Texas National Guard Soldier killed in

Afghanistan

cAmP mABRY, texas – the texas National Guard is releasing a photo of staff sgt. Nelson David trent, a texas Army National Guard soldier killed Dec. 13, near Kandahar, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained in a roadside bomb attack.

A memorial service honoring trent’s loyalty, dedication and service to the texas National Guard, his state and nation will be held in tyler, texas before christmas. this event is not open to members of the media. trent will then be interred at Arlington National cemetery in Arlington, VA after the new year.

trent is survived by his parents, wife and two children.

LANCASTER ISD receives the TIF Project Grant

the Lancaster Independent school District is among eight districts in the state selected to receive the texas teacher Incentive Fund (tIF) Project Grant at esc 18 this year. this grant is one of only three in the state funded by the U.s. Department of education (UsDe) to improve educator effectiveness.

“we’re excited to be a recipient of this multi-million dollar grant,” Lancaster IsD superintendent Dr. michael mcFarland said. “this investment means that we will have the opportunity to design a system to ensure that we have the highest quality of principals and teachers.”

Lancaster IsD will receive more than $4 million over the five-year grant period.

“this grant supports our efforts to build a new 21st century Human

capital management system that will ensure that we have an effective teacher in every classroom and an effective principal in every school.”

Dr. mcFarland said. “these funds will give us the opportunity to design and refine an incentive-based accountability system that is focused on measuring teacher effectiveness by student improvement gains as well as through observations.”

Recently, educational leaders throughout the state have been calling for reform in the areas of teacher evaluation and accountability.

“the current model of teacher evaluation and accountability has become obsolete,” Dr. mcFarland said. “In Lancaster IsD, we are engaging in extensive reform throughout our system to create a new model that will better prepare our schools and principals to deliver a 21st century education. By building the capacity of our teachers and the quality of our principals, we will in turn increase the choices and opportunities of our students and ensure that they truly graduate with more than a high school diploma.”

Dr. tammy Kreuz, executive Director of the texas center for educator effectiveness, said that they are excited to partner with Lancaster IsD on the 2012 texas tIF Project.

“the district has built a talented educator workforce through targeted reform efforts that will enable them to increase achievement for all of their students,” Dr. Kreuz said. “this grant will provide the district an opportunity to further their goals through a customizable strategy that will maximize teacher and principal effectiveness.”

the 2012-13 year will operate as a time of planning for the project team to work with stakeholder groups of teachers, principals and officials in the district. The stakeholder input will be used to develop a customized Human capital management system (Hcms) which will include a new teacher and principal evaluation system, an integrated data management system to assess student growth, professional development opportunities and a performance pay system for educators.

In addition to Lancaster IsD, the following districts will also receive funding from the texas TIF Project Grant: Anderson-Shiro cIsD, Athens IsD, coldspring-oakhurst cIsD, Grand Prairie IsD, Lytle IsD, New caney IsD, and Richardson IsD. According to the UsDe, the recipient districts will receive a combined total of $40.7 million over the five-year grant period.

“we believe that a new model is necessary in order for us to truly deliver a 21st century education for our students,” Dr. mcFarland said.

“Not only do we believe it, but through this funding we are acting on it.”

Texas unemployment rate falls to 6.2

percent in November

AUstIN — the texas unemployment rate fell to 6.2 percent in November, down from 6.6 percent in october and 7.3 percent at the start of 2012.

the unemployment rate in texas remains well below the national rate of 7.7 percent. texas employers added 22,100 total nonfarm jobs in November for a total of 278,800 jobs added over the year.

“texas employers have added 278,800 jobs over the past 12 months with growth in 10 of 11 industry sectors during that

period,” said texas workforce commission (twc) chairman Andres Alcantar. “twc is committed to working with our local workforce development boards and other partners to deliver quality workforce solutions that contribute to economic success.”

eight out of 11 major industries in texas added jobs in November.

trade, transportation, and Utilities led the way with 20,600 jobs added over the month—the largest monthly jump ever seen in that industry.

Leisure and Hospitality employment grew by 6,500 positions in November.

this industry has now experienced growth for four consecutive months.

Leisure and Hospitality has added 49,900 jobs since November 2011.

education and Health services added 4,700 jobs over the month, totaling 45,700 jobs added over the year.

