WE PUBLISH LOCAL AND WORLD’S LATEST HAPPENINGS LEADING JAPANESE DAILY ON ISLAND OF HAWAII VOL. XXXIII HILO, HAWAII, T. H. TUES DAY, MARCH 4, 1941 NO. 8886 SIDELIGHTS BE PAID OVER The controversy over the Police Commission Bill is not confined to the territorial legislature where there is bound to be some tall fac- tional struggles before the meas- ure is turned out as a law or is “junked” together with other near- ly enacted plans, but a lively scrap has started between the Hawaii News and the Hilo Tribune Herald. Both publications are getting ra- ther touchy on the question, the latter getting rather peeved be- cause while it was taking a good nap on the side road between the Herald office and the County Au- ditor’s office, the weekly ran away with a large-sized legal ad. For the present, we’ll let you fellows battle over the politico-business angle, taking our position on the sidelines enjoying a good laugh every now and then. However, you Tribune-Herald boys want to learn how to take a licking without handing out any “sour grape” stuff, especially when the small fellow shows you the way to com- petitive business, with or without politics mixed in. It’s a case of being wide awake, that’s all. * * * It’s a wonder that our county attorney didn’t come out with a signed statement in the Tribune Herald of yesterday that he didn’t ask Tommie Sakakihara for a raise in his pay from the present $-800 to $6000 per annum. Of course, with the evening daily waiting for his beck and call, why should he take the trouble of do- ing such a thing. . . it looks like the TH paper is ready to put in anything the eminent CA tells’em. Haven’t taken the trouble of look- ing up the bill as yet to find out its effective date, but even if the bill becomes law, if our C.A.M.P.’s campaign talks mean anything, j isn’t he going to give way to his deputy this coming election time? Something like that was being said during the last campaign if this typepicker’s ears heard right. It’s about time that the deputy C.A. gets a crack at it anyway, for after all, the number one man! owes his present position very much to his number two man. . . It was said negotia- tions for trade agreement were now being carried on between the two governments. British Booty in Africa Following previous reports, Senator Sanji Abe yesterday morning introduced the Plebi- scite Measure for the County of Hawaii Police, which passed first reading by title and was referred to the printing com- mittee. A measure which will give homesteaders in the territory re- lief on payments due the Farm Loan Board by extending their installment payments over a 30- year period and reducing interest to 3% per annum was introduc- ed by Senator V. A. Carvalho. This measure carried the signa- ture of all four Hawaii senators, Sanji Abe, V. A. Carvalho, W.H. Hill and Chas. H. Silva. It was understood that a si- milar measure would be intro- duced in the House by Rep. Thomas Pedro, also of Hawaii, some time today. UNSOLVED WATER SHORTAGE SHOWS NO CONCLUSION In spite of the rainfall last ni- ght, the water suply is still in a critical condition. Nine local En- glish schools and practically all of the Japanese schools were compelled to close down for a pe- riod of two days. Schools affected are Hilo High School, Hilo Intermediate School, Hilo Union School, Hilo Standard School, Kapiolani School, Waiakea Kai School, Waiakea Waena School, Keaukaha School, many local Japanese schools and possibly Piihonua School. Measures are being taken to tap water at the Boiling Pots, which will be divided into the chlorine plant, the county engineer announ- ced. It was estimated that this job will cost the county $2,000. TOKYO, Mar. 4 A new danger of increased tension in the Pacific after settlement of the Thailand-French Indo- China border dispute was foreseen by the popular Miyako Shimbun today. Summerizing editorially the far eastern situation, Mi- yako Shimbun asserted, “Crafty British propaganda telling of the far eastern crisis cannot be simply laughed off. Leading the way of a nerve warfare, Great Britain is creating such a crisis.” The Miyako Shimbun cited increasing British military pressure against Thailand, political maneuvers in Indo-China utilizing both de Gaulist and Vichy adherents, as well as “persistently strengthening anti-Japanese offensive in both military and economic fields.” In Netherlands East Indies, as well as in the southwestern Pacific area, there were in- creasing signs of friction between the proposed Japanese sphere of common prosperity and the zone of British-Ameri- can influence in the event of success of the Japanese media- tion in the Thai-French Indo-China dispute, the daily pointed out. TOKYO, Mar. 4 Giving full credence to the press report of the entry of 20,000 Chungking troops into Burma, the Hochi Shimbun declared that Great Britain who reportedly allowed Chungking troops to enter Burma from where Chiang Kai-shek can protect and facilitate transportation of materi- als to Chungking was “digging her own grave.” The newspaper asserted, “It is inevitable that this will again turn southeaster Asia into a battleground where the Franco-Thailand peace conference brought a glimmer of peace.” The rightist journal said that military collaboration be- tween Britain and Chiang Kai-shek, besides protecting the Burma Route, was aimed at applying pressure to Thailand, and also militarily interfere with Japan’s southward policy. TOKYO, Mar. 4 A new danger of increased tension inthe Pacific after settlement of the Thailand-French Indo- China border dispute was foreseen by the popular Miyako Shimbun today.

