FROM THE EDITOR...Welcome back to Sporting Club Thamesmead as Keith and the lads go in search of their first points of the season following a difficult start to life in the Ryman Premier League.

The season kicked off here ten days ago as Hendon became the first victors at the new Sporting Club Thamesmead, and it didn’t get any easier on the pitch three days later when the side travelled to Lowestoft and suffered a 5-0 defeat.

The Mead are back in action again tonight though as we welcome Met Police to Sporting Club Thamesmead and, with Jim Cooper’s men having begun the season with a mixed bag of results, let’s hope for some points this evening.

We’re back here again on Saturday as we welcome Margate, and we hope to see you all back here with us too.

FROM THE CHAIRMAN:

TERRYHILL

Good evening everyone and can can I welcome Met Police to Sporting Club Thamesmead - I hope you enjoy your short stay with us tonight and I wish you a safe journey home.

So far we have had a baptism of fire in this Ryman Premier Division! Although we lost our opening game to Hendon 4-0, the scoreline didn’t reflect the game.

Hendon opened the scoring with a worldy strike from twenty yards but, before that, we had hit the bar and I thought we were the better side for the first hour with two other chances to take the lead.

We’re quickly learning that if you do not take your chances, you will get punished.

Our second game was away to Lowestoft on Tuesday night.

We travelled with a depleted squad due to players not getting time off of work or pulling out at the last minute, which is something I wasn’t happy with and I am sure Keith will address.

We were 4-0 down at half-time to a very good Lowestoft side, but after Keith’s half-time team talk we played much better, eventually losing 5-0.

Lowestoft had signed a player from Ipswich who had played for the first team and had been released by Mick McCarthy, whilst Hendon had Michael Duberry of ex-Leeds and Chelsea - so that’s what we are up against!

We know it will take us at least six games to settle in, though, and last Saturday we travelled to Billericay.

During the warm-up our goalkeeper Rob Budd put his shoulder out to be replaced by Callum McGeehan, and we played really well having scored

twice and hit the bar by half-time.

Unfortunately, we lost 3-2. The last goal had a touch of luck for Billericay with the referee getting in the way of our pass, resulting in the ball falling for them to score the winning goal - so you could say we are certainly not getting the rub of the green at the moment.

Let’s hope we have a bit of luck tonight.

Enjoy the game,Terry

KEITHMcMAHON

“I thought we started building a platform on Saturday - we’re all really positive & one

win will open the door for us”

Good evening and welcome back for tonight’s match against Met Police, and may I welcome Jim Cooper and his side to SCT - I hope you enjoy your short stay with us and have a safe journey home.

What can I say about our start to the Ryman Premier? Three games and three defeats doesn’t look good on paper, but if you have followed us you’ll know our performances have merited four points.

Our first game in the league saw us lose 4-0 at home to Hendon. It looks like a hammering but, if you look at the video, we deserved a draw. We missed chances at critical times and got punished; we hit the bar early on and Hendon scored a screamer to go a goal up.

We gathered ourselves and played really well for the next fifty minutes, though, looking the better side. The turning point was mid-way through the second half when we missed two excellent chances. I think if we had scored, then we would have gone on and won the game, but we didn’t and Hendon went straight up the other end and scored. We conceded to sloppy late goals at the end whilst trying to get something back, but I was positive with the performance.

On Tuesday we travelled to Lowestoft and got hammered 5-0. I’m not making excuses, but I was missing seven players from the squad I would like to have picked. We were let down by a few and had injuries for the others.

For the first twenty minutes of the game Lowestoft blew us away. They raced to a

4-0 lead and even that flattered us; it could have been seven or eight!. We managed to get in a half-time for a few words and, in the second half, I thought we played well and passed the ball very well. We did concede again late on, but I was a little bit happier than at half-time.

This will happen throughout the season if we can’t commit to the travelling that this league requires, but we had to dust ourselves down and go again.