“Private sector employers continue to lead the way to growth and prosperity in texas,” said twc commissioner Representing employers tom Pauken. “we’ve seen 266,400 private sector jobs added in texas over the past year, and we’re maintaining a 3.0 percent annual growth rate.”

the midland metropolitan statistical Area (msA) had the lowest November unemployment rate in the state at 3.0 percent. the odessa msA came in second at 3.6 percent, and the Amarillo msA third at 4.1 percent (not seasonally adjusted).

Services to create 500 jobs in Irving

AUstIN – Gov. Rick Perry has announced teKsystems Global services is creating a new It center in Irving, along with 500 jobs and $4.8 million in capital investment. the state is providing $1.1 million through the texas enterprise Fund (teF) to close the deal on this new facility and this job creation.

“Here in texas, we’ve found the right combination of low taxes, reasonable regulations, skilled workforce and competitive incentives that have helped our state create jobs, attract businesses and provide opportunities for our citizens,” Gov. Perry said. “companies like teKsystems know that when they choose texas, they get access to a world-class workforce and an economic environment that’s second to none.”

teKsystems Global services provides services in software development and maintenance, quality assurance and testing, etL and report conversion and help desk outsourcing to its clients, which include 82% of Fortune 500 companies. this new facility will focus on the development and maintenance of mission critical software applications to complement the company’s existing core services in key vertical markets.

wAsHINGtoN (NNPA) – In the late 1960s, Black revolutionary H. Rap Brown, now known as Jamil Abdullah al-Amin,

was often quoted as saying violence is “as American as cherry pie.” more than

40 years after the student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) firebrand made that pronouncement, the numbers supports his assertion.

According to the Brady campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, nearly 100,000 people in the U.s. are shot each year in murders, assaults, suicides, accidents or by law enforcement officials. Of the 31,593 who died in 2008 from gun violence, 2,179 were murdered; 18,223 killed themselves; 592 were killed accidently; 326 were killed during police intervention and 273 died, but the intent was unknown.

the report shows that 66,769 survived gun injuries, including 44,466 who were injured in a gun attack; 3,013 were injured during a suicide attempt; 18,610 were shot accidently and 679 were shot during police intervention.

on average, according to the Brady Campaign:

· every day, 270 people in America, 47 of them children and teens, are shot in murders, assaults, suicides, accidents and police intervention;

· every day, 87 people die from gun violence, 33 of them murdered;

· every day, eight children and teens die from gun violence;

· every day, 183 people are shot, but survive their gun injuries and

· every day, 38 children and teens are shot, but survive their gun injuries.

every time there is mass murder, there are flashbacks to earlier killings: The University of texas tower sniper in 1966, the 1986 post office shootings in Edmond, oklahoma that inspired the term “going postal,” the columbine High massacre in 1999, the deadly shooting spree at Virginia tech in 2007, the Fort Hood texas mass murder in 2009, the weird-look on the face of Jared Loughner after he fatally

shot six people and injured 12 others last year, including congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, in tucson.

this year has seen an unusual number of high-profile shootings. In April, three Black people were killed and two more injured in tulsa as part of a hate crime. In July, 12 people were killed and 58 were injured in Aurora, colorado at the midnight premier of the Batman movie, “the Dark Knight Rises.” And in August, seven people were killed at three injured at a sikh temple in a milwaukee suburb.

other terrorizing acts also come to mind, including timothy mcVeigh’s 1995 bombing of the federal building in oklahoma city and ted Kaczynski, the Harvard-educated “Unabomber,” who was sentenced to eight consecutive life sentences in 1998 for killing three people and injuring 23 others over a 20-year period.

And, now a mass slaughter at an elementary school.

At a prayer vigil sunday night in Newtown, conn. for the 20 children, most of them 6- or 7-years-old, and six adults, President obama said it is time to explore what can be done to curb gun violence.

He said, “can we honestly say that we’re doing enough to keep our children – all of them – safe from harm? can we claim, as a nation, that we’re all together there, letting them know that they are loved, and teaching them to love in return? can we say that we’re truly doing enough to give all the children of this country the chance they deserve to live out their lives in happiness and with purpose? I’ve been reflecting on this the last few days, and if we’re honest with ourselves, the answer is no. we’re not doing enough. And we will have to change.”

