Dear Brothers and Sisters:

How is your Lent going? Remember that we still have 3 weeks to go. It’s not too late to take advantage of one of our spiritual activities listed on our webpage and give yourself a gift this Lent! Also, too, please refer to the schedule of Masses for Palm Sunday and the up-coming Holy Days.

Also, you will find in this week’s bulletin the kick-off for the Diocesan Ministries Appeal. Your contributions to the appeal have a dramatic affect on the lives of literally thousands of Long Islanders, some of whom are right here in our own neighborhood. Please consider giving to support the ministries of the Church; the many ministries of Catholic Charities, the Education of Priests, the support of 130 Parish Social Ministry Offices, and so much more. Supporting the appeal is supporting your neighbor in need and helping us to all be ‘One in Mission’ to bring Jesus to others. Please see the page in this bulletin to see how you can give to this year’s Catholic Ministries Appeal.

Our first reading this weekend is from the book of Exodus and recounts the giving of the Ten Commandments to Moses. I was recently in a mixed crowd of people and a young person very naively stated that the Ten Commandments weren’t really valid today. After I picked my jaw up from the floor (!) I asked him first could he list the Ten Commandments. He couldn’t. I asked him to name five. He couldn’t. I asked him to name two. He was able to muster that much. So, as nicely as I could, (you could imagine the steam coming out of my head), I then asked him why he was so ready to dismiss something that he obviously was so unfamiliar with? The Ten Commandments invalid in today’s world?! Really?! If anything, I would say we need them more than ever! They are as valid today as they were 5,000 years ago when the finger of God inscribed them on the stone tablets for Moses. In fact, it is the corner stone of the very laws upon which our nation is set up.

I don’t know which was more shocking to me, the fact that he was so ready to dismiss the Ten Commandments or that he couldn’t quite name them. How about you? Can you name them. I have to admit I never get the order right, but I can recite them. Ignorance of them though is a problem today. Sometimes we choose to be ignorant of God’s commands. In some cases, it’s a conscious choice and a matter of convenience. If I choose to be ignorant of the law, then I think I can sneak by it. I don’t have to keep the Sabbath holy (go to Mass), or I can get around coveting my neighbor’s goods, or steal, or bear false witness, or even murder, and think I get off scot free because I claim ignorance. Let me say this now: ignorance is never an excuse! Especially, not before God! Here we have a case where God has made it abundantly clear what he expects of us. We should know these commands and take them to heart. To be ready to dismiss or pick and choose what we will or will not obey is not an option here. You notice God’s language here – “You Shall/Shall not”. To me that does not sound optional!! On the other hand, sometimes ignorance of God’s commands is just a point of hubris. Like my young friend, some people ignore God’s commands because they mistakenly believe that his commands are outdated or old fashioned and don’t work in a modern world. The fact of the matter is that the truth is the truth. Since when is murder of another human being ever right? Since when is stealing from others ever ok? To pick and choose from any of these commands or their antecedents is just foolishness and if we as a society start to slip down that road chaos will not be far behind. In the end, what God commanded of Moses and Israel is as ever true today as it was then.

I would hate to think that someday we will face St. Peter at the pearly gates, and he asks us to recite the Ten Commandments as part of the entrance exam – and fail! Worse yet, wouldn’t it be terrible if we were excluded from entering those gates because he found no evidence of us following those commandments in reviewing our lives! It’s never too late while there is breath in our lungs!

Peace, Fr. Steve

Lent

Rules for Fast and Abstinence Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days fast and abstinence. Fast means that those between the ages of 18 and 59 limit themselves to one full meal and eat nothing between meals. The other meals on a fast day are light meals. Fridays of Lent are also days of abstinence. Those 14 years of age and older are to abstain from meat.

Stations of the Cross with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament

Join us for the Stations of the Cross on each of the following Fridays: March 12th, 19th, and 26th at 9:30AM (following the 9:00AM Mass). You can also share in the Stations on Friday evenings at the Eucharistic Adoration Hour (7:00-8:00 PM) in the Convent Chapel (Stations begin at 7:30PM) or Wednesdays at 12:30PM at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs.

Children’s Stations of the Cross As we did last year, a Children’s Stations of the Cross will be recorded and made available to the parish via our website.

The Sacrament of Reconciliation Celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation provides us with an encounter with our Compassionate God. Lent is an especially opportune time to experience God’s mercy in this sacramental way. The parish offers weekly celebrations of the sacrament on Saturday (except on Holy Saturday, April 3rd) from 4:00PM to 4:45PM. Additional times for Sacrament of Reconciliation will be announced soon.

Almsgiving One of the Lenten sacrifices is Almsgiving. As a parish pledged to stewardship, we share our resources with those less fortunate than we. During this season of sacrifice we will send a donation of $1,500 ($300 a week from our weekly Lenten collections) to various groups that need our support. The names of the organizations will be placed in the bulletin in the event that you might want to send a personal donation as well.