Summerizing editorially the far eastern situation, Miyako Shimbun asserted, “ Crafty British propaganda telling o f the far eastern crisis cannot be simply laughed off. Leading the way of a nerve warfare, Great Britain is creating such a crisis.”

The Miyako Shimbun cited increasing British military pressure against Thailand, political maneuvers in Indo-China utilizing both de Gaulist and Vichy adherents, as well as “ persistently strengthening anti-Japanese offensive in both military and economic fields.” In Netherlands East Indies, as well as in the southwestern Pacific area, there were increasing signs o f friction between the proposed Japanese sphere of common prosperity and the zone of British-Ameri- can influence in the event of success o f the Japanese mediation in the Thai-French Indo-China dispute, the daily pointed out.

TOKYO, Mar. 4 Giving full credence to the press reportof the entry o f 20,000 Chungking troops into Burma, the Hochi Shimbun declared that Great Britain who reportedly allowed Chungking troops to enter Burma from where Chiang Kai-shek can protect and facilitate transportation of materials to Chungking was “ digging her own grave.”

The newspaper asserted, “ It is inevitable that this will again turn southeaster Asia into a battleground where the Franco-Thailand peace conference brought a glimmer of peace.”

The rightist journal said that military collaboration between Britain and Chiang Kai-shek, besides protecting the Burma Route, was aimed at applying pressure to Thailand, and also militarily interfere with Japan’s southward policy.

W hen Rosalou Blake, factory girl, becomes engaged to Jerry Thom as, dance-hall singer, her parents oppose the engagement, for they have been unfavorably impressed by Jerry ’s shabby appearance. Unknown to Rosalou, her mother tells him that she has changed her mind and does not want to see him again. Rosalou, deeply hurt when she hears noth ing from him, believes that he has jilted her. A few weeks later, he’s given a contract to sing over the radio and makes an instant hit. Hoping that his success may influence Rosalou to renew their engagement, he screws up his courage to ask her to have dinner with him. In an attem pt to impress her, he takes her to a very smart restaiirant, but she has on old clothes and feels uncomfortable. Then, they are joined by Casper Garveiy, rad io announcer, and his sister Constance, and all go to the broadcasting studio. Constance, smartly dressed and self-assured, snubs Rosalou and tries to take Jerry away from her.

C H A P T E R X IV

KM ITEN Jerry’s broadcast was over, Constance suggested

that every one come to her apartment and “ fling a party.”

T o Rosalou’s d i s m a y . Jerry seemed to like the idea, but she fe lt she’d rather die than go to Constance G arvely ’s home.

She drew him aside. “ Jerry, I can’t go. Please take me home Brst.”

“ W h y? ” he asked, in surprise. “Come along— you’ll enjoy it.”

“ No — for one thing, I 'm not properly dressed.”

She couldn’t very well tell him that, for another thing, she had been humiliated by Constance Garveiy and couldn’t bear to face any further humiliation.■ “ Nonsense! W h at’s wrong with your clothes?” He took her by the arm. “ You come right along or I won't go a step !”

She longed to say, “ Then don’t go, Jerry— please don’t. Let these people go their way, and we'll go ours.”

But she didn’t say that — she hadn’t the courage. I f he wanted to go to Constance’s party, why Jhould she beg him not to?

i, In the end, she numbly went along w ith him, hating herself for her weakness.

CO N S TA N C E ’S apartment w a s furnished in modernistic fash

ion. G ladys and Louise exclaimed o v e r it ecstatically. “ Perfectly adorab le!” “ Connie, how did you ever think up this darling room? I t ’s just too cunning for words!”

Th ey crowded into Constance’s little dressing room to retouch their make-up. Rosalou followed, but was ignored by the other girls as they chattered on and on.

Then, they all trooped back into the liv ing room, where Casper and Jerry were m ixing drinks.