In the wake of the latest shooting spree, even some longtime National Rifle Association supporters are saying we need more stringent gun laws.

senator sen. Joe manchin (D-west Va.) – who has an “A” rating from the NRA – said: “I just came with my family from deer hunting,” manchin said on msNBc’s “morning Joe.” “I’ve never had more than three shells in a clip. sometimes you don’t get more than one shot anyway at a deer. It’s common sense. It’s time to move beyond rhetoric. we need to sit down and have a common-sense discussion and move in a

reasonable way.”even Rupert murdock, ceo of News

corp., asked rhetorically on his twitter account, “When will politicians find courage to ban automatic weapons?” murdock’s media empire includes Fox News, which strongly advocates pro-gun positions.

Although it may not seem like it, America is less violent than it was two decades ago, according the FBI crime statistics. the homicide rate, which peaked at 10 per 100,000 in the early 1990s, is now about half that rate. However, the same can’t be said of mass murders, defined as involving the deaths of at least four people.

James Alan Fox, professor of criminology, law and public policy at Northeastern University in Boston, said there is no pattern with mass murders. He said there were 645 mass-murder events between 1976 and 2010.

even at its greatly reduced level, the U.s. is far more violent than other high-income countries. Data from the world Health organization for 2003 from 23 heavily populated high-income countries showed that the U.S had far higher rates of firearm deaths than the other 22 countries studied.

In fact, of the 23 countries examined, 80 percent of all firearm deaths occurred in the U.s., 86 percent of all women killed by firearms were females living in the United states and of all children 14 and under killed by firearms, 87 percent of them were in the U.s.

speaking in connecticut, obama said, “since I’ve been president, this is the fourth time we have come together to comfort a grieving community torn apart by a mass shooting. the fourth time we’ve hugged survivors. the fourth time we’ve consoled the families of victims. And in between, there have been an endless series of deadly shootings across the country, almost daily reports of victims, many of them children, in small towns and big cities all across America – victims whose – much of the time, their only fault was being in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

As residents of north texas we are privileged to live in one of the most inviting sections of the country. I am

frequently asked by others what it is like to live in the place that we proudly call home. I am delighted each time that I am asked as I am able to speak about our robust economy, the friendliness of our residents, our abundant open spaces, our world-class museums, the quality of our institutions of higher learning and the inventiveness of our working class and business communities. one of the things that make us such an exceptional community, I believe, is our public transit system, DARt. It transports nearly 230,000 people each day and services a 700-square-mile area. Public transportation is extremely crucial to our residents who travel to and from work, to those who are on outings with their families, and to tourists who are visiting our region and may not have access to automobiles. For these and many other reasons I have been a supporter of DARt, and am delighted to have played a supportive role in the U.s. Department of transportation’s recent decision to award a $120 million direct loan to DARt so that it might continue the third phase of its light rail orange Line project. the Department of transportation has committed approximately $796 million to DARt since 1996. As the highest ranking member of congress from texas on the House committee on transportation and Infrastructure, I insist that our region receives sufficient funding to meet its transportation needs. And like most things we begin in texas, I believe that DARt will one day become the premier public transportation system in the country. If you have not used it, take a ride and see for yourself!

“Folks. Not a Good Story to Report!!!! Long time African American Community Icon and Friend, Soul 73/KKDA, has been sold to Koreans, and Korean programing will start soon. Tragic for us!!??

Asians control the Black Hair Care market and Blacks have difficulty entering the business or getting products thru them.

Asians own Big T Brazzar (sic) and we have difficulty renting space or maintaining

shop there. They even bought a popular hamburger shop near The Coaches Corner.

Not to mention donut shops, nail shops and cleaners!! Right in our communities!!! We support their homes in Flower Mound and points North. I know, there are those who live in points south and have local businesses and I teach some of their kids.

The owner of the cleaners, Lee, on the corners of Lp 12/Hampton, and in the shopping center near RAC, charged my debit card $432.00, for a $4.32 cleaning bill, and kept my money, he said, at the headquarters in St. Louis, MO, five days. Complaining got me nothing but promises to return my money, and lastly I was told,” I don’t need you or your business, and ‘don’t care if you come back or not!’ My money was re-deposited the Tuesday, after the problem occured (sic) that previous Thursday. I did not have $4.32

on me and used my debit card for the lowly amount.”

over the past few days, I have heard similar sentiments as folks decried the sale of the radio station.

