THE COVER SHOTIf you’re in need of a black cab around Thamesmead, keep a look out for a very special one that could lead you all the way bay to the SCT. Mead stalwart Eddie McCann, who on most matchdays can be found helping out in and around the turnstiles or in the Mead Lounge, wanted to help advertise the club, with the result featuring on today’s programme cover. The club would really like to thank Eddie for his efforts in promoting us throughout Bexley - cheers Eddie!

FROM THE EDITOR...Good evening all and welcome back to Sporting Club Thamesmead for the second time in four days, this time as we welcome Maidstone.

It was another great result for Keith and the lads on Saturday afternoon as a terrific free-kick from new signing Derek Duncan secured an important 1-0 win over Grays Athletic.

It’s now just two defeats from twelve for the Mead and, with the possibility of climbing out of the bottom four within touching distance, the rest of the season is sure to be exciting indeed.

Tonight will be an extremely tough test against a Maidstone side gunning for the title, and two away games to Wingate & Finchley and then Margate follow this evening - we are back here on February 1st as we welcome Enfield Town.

FROM THE CHAIRMAN:

TERRYHILL

Good evening everyone and, firstly, let me welcome the players and officials of Maidstone United to our new home here at Sporting Club Thamesmead - we all hope that you enjoy your time with us and wish you a safe journey home tonight.

The last time that we played Maidstone was back in late September when we visited the Gallagher Stadium, and having been beaten 4-0 there, we had to return just seven days later for a Kent Senior Cup tie and lost 4-1!

It wasn’t the best of starts to our Ryman Premier League campaign, but I like to think that we have improved since then and the statistics would back that statement up, too.

We enjoyed a good result away at Bury Town just over a week ago when we picked up a 0-0 draw despite having quite a dismantled side.

Three new players were brought into the team and we also played a centre forward at right back in the form of Rob Carter, who put in a solid performance.

On top of that, our captain, Lewis Tozer, was suspended and will also see out this evening’s game as the third and final game of his suspension - a less than ideal situation when you’re

fighting for survival as we are.

But full credit must go to Keith and the boys for putting in a good performance, which was continued at the weekend with another three-point haul when we welcomed Grays Athletic here to the SCT.

The recent signings featured heavily, one of which scored the winning goal in Derek Duncan, but I must say that I have never seen so many players come and go in a single season!

I suppose the sides in the top half will add a couple as and when it’s needed,

but for those of us around the bottom there seems to be a lot of movement.

In all fairness, aside from a few injuries we have been enjoying a rather settled side throughout the past couple of months, which is good.

Tonight’s game is going to be another tough one, but if we can continue to work hard for each other than we may just be able to spring a surprise upon our visitors this evening - so get behind the lads once again.

Enjoy the game,Terry

“Tonight’s game is another tough one, but if we can work hard as we have been doing

then maybe we can spring a surprise”

Page 5: Thamesmead Town v Maidstone United

Good evening and welcome back for this evening’s game with Maidstone United, and welcome to their management team and players - I hope you enjoy your short stay here and wish you a safe journey home. The progress that playing again in their own town has allowed Maidstone is something really to be admired and, for that, Jay deserves so much praise and congratulations. This is, of course, our third meeting of the season, and on both of the first two occasions at their place we conceded four without doing ourselves too much justice. We always knew it was going to be a tough league for us this season and so it has been. That said, for the last couple of months we’ve done really well and shown that we can compete with just two defeats in twelve and sixteen points from that spell.

Going into the remainder of the season, we know that it’s going to be tough but we know we can compete. The first quarter of the season was tough - we were a bit naive at times for this level, but we’ve got to grips with it.

The games at Maidstone show how far we have come when we lose and concede four; the Lowestoft away game where we lost 0-5 up there, yet

then should have beaten them here a few weeks ago; we could have won at Lewes had they not equalised in the last minute; we went to Canvey Island and picked up a good point - we’re playing some good sides and getting results.

Obviously we’d prefer wins but we’ve stopped the rot and picked up all three points on Saturday with a 1-0 win over Grays. The two games before Saturday couldn’t have been more different; we were all gutted that we allowed Billericay a point, whilst at Bury it was a tremendous result to come away from a side chasing the play-offs with a point and clean sheet. It’s difficult because of restrictions on budgets and players become available, especially around this time of year. If a better player comes along then yes, I will try and get them.