Saturday saw us travel to Billericay Town with a few players back. Our skipper, Lewis Tozer, was back from suspension and Ross Lover made his first start for us. I also had Callum McGeehan back and new signing, Danny Phillips, too. Although we weren’t still at full strength we did have a strong side and I was confident going into the game.

What I wasn’t prepared for was the bad luck, losing goalkeeper Rob Budd before the game when he dislocated his shoulder in the warm-up. So we put outfield player Callum McGeehan in goal. I told the lads that this is what our club is all about; when we are up against it, we come out fighting and that’s exactly what we did.

Our first half performance was excellent and we raced into a 2-0 lead with two great goals. The first was a great finish from Jon Main, lobbing the goalkeeper from twenty-five yards. The second was just as good from Danny Phillips when his shot went in off the bar.

It was all one-way traffic and we should have put the game beyond doubt when

we hit the bar from six yards out just before half-time. But we started the second half like the first and, for the third quarter we were excellent before Billericay scored out of nothing to get back in the game.

They equalised five minutes later when, again, some sloppy defending led to a goal. Although I think Buddy may have saved it, I’m not taking anything away from Callum who was excellent for us. We were on the back foot and our bad run of luck continued when, as we broke, a through ball cannoned off the back of the referee, straight to the winger who crossed for the winner.

I was absolutely gutted. We had played really well but again come away with nothing. I was fairly angry with our defending, but happy with our performance. It’s just not going our way at the moment and I’m positive that I will turn it around. We have a good bunch of lads in the dressing room and they can see we are a good side and our luck will change.

Let’s hope its tonight against Met Police. Again, this is going to be a very difficult game, but they all are in this league. Jim always has a strong side and I’m expecting the same. We need to regroup, trust each other and stay positive to get a result.

We need to start building a platform and I thought we did on Saturday and then we can build from there. I’m still really positive and so are the players; one win will open the door for us then we can settle down.

Enjoy the game,The Gaffer

PAULBOWDEN-BROWN

“Given time, Keith will get the squad working for each other & they’ll become the

winning team as in previous seasons”

THE BOARDROOM

May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of the Met Police to our new home this Tuesday evening and, after an enjoyable game and some refreshments, a safe journey home.

Well those that thought that the transition from the Ryman North to the Ryman Premier League would be easy have well and truly been proved incorrect! Here we are playing our fourth game tonight and still no points on the table, but it is not for the lack of effort or commitment from the team.

We must take into consideration the players out injured, suspensions carried over from last season and the learning curve for those young players that have not played at this level previously.

During my twenty-five years within non-league football I’ve seen teams start like this before (Maidstone United went one season having points showing single figures until the end of September, but ended up fighting for promotion at the end of the season!), and nothing is cast in stone.

So we must therefore just stick together, support Keith and his team and take our chances when we can. You do not become bad teams or individual footballers overnight. Of

course, we must be sensible and start getting points on the table but I think, given time, Keith will get the squad working for each other and they will become a winning team as he has in previous seasons.

With a little bit of the rub of the green, results will start going our way, but we must not be complacent and we must not allow this unfortunate losing run to be the topic of discussion - let’s pull together and be positive as you all know we are better than the current league position suggests.

This is a team game and each matchday there is a bigger team working tirelessly behind the scenes ensuring that we can put a team out each week - I have always said that without this team of volunteers there would never be a successful non-neague programme.

I hope you will enjoy your short visit to our new home, the £5m development called SCT, built by the Thamesmead Trust, and I thank all involved through all of the problems in ensuring that one day this building became a reality.

We, at this time, are still settling in ourselves, and if you’ve had time to look around you’ll see that there is a full-size 3G pitch the other side of the

stadium, two bars serving first-class food as well a large range of drinks on the upper floors.

On the ground floor, there’s numerous changing rooms, medical rooms and two function suites with all the facilities open and available to the community.

I’m sure that with the continued help of Simon the Stadium Manager and his very competent staff we will soon be in a position to call it our home and mean it, rather than feeling it is a dream.

At the same time, I know that we as a club will be envied playing our football within these great facilities, but we must also remember the five-year delay of the completion that we’ve endured and the associated problems of working and playing in a building site that Keith and the committee have had to deal with on a daily matter.