Folks wanted to know if the reports were accurate and what should they do.

R e f l e c t i n g back, I remember embracing KKDA upon my arrival to the metroplex in

1981. I enjoyed not only the music,but the personalities: Willis Johnson, Lynne Haze, steve Ladd, Da wolf, cousin Linnie, and others. It was soul 73, where you’ve got a friend!

Little did I know then that almost a decade later I would be offering my commentary, “one African American woman’s opinion,”

to the KKDA listeners.then I joined host shaun Rabb for the

debut of Reporters Roundtable, which very shortly became Reporters Roundtable with Cheryl Smith for the next 22 years, followed by Speak Out with Judge Maryellen Hicks.

since 1981 I have looked to soul 73 to provide me with empowering information and the music I “grew up listening to.” People who worked for the station were involved and had their fingers on the pulse of the community.

there was good music, informative talk and late-breaking news. Before any others had broadcast the sale and closure of the Dallas Times Herald, you heard it on KKDA.

when it appeared that Dallas was about to be at war, KKDA had the interview with Dallas county commissioner John wiley Price.

the station even had ongoing coverage of the oJ simpson trial!

Listeners were surprised one sunday morning when they tuned in to hear the Hon. min. Louis Farrakhan’s taped message, only to hear him in a live interview with yours truly.

KKDA was so focused on the issues effecting its listeners that it wasn’t uncommon to hear personalities from “rival” stations if they were bringing pertinent information.

controversy, steven spielberg's movie Lincoln, has unchained the Legend of Lincoln to new mythic heights, without

due challenge. Just as organizations like the NAAcP denounced conservative-revisionist textbooks in texas in 2010, they should denounce liberal-bent historical accounts that either ignorantly or deliberately fail to concede that "Abraham Lincoln did

the right thing for the wrong reasons." or as Lerone Bennett aptly conveyed in the title of his book, Lincoln was in effect – Forced Into Glory.

Nevertheless, the fictions of Lincoln enrich the commercial and moral value of Americana more than the facts of Lincoln. As Bennett writes, Lincoln "is a national industry involving hundreds of millions of dollars a year . . . and the thousands of people who profit materially and the millions who profit psychologically and culturally are not going to stop."

so what really happened with Lincoln and the civil war? considering the racism that abounds today, it's inconceivable that 3 million Whites would fight gung-ho and 600,000 would unselfishly die for a "Black cause" way-back 150 years ago. And if Lincoln factually wrote the emancipation Proclamation to genuinely "free Africans" after 2½ centuries, its contents would

seemingly be more etched into African-American minds. But if you ask around, it would be a near-miracle to find anyone (Black academics and leaders included) who can even paraphrase any portion of it, much less clarify its contents. Isn't that strange?

An unlikely but well-accredited vetting source of the Legend of Lincoln is President obama himself, who as a senator in a 2005 Time interview remarked: "I cannot swallow whole the view of Lincoln as 'the Great emancipator' . . . I am fully aware of his limited views on race. Anyone who actually reads the emancipation Proclamation knows it was more a 'military Document' than a clarion call for justice. scholars tell us too that Lincoln wasn't immune from political considerations and that his temperament could be indecisive and morose."

Neither due justice nor the ambiguousness of the real Lincoln can be condensed here, but his "racism" or "limited views on race" as obama diplomatically cites, is evidenced in a 1858 speech when he candidly said he was not "in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races . . . and I just as much as any other man am in favor of the superior position assigned to the white race."

examples of his "crudity" or not being "immune from political considerations" as obama intimates, is found in his letter to New York tribune editor, Horace Greely in August 1862 stating: "My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it

by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone, I would also do that. what I do about slavery, and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save the Union."

the following month, the real Lincoln proposed a shrewd Preliminary Proclamation to emancipate Africans in confederate areas. the caveat though was that confederate states could retain slavery,

providing they complied to return to the Union by January 1, 1863. However, should the war have ended beforehand, the deal would be rescinded and confederates would lose both the war and slavery.

