Trench Former7
Trench Former by ABT,7 Inc.,manufacturer of Polydrain,7 is apre-engineered, cast-in-placeconcrete forming system for form-ing drainage trenches, catchbasins, utility chases and voids inconcrete placements.
Consisting of:
* Expanded polystyrene (EPS)form sections
* Embedded steel inlay rails
* Patented no-float legs
* Grates or covers
The system eliminates the needfor heavy forming materials, key-ways and waterstops normally re-quired with trench drains andutility chases.
Standard Design
TF-14 former shapes are madefrom lightweight expanded poly-styrene (EPS) to provide the mostwidely used trench size, 12" widewith a 1.04% built-in slope andradius bottom.
U.S. Patents #5,348,421; #5,393,171; #5,281,051;
#5,478,169; #5,573,350 and #5,702,204. Other
patents pending. Trench Former is a registered trade-
mark of ABT, Inc.
Custom Design
Trench Former is available in vari-ous widths, depths, slopes, andtrench bottom configurations. Forcustom Trench Former needs con-tact our technical sales supportteam at 1-800-438-6057.
Precision Engineering
Precision is engineered into theproduct, eliminating the need forhighly skilled and expensive labor.Accurate to within 1/16 in., the for-mer shapes have longitudinalgrooves for alignment, and inte-gral deforming grooves for easyremoval.
Low Cost
When using the Trench FormerSystem, installation costs can bereduced by 33% or higher. Itrequires no heavy machinery(except for excavation) and isconstructed in a fraction of thetime of previous methods.
Easy Installation
A non-structural anchoring slabplaced over the no-float legsholds the formwork firmly in placewithout elaborate anchoring.
Concrete can then be placedmonolithically, eliminating coldjoints, keyways, and waterstopmaterial. Forms can be removedin 24 hours or can be left in placeindefinitely, preventing unsafeopen pits on the job site. Thereare no piping alignment problemsbecause piping is butted to theformwork and cast-in-place.
Environmentally Sound
The EPS forms are manufac-tured without CFC’s and can bedisposed of safely and easily. It’salso recyclable and makes a highquality fuel for commercial incin-erators as well as being land fill-able.
Low Maintenance
The permanent system compo-nents are designed to be mainte-nance friendly. Quarterly inspec-tions are recommended, but thebuilt-in slope, radius bottom, andlow roughness co-efficient help toeliminate debris buildup.
FEATURES TF-14 3Toll Free: 800-438-6057
TF-14 is the standard stockTrench Former system. Its compo-nents are made in the most com-monly constructed size. TF-14consists of 8 ft. pre-sloped formsegments. The 24 stock segmentscan be used together to create acontinuously sloped 192 ft. trench.
Each segment is engineered toa 1/8 in. per ft. slope (1.04%). TheEPS forms create 12 in. widetrenches with a 6-1/2 in. radius bot-tom and a 14 in. grate seat area.
They have integral deforminggrooves for easy removal and fulllength longitudinal grooves for co-planar rail spacing and alignment.Six non-sloping, 4 ft. or 8 ft. longforms are available throughoutthe system to create longer con-tinuous runs.
The steel angle rails includeanchoring studs welded on 11 in.centers to the outside corners.U-shaped no-float legs (#4 rebar)attach to rail clamps on each rail.Each rail end is designed toaccept a rail clamp which con-nects adjacent rail segments.
Prefabricated L-rail and T-railassemblies allow for field installa-tion of 90° turns anywhere in thepre-sloped layout.
Outlet piping is butted to an an-nular groove made in the EPSform prior to concreting. Fortrench junctions or for large outletsizes, four catch basins are provid-ed. A wide selection of retainablegrates and solid covers is avail-able for various loadings.

INSTALLATION TF-14 9Toll Free: 800-438-6057
ExcavationExcavation must provide for 6 inches (minimum) on bothsides of the former and 10-1/2 inches (minimum) on thebottom. Structural slabs may require additional excavation.Consult your structural engineer. Bottom allowance includes4-1/2 inches of clearance for the no-float U-legs andanchoring slab. Excavate to match former numbers pro-vided. Each 8 foot section has 2 equal length U-legs, so theexcavation should be a series of step-down sections.
AssemblyApply the Former Release to the bottom and sides of all theformers. DO NOT USE PETROLEUM BASED FORMRELEASE - it will severely attack the EPS foam. Lay out theformer and rail sections along the excavation in the propersequence. Former and U-legs are color-coded for easyassembly. Match color on U-legs to the colored part numbermarked on the end of former. Assemble all rails, legs, andformers. Connect rail clamps to the rails, one on an end andone in the middle. With the former upside-down, push eachrail into the groove of the former. Attach the U-legs to therails by inserting each U-leg into the holes of opposing railclamps. Use set screws to hold the U-leg in position. Turnthe former upright and install a Cross Tie tightly across railsto ensure a snug fit and precise grate seat dimension. Joinsections together into 16 foot lengths using the rail clamps.
Component PlacementBegin installation at the outlet / deep end of the trench.Attach a length of supporting lumber near each joint (atanchor studs). Hold the top of rail to finished grade andattach lumber to grade stakes. See Figure 1. Butt the nextsection against the one in position, attach to rail clamps,and then set to elevation. To assist in alignment once sec-tions are in place, 2 x 4’s can be fitted inside the alignmentgroove and nailed to the supporting lumber.
Concrete PlacementPlace a concrete anchoring slab wall-to-wall and end-to-endin the bottom of the excavation. Cover the U-legs with 2inches (minimum) of concrete. Allow this slab to set hard,and then remove the supporting lumber. See Figure 2.Monopour trench bottom and walls, vibrating at the rails forgood consolidation. While finishing concrete, remove CrossTies by cutting in half, turning 90N and lifting them out. SeeFigure 3.
DeformingAfter 24 hours, you can deform the trench. Drive a pry barbetween former and trench floor, exerting upward force. Thecenter V-shaped section will break free and can be easilyremoved. Pull remaining pieces from the wall and remove.See Figure 4.