But now is the time to put that all behind us and look forward to the future where our first team can stand up and be counted within this league, and our youth and academy teams can progress whilst being given these excellent facilities to work in.

Enjoy the match,Paul Bowden-BrownDirector

MET POLICE“It’s been a mixed start for the Met Police so far as they look to build on their most successful season ever last time out”

It’s been a mixed start to the season for tonight’s visitors to Sporting Club Thamesmead, as Jimmy Cooper’s Met Police look to build on their most successful season ever.

Last year saw the Met finish in sixth place in the Ryman Premier League, only missing out on a play-off spot on goal difference as well as enjoying a run to the First Round Proper of the FA Cup where the side lost out 2-1 to League One Crawley.

So far this campaign, the Met have won one, drawn one and lost one of their three opening fixtures, leaving no real indication of where the season may be heading following Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Dulwich Hamlet.

Cooper has added astutely to his side this season as they seek to go one better than last time out, with Stuart

Searle arriving from Chelmsford as a very capable custodian in goal, as well as Emmanuel Osei from Leiston and Simon Huckle from Kingstonian amongst a number of others.

Despite building a whole new side with his summer arrivals, Cooper was still disappointed to see one of his more important midfielders, Ty Smith, depart the club for Canvey Island.

“Canvey offered him something we couldn’t match,” he revealed. “That’s what we’re up against - there seems to be far more money in the league this year and we’ve been outbid for four or five players.”

Although last season’s form would suggest this is to be a stern test for the Mead, the mixed opening to the season for the Met will give hope that Keith McMahon’s side can register their first points of the campaign tonight.

On 6th July 1829, Sir Robert Peel formed the Metropolitan Police, the first organised Police Force in the world, with an office overlooking the Thames at Whitehall known as Scotland Yard, a name that has become famous throughout the world, and also became synonymous with the Metropolitan Police.

Ninety years later, in 1919, the Metropolitan Police Football Club was formed, playing friendly matches until joining the Spartan League in 1928. Apart from the war years (1939-45), the club remained in that competition until 1960. During that time the Blues were League Champions eight times, runners-up once and League Cup winners once. In 1960 the Blues joined the Metropolitan League, winning the League Cup in 1969.

In 1971 the Blues were accepted into the Southern League and played in Division South until 1977, under Team Manager Vic Rouse, the former Wales and Crystal Palace goalkeeper.

In 1977, the Blues moved to the Isthmian League, becoming one of the founder members of the restructured Division Two. A successful first season (1977/78) resulted in the club finishing runners-up to Epsom & Ewell and being promoted to Division One.

As a result of finishing third from the bottom in 1984/5, the Blues were relegated to Division Two (South). Ironically, in that season the Blues enjoyed their best run in the FA Cup, reaching the First Round Proper.

On returning to Division Two (South) the Blues finished 7th in both 1985/6 and 1986/7. During 1987/88 the Blues led the Division Two (South) table in January by seven points but they were overhauled by Chalfont St Peter, who won their last two games of season and became champions by just one point. The Blues were runners-up by virtue of a one-goal difference over Dorking. It was a nail-biting finish to a season in which the Blues lost just two league matches, both away.

The next two seasons saw the club finish

in mid-table in Division One but in 1990/1 the club finished second from bottom and were relegated into the newly formed Division Two of the restructured Diadora (Isthmian) League.

The club remained in Division Two for several years, always finishing in the top half but just outside the promotion positions. In 1993/4 the Blues again reached the First Round Proper of the FA Cup, losing 2-0 to Crawley Town.

Season 1994/5 saw the club celebrate its 75th Anniversary with a game against the Army and the opening of a new grandstand at Imber Court. The Blues finished in 5th position in Division Two and ended the season with a thrilling victory in the Carlsberg Trophy, defeating Collier Row in a penalty shoot-out following a 1-1 draw after extra-time.