We’ve got a few injuries and suspensions looming but we’re settled now on the shape that we play and if we can avoid injury we’ll get that settled side we all want. I’ve seen a lot of games this season and all the lads have bought into the idea on the training ground.

I’ve gone back onto it in the last weeks which has made a difference and we

just need to take things on from here and not rest on our laurels.

Every game is a cup final to us - there are just under twenty games left and I’ll say it again - another twenty points could well keep us up.

When you’re in our position, draws are big and they do feel like wins sometimes. We’re a positive group though and we will take every point that comes our way. We are getting closer and closer every week to finally getting out of the bottom four which, considering how poor we were at the start, will be a massive achivement. Make no mistake about it, once we make it out of the bottom four we won’t drop back in without putting up a fight. Finally from me, I’d like to add the best wishes to Roy Vinter’s family on his recent passing. As a player, what you want from administrators is common sense and a league that is a joy to play in.

Roy made sure that the Kent League was both and he will be sorely missed by those with ambitions to join us at this level in the future.

Enjoy the game,The Gaffer

THE BOARDROOM

May I welcome the directors, officials, players and supporters of Maidstone United to the SCT and a safe journey home after an enjoyable game and refreshments.

As you’ll know, I was the owner of Maidstone United for over eighteen years from 1992 - from the demise of the old league club until I retired in October 2010. I received incredible support from the hardcore supporters throughout the long journey we made to the Ryman Premier.

The only regret I still harbour to this day is that I was unable to take the club home, but at least I managed to keep the name Maidstone United Football Club alive. So a warm welcome to those special supporters if they are here tonight, and a special warm welcome to Brian, Angela and Jim. I wish you all the very best for the future in your new home.

Although I had made the pledge to myself of no more involvement in football and just to enjoy my gardening, I met with Keith McMahon in September 2012 and joined Thamesmead Town as a director.

Keith had guided the club whilst it was suffering financially due to the constant delays in completing the new stadium, albeit ably supported by a loyal group of committee members, headed by the Terry Hill.

Those that have visited Bayliss Avenue previously will certainly not recognise it now, gone is the old club house containing the old changing rooms and bar, together with its car park that usually resembled a small lake when it rained.

In its place, a large purpose-built car park, and to the left of the existing grass pitch you have the completed £6m stadium called Sporting Club Thamesmead.

Within this facility you have numerous areas to hold indoor activities, with changing rooms to cater for the players throughout the community that use the 4G pitch situated on the other side. We have a reception and offices, together with the main changing rooms and medical room.

Upstairs there are two bars with a large balcony looking over the 4G pitch, and there is the Mead Bar with access to the new stadium looking over the grass pitch, as well as a Boardroom.

Thamesmead Town directors at this time are in the final discussions of agreeing a ten-year licence to allow the first team, U21s and academy teams to play here.

So, unlike tonight’s visitors who own the freehold of their ground, we are only the main tenants of this great facility, with the only financial advantage to us being that we receive the net revenue from the Mead Bar, and tea bar on matchdays.

So one of our foremost aims is to get the local community more involved with the club.

At present, we have many football coaches working within the local schools, but the fact is that the revenue alone from our gates would not be sufficient to support a team playing in the Ryman Premier League.

As it is our intention to continue playing in this league,we must raise alternative revenue which, we believe, will be achieved by getting the local community and local businesses involved.

Mike Green has been appointed to this role in ensuring that the name of the club is out there, and we are starting to reap the rewards of this appointment but we have a long way to go.

Keith has now assembled a hard working squad and the players have started to gel as a unit.

This squad has been assembled on a small budget but, hopefully, they will give a good account of themselves for the remainder of the season against those bigger clubs with bigger budgets.

Let’s look forward to a good game.

IN OPPOSITION:

MAIDSTONE“I believe we’ve got a hell of a squad here but we’ve been top before & I don’t want to

get excited by being there again”

It is perhaps the Mead’s sternest test of the season so far this evening as Jay Saunders brings his title-chasing Maidstone United side to Sporting Club Thamesmead.

The Stones are well in the hunt for promotion to the Conference South, sitting just one point off the summit following Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Met Police.

Saunders’ men arrive at the SCT off the back of a run of form that has seen them lose just twice in the past twenty games, both defeats coming back-to-back in the space of four days.

Having topped the table for the first time in two months before the

weekend’s stalemate with the Met, Saunders insisted his side mustn’t get ahead of themselves as the season’s final straight nears.

“We’ve been top before and I don’t want to get excited just because we’re there again,” he told Kent Online.