Constance seated herself at the piano and began to play. Presently, the girls started demanding that Jerry sing. He was more than w illing to oblige. He sat on the piano bench at Constance’s side, and soon, she was singing with him.

Rosalou sat stiffly and silently tn a corner o f the room, feeling very unhappy. H ie other two girls sprawled in easj chairs.

Then, when Casper had passed a tray of drinks. Constance stopped playing and touched her glass to Jerry’s.

.“ Mud in eye !” she criedgaily.

Rosalou bad accepted a drink in order not to be conspicuous, but she barely touched her lips to her glass. She hated the stuff. She longed to get her hat and coat, and leave. She couldn’t, of course, but she fe lt utterly alone.

A fte r a while, when Constance and Jerry had le ft the piano, they all sat around and talked. Somehow, the conversation drifted to

their various jobs, and Rosalou learned that Constance wrote copy for an advertising company. How impressive that sounded! How d ifferent from sewing up stockings!

Casper, who had been watching Rosalou all evening and had sensed how she was feeling, now turned to her and asked politely what sort o f work she did. Then, instantly, he could have kicked himself, for he saw by her expression that the question was a mistake.

“ I work in a factory ,” she said quietly.

“ A fa c to ry !” exclaimed Constance. “ Not rea lly! But I suppose you’re a stenographer in the business departm ent?”

“ No,” Rosalou said defiantly, her eyes flashing. “ I operate a m achine. I sew up the backs o f stockings.”

Then, she looked at Constance as though daring her to make fun of her— daring her to say one single derogatory word. Constance, somehow, didn’t dare. Disconcerted, she lowered her eyes and said nothing.

IT W AS late when Rosalou and Jerry finally le ft the apartment.

Now, to add to her misery, she was filled with anxiety. I t must be one o ’clock or after. Her mother would be waiting up for her, aware that she wouldn’t stay out this 4 ate after merely having dinner “ with some o f the girls.”

Jerry was humming as he helped her into his car and climbed in beside her.

“ Have a nice tim e?” he asked, “ T h ey ’re a good gang. W e ’ll chum around with them some m ore.”

Rosalou wanted to say, “ Maybe you will, but I won’t. I ” ll never again be asked out by that crowd — and even i f they did ask me, I wouldn’t go.”

Instead, she said nothing.A fter a moment, Jerry noticed

her silenoe. “ You did have a good time, didn ’t you, Rosie?” •

She hesitated, couldn’t force herself to lie to him. “ Not very. I fe lt so £habby. Jerry. I f I ’d onlyhad on my good clothes ”

“ W hy, I thought you looked lovely just as you are.”

“ T h a t Constance didn ’t think so! I ’ll say she didn ’t ! ”

There was so much bitterness in Rosalou’s tone that Jerry looked at her quickly.

' “ Constance? W h at makes you say that? I thought she was sort o f nice — after you got to know her.”

“ A fte r you got to know her is r igh t!” Rosalou retorted. “You certainly did get to know her. And h ow !”

Jerry was taken aback. W hat had come over Rosalou? This was not the same girl he had m et at the C ircle Dance Hall. W hy, she acted almost as though she hated him. His hope of giving her the ring that nestled in his pocket went glimm ering.

They drove the rest of the way in silence,

WHEN they drew up in fron t oi the Blake house, a light flashed

on in the living room. Rosalou’s heart sank— knew that her m othei had been sitting there in the dark, waiting and watching.

Jerry started to escort her up tc the porch, but she stopped him.

“ No, Jerry — please don’t,” she said quickly. “ Good night.”

“ But wait a m inute.” He caught hold o f her arm. “ W hen can I see you again?”

“ Sometim e.”“ Shall I phone you?”“ No— I mean, I don ’t know ”She pulled away from him and

went running up the walk.He stared a fter her in bewilder

ment, saw her reach the door and open it, then heard Mrs. B lake’s angry voice greeting her just before the door closed.

Slowly, he climbed back into the car and drove a'way.

KURTISTOW N 4-H FOODS CLUB NOTES )

Our second meeting for February was held on the 20th. Our meeting was called to order by our president, Yukie Se- ki, and the roll was called by our secretary, Ruth Kuritani.

Yukie Seki and Amy Nagaue assisted Miss Shimizu in making soft custard and prune pudding. We learned that soft custard and prune pudding are good for us because they contain plenty of calcium and it ’s inexpensive to prepare.

We also practiced on vegetable judging and menu judging. An instruction of how to fill our own records on meals prepared and served was explained.