During the next few seasons the club continued to finish in the top half of Division Two and in 1999/2000 reached the Fifth Round of the FA Vase (last 8), losing to the eventual winners Deal Town.

In 2002/3 the Ryman League was restructured and the Blues were placed in Division One South. That season the club finished second from bottom and faced the prospect of relegation, whilst another poor season in 2003/4 saw the side finish just above the relegation places.

Following the FA restructuring of the non-league pyramid, in 2004/5 the club moved to the Ryman League Division One.

In their first full season in charge, the new management team of Jim Cooper, assisted by Gavin MacPherson and John Nicholson, had an immediate impact and the Met finished 5th in the Division One, thus qualifying for the play-offs where the side lost out to Bromley on penalties.

It was play-off heartbreak again a season later as Dover ran out victors against the Met, before further F. A. restructuring resulted in a Ryman League Division 1 North and Division 1 South in 2006/7 and the club finished in sixth position in the Division 1 South. However, the club reached the final of the Surrey Senior

Cup for the first time since 1933 but was beaten 4-1 after extra time.

In 2007/8 the Blues finished 4th in the Ryman League Division 1 South but, for the third time in four years, was beaten in the play-off semi final, this time 2-0 by Cray Wanderers.

The club again finished in the season after and, again, lost out to Cray with a 1-0 defeat in the play-off final.

League disappointment in 2009/10 was offset by winning the London Senior Cup for the first time in the club’s history, beating AFC Wimbledon in an exciting final, 4-3 on penalties.

The 2010/11 season proved to be the most exciting in the club’s history, culminating in the club winning the Ryman League Division 1 South Championship by the narrow margin of one goal.

Bognor Regis Town had a two-point advantage during the latter stages of the season and that was the situation when the clubs lined up for the final match.

Bognor were held to an unexpected draw by Chatham Town and with the Met managing to scramble a 1-0 win against Merstham, it was enough to win the title with a goal difference of 61 against Bognor’s 60.

So, for the first time in the club’s history it competed in the Ryman League Premier Division during the 2011/12 Season. The club got off to a flying start and at Christmas found themselves in 4th position but unfortunately fell away in the second half of the season and finished in 12th position.

Last year proved to be the most successful in the club’s history, finishing in 6th position in the Ryman League Premier Division, missing out on a play-off place on goal difference (9 goals).

The club had a good run in the FA Cup, reaching the First Round Proper, before eventually losing 2-1 to Crawley Town from League One.

THE TREATMENT ROOM:

BEHIND THEGREEN DOOR“It’s been a rollercoaster so far but this is a special club that loves being the underdog -

let’s hope it brings out our best”

THE PHYSIO

Well what a rollercoaster time it is currently having started the season looking fine for seventy minutes; bang, bang bang and we’re 4-0 down!

Shell-shocked was an understatement for the Hendon game ten days ago and we’ve picked up a couple of knocks too - Theo to the ankle and Shaggy to his knee. That doesn’t include Richard’s thigh strain either, but we soldier on.

Last Monday, the gaffer and I went to Wealdstone for a game which was a late night, but the gaffer made plenty of notes in his famous black book and we moved onwards to Lowestoft last

Tuesday.

With Carly looking after the injured players back at the club, the rest of us made a nice three-hour coach journey and let’s just say it was a bad day at the office for forty-five minutes.

We started to play in the second half and kept our shape, looking much more solid after the break.

We did have some players missing for that game, but credit to the boys there who took time off of work in order to make it to the meet.

Last week the treatment table was full with George (shoulder), Shaggy (knee),

Theo (ankle) and both Ash and Danny K doing their rehab. Having Carly to work with the boys is a major help as we only get a short time with the lads, and we need as much time as we can with the games coming thick and fast.

Tozzer is now back from his enforced break which is a major plus.

We all know we’re working hard to make this a good season so keep backing the boys.

This is a special club that loves being the underdog, so let’s hope it brings the best out of us all.

FEATURE INTERVIEW

THE FEATURE INTERVIEW:

ONE-ON-ONE WITHJAY PORTER

The start of a new campaign always brings plenty of optimism and fresh hope, but it has been a challenging one on the pitch so far for the Mead in the early stages.

