For advertising and general enquiries contact: Tracey Keogh – [email protected] or call 01264-310476 / 07775-927161The Test Valley Gazette is hand delivered to 7,000 homes throughout the Test Valley, from the South of Andover to Romsey – and is designed not to be just another “through-the-door-throw-away-publication” but rather a monthly source of information.

I also launched the Andover Gazette in September 2007 with a circulation of 10,000. This brings the number of Gazette magazines published to five, reaching half a million households each year.

Advertisers have the benefit of our free in-house design for their advertisements by a professional artwork and graphics team.

Clients or agencies supplying artwork or images should send JPGs or PDFs, 300 dpi minimum if actual size, or at a higher resolution if smaller than the size required.

MLG Publishing reserves the right to accept or reject any article or material supplied for publication or to edit such material prior to publication. The opinions expressed or advice given in this publication are the views of the individual authors and do not necessarily represent the views of the publisher. Every care is taken when compiling this magazine, however we cannot accept liability for any misprints or mistakes and no responsibility can be taken for loss, damage or omission of material due to error. It is the client’s responsibility to ensure they have permission to use any artwork which they supply to us or request us to reproduce. Unless prior consent of the publisher is given, no part of this publication is to be reproduced.

Welcome…to the March edition of the Test Valley Gazette. This is one of my favourite months, the start of Spring. Don’t forget Mothers’ Day on 18th March, and maybe the best date of the year – the 29th – start of British Summer Time… clocks forward for those longer days.

I would like to thank everyone for using the Gazette for local businesses and trades and becuase it is so well received we have expanded our area and will now be delivering to Abbotts Ann, Anna Valley and The Clatfords.

Our magazines are printed in a factory that is FSC® & ISO 14001 certified. Sustainable and environmentally friendly printing is part of our ethos. Using vegetable-based inks and recycling nearly 100% of our paper waste means you can be confident that this publication isn’t harming the planet.

Have a great March.

Thomas•Roskilly•Body

Following their adverts in January and February’s editions of the Andover Gazette, Thomas Roskilly Body invited me to try their body contouring and breast enhancement treatments.

MELT, which is body contouring, and Qilinn, which is breast enhancement, are not only new to Andover but to the UK. Innovator Dr Sister will launch these amazing machines at Professional Beauty, Excel in London this month. (They are already widely used in Scandinavia.)

To be honest I was a bit nervous and skeptical – how can this work? But believe me it did!! My first experience was MELT on my tummy. Wow! It was so relaxing, soothing and such a lovely warm feeling. I was impressed with the professional manner in which the treatment was given. Paula gave me all the information I needed as well as the opportunity to ask questions. There was no pain or soreness just relaxation. The machine has different ‘heads’ which are smoothed over your body while you lay back on the bed. Since

the treatment I have lost 4lbs and my tummy is more toned, so I am very happy.

The following week I tried Qilinn (breast enhancement) and, to be honest, I was more nervous with this one. I shouldn’t have been because everything is calm and Paula and Dorthe are such friendly people. Again Paula gave me all the information I needed and made me feel so comfortable. I laid on the bed wearing goggles (just like sunbed goggles) to protect my eyes from the light flashes while the treatment was given. It was relaxing and I could feel myself going to sleep. Since the treatment I can see a difference – I have more ‘fullness’; it’s brilliant!

I would never consider surgery but I would consider these treatments! They are safe and, in comparison to surgery, they are inexpensive. I must admit it took me to try it first but now I think I maybe hooked!

Thank you Thomas Roskilly Body.

ESTABLISHED IN 1978 by Alan Drummond, Drummond Heating is a family run plumbing and heating business based in Romsey, Hampshire.

Growing up on a Southampton estate as one of 11 children in a three bed house, life could have turned out very differently for Alan and his brothers.

Leaving school at just 14, Alan began work on Southampton Docks to support his parents.

After a short stint as a motor mechanic, Alan met his wife Diane and was given the opportunity to retrain as a heating engineer, before setting up Drummond Heating at age 24.

Brothers Robert and Tony Drummond joined the business in 1981, followed by their sister Rosemary in 1994.

A Real Family Aair

Children, Christopher (28) and Heidi (29), are now also part of the team and hope to continue their father’s success.

With over 100 years combined plumbing and heating experience, this is a family led rm that you and your family can depend on.

SINcommitment to evaluating its programmes has grown exponentially; between 2004 and 2010, more than 95 external evaluations were commissioned under the EPG framework (Figure I). These formed the basis of the Meta-Evaluation

Reports, produced annually by ACF-UK, representing some one of the most systematic appraisals of the organisations’ performance. Evaluations have also played

A key role in strengthening the evidence-base for new and innovative areas of ACF intervention, including

At some point in our lives many of us will suffer with back pain which can often be very debilitating. Whilst the cause may be sudden and acute, chronic long term back pain also presents a major problem, and many people live with low grade back pain for years and years. With this in mind, a local group of Bowen Therapists decided to get together to launch a back pain project. The South Hampshire Bowen Therapists are a group of local Bowen Therapists dedicated to raising public awareness of the Bowen Technique and to make Bowen more widely available to the public.