“I believe we’ve got a hell of a squad here, but it’s not that long since we dropped to fifth and people were saying how bad we were.”

One disadvantage the Stones could have in their hunt for promotion is that twelve of their remaining twenty fixtures are on the road but, with the second best away record in the division, Saunders will be sure his side can prove their worth.

Maidstone United FC was founded in 1897 and then reformed in 1992 following the demise of the Football League side. The Stones started life again as Maidstone Invicta under the leadership of then Chairman Paul Bowden-Brown.

Maidstone United joined the Kent County League Division Four for the 1993/94 season and won the title at the first attempt. They also picked up the West Kent Challenge Shield and the Tunbridge Wells Charity Cup. They were promoted to Division Two following a restructuring of the league and won the title again as well as lifting the Kent Junior Cup.

After three seasons in Division One the Stones finally earned promotion to the Kent County League Premier Division. Much of the credit for turning the club around on the field must go to the then manager Jason Lillis. Lillis has a place in Stones’ history as the only player to appear in Maidstone United’s first and last games in the Football League.

In their second season in the Kent County League Premier Division, during which Maidstone United were awarded senior status, the Stones finished the league season as runners-up to Bearsted to earn promotion.

The 2001/2002 season saw the club return to the Kent League playing their home games at Central Park in Sittingbourne and appearing in the FA Vase for the first time. There were several highlights during the club’s inaugural Kent League season. This included a first ever match in the FA Vase, in which The Stones defeated Hellenic League Carterton Town by 4-1.

The Stones finished the league season as champions on the very last day when they defeated Deal Town at the Charles Sports Ground. The following week The Stones completed the Kent League and Cup double after defeating Whitstable Town by 2-0 at Folkestone Invicta’s Cheriton Road.

The 2002/2003 season highlight was the return of Maidstone United to the FA Cup. With the added attraction of being the focus of the BBC’s Road To Cardiff, the

Stones started their cup trail at Ramsgate and on the way defeated Tonbridge Angels and Newport (IoW) before succumbing to a defeat against Boreham Wood in the Second Qualifying Round in front of a home crowd of 937.

In the league, the club led the table for almost the entire season. However, following the late season resignation from the league of Faversham Town, the League Management Committee decided that the title would be awarded to the club with the highest earned points per match average.

So with Maidstone and Thamesmead Town both achieving 63 points from 30 games, the unusual situation arose that the championship was won by Cray Wanderers with 62 points (from 29 games.) The Stones lost the league title by 0.14 points! Silverware was forthcoming though, as the club won the Kent Senior Trophy for the first time in its history with a 3-0 victory over Cray Wanderers at Chatham Town FC.

The Stones were crowned Kent League champions for the second time in 2006 and secured the league and cup double with the title being won on the last day of the season with a resounding 4-1 win away to Sevenoaks Town. The Kent League Cup was won again with a 4-1 hammering of VCD Athletic at Folkestone Invicta’s Cheriton Road ground. Promotion to Ryman League Division One South was confirmed at the end of the season.

The Stones repeated their championship success for a second successive season, when, yet again on the last day of the campaign, they travelled to Walton Casuals and they secured the Ryman League Division One South title with a 2-1 win.

Following another promotion the club spent five years in the Ryman League Premier Division with little in the way of playing success. An eight year ground share with Sittingbourne ended and for two seasons the Stones moved to The Homelands in Ashford. However, it soon became apparent that sharing at Homelands was counter-productive.

The Chairman of 19 years, Paul Bowden-Brown stepped down from the helm of the club having taken it as far as he could. Oliver Ash and Terry Casey replaced Paul Bowden-Brown as majority shareholders and co-owners. The season ended in major disappointment as the Stones were relegated for the first time in their history to Ryman League Division One South.

The Stones missed out on the play-offs at the end of the 2011/12 season but the ultimate prize was happening off the pitch. The £2.6million Gallagher Stadium was completed and 2,226 watched first match between Maidstone and Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday 14 July. The first season back in the county town ended in a massive celebration when the Stones won promotion to the Ryman Premier Division beating Faversham Town 3-0 in the play-off final.

LEE WORGANWorgan began his career by coming through the youth ranks at Wimbledon and was one of a few players to stay with the squad during the move to become Milton Keynes Dons. He went on to sign for Wycombe Wanderers, Rushden & Diamonds, Cardiff City and Merthyr Tydfil. In late-2006, he joined Eastbourne Borough before being snapped up by Hastings United. A move to Kent following in 2008 when he signed for Tonbridge Angels, helping them win promotion to Conference South.