It is the club’s debut season in the Ryman Premier League and, naturally, rising a level brings plenty of tough obstacles with it for the side to overcome.

Ten days ago saw the visit of Hendon in the season’s curtain-raiser, but despite holding their own for most of the game and having plenty of chances of their own, the Mead slipped to a 4-0 defeat with three late goals during the final quarter of an hour.

It was a cruel lesson for Keith McMahon’s side who didn’t warrant

such a scoreline, but for left back Jay Porter there was plenty to take from the game moving forward.

“There are lots of positives for us,” he revealed to Football Exclusives. “The Ryman Premier League is a hard division, especially coming up from the Ryman North, but I thought we did well.

“If we had taken our chances then it would have been a completely different game.”

The full-back has been suffering from injury during pre-season, but returned to McMahon’s starting eleven in time for the new season and

felt comfortable, putting in a solid

display.

And despite the eventual scoreline, the

youngster was also content in his individual showing come the final whistle. Moreover, he remains assured that the side will find their feet sooner rather than later.

He continued: “I thought I did alright - I still need to get used to this level having come up one, but I thought I did ok.

“If all eleven work hard together and we find our feet, then I think we’ll do well with a good run of games together. We can definitely grab points, all day long.”

“IT’S A HARD DIVISION, BUT IF WE HAD TAKEN OUR CHANCES

THEN IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A COMPLETELY

DIFFERENT GAME - WE’LL BE OK”

THE BEAUTIFUL GAME

THE BEAUTIFUL GAME:

HOPES & DREAMS“We’d all like the lifestyle of a footballer at

the highest level, just look at Mario Balotelli living it up at AC Milan”

Let’s be honest, we’d all like the lifestyle of a footballer wouldn’t we?! Especially those playing at the very highest level.

Just look at Mario Balotelli, plying his trade at AC Milan, living it up, and in the process of having a crystal encrusted water-eature built in his backyard at home.

We’d all love one of those, wouldn’t we? No, me neither!

Do you remember that madcap idea a few months ago when Macclesfield Town were trying to raise funds to remain a full-time outfit?

They initially offered a supporter a chance to pay £20,000 to become a pro-footballer for the week and play at least ten minutes in ONE game.

“WE’D ALLLOVE A PLAYER

LIKE VINNIE JONES IN OUR SIDE - THE

NO-NONSENSE, TENACIOUS

PLAYER WHO WILL GET STUCK IN TO

THEM”

Page 17: Thamesmead Town v Metropolitan Police

The Mead v Met Police 17

THE BEAUTIFUL GAME

Now if it were the other way around, and Macclesfield were offering me £20K to turn out in their colours for ten minutes, I may well consider it – it depends if I was busy that day, I’d have to check my diary!

Remarkably, after a lot of hoo-ha and the obvious health and safety aspects relating to the idea, it did actually happen!

Sadly though, the guy who forked out a mere £10,000 for twenty minutes on the pitch only lasted ten minutes in a pre-season game against Stoke City after getting injured. That’s £1,000 a minute he paid to play for Silkmen – the sillyman!

It makes you wonder if the signing of One Direction’s Louis Tomlinson was more of a publicity stunt at Doncaster Rovers than an astute business decision.

Let’s give him the benefit of the doubt; he could be a cracking footballer! He can’t sing, he can’t dance, perhaps he can spin on a sixpence and find the top corner with ease – I guess we’ll see when he turns out for the first team... if he ever does.

Donny have pulled a similar stunt to Macclesfield in the past when their Chairman fancied a chance to play for his beloved club. John Ryan became the oldest footballer to appear for a British club at the age of fifty-two when he fulfilled his dream and came on as sub for Donny against Hereford United in the 89th minute.

Donny were 2-1 down at the time and Ryan smashed in a hat-trick in

sixty seconds to make it 4-2 to Donny. That’s not entirely true (other than the score line being 4-2 to Donny at the final whistle).