The Bowen Technique is a remedial, hands-on therapy that is applied using very gentle pressure. There is no manipulation or adjustment of hard tissue and no force is used. Because of this, Bowen can be considered for clients for whom other forms of therapy might be too aggressive, forceful or invasive such as the

elderly or young babies. The practitioner uses thumbs and fingers on precise points of the body to stimulate the muscles and soft tissue of the body. It is believed that the Bowen Technique prompts the body to reset, repair and balance itself and clients report the experience of pain relief, improvement of function and recovery of energy. Bowen is also an holistic therapy, treating the whole person rather than just treating the named disease or condition.

The South Hampshire Bowen Therapists Group are running the project throughout the spring, with the closing date for booking being 30th April 2012. Treatments are offered on a three for two basis with the third treatment being absolutely free, and all areas are covered along the south coast from Portsmouth to Southampton and Romsey. More information, and contact details for your local therapist can be found on the website www.backpainproject.wordpress.com.

The stronger your password, the better the security against intrusion by hackers and thieves, who could use your information to access your bank account or open new credit card accounts – and you wouldn’t know until it was too late.

A good, strong password should meet all three of these criteria:

1. At least eight characters in length.

2. Combines letters, numbers, and symbols, but avoid the obvious, such as “12345678,” “222222,” “abcdefg,” adjacent letters on your keyboard and common words even if modified with symbols eg “P@ssw0rd”.

3. Easy for you to remember, but difficult for others to guess i.e. not your login name, your spouse’s name, or your birthday.

One way to create a strong and memorable password is by using the initial letters from a ‘pass phrase’: start with a common phrase, such as “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks”, then inject at least one number or symbol into the password. In this case, “yctaodnt” can become “YctaODnT”, or even “U(t@0DnT”.

Improve your computer security with strong passwordsadvises Peter Clarke from PC PAL

Remember:

• Don’t give your passwords or pass phrase to friends or family members (especially children) who could innocently pass them on to other less trustworthy individuals.

• Don’t write passwords down and never provide your password over e-mail or telephone even if a trusted company or individual requests it.

• Change passwords regularly, ideally every few months. Do not use the same passwords for multiple accounts.

• Don’t enable the Save Password Option as this allows anyone who uses your computer to access your accounts. If you receive a dialog box asking if you would like the computer to remember the password, choose No.

If you have questions regarding this or any other computer issue then contact PC PAL on 01264-931000, email [email protected] or visit www.pcpal.co.uk

Andover has seen much change over the years, royalty, new business and worldwide inventions.

• Andover was a significant area in prehistoric times, as portrayed by many findings in the Iron Age Museum.

• In 994 AD, Vikings were confirmed in Andover by Bishop Alphece at the present site of St Mary’s Church.

• When Andover was registered in the Domesday book, Andover had 107 males inhabitants and a total population 500.

• During the great plague, Andover suffered extremely from these outbreaks, from 1603-1636, a plague lasting 13 years.

• In 1706, Twining’s began selling fine teas in England, and as many of you know, one of the many factories was based in Andover until 2010.

Fast forward to more recent times we have seen a new theatre, mutli screen cinema, redevelopment of the existing college and new supermarkets.

Andover keeps growing, has an amazing history and has the potential to become well known far and wide, so why isn’t it? And why is it that so many people appear have a low opinion of the town. I don’t know, but maybe if we all adopt a positive attitude, we can make this town amazing. If the history of this town has taught us anything, it’s that we have been through some rough times, but with vision it can great again.

We like to hear from you. What should we do to get empty retail premises full again, to get more businesses into the many vacant units on our trading estates. Come on Andover what do you think?

Sun on your face, wind in your hair, fresh air coursing through your lungs and a song in your heart. Where are you? Well, you could very well be on a cycling holiday touring through the classic Hampshire country side right on your doorstep.

The economic climate may have more of us considering a ‘staycation’ this year, and a cycle holiday offers you a fresh approach to an active holiday adventuring ‘in your own back garden’. The point of a cycling holiday is not necessarily to go a great distance; the point is to enjoy everything on the journey. For many of us who live in cities and towns, a close up view of rural England from between the handle bars of a bicycle is almost as exotic as a trip to Bali. Travelling through the country side on a bicycle allows you to connect with our beautiful scenery, and a chance to engage with village and agricultural life by meeting the people who live and work there. You can hardly turn a corner in the Hampshire countryside without stumbling over places of historical interest worth stopping and exploring. Fabulous gardens open to the public beckon us in to enjoy the blooms, small local museums and village churches house amazing treasures, charming tea shops tempt us with freshly baked cake and scones and rustic pubs feature hearty meals made from ingredients grown locally.

