Starting in 1812, a series of volcanicexplosions around the world had released hugeamounts of dust into the atmosphere. Tragedy is a type of drama that was unique toancient Greece. In his Poetics, the philosopherAristotle relates that the first tragedians wereperformerswho improvised songs at rural festivals.Thewordtragedy,literally“goat-songs,”mayrefertothe animals sacrificed at such feasts. How theseeventually developed into the dramatic art formfamiliartousastragedyisnotentirelyclear. However, the decisive factor seems to have been theestablishment,sometimeinthe6thcenturyBC,ofacompetition inAthens as part of the annual festivalknownastheCityDionysia.
TheCityDionysiawasheldintheearlyspring, andincluded street processions, music performances, and feasts.By theearly 5thcenturyBC, thedramacompetition had become the centerpiece of thefestival. Plays composed by three tragedians wereperformed on separate days, with a fourth daydevoted to comedy. The winner of the competitionwaschosenby ten judgesandawardedacrownofivy.