In terms of the emancipation Proclamation being a "military document," obama is corroborating Lincoln's strategy to employ the document as a war measure to disrupt the south's stability and slave-economy

($4 billion in human capital alone in 1860's dollars) and offset the Fugitive slave Act of 1850 (which federally mandated that fugitive Africans be returned or abettors faced treason). It only "theoretically" freed Africans in confederate states where he lacked enforcement.

Lastly, the moral notion that Lincoln waged the civil war "to end slavery" is negated by his swift removal of General John Fremont for "freeing Africans" in missouri in 1861, expressing: "We didn't go into the war to put down slavery, but to put the flag back . . . for I never should have had votes enough to send me here if the people had supposed I should try to use my power to upset slavery."

In this microwave society with 10-second attention spans, fictional characters like Django are short-lived. My Son Met A Girl and Married Her Two

Weeks LaterDear Gwendolyn:my son is not speaking to me. He has completely

distant himself. I have worked for the last twenty-five years two jobs to provide for him. His father left me when he was only two years old.

This is the problem: My son dated and lived with a lady for four years, then last year met a girl and married her two weeks later. she is not a nice person, but if my son is happy, I’m happy. my son is angry because I will not keep her children during the day and not even during nights or weekends.. she has four children – the youngest being nine months old. she had never been married.

Gwendolyn, I recently retired and do not care to keep the children. she does not work. why can’t she keep her own children? I intend to enjoy my retirement. I am making reservations to do some traveling and may go on a cruise with some friends. my daughter-in-law thinks I don’t love her children because they are step-grandchildren to me. that is untrue. what should I do?

Dear Joan:Ignore her. Give no more thought to your son’s

problem. she must have been something else to cause him to marry her within two weeks. then on the other hand, your son just happened to be the shy, timid fool who came along. After all, no other man married her. I don’t say this because she has children. I make this assumption because she is lazy and was only looking for a provider.

Let me tell you this: Retirement is to be enjoyed and after working two jobs, Joan, you definitely need to focus on your happiness.

Because she has four children and no income whatsoever, the next issue will be your son wanting to borrow your money to provide for his wife and her children. Do not get into that headache. Keep your money.

I find it so amazing how men can date a woman for years, then overnight —marry a stranger.

rare—children with cancer account for less than 1 percent of all new cancer cases in the United states. But did you know that cancer is the second leading cause of death (after accidents) among children ages 1 to 14?

It is estimated that in 2012 in the United states, more than 12,000 children (ages 0 to 14) will be diagnosed with cancer and more than 1,300 will die from it.

But there is good news, too. over the past 20 years, childhood cancer deaths overall have dropped, and many more children are surviving a cancer diagnosis.

For example, only 58 percent of children ages 0 to 14 diagnosed in 1975–1977 lived at least 5 years after diagnosis, whereas it is estimated that more than 80 percent of those diagnosed today will make it to the 5-year mark. this improvement is due to remarkable advances in treatment and to the

high participation of children with cancer in clinical trials.

Although African American children are less likely than white children to develop cancer, their 5-year survival rate is poorer, according to the National cancer Institute’s (NcI) surveillance, epidemiology, and end Results Program.

the most common types of childhood cancer are leukemias (blood cell cancers) and cancers of the brain and central nervous system.

the causes of childhood cancers are largely unknown, and researchers are trying to learn about possible risk factors.

Despite the improvements in outcomes overall, some types of childhood cancer

Parkland employee heads to Austin when the 83rd Legislative session

is called to order on Jan. 8, 2013, toni Rose will take her seat as one of 43 freshmen elected to the texas House of Representatives. she will go from serving clients as part of Parkland Health & Hospital system’s behavioral health team in the Dallas county Jail to serving her constituents in District 110.

As a long-time resident of District 110, Representative-elect Rose has advocated for a stronger educational system, affordable health care and better jobs for her community. As a trained mental health professional, she is particularly concerned about the disparities in access to mental health services in her community and throughout texas.