Combining comfort and style, Cycle Tours UK creates custom tours to suit all cycling abilities and levels of challenge – from ‘flat’ to ‘flat out’. Our Hampshire tours place you in the undulating landscape of the Test Valley, and the Isle of Wight, where on low traffic country lanes the seasonal beauty of rural Hampshire can be enjoyed at your own leisurely pace. We provide top quality hybrid touring bikes, helmets, soft saddles and all-weather jackets to ensure cycling comfort for weekends, three day mini-breaks, one week tours, and day rental of bicycles. We’ll set up self-guided tours for confident and adventurous cyclists, or we’ll organise a guided tour for cyclists who want to relax and leave the map reading to us.

A Contemporary RomanceHe was wearing a grey hoodie, and a dab of ‘ Eau de Skate’

He chose a wicked restaurant for our brilliant first date, He ordered two huge hamburgers, with relish and some fries,

And across that plastic table I gazed deep into his eyes When I saw his ‘HATE’ tattoo, I knew I’d found my perfect heaven,

And I got to know him well, from half past ten until eleven. We had to leave quite quickly as his lovely pit bull Clyde,

Was frightening all the customers; and snarling, just outside, He took me for a lovely walk just by the local tip

And there over the council bins, I dropped my bag of chips, We have a brand new baby now, a lovely little boy,

I’ve dressed him in a hoodie and I’m going to name him Troy I know his Dad still loves me but my best mate’s not convinced,

She’s told me I should ask him…but I haven’t seen him since.

People begin Pilates for a many reasons – referral by a chiropracter, doctor or physiotherapist; following an injury, accident or just to try something new. (Some come for Pippa Middleton’s bottom!)

All then enjoy the benefits of increased flexibility, mobility through the joints, a stronger core, toned muscles and improved posture.

Pilates Works is a purpose built studio with Academy Studios in Romsey. We have 5 Pilates Reformer machines… they might look a little bit like instruments of torture but they’re not as scary as they first appear!

The Reformer machine uses a system of springs, pulleys and a moveable carriage meaning that your body is safe and supported as you work out.

The Reformer can simplify Pilates for beginners as well as challenge you as you become stronger and more flexible.

It’s a very safe, effective and fun way to work

out. However, don’t take our word for it book yourself a FREE 30 MINUTE TRIAL SESSION. (See advert for ways to book.)

“I initially signed up for the reformer sessions in October 2011 as a means of rehabilitation exercise – I sustained a hip injury in a car accident 2 years previously and had found it difficult to maintain any form of intensive or strenuous exercise. Also, with a wedding planned for December 2011, I was running out of time to get in shape!!

With reformer, the exercises can be as gentle or as strenuous as you like! Using a lower resistance, I could have a good workout without putting any unnecessary stress through my hip.

The results in such a short space of time were amazing! My husband has sent his personal thanks to my instructor, Dawn, for giving his wife such shapely, well trimmed legs and thighs!! I have subsequently signed up for 10 more sessions!!”

Your Local Family Business with over 55 years experience

After their very popular concert in St Peters Church last summer, the Wherwell Singers return to Stockbridge on April 28th to perform yet another exciting concert with a repertoire including Handel’s Zadok the Priest, Fauré’s Cantique de Jean Racine, Bruckner motets and English part songs.

The Wherwell Singers is the brain child of Dale Webb, who comments,

“When I arrived in Wherwell six years ago I was keen to set up a community choir and so placed an advert in our village magazine. Despite the small size of the village, people stepped forward and, as news of us grew, singers from across the Test Valley asked to join too. Now we have 25 singers and have established a reputation for ourselves as well and built up a good repertoire. As well as some of the standard classical repertoire, we’ve sung some contemporary classical music - it can be a lot more tuneful than you think!”

In their sixth year, the Wherwell Singers have exceeded all their expectations, having delivered two sell out performances each year at Christmas and in the Summer, held in Wherwell’s Parish church of St Peter and the Holy Cross. It’s a busy start to 2012. On April 29th the choir will lead the music in a service of rededication at Wherwell Church, singing Parry’s famous I was Glad. On May 12th the choir will contribute to the Wherwell Pageant and, as part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations, will perform Sir John Tavener’s Hymn to the Sovereign. It is hoped that Sir John will be in attendance.

Wherwell Singers Celebrate SpringLast summer, unable to use their usual venue of St Peter and the Holy Cross, Wherwell due to lengthy roof and spire repairs, the Wherwell Singers gave a recital at St Peters, Stockbridge. They had such a warm welcome from a lively, huge and appreciative audience, that a return to Stockbridge seemed inevitable. The 2012 repertoire promises to be as much fun.