CHARLIE MITTENCharlie is a very experienced goalkeeper who has played for plenty of clubs in the south east of England during his long career. He can list Folkestone Invicta, Dover Athletic, Gillingham, Margate, Ebbsfleet United, Welling United, Faversham Town and Croydon Athletic as clubs he represented before joining the Stones. Injury has been a major factor in the past two seasons but he came back strong.

GRAEME ANDREWSGraeme began his football career locally with Bearsted and then spent time at Charlton Athletic. He moved on to Crabble for a short spell at Dover Athletic before spending three seasons at Welling United in Conference South. Graeme joined the Stones in summer 2011.

RICHARD DAVIESTwenty-year-old Richard joined the Stones over the summer from Erith & Belvedere. The pacy right back, who can play across the back line when required, won the Kent Hurlimann Premier Division league and cup double with the Deres last season. He picked up a serious injury in an FA Cup tie

against Merstham in September and is expected to miss the rest of this season.

TOM MILLSTom is a 22-year-old defender who has played more than 100 times for the Stones. He is a product of Maidstone United’s youth system and has been a contract player since March 2011. He is an exciting left-back who causes opponents problems with his pace, surging runs and pinpoint crosses.

DAN PARKINSONPart of the successful Maidstone United football academy, Dan was recalled from a loan spell with Ryman South side Leatherhead last month. He gained valuable Premier Division experience last season while registered with Cray Wanderers.

JACK PARKINSONJack signed for Maidstone last month from Skrill Premier side Woking. During his time with Surrey side he made 58 league and cup appearances, scoring fourteen times. While at previous club Welling, Parkinson made more than 130 league appearances for the Kent side, captaining the team in his last two seasons and leading them to the play-off final in 2011/12.

JERROME SOBERSSix foot four Jerrome joined the Stones last season from Bromley having also spent time at Kingstonian. In May 2012 he won the Ryman League Premier Division title with Billericay. He began his career at Ford United before being spotted by Ipswich Town, signing for the Tractorboys in 2004. He then spent time on loan at Brentford before returning to the non-league game with Chelmsford City.

STEVE WATTTwenty-eight year-old Steve joined the Stones from Dover Athletic in March, following a month on loan. Scotsman Watt made his way through the ranks at Aberdeen before moving to Chelsea, for whom he made two professional appearances during the Jose Mourinho era.

After a loan spell at Barnsley he then moved onto Swansea before returning north of the border to play for Inverness and Ross County. Steven then moved to Grimsby before relocating back south, signing for Dover in the summer of 2011.

ALEX BROWNAlex joined the club on a contract until the end of last season after being made available by Gillingham. The Maidstone-based player initially joined on loan from the Sky Bet League One club. The tenacious midfielder first joined the Gills Centre of Excellence at the age of 13, having previously been on the books of Charlton Athletic.

NATHAN CAMPBELLNathan signed from Skrill South side Basingstoke Town this month. Standing at 6ft 3in tall, he is a central midfielder but is equally capable in the heart of the defence. Campbell joined Basingstoke from AFC Totton in June 2012. He has also played for Chipstead and Croydon Athletic.

ALEX FLISHERAlex is an all-action attacking midfielder who has progressed through the club’s youth and reserve structure to the first team. He was a member of the Kent County FA U18 side who won the FA County Youth Cup in 2009-10. He was placed on contract by the club after his performances attracted interest from clubs further up the footballing ladder.

RORY HILLRory signed for Maidstone from neighbours Tonbridge Angels in February. The 23-year-old midfielder

was at Bromley in between two stints at Longmead. He started out with Millwall before joining Gillingham on a three-year scholarship, which was followed by a year’s professional contract. Other clubs include Lewes and Croydon Athletic.

MICHAEL PHILLIPSMichael initially joined the Stones from Hastings United in January 2011 before briefly leaving the club at the end of that season. He then re-joined the club in October 2011. He began his career at Gillingham where he spent six seasons before injury curtailed his full-time football ambitions. Subsequently he played for both Ramsgate and Tonbridge Angels and had a short spell at Erith Town.

CHARLEY ROBERTSONSeventeen-year-old Charley hails from the club’s football academy. He impressed team management and supporters alike with his performances during this pre-season.

FABIO SARAIVAFabio joined the Stones on a one-year contract in May. The 20-year-old scored 18 league goals for Merstham during the 2012/13 season and impressed Jay Saunders when the Stones played The Motesiders. He scored in three of the four recent matches between the two sides.

