Photos #3572 & 3573, Lot #64 USGA – Where it Began In 1894 nine men sat together @ The Calumet Club in New York City at a dinner just before Christmas. They represented five of the most influential clubs in the nation and together they struck an accord. Each agreed to “contribute, not exceeding $50 to a fund, which shall provide for the expenses of formation of this association, and for suitable trophies or prizes for the amateur and open championship”. And so the United States Golf Association was born. Earlier in 1894, two clubs held tournaments that each announced was a national amateur championship. One also included an open championship to determine the best professional golfer of the day. The first championship began Sept. 10th, 1894 @ Newport Golf Club in Rhode Island, and consisted of 20 players from the host club and four other leading clubs of the day – St. Andrews, Yonkers NY, The CC of Brookline, Ma., Chicago Golf Club & Shinnecock Hills on LI, NY., The next month, St. Andrew’s GC, held a Championship and offered a medal, according to the NY Times, to be known as the Amateur Championship Medal for 1894….. The medal is given for the purpose of instituting annual competitions for the amateur golf championship of the United States…. It is confidently hoped that from this amateur contest an interclub association may be formed. An open Championship also held at St. Andrew’s drew only (4) professionals. C. B. Macdonald from the Chicago Golf Club was the favorite in the (28) player amateur field and it turned out he found fault with both amateur tournaments, his protest was that this was no national championship, merely an Invitational tournament sponsored by one club. Only a tournament conducted by an official organization approved by all clubs could be called a national championship, he insisted. MacDonald’s sour grapes became the impetus, and on Dec.22nd, 1894 the meeting was held at the Calumet Club in New York City. In attendance were John Reid and Henry O. Tallmadge of

St. Andrew’s; General T.H. Barber and Samuel L. Parrish of Shinnecock Hills; Laurence Curtis and P. Samuel Sears of the Country Club; C.B. MacDonald and Arthur Ryerson of The Chicago Golf Club and Havemeyer from Newport. At the group’s 1ST Annual meeting on Feb. 8th, 1895 delegates adopted the name “United States Golf Association”. Havemeyer’s donated a $1,000 silver cup and on Oct. 3rd, 1895 with another tournament played over The Newport course, presented it to the winner of the 1st Amateur Championship conducted by the USGA, Havemeyer’s name remains on the Trophy given to the winner of the US amateur each year. The winner of this 1st US Amateur conducted by the newly formed USGA was C.B. McDonald. The reason for this long explanation of the founding of the USGA is to explain the Historical importance of this item we are about to offer !