The Wherwell Singers are a non-profit making organisation and have raised monies for Wherwell Church restoration project and charities including Naomi House, Breast Cancer Care, Leukaemia Research, and Andover Young Carers.

Bartley have recently agreed to be the proud sponsor of Salisbury based drivers, Stuart Waite (in the 2012 Production BMW Championship) and Stephen Brown (in the 2012 BMW Compact Cup).

Both drivers have always had a keen interest in cars and racing since their teens and both have a history of successful go karting racing. Although 2012 will be the first season of professional racing for Stephen, it’s the 3rd season for Stuart who had several podium finishes last season and finished 4th overall.

Bartley opened in 1997 and has expanded greatly since then. They now benefit from a busy team of 6. The BMW qualified technicians have almost 60 years experience of working with BMWs and BMW Minis. Bartley now operate from 3 fully equipped workshops, featuring BMW diagnostic tools and the latest 4 wheel laser alignment equipment on the Rushington Business Park in Totton, Southampton.

This means that Bartley are in an ideal position to assist both Stuart and Stephen on a technical level as well as sponsorship.

Look BARTLEY INDEPENDENT BMW SPECIALISTS up on Facebook, as well as their website throughout the season for regular updates, photos, results and special offers!

Bartley offer a while you wait service. There is a café on site – why not have a cuppa and a bite to eat as they take care of your car.

If you need to be on the road, Bartley offer courtesy vehicles at no extra charge.

Bartley are situated in Totton. Just a 5 minute drive from junction 2 or 3 of the M27 and benefit by being on the A35.

Dear FriendsAt Cruise In we practice what we preach. We’re just back from a great Royal Caribbean International ‘back-to-back’ cruise in the Caribbean. We’ll give you the full low-down in our next Newsletter (to make sure you get to read it visit www.cruisein.co.uk and join our email list or mailing list) but here’s a quick taster. One thing was really new to us. Royal Caribbean International have introduced a Wow! Recognition card. This is a card, one per passenger, which can be given to any member of staff who has given exceptional service – delivered the Wow! factor in other words. The Wow! Recognition card overcomes doubts some people may have about pre-paying tips. Knowing you have a card to award, keeps all the staff keen and on their toes! Just like us! All of the staff here at Cruise In regularly cruise and we regularly publish their reports in our Newsletters. For the moment all we can tell you is we’re still in the middle of

unpacking but we had a brilliant time. First we were on on Royal Caribbean International’s Navigator of the Seas, a Voyager class ship, for six nights from Fort Lauderdale, calling at Grand Cayman, Falmouth (Jamaica) and Labadee, Haiti. We followed this with 5 nights on Royal Caribbean International’s Liberty of the Seas, a Freedom class ship from Fort Lauderdale calling at Belize and Cozumel, Mexico. The ships are brilliant. The itineraries were brilliant. Some of the ports of call were really eye-opening. Belize was just great. Neither of us had been there on previous cruises. We took a city tour which was a perfect way to learn about this wonderful country. Can’t wait to tell you more about it in the next Newsletter - don’t forget, visit www.cruisein.co.uk and join our email list or mailing list. Got to dash - to put another load of laundry in the washing machine! Kim and Vick

You had to be on it to know it. Three days before sailing, the Rhine authorities threw all river traffic into chaos. This came as no surprise to them. Vessels over a certain size were banned from sailing upstream from Duisburg. Any other vessels could only manoeuvre in certain areas with many docking points unreachable. Unheard of. No water. No rain forecast for 10 days. The lowest water levels at Christmas time since records began. We were one of the only vessels to sail somewhere! Well, take a look at the photos. Happy people. New Christmas Markets. A cruise to remember for more reasons than one. But we made it. Duisburg. Krefeld. Dusseldorf. Cologne for 2 days. Coaches to Koblenz, Bonn and the Grandhotel Petersberg, Konigswinter. And the best bit of news that nobody onboard knew.....had we gone upstream to Wiesbaden and Rudesheim we wouldn’t have got back...river closed for bomb disposal! We all had a brilliant time under the circumstances with a great Cruise In Party, lots of splendid food but above all....the good old British family spirit that wins through every time! Thanks to all of you for coming and your lovely company. This year, fingers crossed that it can’t happen twice in 100 years, we’ll all be up river where we should have been!