ORLANDO SMITHOrlando signed for Maidstone after impressing club bosses during pre-season. He was part of the Erith & Belvedere squad that won the Kent League championship last season, racked up 15 league goals and numerous assists.

The former Jamaican youth international signed for Welling United in August 2007 after spells at Beckenham Town and Chipstead. Smith spent a couple of seasons at Park View Road before signing for Farnborough.

JACK SULLIVANSeventeen-year-old Jack made his league debut for the Stones in a 5-3 win over Hendon in August. The versatile player is also part of the club’s football academy.

ZAC ATTWOODZac joined the Stones earlier this month. The 24-year-old scored three goals in five starts for Margate in a brief spell with the Thanet club at the start of the 2013/14 season. Last season he was at Hastings United where he clocked up 14 goals in 48 appearances for The U’s.

FRANNIE COLLINMaidstone is the fourth Kent club for the prolific centre forward. He joined Gillingham in 2005, scoring on his debut in a 2-0 League Cup win. When the then Gills boss Andy Hessenthaler moved to Dover Athletic, Collin joined him at the Crabble and his 21 league goals were crucial to the Whites’ promotion. He signed for Tonbridge Angels in 2010 and another promotion from the Ryman Premier Division was added to his CV. In the following Conference South campaign he won the Golden Boot .

JACK HARRISNineteen-year-old Jack signed for the Stones at the end of October from Tunbridge Wells.

He scored 51 goals in 112 starts for the Southern Counties East side. A highlight from last season was playing at Wembley in front of almost 17,000 people in the FA Vase final.

ASHLEY MILLERThe 19-year-old has signed a month-long deal with the Stones. Miller made his professional debut for Gillingham at the age of 16 and immediately caught the eye of numerous Premier League clubs. In the past year, Miller has been on-loan at Ramsgate and Tonbridge and had two stints at the Reachfields Stadium with Scott Porter’s Hythe side.

THE TREATMENT ROOM:

BEHIND THEGREEN DOOR

“The recent results against Bury & Grays have come from great effort & Saturday’s win gives everyone at the club a boost”

THE PHYSIO

Welcome back to this evening’s game and welcome to all who have joined us from Maidstone.

The recent results with Bury and Grays have come from a great effort from the lads, particularly at Bury against a side pushing for the top five.

The lads all battled hard and picked up a terrific point against a side who harbour aspirations of a play-off place.Strangely, we were even a bit gutted that we weren’t coming back with all three points, but we weren’t to be denied maximum points this weekend.

We enjoyed some new faces in the squad for those two games and,

collectively, we’ve rolled our sleeves up to continue the solid run of form we’ve shown since November.

On the injury front, Chris Saunders is currently struggling with a calf strain and Lewis Tozer tweaked a hamstring in the game with Billericay.

Ross Lover has undergone his operation and the doctor has told us that he’s pleased with the outcome so far. This season will likely come too early for Ross though, so next season is our goal at the moment.

Otherwise, Danny Phillips remains out, continuing to suffer with the broken toe picked up recently.

I’d like to welcome Simon Glover to the team - in the short time I’ve seen him so far I can tell he’ll be a real asset.

There is a buzz around the club and the players can’t wait for the next game - it’s been great to see players like Ashley Probets back out on the pitch in friendlies, and another three points at the weekend was a further boost to everyone at the club.

It’s an important few months but you can see how far we’ve come as a team this season - it’s been an extremely difficult learning curve but also a great challenge that we’ve all enjoyed.

There are very few officials involved in Kent football who are liked by everyone - but that was the impression that has come from Roy’s death.

Always a gentleman, Roy was well respected by all those that came across him. He was fair and firm, but always willing and happy to give clubs advice when required.

To the many league officials he served alongside, he was the one everyone would look up to and admire.

Roy had been ill for some time but he battled bravely and was still taking a keen interest in league matters. Roy had lots of experience of match

officiating at nearly all levels, league administration in various capacities and brought stability to the then Kent League alongside only two chairpersons in his twenty-four years in the league. Work took Roy south from his native North East and, after initially moving to Slough, he moved to Kent in 1971.

He was appointed to the Kent League referees list in 1972, taking charge of the League Cup final in 1979. In the same year he was appointed secretary of Whitstable Town FC before joining the Kent League management committee in 1980.

