that there is plenty of space for songs, but it holds only

Could you please send me a new phone with free

landof land.
1 The proposal
The local council is proposing that the piece of land
next to Harnley High School should either be made
into a park with playground sports facilities or a
cinema complex.
2 Two reasons not to build a cinema complex
It’s not a good idea to make this land into a cinema
complex because, fi rstly, there is already a large
cinema complex two miles away from our town
which is very easy to get to by bus. Secondly,
the cinema will only be used by people who are
interested in seeing fi lms and have the money to
watch them.
3 The advantages of a park
If the council builds a park with a playground and
sports facilities, children will have somewhere
to play and everybody will be able to practise
different sports. Also there will be somewhere for
people to take their dogs for walks or for families to
have a picnic.
4 Recommendations and suggestions
Therefore I strongly support the idea of building a
park and facilities which can be used by everyone
in the neighbourhood. I recommend we all sign
a petition to show our support for this idea and
suggest we go to any council meetings about it. In
this way we will be sure the council understands
which proposal we prefer.

5 Not all information on the Internet is

( _ / 5 marks)
ReaddingReadingReading1 Read the article.
Is the Internet good for children?
There are a lot of opinions about the Internet for children.
Some people say it is bad and others that it is not. I think
the Internet has both advantages and disadvantages.
Firstly, it is true that there is a lot of information on the
Internet which is very useful for young people when they
have to fi nd out something for homework. However,
anybody can upload information onto the Internet so we
cannot be sure that everything we read on it is true.
Secondly, the Internet allows children to send messages to
each other so they can discuss their homework or just chat.
Although sending messages can be very useful for young
people, it can worry parents because they do not want bad
people to be able to contact their children. You have to be
very careful about who you chat to on the Internet.
Thirdly, you can fi nd a lot of interesting downloads on the
Internet and young people often download music, videos
and photos. They can have fun sending these to their
friends too, but parents have to take care that children
only download suitable material because there is a lot
of information on the Internet which it is not right for
children to see.
In conclusion, I believe that young people fi nd the Internet
very useful and they cannot imagine being without it.
The only problem is that parents need to watch what they
are doing on the Internet because some things may be
dangerous or unsuitable.

1 Read the review of a fi lm Year 9 students saw last week.
Mamma Mia
By Daisy Yorke
Last week Year 9 went to our local cinema to see
the fi lm Mamma Mia! This fi lm is based on the
musical of the same name. Mamma Mia! is set on
the island of Skiathos, which is a very beautiful
island in Greece. The story involves a mother, her
three old boyfriends and her daughter who is
getting married. It’s a romantic musical, but it also
has some comedy too.
Most students in Year 9 agree that it was a very
good fi lm. The acting by stars like Meryl Streep and
Pierce Brosnan was great and although neither of
them are famous for singing, they did it very well.
New stars like Amanda Seyfried were also very
good. Of course the fantastic songs from Abba were
very important in making the fi lm such a success.
A lot of students also said they loved the dancing
and nearly everyone agreed that the special effects
were excellent. A few students thought the story
was a bit disappointing, but most of us didn’t think
it was such an important part of the fi lm.
If you want to see a fi lm with lots of humour, which
is set in a lovely place and which you can be sure
will have a happy ending, Year 9 would defi nitely
recommend this fi lm. If you’ve missed the fi lm at the
cinema, why not buy or rent the DVD with a friend
to watch at home? You won’t regret it!

( _ / 5 marks)
Is TV good for young people?
People have different opinions about whether it is good
for young people to watch television. I believe that TV
can have both advantages and disadvantages for young
people.
Firstly, one advantage that TV has is that young people
can learn a lot of information from it. Programmes like
the news and documentaries provide them with a lot
of information about what is happening in the world,
about history, technology, nature and many other
things. However, children spend time watching when
they could be doing something more interesting like
reading a book or talking to members of their family or
going out with friends.
Secondly, TV gives young people a way to relax and
entertain themselves. There are many light programmes
on TV like quiz shows, comedies and sport such as
football which many young people enjoy watching
after a hard day studying. Although doing this can be
enjoyable, it is usually better for young people to use
their time in a better way. For example, taking some
exercise also helps people relax, and it is much healthier.
Thirdly, some people believe that watching TV gives
young people something to talk about, especially if
they watch programmes made for their age group.
However, isn’t it more fun if young people make their
own entertainment? For example, getting together and
going to the cinema or a cafe or just for a walk will allow
young people to be active while enjoying themselves.
In conclusion, although I believe that young people
enjoy watching TV and that it can be informative, I don’t
think it is good for them. It is better for young people
not to watch a lot of TV so that they can take exercise or
spend time with their family or friends.

A Tricky Three Solve the Brighton Mystery, by Bernie
Lydon
This is an exciting mystery set in an English seaside town.
The Tricky Three – Jack, Louis and Millie with their dog
Bonkers – are staying at their aunt’s for the summer
and having a great time, when something goes wrong.
Suddenly, pet cats are disappearing from everywhere. Of
course the Tricky Three just have to fi nd out what is going
on. We follow them through many adventures until they
solve the mystery and like all of Bernie Lydon’s books, the
story is great. I recommend this book to anyone who likes
a good mystery.
B The Yogs from Outerspace, by S. Stevens
If you like science fi ction, you will love this book. Set in
the year 3056 on Planet G, a planet millions of years
from Earth, this is an unusual science fi ction book which
has both romance and action. The story is about Yona, a
woman from Yog who meets and falls in love with Tom, a
man from Earth, when the two planets are fi ghting each
other. They have many diffi culties to face, but if you read
this book you will fi nd out how great love can win against
any problem. Stevens also writes super fi ght scenes which
keep the book exciting to the very last page.
C A Modern Fairytale, by J.K. Rawlings
This isn’t a normal story of fairies, giants and witches. It’s
a story that takes place nowadays, set in New York City.
Posy, a thirteen-year-old schoolgirl, discovers that her
mother is a witch and that it is now her turn to become
one too! There are some very crazy stories as Posy learns
how to use her powers. A great comedy which will have
you laughing and giggling all the way through. Defi nitely
the book to read if you want to forget your problems.