He was berated by the fans, ridiculed by the press, scoffed at, laughed at, and fell over a few times but, having said, it was probably one of the highlights of his life!

As for the kid from ‘1D’ (that’s One Direction for any of you that aren’t ‘with it’), he’s not the first and nor will he be the last celeb to dabble in the glorious world of being a football player.

Over the years there have been the following:

• Ian Botham – England cricketer turning out for Scunthorpe United.

• Gordon Ramsay - foul-mouthed chef who alleged that he played for three years at Glasgow Rangers although it is claimed that this was simply to drum up publicity for his restaurants. The likelihood is, he played for the reserves, cleaned the first team players’ boots and then realised he

enjoyed cooking a little more!

• Matt Smith - former Doctor Who who was also a signed professional footballer and turned out in some capacity for Leicester City, Northampton Town and Nottingham Forest before a knee injury scuppered his chance a career in the beautiful game.

• Vinnie Jones - the unforgettable who went the opposite way and had a successful career in football (albeit controversial) and then went into acting. Vinnie’s role as ‘Big Chris’ in Guy Richie’s Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels back in 1998 launched his acting career and he then went on to work in Hollywood Blockbusters Swordfish, Gone In Sixty Seconds, and X-Men: the Last Stand.

We’d all love a player like Vinnie Jones in our side; the no-nonsense, get-stuck-in, tenacious player who fights for every ball and shows the same hunger to win as us fans.

Enjoy today’s adventure!

18 The Mead v Met Police

Last Saturday Arsenal took on Manchester City – no the Premier League season hadn’t kicked off a week early, this was a friendly. In Finland.

For that is what English football’s big boys spend their summers doing these days; jet off around the world to spread their gospel and expand their brand. It brings in the cash and is all very nice for fans in Bangkok, New York, Sydney and Tokyo.

But should they be doing more for the little club on their doorstep?

Now of course it’s not unusual to see a Non-League club taking on a Premier League side in pre-season.

Stoke City recently sent a full first team to Wrexham and even when the star names aren’t in tow it can be a great opportunity to see future talents at their rawest.

We might not have heard of them at the time but there is a certain satisfaction in saying, ‘I remember watching him in pre-season once,’ when they are banging them in on the biggest stages.

But all too often these teams are academy based while the main squad is abroad. It’s rare we see a really big name – a Van Persie, Aguero, Rooney

or Bale – trotting out at a Step 4 club on a Tuesday evening.

Last week we had two stories in The NLP that got us thinking.

The first was Histon answering a Friday night SOS from Spanish side Real Sociedad. La Liga’s fourth best team, who are in the mix for this season’s Champions League, needed a game the next day after their original fixture had been cancelled.

Stutes boss Brian Page had planned on having a training day for his side but couldn’t turn down an elite opposition featuring the likes of ex-Arsenal forward Carlos Vela.

Yes, Histon got an 8-1 pasting but as Page said: “Listening to the players talk about what they experienced in the game I just know it’s going to make us better.”

Then a few days later Ryman Premier Enfield Town got a fantastic opportunity to take on Tottenham Hotspur at the Premier League giant’s training ground.

Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas wheeled out his full team including new signings, Nacer Chadli, Paulinho and Roberto Soldado, the Spanish international who has just arrived from Valencia for a cool £26m. He scored a

hat-trick in an 11-0 win.

Despite the scoreline, talking to Enfield boss Steve Newing you could sense how good the experience was for his players.

Both these games were played behind closed doors, which is understandable. Histon didn’t have time to get everything in place that is needed to get a game on and Enfield were guests of Spurs.

But wouldn’t it be great if the money making machines did pop around the corner in pre-season? Take the marquee names along and help small clubs bring some much needed cash into the coffers.

And while we’re on the subject of money making machines, Sky TV charge £500 for clubs to beam out all the live action – a month!

When we read about the eye-watering sums dished out to Premier League clubs for being rubbish all season and getting relegated, it does make you wonder if a clubhouse attached to a football ground could get a small discount.