He was then appointed secretary and treasurer of the Kent League in 1990,

stepping down from the former role in 2013, the year following his election as league president. Roy has served football in various capacities over seven decades, receiving the FA fifty years service award last year (being a referee doesn’t count), no mean fete for anyone, and all of those involved in Football in Kent have been able to benefit from the experience and knowledge that he had gained.

Kent Football and the Southern Counties East Football League will be poorer for this loss. We’d like to thank our Match sponsors tonight, Kent Sports News, for allowing us to reproduce some of the tribute

A couple of weeks ago Kent Football lost a great administrator, a great supporter and, more importantly, a great friend when Roy Vinter, the President of the League once called the Kent League finally lost a long brave fit for life. Today on the day that Roy has been laid to rest, Mike Green has compiled this tribute.

REMEMBERING ROY VINTER

18 The Mead v Maidstone United

Page 19: Thamesmead Town v Maidstone United

that they did for Roy with Kent FA Chairman Barry Bright. Kent FA Chairman, Barry Bright, has been speaking for the first time about the sad passing of the Southern Counties East League president Roy Vinter.

Speaking at the counties Cobdown headquarters, Mr Bright who was clearly still upset at the news, told KSN that Mr Vinter’s shoes will be very difficult to fill. “It was extremely sad news and probably the end of an era really with the Kent League changing its name to the Southern Counties East of which Roy became president.

“Probably sees a line drawn under the Kent League in a very sad way for many followers of Kent football.

“Roy was a very popular man served that League as Secretary for 20 years - was a referee before it.

“A good man who epitomised everything that was right about the game - he worked hard for the game.

“He had standards that he expected to be met but he had time for people, and many people within the clubs and those associated with the Kent League have a lot to thank him for and will be sorely missed - he was a good man. “Sadly, we do lose people who serve the game so well. I was pleased on behalf of the FA in October to undertake the homour of presenting his so well richly-deserved long service award - an award that is only given to those who have given over fifty years service - the last time I saw him.

“Most people know that he hadn’t been terribly well for a little while and he will be sorely missed and the sympathies of Kent football go to his wife and family at this tragic time.

“Roy was somewhat unique - he had time and he listened; an essential part of life these days; he listened to those who needed help and they appreciated that.

“They appreciated the fact that he expected respect but also gave respect and sometimes that word is used very loosely in this day and age.

“But in a league like the Kent League, senior clubs still need from time to time the advice of those who are involved in the running of the competition and Roy was always there for them.

“They liked him; they admired him and they respected him. And that, I hope, really epitomised his life the way he was and the Kent League have an awful lot to thank him for. “Roy will, I’m sure, hope that the strength of football at that level within Kent will continue to prosper; he will hope that the Southern Counties East League gets itself up to a level of clubs with facilities able to compete at that level; able to bring back such momentous days as we had with Deal Town when they won the FA Vase.

“Hopefully there are clubs that are able to get to that standard that Tunbridge Wells did so gloriously last year and I think that that’s what he will be hoping that all that work he put in - hours and hours and hours of work that he put in - will have enriched the situation for Kent football in years to come.

“Hopefully we will see a leading number of Kent clubs at the fore in this country and I think if that happens and people have a little bit of fun, people

turn out to watch them, I think he will look down quite satisfied.”

Our very own Paul Bowden-Brown had known Roy across a number of years, and was clearly shocked when told of Roy’s death before the Mead’s last home game with Lowestoft.

He said: “To hear of the death of my old friend Roy Vinter is quite a shock to me, although I knew he had been ill for some time.

“I met Roy when Maidstone United were applying to gain entrance to the Kent League, and it was by Roy’s personal intervention that Maidstone were unanimously accepted by the other teams into the Kent League.

“When we won it, Roy was very helpful during our promotion to the Ryman. All throughout this time, although I was Chairman of the club, I also was secretary and so was very new to the administration procedures of football clubs, to which Roy helped me throughout and became a very good friend on-and-off the field.

“When I became seriously ill just before I left MUFC and was admitted to hospital, Roy sent me personal good wishes and even offered to visit me in London. That is the type of person he was.

“Local football has lost a friend and true servant - I know I have. Rest easy Roy, and condolences to his wife, Carol.” Condolences that I’m sure would have shone half way around East Kent this afternoon - to the administrator - Mr Vinter, thanks for everything. To my friend, RIP Roy.

“...Roy was unique - he had time, he listened to those who needed help & they appreciated that - he expected respect, but also gave it...”