“working as a mental health liaison in the jail has provided me with an opportunity to see things from a different perspective,” Representative-elect Rose said. “I know what it’s like trying to find community resources when a lot of the funding has been cut. Because of my job at Parkland, I’ll be able to bring a different voice to the table.”

more than 100,000 people are booked into the Dallas county Jail each year making it the seventh largest jail in the U.s. of the 6,100 inmates who are in the jail on a daily basis, more than 1,400 need psychiatric care. the average length of stay for inmates in the Dallas county Jail is 29 days; 46 percent are released within 72 hours. eighty-four percent are male, 16 percent are female and 22 to 33 percent of the jail population has mental health conditions.

Rep. Rose has spent her entire life in public service. she spent a number of years working in child Protective services and the last 11 in the behavioral health sector of the jail – first with the University of texas medical Branch, Galveston and then with Parkland when it took over health care services in 2006.

“I believe I can represent the people of District 110 because of my past and current involvement in the community. I am aware of the needs of the district,” she said, noting that she is looking forward to being a voice for those who do not have a seat at the table.

to commemorate this milestone, the Postal service introduced a limited-edition Forever stamp today at the National Archives in washington, D.c., which houses the historic document. the emancipation Proclamation Forever Stamp is now on sale at Post Offices nationwide, and can be purchased online at www.usps.com/stamps or by phone at 800-stamp24 (800-782-6724).

the emancipation Proclamation Forever stamp represents freedom and is the first in a series of three Civil Rights stamps to be released in 2013.

the emancipation Proclamation stamp is the latest stamp to be issued by the Postal service in tribute to civil rights events or leaders. Kirk cameron, opens with the scene that shows cameron’s character, Fire capt. caleb Holt, reprimanding a subordinate after they return from fighting a fire.

“eric, he’s got a right to be upset with you,” the captain says immediately after another fireman rebukes that subordinate, eric Harmon (Jason mcLeod). “You left him in a dangerous spot and tried to be a hero.”

“But captain,” eric responds, “I thought I heard someone calling for help.”

“It was coming from outside the building,” the captain interjects.

“But it was so dark, I mean I couldn’t see anything,” eric tries to explain.

“that’s why you stay with your

partner,” the captain says. “He had no choice but to assume that something happened to you and you needed his help. You never leave your partner — especially in a fire.

“You give him some time and then give him an apology,” he says. “And make it sincere.”

“Yes, sir,” eric responds. capt. Holt pats eric on the back and

then walks off. while the captain approaches his

job of putting out literal fires with great passion and wisdom, the film is about how he lacks that same zeal and is ignorant when it comes to extinguishing the metaphoric fires that threaten his marriage.

this movie is an accurate depiction of so many real-life marriages. Husbands and wives, in many marital relationships, put their hearts and souls into their careers or rendering aid to others while failing to protect their own “partners” in marriage.

During their visit, their son-in-law

Phil (tom everett scott) receives news that the new smart home product he designed is being recognized at a conference out of town and he invites Alice to join him on the trip, since the two working professionals have not had a grown-up vacation in years.Diane seizes the moment and convinces Alice to let her and her father take care of their three grandchildren while Alice and Phil are out of town. Artie, who is initially not in love with the idea because of what he deems as the impossible demands of his daughter’s type-A personality and high maintenance, modern-day parenting rules, eventually gives in. Determined to prove to Alice that she made the right choice leaving the children with them, Artie and Diane take on the challenges of dealing with eldest child and overachiever Harper’s preoccupation with acing an upcoming music audition, concerns about not getting into the right college and an age-appropriate crush on a boy at school; middle child turner’s speech impairment and youngest son, Barker’s never-ending shenanigans and behavior issues.Intertwined with this main plot is a subplot involving Artie’s undercover efforts to land a sports commentator position with esPN, which happens to be Alice’s employer. Needless to say, after a series of unfortunate, yet comical mishaps, Artie is ready to call it quits when he finally realizes how much his daughter Alice loves and admires him in spite of their differences in parenting styles, and that in fact Alice would not be the successful wife, mother and professional she is

when I attended the screening of DJANGo UNcHAINeD, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Knowing that it was a Quentin Tarantino film set in the 1800’s during the slavery era in America, I knew I would have to brace myself for some pretty brutal violence. Nevertheless, I was anxious to see what the buzz was about.