A health rule of a pint of milk per 4-H club girl has been adopted.

Meeting was adjourned at three o’clock. Masae Shiraki, club reporter.

Showas, who led the league in standing all the way since it was started some seven weeks ago, relinquished the post to the Papaikous last Sunday by half-a-game by their defeat and Paps win.

Showas have but one more scheduled game against Shinmachis left on their schedule, as well as another postponed one against the same opponent, while Papaikous have but one more game against the Olaas.

Should Papaikous win their game against the much-improved Olaas, Showas will have to win both of their games against Shins to tie for the league pennant.

Doc Chuck Ota’s Olaas finally / got going. A fter dropping four of their first round games they came back strong in the second round to" register two straight wins over Shinmachis, 6-3 and Showas, 11-0. Pre-season fav

orites the Olaas were out of the championship picture in their first four games but had they started their season like they are playing in the second round it would indeed have been a different story.

Olaas have two more games left on their schedule against Hinodes and Papaikous. I f they keep up their present playing form it would not come as a surprise to see them victorious in both o f their games.

Shinmachis must win all of their three remaining games and pray that the Showas and Papaikous lose the rest of their games. Although this is hardly probable it ’s Shinmachis’ only hope to end the league with a tie for first place.

Shinmachis started the season like a house on fire winning their first two games but sizzled out fast as they dropped their next three. , - .

pared to checkmate Japanese attempts. Anglo-American support failed to give Vichy courage to say “ No” to the pressure brought by mainly Japan and possibly the Nazi government. And so comes to an end another epochal event in the chain o f events connected with the present, gigantic struggle for power and prestige.

Attention is now again centered in Europe, to the Balkan front chiefly, with the world trying to guess the next move o f Turkey, a power that has been and still is looked upon as strongly pro-British. Bulgaria’s falling in line with the Axis powers was viewed as a foregone conclusion, but with Turkey, the Nazi government will find most likely “ a horse of a different color.”

As fighters, the Turks have a proud and long history back o f them and very much unlike the French, they do not need much coaxing to begin a fight. The Turks realize that under present circumstances, English promise of military support is something that may or may not be coming forth according to schedule, depending very much on how hard pressed the English are at the home front. Should the long- talked-of total attack on the British Isles begin in the immediate future, the Turks know that the British would have very little to offer in the way of military support. Outside of armaments and equipment coming indirectly from the United States, probably through the British, they know that even such help would be some time in coming.

So, the eyes and ears of the world are once more turned to Europe, to the Balkan front and to Turkey in particular. W ill the Turks fight it out, or will international pressure politics succeed again, such as it has in the Tokyo border parley which almost came to end in a blowup until tottering France once again gave in?

M anager W allace Fukuda’s M orim oto Jewelers moved into top place in the championship round o f the H R C 125 pound basketball league by tak in g a

Jewelers now have two straigh t wins to their credit, while Troop 30 and W ailoas have one defeat, each, against their tw o wins, and Pirates have lost one and won one to date. Beavers and Lincolns tra il w ith tw o and three defeats, respectively, the firs t named having won one.

Close defensive w ork and spirit- ed p lay ing m arked the Jewelers vs. Troop 30 gam e w ith both teams striv in g in vain to gain a b ig advantage over the other. Troop 30 led by 5-4 and then 7-6 in the f irs t half; but the th ird period ended in an 11-all tie, and Jewelers wentj on to score 7 more points against the Scouts’ 6 to w in by 18-17.

Benty Tachibana, Sanji W atana- be, and Takuo Sakai led the w in ners w ith 5, 5 and 4 points, respectively, while Jiro Shikuma and Shizuo Shiigi proved to be the losers’ best w ith 6 and 4 points, each.

P ira tes also encountered s t iff opposition from the Beavers but deadly shooting by Shigem i Taka- yam a w ith 10 points, and Jim m y M artin w ith 9 pushed them to v ic tory. Takeo Shimada shone fo r the losers, tanking 11 points by him self, K . H iga accounting fo r 8 points.

A lthough hard-pressed fo r three quarters, W ailoas rea lly got going in the last few minutes o f the ga me to take their game against Lincolns, their 16 points against the losers’ 9 in the final period g iv ing them the w ide m argin. Isam i Okuna starred fo r the winners w ith 14 points, 8 o f which came in the fina l period; while George Oki- naga w ith 12 and H enry Yu w ith 11 sparked the Lincolns.