After all, it’s the saturated live schedule that is arguably contributing to low attendances at actual football games further down the Pyramid.

“English football’s big boys spend their summers jetting around the world to spread their gospel & expand their brands these days - but

should they be doing more for the little club on their doorstep?”

MATCH REPORTS:

ACTION REPLAY

The Mead hosted Hendon in their first ever Ryman Premier League game, and the visitors dealt them a harsh lesson in clinical finishing to run out as clear winners.

The match saw Hendon have an early corner flicked goalwards which was cleared by Rob Budd, before Chris Seeby also swung a cross in for Hendon that was cleared.

The Mead nearly went ahead after 20 minutes, when a ball broke for Stuart Zanone and he lobbed the Hendon keeper, only to see it rebound off the bar.

However, it was Hendon who snatched the lead ten minutes later, when a cross from Tony Taggart was headed out and Casey McLaren fired a shot from distance wide of Rob Budd in the Mead goal.

The Mead nearly equalised after 35 minutes, when Jay Porter crossed and Stuart Zanone headed just wide. Jack Hopkins then burst forward for the Mead and sent his shot just over, but it was Hendon who remained a goal to the good at half-time.

Early in the second half, Dean Cracknell forced Rob Budd to push his shot wide

and, after the resulting corner was cleared, Lee O’Leary shot over for the visitors.

Shortly after, Chris Edwards fired a free-kick over for the Mead before a passing move from Roberts, Main and Wilson played in Tyrus Gordon-Young (pictured) for the Mead, but his shot was blocked.

Gordon-Young was again in the thick of the action, after he latched onto a long ball forward from the Mead’s back line. Once in the clear, however, he saw his lob sail agonisingly wide of the post.

This would prove crucial, as the visitors went on to score the all-important second goal up the other end with just over ten minutes to go; Anthony Thomas produced a lovely cross which

Jefferson Louis nodded past Rob Budd.

The lead would increase further still before full-time, with Hendon adding a third five minutes from time when a deep cross was hooked back and Anthony Thomas poked the ball home.

The scoring was complete in the final minute of the game as the first visitors to the new Sporting Club Thamesmead grabbed their fourth of the afternoon. Thomas crossed and the ball was hooked back for Brendon Horner to head into the net and seal the victory.

This was a harsh introduction to life in the Ryman Premier League for the Mead, where they were punished for not taking their chances.

THE YOUTH TEAM

Over the next few programmes, the Mead’s Youth Secretary and Welfare Officer, Paul Turner, will introduce us to the Junior sides that the club is running this season.

Thamesmead Town U13s for the current season are looking forward to their first year in Kent Youth football.

Having joined the Mead at the beginning of last season as an established team from Junior Reds, the boys enjoyed a solid campaign in a tough SelKent league resulting in a top four finish.

Meanwhile, the lads also excelled in the London Cup, where they reached the semi-finals only narrowly missing out, in extra-time, on a place in the final.

Under the stewardship of Keith Medlen and Chris Earley, the boys

have continued to develop and play attractive, passing football which has often drawn praise from opponents and officials alike as well as securing many great results. The squad is also developing over time with some new players looking to join for what promises to be an exciting campaign in the fantastic new facilities we now enjoy here at Sporting Club Thamesmead.

We hope to be able to continue the success Thamesmead Town have enjoyed throughout the various levels of the club in both the Kent and Ryman Leagues and, in time, it will be great to see some of the boys progress through the system and go on to play for the first team and beyond!

As with any team, there is a lot to organise before we even get onto the pitch for a match and in the U13s

we are lucky to have a dedicated management team and great parents which helps to keep things running smoothly.

The club also lucky enough to enjoy fantastic sponsorship from PJM Trading Ltd, Jhas Punjabi Restaurant (Mayplace Road East, Barnehurst) and Jhas Catering Services (Plumstead High Street) who have helped us provide both matchday and training kit and equipment for the boys.