Well, I can honestly say this film was a wild ride and one of the best films I saw in 2012.

written and directed by Academy Award winner Quentin Tarantino, DJANGO UNCHAINED is a fictional, Western story of vengeance and love. Django, played by Academy Award-winning actor Jamie Foxx, is a slave whose freedom is bought by German dentist-turned-bounty-hunter Dr. King schultz (christoph waltz), to assist him in tracking down and identifying Django’s former slave owners, the homicidal Brittle brothers. once Dr. schultz frees Django, he offers him what appears to be the opportunity of a lifetime — to join him on his bounty hunting mission to kill slave owners for their criminal offenses and get paid for it. Quite naturally,

this offer is like symphony orchestra music to Django’s ears but he in turn presents one stipulation — that after he helps Dr. Schultz find these wanted men, Schultz would help Django locate and rescue his wife, Broomhilda, from her current slave plantation. (Django and Broomhilda had previously been separated as punishment for attempting to run away from another slave plantation). the two men agree

and their adventure begins. Before they set out on their first joint mission, Dr. Schultz

initiates an extreme makeover of Django, transforming him from an unacculturated, unsure, illiterate slave to a well-groomed, horseback-riding, sharp shooting bounty hunter with a strong command of the english language and a rather brazen disregard for the status quo in the south.

Fast forward through several fatal gun shot wounds and a growing pile of bad guy corpses, and we arrive at the heart of this feature film’s love story. There is absolutely no doubt with the audience that Django loves his wife and will endure anything, regardless of how unspeakable, to be reunited with her.

After, Dr. schultz and Django track Broomhilda to a wicked plantation known as candyland, they devise a plan to befriend the plantation’s owner, a contemptuous Francophile named monsieur calvin candie, played by Academy Award nominee Leonardo Dicaprio, to gain access to the plantation and rescue Django’s beloved wife.

It is at candyland where fellow oscar-nominee samuel L. Jackson’s butt-kissing, master-pleasing character, stephen, is introduced. with the help of special effects makeup and a walking cane, we see Jackson on screen as an aged, irascible curmudgeon who we end up hating by the end of the film because of his character’s role in exposing Django and schultz’s scheme to candie. Right when the audience is ready to applaud a passionate, emotional reunion between Django and Broomhilda, the script is flipped, literally, and all hell breaks loose.

Just as all hope seems lost and the lives of the unlikely duo are at stake, the film’s climax commences with the obligatory, cringe-worthy blood bath that we’ve come to love (or hate depending on your tolerance level for graphic violence) in tarantino’s work.

with a lengthy running time of two hours and 45 minutes, the engaging story provides a couple of last minute twists that lead viewers to what feels like the end of the film but, alas, the story takes you in a different direction before it actually fades to closing credits. However, you will have to see the film for yourself to see how the story ends and whether Django gets his wife back.

DJANGo UNcHAINeD is an entertaining action/adventure film that though it is set against the backdrop of slavery in America’s southern states and deals with a very serious atrocity in this nation’s history as it relates to the sub-human treatment of African Americans from the time they were brought against their will to America until President Abraham Lincoln abolished slavery in 1863, I was able to

watch the film and enjoy it purely as art. Nothing more. Nothing less. And as great films often do, it took me through a range

of emotions as there were scenes that made my eyes water, scenes that made me chuckle and scenes that furrowed my brows.

I watched the film with an open mind and did not enter the theater with a chip on my shoulder or anger in my heart about slavery and I quite frankly was so enthralled with the parallel storylines about vengeance and true love that I was not focused on how many times the “n” word was spoken, perhaps because I recognize that the reality of that era is that the “n” word wAs used frequently by slave owners. Period. Being ticked off about it is not going to undo history.

As a matter of fact, because of the origins of the “n” word, I am more appalled at the frequent use of the word in modern-day films depicting gang violence and Black-on-Black crime than in a period piece such as DJANGo UNcHAINeD.

By and large, tarantino’s writing and directing skills in this film are in a word — extraordinary (evident by its recent five Golden Globe nominations) and whether his goal was to simply entertain or to start a conversation about slavery and its effects, he can pat himself on the back and consider his mission accomplished.

DJANGo UNcHAINeD is rated R for strong graphic violence throughout, a vicious fight, language and some nudity. It opened in theaters across the U.s. on December 25, 2012.