MATCH REPORT:

ACTION REPLAY

It was a game that had it all and left Mead boss Keith McMahon bewildered and speechless as his side threw away a three goal lead with virtually the last kick of a titanic struggle.

On a pitch that belied the punishment that the weather has subjected it too over the past couple of weeks, the Gaffer looked on in pride as his side ripped up the form book to storm into a three goal lead before looking on in disbelief Billericay snatched a point.

Ricky Sappleton gloriously levelled with the last kick of the game to deny the Mead the three points in their fight to get out of the division’s bottom four, but they can take great heart from their performance.

The first half played in ever worsening conditions was a joy to behold for the home sides loyal fans as Thamesmead scored three times at home for the first time this season.

After surviving early Billericay pressure, Rashid Kamara came agonisingly close to giving the home side the lead as visiting keeper Billy Lumley pulled off a fine save to tip Rashid’s drive round the post.

The home did though take the lead on 24 minutes when Shamir Mullings battled through into the box, prodded the ball past the keeper’s advance before Shamir ran onto the ball and blasted it high into the net.

The second arrived 2 minutes later and made all the hard work that the groundstaff had put into the pitch all worth while as Rashid for the second game in succession at the SCT scored an absolute cracker straight out of the

top draw and another contender for goal of the season.

Picking the ball up just inside the Billericay half, Rashid beat two challenges before sending an exocet of shot arrowing above the despairing Lumley and dipped perfectly into the top right corner of the net.

Incredibly it got better still for the Mead as on 31 minutes Baff Addae was on hand to head home a Sean Roberts

free kick - Sean’s striker looped high into the air off of the wall and Baff jumping highest was able to head the ball into the net to send the home side into dream land.

Now “all” we had to do was reach half time with the lead intact - sadly as is the story of the season, the Mead couldn’t, as three minutes from the break, a right wing corner was met by defender Richard Halle who’s header powered beyond a statuesque Rob Budd and thundered into the top corner of the net.

With the boost of only being two behind, the visitors came out after the break with all guns blazing and took the game to their hosts Sappleton should have perhaps done better when Josk Ekim put him through, the striker clipped the ball over the advancing Budd but sent the ball into the car park.

Billericay plugged and plugged away and substitute Isaac Layne crashed a shot onto the face of the Thamesmead cross bar.

The visitors persistence finally paid off 12 minutes from time as when a corner came back of the post and Sappleton bundled the ball over the line to set up a grand stand finish.

Try as they might, Billericay could not get the ball into the net again as the home defence literally put everything in the way of the ball until, heart breakingly in the fourth minute of stoppage time, they allowed

Sappleton too much room in the box.

The visiting frontman coolly curled the ball round Budd into the corner of

the net to spark wild celebration amongst the visiting

supporters, leaving the Thamesmead players

and fans alike looking skywards in disbelief.

There was just enough time for the Mead to

restart before referee Kane - who incidentally

handled the game and the conditions as well as

the players - blew the full time whistle.

Honours even, and although the home side had lost a three goal lead, it was probably over the balance of play on the 90 minutes a right result on a day it was proved that a grass pitch could be played on after its rained!

FA CUP third round day and, as sure as night follows day, a lot of the talk is about magic – or the lack of it.

Someone call in David Blaine quick and see if he can come up with anything to make the world’s oldest competition what it once was.

The same debate is played out year after year with misty eyed fans and pundits remembering the good old days when all anyone wanted was to get to Wembley and win the thing.

A time when managers didn’t give their big hitters a week off and didn’t use it as an opportunity to blood some youngsters (Don’t they know that’s what the LEAGUE CUP is for).

Sadly finishing in the bottom-half of the Premier League is now seen as more important by certain managers than actually getting a bit of silverware in the dusty trophy cabinet at their club.

For what it’s worth, and that’s probably not a lot, I don’t think the FA Cup has completely lost its magic.

Yes, shifting the final kick-off to a more TV friendly 5:30pm is worse than forgetting to send your nan a birthday card but down at the bottom of the

pile it still conjures up great stories and gives players the opportunity to enjoy five minutes in the spotlight. The money Macclesfield are earning from their on-going Cup run is keeping them alive.

The FA Cup romance debate could go on forever and probably will.

But amid all the disrespecting of the Cup and first-team changes, two names popped up more familiar in Non-League circles – Danny Whitehead, now at West Ham, and Sunderland’s Duncan Watmore.

For the former Non-Leaguers it was a chance to make their first team debuts.