Without them, we simply couldn’t do what we do so a heartfelt thanks to each of our sponsors. So here’s wishing our own boys and all of the Thamesmead teams a memorable season ahead, hopefully with a bit of success along the way.

Come on the Mead!

COMMERCIALCORNER

Evening all! Apologies to our guests this evening, but they must have had a welcome like that many many times down the years - the old ones are supposedly always the best!

And please also accept my apologies for not being at Sporting Club Thamesmead for the game this evening, as I have a prior engagement at a charity event in aid of “Teens Unite” - a cancer charity and the Demelza House Childrens Hospice. There’s an awful lot on the planning board at the moment, and hopefully there are a few things thet we’ll be able to announce this coming Saturday when we welcome our friends from the Kent coast to Sporting Club Thamesmead as Margate pay us their first visit to our new facilities. Tonight, sadly, we are without a match sponsor which shatters the 100% start to the season following the kind sponsorship of the Kent Sports News website on our opening day against Hendon.

I’ve been fortunate enough to already have around a quarter of our home games sponsored as you can see on the opposite page which, as we’re still in August, isn’t too bad, but we do need more!

So, if you’d like to cast your eye down the fixture list opposite to see which games are still available, then please either see me on Saturday, or e-mail me on [email protected] if you’d like to sponsor any of the remaining games.

And, whilst on the subject of sponsorship, don’t forget that we also have player sponsorship available for you if you’d like to help out elsewhere - check up those who are still available if you’re interested on page twenty-five and pick your favourite! This week we’re also ordering the first batch of new perimeter advertising boards - I’m hopeful that they may even be in place before Saturday’s game with Margate. Again, if you know of any companies who may want to advertise themselves here at Sporting Club Thamesmead then please do get in touch via the above channels. We’ve already mentioned Saturday’s home game with Margate a few times (so please join us for that one!), but also a reminder that this weekend sees Sporting Club Thamesmead stage “Open Days” on both Saturday and Sunday - so why not come a bit earlier than you would normally and have a good look round our wonderful new facilities?! Here’s hoping that the boys can break their duck tonight and get some points on the board. Cheers,Greenie

NEXT TO VISIT SCT...

MARGATEThe Mead are back in action here at the weekend as Margate make the trip from the Kent coast to Sporting Club Thamesmead.

It’s been an encouraging start to the season for the Gate in the embryonic stages of the campaign, picking up two wins from their opening three matches to sit inside the top ten.

Jointly-managed by goalkeeper Craig Holloway and Simon Osborn, the Kent side recorded a 3-1 win at home to Harrow Borough at the weekend ahead of a trip to Enfield Town tonight, and have boosted their squad with the arrival of Scott Kinch from Welling.

Kinch, a bustling midfielder who has previously caught the eye during a stint with Tonbridge, has told the press that he has joined the Gate in an attempt to win the Ryman Premier League title this season.

Despite some testing campaigns in recent years, the message is a clear indication that Holloway’s men will be

amongst the contenders this season and will provide a tough challenge for the Mead on Saturday afternoon.

“I am not looking for anything less than to be champions,” he told This Is Kent. “There’s a lot of talented, young players here.

“I didn’t sign to play in a struggling team and the play-offs is the least I expect from the group of players we

have.”

Having previously played alongside Holloway whilst the duo were at Welling, Kinch is well aware of what is to be expected of him - but feels confident he can deliver once he takes hold of a starting place.

“I’m not happy sitting on the bench,” he explained. “But I know that when I get my chance, I’ll keep the shirt.”

ON THE ROAD:CRAY WANDERERS

Monday 26th August 2013 Kick-off: 3.00pm Ryman Premier League 13 miles 35 minutes

Head southbound down the A20 road as far as Sidcup. Then use the A232 to Keston Common, turn right into Baston Road (B265), following it for about two miles as it becomes Hayes Street and then Hayes Lane. Cray Wanderers FC is on the right hand side of the road just after the mini roundabout.

These routes may not be the most direct, but will cut out congestion in places such as Lewisham, Catford, Bromley and keep you away from traffic jams, particularly if you are travelling by coach.
