manager
12 months ago 40K PLUS was a 3-‐page document with no name. 12 months later, 40K PLUS pods are up and running. Recently, a worker from Yarapnahalli Bande requested a 40K PLUS pod in his village. We realised that a neighbouring village, who had a 40K PLUS pod of their own, had already spread the word.
The addiLon of android tablets in November 2012 gave a massive boost to the content quality of 40K PLUS. Imagine children, who have oaen never touched a computer, gebng access to the latest technology. Instead of walking into a 40K PLUS lesson to hear the teacher struggling with broken English, you are now greeted by the sound of English blaring from the tablets’ speakers and children giggling over driving the ‘Alphabet Car’ – an innovaLve game that teaches English, reading and spelling.
And this is just the beginning. Next year we are re-‐working our curriculum into a ‘Scout-‐style’ badge scheme, where children use a mix of tablet apps and pracLcal acLviLes to gain skill-‐based rewards like “The CounLng Superstar Badge,” which can then be sewn onto their bright red 40K PLUS t-‐shirts. Driving into a village to see a gang of children proudly sporLng 40K FoundaLon Australia t-‐shirts is enough to make anyone feel proud!
By far the greatest success of the year has been the overwhelming demand for 40K PLUS. During the recent opening of ChaglaYy PLUS pod in Bangalore, (despite having a strict limit of 30 children in each pod) over 40 children registered. Clear proof that 40K PLUS is needed by Indian villages.

The moment I saw the words Bob Thomas, educaLon and India in the same sentence I simply had to be involved.
India is a country dear to my heart, ever since travelling there for my TV show, 'An Aussie Goes Bolly' and Foxtel’s coverage of 2010’s Delhi Commonwealth Games.
Once I met the crew at 40K I realised that their passion for educaLon is second to none. Clary and his team’s dedicaLon to the cause is infecLous. You simply want to be involved and help in any way you can.
The fact that they somehow got me to run a half marathon shows their ability to sell an idea!
I hated every step of the Sydney Half Marathon! I won't lie... It was the hardest 2 hours, 16 minutes and 27 seconds of my life. I'll never do it again. BUT we raised some money that helped 40K to provide a PLUS pod to 30 kids. It made the physical pain worth it. The marathon was months ago and I'm sLll walking like I rode a horse for a year! I look forward to helping in whatever way I can moving forward... just NO more running guys! At 120kg I'm not built for it!

Thank you ‘Radelaide’The children of Marenahlli Bande, now have their own 40K PLUS pod thanks to our Adelaide team and the monies raised at their second Big Night Out (BNO) held in November this year.
The 40K crew from ‘Radelaide’, as they affecLonately call their city, threw another stellar night raising more than $16,000.
The Adelaide team enabled the funds for a 40K PLUS pod to be set up. It’s one of 40K’s more challenging PLUS pod locaLons due to the transient nature of the quarry miners and their families, as well as the social challenges experienced in these areas. The team and their supporters in Adelaide are looking forward to learning more about their 40K PLUS pod and the children that aYend.
So, what of the Big Night Out itself? Around 120 guests filled the beauLful NaLonal Wine Centre for a cultural experience. The evocaLve tunes of Picture Box Orchestra – an Australian/Indian compilaLon – set the scene throughout the special evening with sitar playing. Clary Castrission, 40K’s CEO, had guests revisiLng their childhood, remembering all of the big dreams we had as children – Prime Minister, singer, Australian cricket captain, lawyer -‐ and pointedly shared that many of the kids in rural India are not taught to dream the way we are here in Australia.
All in all it was a night that won’t be forgoYen. Especially because 30 more kids will now get the chance to dream like we do because they have access to a 40K PLUS pod.

I write to you all in buoyant mood following what has been a wonderful year of progress and achievement for all involved with the 40K FoundaLon.
A hugely successful 'Big Night Out' earlier in the year set the scene for a number of milestones to be reached. 10 40K PLUS pods have been opened in Bangalore and, in a stunning development, 40K India has established a base with a rapidly growing team.
We should celebrate our new and exciLng direcLon, while maintaining our passion and commitment to opening 32 40K PLUS pods by the end of 2013.
Hearty thanks to you all and let us conLnue to most significantly improve the lives of severely underprivileged children in India.