Last season Whitehead was in the Conference with Stockport County and Duncan Watmore was banging in goals for Conference North side Altrincham.

Now they might not be the household names people – West Ham manager Sam Allardyce has been hammered for his Hammers selections including Whitehead against Nottingham Forest

– want to see but let’s look at it from the other perspective.

These two lads will have been involved in FA Cup games before and loved every minute of it. Watmore was on TV when Alty took Burton to a replay in 2012. No doubt some would have been alerted to his exciting talent for that very reason.

Now he’s taken to the pitch in the very same competition for a Premier League club.

There will be young Non-League footballers now who can take inspiration from their rise.

While some would do well to remember what the Cup is really about, there’s still plenty of magic in the old dog yet.

NON-LEAGUE PAPER

Matt Badcock from the Non-League Paper discusses the decline in reputation and importance of the FA Cup to many

of today’s managers and clubs in the higher divisions

IN OPPOSITION

COMMERCIALCORNER

This evening we welcome to the players, officials and supporters of pacesetters Maidstone United to Sporting Club Thamesmead for very the first time - the old place has certainly changed a bit since the last time we faced each other here, which is perhaps a mark of how far both clubs have come. A big thank you this evening to our match sponsors, Kent Sports News. Once again, we welcome Steve Wolfe and his team and hope that you enjoy your evening with us. We still have a few remaining match sponsorships available between now and the end of the season so please, if you are interested, come and see me or get in touch with the details below. A brief personal note if I am allowed - watching as much football as I do around the county and even as a devoted Gillingham fan, I’m delighted to welcome my Maidstone friends to the SCT this evening and I’m sure that our discussions over grass or 3G will continue in its usual friendly way; hopefully over a beer after the game, but welcome all! Another big thank you to the Cooper family for their ongoing sponsorship of the home Man of the Match award - the list of recipients is growing, and why not hang around after the game in the Mead Lounge to see tonight’s winner at around 10pm?

We’re still looking for local companies who would like to become part of our family here at the SCT. We can offer you and your friends and/or colleagues a great afternoon out. Interested? Simply get in touch with me on a matchday or by the contact details listed on this page. Our next home game is next Saturday, February 1st, when we host Enfield Town. It is yet another huge game for us and Keith and the boys will value your support - watch out too for the start of a number of offers to repay the faith that our supporters have shown during the course of the last few months. And finally, I’d like to send my condolences to the family of Roy Vinter who passed away last week - Roy was an absolute gentleman and it was my privilege to call him a friend, and you can read our tribute to Roy across pages 18 and 19 this evening.

Enjoy the game,Greenie

NEXT AT THE SCT:

ENFIELD TOWNThere’s two away games for the Mead following this evening’s fixture with Maidstone, before Keith McMahon’s side return to the SCT to kick off February.

On that day, the Mead will welcome Enfield Town in what looks set to be another big six-pointer for the side, with both teams battling for survival in a bid to claw themselves out of the bottom four.

Prior to Town’s last two games, in which they have picked up four points thanks to a win over Cray Wanderers and a draw with East Thurrock, George Borg’s side had lost eleven from twelve in the Ryman Premier and sunk like a stone from their comfortable midtable surroundings.

The victory over Cray marked Town’s first win in the league since August, when they defeated the Mead 3-1, and Borg believes the win can provide a springboard from which to mount a survival bid, as he explained to the Enfield Advertiser.

“I’m not going to go overboard and we’ve got to try to keep it going because we’ve got a lot of tough battles ahead of us,” he expained. “But we’re definitely heading in the right direction.

“I didn’t expect an instant transformation, but the signs are there now and I’m confident for a far more successful second half of the season.

“Now is when the hard work needs to pay off. I think the players we have are good enough and competing well, so we should get something from the teams around us.”

Town travel to Hornchurch this evening, before facing two home fixtures prior to their trip to the SCT - they’ll be hoping to maintain their mini-revival for those.

ON THE ROAD:WINGATE & FINCHLEY

Saturday 25th January 2014 Kick-off: 3.00pm N12 0PD 27 miles 55 minutes

The simplest way to get to The Harry Abrahams Stadium is to get on to the A406 North Circular Road.

Coming from the East (eg via A10, M11) take the A1000 turn off. At the end of the slip road turn left at the lights. Go straight over the next set of lights, then after 100m pass through another set of lights. Then at the next set of lights turn right into Summers Lane.

The Abrahams Stadium is a few hundred metres down on the right hand side.