THE EVEN MORE SPLENDID SPLENDOUR OF THE SEAS

Royal Caribbean International's Splendour of the Seas had a complete refurbishment, a 'five-week revitalization', as it was called, in October 2011. The ship was upgraded inside and out at a cost of $50 million. 124 balcony cabins were added and all existing cabins were upgraded and their technology enhanced. There are new stateroom amenities including flat-screen TVs and remodelled bathrooms. Ship-wide Wi-Fi access has been installed and all cabins have iPads so guests can access daily schedules, onboard accounts and make restaurant reservations. There are many new dining options. New venues include Chops Grille, the signature steakhouse, the Asian Izumi restaurant, The Boardwalk Dog House hot-dog counter (capable of serving up to 1,000 hot-dogs a day), The Park Café deli-style restaurant, and a new à la carte menu in the Viking Crown Lounge. The pool deck has a new outdoor cinema. The indoor theatre has new stage technologies and 'spectacular shows' are performed in three languages. A new feature is the 'vertical entertainment' concept in the Centrum. Here aerialists perform jaw-dropping spectacles and up to 1,400 passengers can see the show. There are also two full-length, multi-deck LED displays. The Champagne Bar has been transformed into the fabulous new R Bar, a sophisticated 1960s vibe with signature cocktails. Other new spaces include the Royal Babies and Tots Nursery,

the Diamond Lounge for Crown and Anchor loyalty guests, and a Concierge Lounge for suite guests. Royal Caribbean has also introduced many modern features and new technologies to increase efficiency and minimise environmental impact. These include advanced water treatment, new bridge electronics, and to make the vessel run more fuel-efficiently, new external paint. All these new features increased the ship's weight so a 217-ton 'duck-tail' was added to the stern to increase stability. During 2012 Splendour of the Seas will homeport in Venice. ...LED displays for info...

‘WE DIDN’T EVEN KNOW YOU WERE HERE!’

That’s a phrase we’ve heard on a number of occasions since Cruise In have been appearing in the Andover Gazette. It’s probably because for eleven years we’ve been tucked away in the Business Centre on River Way. However, as a result of the Andover Gazette, it has been lovely to have met many local people over the past few months. We’re even more delighted to have been able to book some of you on - often a first - luxury cruise holiday. We’re not your typical walk-in, high street travel agency. We’re a true cruise consultancy, but our door is always open and we’ll always put the kettle on while we discuss your cruising options. Not only do we all cruise – lucky us – but we sell all Cruise Lines rated 4-Star and above. So if you don’t see your favourite line featured on our website or in our brochures and newsletters, it doesn’t mean we don’t sell it. We do! And probably at a better price than anyone else!

If your child is aged between 6 and 16 and needs some help with core subjects like Maths and English, or simply needs some direct assistance with exams like SATS/Common Entrance/11+ /GCSE in those core areas, then help is now at hand via a new tuition centre opening in Andover. The centre is based at the Westmarch Business Centre, directly opposite the 24 hour Tesco Extra store, on the A343 Newbury Road.

The centre will be jointly run by two fully qualified teachers, Bas and Emma Brown, who have over 35 years teaching experience behind them in both the primary and secondary age groups. Bas has, for the last few years, been a headmaster of two schools, so brings a wealth of educational and business experience to this new venture. Bas and Emma have three children of their own, one at University, and two of primary school age; as parents and teachers, they are very aware of how important confidence and success at school is for our youngsters, who will be entering an increasingly competitive world over the next few years.

Kip McGrath is an Australian company who have been enjoying success with their unique tuition centres, bespoke individualised education programmes, and resources, for over twenty five years in more than twenty countries worldwide. There are currently over 200 Kip McGrath centres in the UK, with a record number of parents deciding to give their children that little bit of extra help. One child described it as;

“A cool way to add to school.”

All sessions will be based at the centre, away from the distractions of home or school. Children would be assessed by Bas or Emma for free and then, if help is needed, an individually tailored programme suitable to the child’s needs will be put together. The children attend for weekly sessions after school on an evening to suit families. The sessions are eighty minutes long, very pacey, and are divided into six learning sessions. These involve Kip McGrath resources and individualised help from a tutor, who would always be a fully qualified teacher. Each session can involve specific help for an upcoming exam, if appropriate. The groups are small, comprising of only four or five children, homework would be set and marked each week, and parents get regular feedback from the tutors.

The service is very affordable which is vitally important in the current economic climate. Sessions are priced at £28, which is the equivalent of £21 an hour, and slightly cheaper than traditional one to one tutoring. Discounts will be available for families booking a term

in advance and for any parents who successfully recommend the centre to another local family.

Often children can be distracted at school, so the Kip McGrath centre is deliberately set up to be a warm, friendly place, where children can succeed. They may well learn new areas of the curriculum, but often it is an opportunity to reinforce what they already know and apply it in a common sense way, in an appropriate educational environment. Many of the resources used involve interactive software which helps reinforce previous knowledge and offer a fun way to learn. Kip McGrath, as a company, have always been one of the leaders in the field of professional tutoring and the use of appropriate software. The Andover centre will benefit from the company’s rollout of its new INSIGHT programme in 2012, where much wider internet based resources will be used both for tutoring sessions and at home. Each session involves educational games related to the topic the child is studying; there is little point giving up extra time to learn unless the children have some fun!

Thousands of children have really benefited from this programme of unique private tuition over many years, both in terms of increased success in class, and also improvements in self confidence inside and outside school. That, in itself, is worth so much nowadays, and the long history of success should give parents the confidence to come along and try this new service for your children.

The Westmarch Business Centre is adjacent to several large superstores, so it is possible to do the weekly shop whilst your child, or children, learn. Call and speak to Bas or Emma Brown, who will be delighted to meet you and your child, and discuss how best Kip McGrath can help.

If you would like a Free Assessment for your child please call the centre, and speak to Bas or Emma. 01264 748 913.

1. To lose belly fat you do NOT need to do more crunches and ab work!

These exercises don’t burn fat, they just work the muscles underneath it! To show your lovely, toned muscles you need to use full body intense resistance-based exercises (such as squats, lunges, deadlifts, press ups). This burns fat during the workout and afterwards too, leading to far more fat (and calories) burned overall than a few crunches.

2. A toned tummy is made in the kitchen!

You really have to get the nutrition right or all your hard work is for nothing. You can cancel out a workout in a few seconds, so what you eat really counts.

3. Spot reduction IS possible, but not from doing particular exercises…

You can influence stubborn body fat areas, but not by exercising those areas in isolation. Big ‘bang for your buck’ full body exercises are the key. However, if you have stubborn fat in your hips and thighs it is linked to excess oestrogen, the stuff that leeches from plastics and comes from eating processed and non-organic foods. The best way to help detoxify these harmful oestrogens? Eat lots of broccoli and other cruciferous greens! They contain indole-3-carbinole that is a key nutrient for assisting with detoxification. A good enough reason to eat your greens? I think so.

Stomach fat is linked to excess cortisol, the stress hormone. Vitamin C can help, reducing stress-inducing toxins such as caffeine and adding in stress management techniques – exercise (but not excessive cardio), yoga, meditation etc.

4. Don’t believe the myth: ‘I’m too old to get my body back’…

We can do anything we set our minds to! The issue is what do you want to achieve, how much

Five Fantastic Fat Loss Tips You Probably Didn’t Already Know!by Caroline Radway of Fit Body Fix Bootcamp

do you want it, what are you prepared to do to get there? If you want it enough it doesn’t feel like you are sacrificing things, as you are laser focussed towards your goal. If you don’t want it enough, then admit that! Set yourself goals you know you can achieve, create a series of ‘wins’, feeding You may well find you exceed your goals several times over!

5. Just because it says it’s healthy, it doesn’t mean it’s good for you.

Anything with a label is less healthy than the foods without labels – packaging is a way to advertise a product, and health sells… Shop the outer edge of the supermarket, load up on vegetables (try a new one each week!), fruits, nuts, seeds, meat, chicken, fish etc. Learn to read ingredients lists not calorie or fat content. Real food is the key – avoiding processed junk (even stuff pretending to be good for you). Fats are important, especially the omega 3s – there is nothing to fear from having a decent amount of fat in your diet. Eat for nutrients not energy and notice your energy soar!

On a fairly grey day, we took an energetic walk along part of the Test Way between Mottisfont and Stockbridge. The five-mile walk took us along what used to be part of the Sprat and Winkle railway line, and across some beautiful green fields, through marshland, and alongside the River Test.

The first half of our walk wasn’t quite what I’d imagined, as the footpath took us alongside the somewhat noisy A3058 road and the river was seldom visible from the footpath. But the second half of the walk, from the area near Kings Somborne all the way to Stockbridge, was much closer to the image I’d had in my mind of the beautiful landscape with rolling hills, peaceful wooded tracks, and the calm and crystal clear chalk stream river with swans and coots swimming amongst the reeds.

This section of the 44-mile Test Way follows what was originally a canal between Andover and Redbridge near Southampton and was then converted into a railway line. The Sprat and Winkle line, which opened in 1865, got a lot of passenger traffic from fishermen heading to the famous trout fishing spots along the River Test, as well as race-goers (and race horses) travelling to Stockbridge. It was also used to carry troops from Salisbury Plain to Southampton as they headed to France in the First and Second World Wars.

Showing signs of its history, there are abandoned railway sleepers and old railway bridges along the footpath, but the most interesting find was Horsebridge Station, which was closed in 1965 as part of Dr. Beeching’s Axe, the mass closure of 50% of stations to save money. The station was bought in 1985 by Val and Tony Charrington, who have since restored it to its Victorian glory and now open the station for afternoon teas and weddings.

Further along you come to the Marsh Court Estate, featuring a grand Tudor-style house designed by Edwin Lutyens in 47 acres of land. You can see the house when you reach theStockbridge Common Marsh. We ventured

off the Test Way onto the Common, which was my favourite part, with access to the river’s edge and wide open marshland. You come out along the footpath besides the Lillies of Stockbridge tearoom on the high street.

The full Test Way route takes you from the chalk downs at Inkpen to Eling on Southampton Water. We’ll be venturing out to other sections of the walk way soon.

We all live in a rural area, but how many of us really know what goes into managing the fields around us and what farmers actually do on a day-to-day basis? I know I don’t, and having lived most of my adult life in cities, I am very curious to learn more about farming. So I took a trip to Saxley Farm, Red Rice, near Andover to talk to local farmer Matthew Read of the John Read Partnership, who manages five farms covering 3,110 acres of land between Andover and Salisbury, and we will be featuring a monthly interview with him on Inspired Community about life down on the farm.

By general standards, the Hampshire and Wiltshire-based farming operation Matthew runs is a big one. He grows three main crops: wheat, barley and oilseed rape. The wheat is used mostly in the West Country as animal feed and some is exported from Southampton, but it is also used for milling wheat by the likes of Premier Foods’ Rank Hovis in Andover. The barley is sent to Norfolk and converted into malt for beer and some whisky. And the oilseed rape is crushed for its oil and used for a range of things from industrial to cooking oil.

They used to grow linseed (with the pretty blue flowers) but have found that oilseed rape is easier to manage and grow, and provides a better return.

Each crop is grown on rotation, so in the first year a field will have oilseed rape, the second year they plant wheat, and in the third year it is rotated to barley, to ensure the soil doesn’t get too depleted of nutrients. The oilseed rape is their so-called ‘break crop’ as a non-straw part of the crop rotation, but they’ve also used beans and peas in past, as well as the linseed.

The Team on the Farm

Matthew spends his days overseeing the management and organisation of the farm, and has two full-time workers “who do everything including establishing the crop, cultivating,

Saxley Farm: How Local Farmer Matthew Read Manages His 3,100 Acres of Landby Angela Wilbraham

drilling, fertiliser spreading, and crop spraying. They are currently working from 7.30am until it gets dark, which is about 4pm right now. But they put in long hours when it gets busy.

“My job is to run the business of the farm and to make sure the farmers have all the kit they need to do their job. When we get really busy we bring in part time workers and I’ll get on a tractor myself,” says Matthew. Maintaining the farm is a costly business. There’s a current project to concrete an area where lorries turn, which is going to cost about £15,000. A new drill, costing £55,000, is about to arrive although it “should generate enormous savings of money and time as it’s a direct drill that will save us pre-cultivating the land”. And a new tractor has been ordered, to the tune of £90,000. All in all, the farm has four tractors, two combine harvesters and a selection of other equipment like sprayers and spreaders.

Managing the Uncertainty in Farming

The farm is profitable, but Matthew says it is “up and down, depending on the world price of wheat. We’ve seen it go from about £70/tonne up to £200/tonne. Right now the price, at around £140-150, is good. But there is a lot of uncertainty and costs have risen dramatically in the last few years. Australia has just had a record harvest and the weather is changeable. Last year was very dry and while we had a good harvest, not everyone did. “We can usually gauge this ahead of time and we sell our crops in advance. We are selling our 2012 & 2013 crop now.”

Usually they sell to merchants who trade futures on their crop on their behalf, but they have been considering managing their own futures account, dependent on finding the right broker.

They receive a Single Farm Payment subsidy as part of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) through Defra. “This is an important part of our income,” says Matthew. “Could we survive

Page 45: Test Valley Gazette

Issue 193 – March 2012

without it? Probably. We could change things that we do, but it wouldn’t be easy. And that’s why we jump through hoops to qualify.

Changing Practices for the Environment and CAP

“With the CAP being renegotiated now, there is a lot of uncertainty here too,” he says. “We are anticipating changes such as ‘greening the CAP’ and a financial cap on payments.” To that end, the farm has changed a number of its practices, such as reducing the number of passes across the land with machinery like ploughs to reduce its environmental impact. But Matthew disagrees with using the CAP to manipulate the market and control food production by bringing back theset aside policy, which is currently being discussed.

Matthew works with some manufacturers on (heavily regulated) trials at his farm of new crop varieties and fungicides. This provides the manufacturers with valuable data on the new products, but also helps them with marketing, and they often hold open days for other farmers to come along and see how the trials are going.

The Lay of the Land

The five farms, spread across 15 miles, that make up the John Read Partnership business include the original family-owned farm of Queen Manor at Boscombe Down, where his mum still lives. The farms at Newton Toney and Over Wallop which are run by Matthew on a contract basis, where his company is hired to do the management and farming work in coordination with the land owners. He is also the tenant farmer of both Parsonage Farm at Durrington and Saxley Farm in Red Rice, where his base is, including his family home with wife Jen, two children, the main office and grain store. Oh, and their very happy dog Dotty.

He is lucky enough to have a tenancy agreement for three generations of his family. “Having this kind of tenancy, which is not really available any more, gives us a very good level of security,” says Matthew. “We pay rent and that rent is reviewed every three years based on how well the farming business is going.” After

Matthew Read in his Oilseed Rape Farm in Red Rice, Hampshire

his father, Matthew is the second generational tenant here, but he’s yet to see if either of his two young children wants to follow in his footsteps.

With several generations of his family having farmed in the area, farming is in Matthew’s blood. At aged 17 he left school and took a trip to Australia, where he worked as a farmer. He then returned to the UK to go to the Royal Agricultural College. After graduating in 1989, he took over the running of Eastover Farm, Abbotts Ann, before then taking over the family business from his father.

Chairing the Crop Sector at Red Tractor

In his spare time, Matthew is a director of the Assured Food Standards organisation, which is a British organisation that promotes and regulates food quality, and licenses the Red Tractor quality mark. Matthew is a chairman of the Crops and Sugar Beet Scheme within the Red Tractor Assurance for Farms. “It’s a fascinating role as the red tractor scheme covers about £11 billion worth of food. And our crops and sugar beet group deals with a wide range of crops which we all consume on a daily basis.” With the 14 people on his board, they write the technical standards that farmers must follow in order to qualify. They have a marketing team who then identify producers, such as breakfast cereal manufacturers, or maltsters, or millers, who source farm assured products and who might want to license the red tractor logo for use on their products to show they comply.

I’ll be revisiting Matthew in February to kick-off a monthly series of blogs to explore just what our local farmers have to do each month so keep a look out for more soon.

Lawntech use high quality professional products and state-of-the-art machinery to refine your lawn

Now is the time to roll up your sleeves. get the mower out of the shed and get on with the early spring tasks that will ensure that your lawn gets the perfect start for the season ahead.

Local independent professional lawncare specialists Lawntech™ are on hand to give the following lawncare advice.

To start off with in the spring we recommend that any leaves and falling debris left over from the winter are raked up before giving the lawn the first spring mowing. Ensure that your mower has a sharp blade so that it does not bruise the grass tips.

To ensure your lawn gets off to a good start for the season, moss and weeds may require treatment, followed by a light scarification to remove any dead moss and thatch which will eventually suffocate your lawn and prevent healthy grass growth during the forthcoming season.

Aeration is the key to a healthy lawn, so now is the time to carry out spiking or hollow tining which will relieve compaction and ensure that air and nutrients can get

to the root system. Professional scarifiers and aeration machines do the best job but raking out the moss with a wire rake and aerating with a garden fork is the next best thing and will certainly help.

A good, balanced slow release spring fertiliser will then help to promote good growth throughout the spring months, with a second application again advisable during May/June.

Don’t forget that regular mowing, sometimes more than once per week during the growing season, is another essential ingredient in achieving that ‘Perfect English Lawn’.

If you require professional help with your lawncare or have a specific lawn problem Lawntech are on hand to help and will be happy to give free analysis and a written report, with recommendations and a quotation for a lawncare programme or lawn renovation.

Under proposals outlined in a consultation paper, the Government is proposing to make squatting in residential properties a criminal offence. The offence would be committed where a person:

• Was in the building as a trespasser having entered as such;

• Knew or ought to have known that he or she was a trespasser; and

• Was living or intending to live in the building.

Currently home owners only have partial protection, or so says Shaun Underhill a Partner in Winchester based solicitors Shentons: “The Criminal Law Act 1977 already makes it a criminal offence for a trespasser to fail to leave residential premises when required to do so by or on behalf of a ‘displaced residential occupier’ or a ‘protected intending occupier’. While this allows those who are effectively made homeless by squatters to take action, it does not protect landlords or owners of second homes.”

At present, the Government is not planning to criminalise squatting in commercial premises. Part of the reason for this is to prevent the occupation

Homeowner Protection Against Squatters To Be Extendedof buildings during protest activities from being caught by the new legislation. The Government claims that stopping short of criminalising squatting in non-residential buildings represents a balanced compromise. Neither will students who occupy academic buildings or workers who stage sit-ins to protest against an employer be caught by the offence. Shaun Underhill comments: “Squatters who occupy genuinely abandoned or dilapidated non-residential buildings will not be committing the new offence, although their actions will rightly continue to be treated as a civil wrong and they can still be prosecuted for offences such as criminal damage or burglary.”

The legislation will not apply in situations where the property has previously been occupied legitimately, such as where tenants fall behind with their rent payments.

If you feel you may need advice Shentons Solicitors and Mediators can advise you on the latest law in this field. Call Shaun Underhill on 01962 844544 for further information.
