2019 SCHOOL CAPTAINS.

It gives me great pleasure to announce the 2019

School Captains for Reservoir High School. They

are Brian James, Ananke Arneaud, Weam Tahar and

Amber Robertson. (Above photo left to right)

The selection process for this important role in the

school required the applicants to firstly produce a

written submission and then complete an interview.

The interview panel consisted of Staff and students

of the school. They were asked some very hard

questions by the students and all of the applicants

presented with poise, confidence and high levels of

communication skills.

“We have every confidence that our four Captains will be

outstanding leaders in the school.”

Their ideas were excellent, (as Principal of a school

it is great to hear the ideas and thoughts of the

students as they see it) and it was a very tough

choice for the panel of staff and students to make.

We have every confidence that our four Captains will

be outstanding leaders in the school and exceptional

role models to both students in our school, but also

everyone in our school community.

STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL (SRC) LEADERS 2019

The SRC at Reservoir is unique in that every student

in the school can be part of the SRC and attend

meetings. This is so that every voice in the school can

be heard. If students wish to raise a concern or have

a great idea, they are welcome to come to SRC and

raise it, or they can contact one of the SRC Leaders or

Captains who will raise it on their behalf.

This past week has seen the application and

interview process for the selection of the SRC

Leaders and Captains for 2019. I am also pleased

to announce that we have selected three Captains

of the SRC and 5 Leaders as part of the Leadership

Team. The students are-

RESERVOIR’S GOT TALENT

This week also saw the brilliant end of year Music

concert. Outstanding. The breadth of instruments

and voices, the exceptional confidence of our young

people and the amazing talent and skills entertained

the large crowd. We recommend the Performing

and Visual Arts, including Music to students for so

many reasons. Firstly, it supports the academic

development of a young person. Secondly, it creates

a point of connection with the school, teachers

and other students. It is a reason to come to school

outside of the regular learning. Finally, it is the

enjoyment factor: both the enjoyment in making

music or art, and the enjoyment of others of hearing

it. This week’s concert was enjoyable and it was great

to see the joy on the face of both the performers, and

the parents and families in the audience. Earlier this

term we held the Dance and Drama showcase. The

showcase highlighted a wide range of performances

of students from Year 7 to Year 12. Well done to the

Music and Performing Arts Team, the parents of the

participants and the students for these outstanding

events.

Instrumental Music 2019There is still time to enrol in Instrumental Music for

2019. Reservoir High School offers tuition in violin,

guitar, vocals, keyboards and yes, drums. If new or

existing students are interested, please contact either

Julie Dellal at the school or the General Office.

DOCTORS IN SCHOOLS PROGRAM

Thanks to Nina Rossini and Elaine Guerra for

escorting two of our Year 10 students, Jeralyn and

Kirsten to the 2018 Annual Youth Health Conference.

Jeralyn and Kirsten spoke to the conference of

doctors, politicians and health workers on the

success of the Reservoir High School Doctors in

School’s Program. This Victorian Department of

Education initiative is a brilliant program and starting

to spread nationally. Well done to Kirsten and Jeralyn

for not only representing the school so well, but also

the state of Victoria.

DEADLY DAY OF SCIENCE

Earlier this week a group of students from Reservoir

High School attended the Deadly Day of Science at

Latrobe University. The students reported a great day

of hands on Science activities and learning, listening

to Indigenous students speak about their pathways

and learning about university life and careers.

HEADSTART PROGRAM

Headstart is a new initiative from the State

Government to increase the number of students

undertaking SBATs while at school. There are three

components to the Headstart program-

-Flexible delivery of VCAL and VCE to assist in

maximising time on the job, and with a strong focus

on literacy and numeracy attainment;

-Quality training delivered in a way that matches time

on the job to support achievement of competencies;

and

-Maximised time in employment, with time on

the job increasing each year in order to support

genuine progression through the apprenticeship or

traineeship.

Reservoir High is one of the ten foundation schools in

the North East Melbourne cluster. The program has

potential to really support students on their pathway

and ensure that students complete their secondary

school education and are work ready for their futures.

VCAL MURAL

The VCAL class of 2018 have worked hard to

construct a mural on the outside of the Senior School

building. I was really impressed with the design and

construction process and the high level of teamwork

and communication skills (both vital 21st Century

skills) used to complete the project. The mural

The 6 week debating program run by the Debaters

Association of Victoria (DAV) was a great experience

It is extremely important that all students ensure

they have completed all required work and are up

to date and staff are currently completing Semester

two reports. We recommend parents /guardians

talk to your children or your children’s teachers to

ensure work is up to date. Term 4 Interim reports

are available to be accessed and this will be a great

indication of your child’s progress.

HALLOWEEN HITS THE JUNIOR SCHOOL

Thanks to all students who played along with the

Halloween theme and came ‘trick or treating’ in the

Junior School. It was terrific to see so many students

dressing up for the occasion. All students enjoyed

the large number of treats on offer throughout the

day!!

YEAR 7 & 8 PIT GYMNASTICS

All Year 7 & 8 students have been participating in a

two week Gymnastics unit at PIT Gym in Mill Park

in recent weeks as part of the Physical Education

Curriculum. The experienced instructors have

been putting the students to the test with activities

ranging from uneven bars, rings, mini trampoline,

large trampolines, beams, floor exercises and so on.

One of the more entertaining activities for students

was jumping into the large foam pits and trying to dig

their way out.

The students in general loved the gymnastics unit

and thrived on putting their skills to the test and

trying to out ‘bounce’ their class mates. Great fun

had by all!!

SEMESTER 2 MUSIC SHOWCASE NIGHT

Congratulations to all Year 7 & 8 students who

shone at our recent Music Showcase night. All

students have been working very hard throughout

the semester and it was a proud night watching all

of them performing in front of family, peers and staff.

They were all amazing!!

Reservoir High Newsletter | Term 4, Issue 6DEBATING Page 8

The 6 week debating program run by the Debaters

Association of Victoria (DAV) was a great experience

in which we learned about ourselves, team work,

effort and determination, and of course, debating

itself.

During the program, we learnt how to work with

others, not just our friends, but others who we have

never worked with before. We had to learn to trust

our team members and incorporate their opinions so

that we were effective. As the saying goes: If you want

to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.

Thus, teamwork played a huge part in our successes

of winning the debate.

A team had to cooperate, get along and be fair in

order for them to successfully prepare an effective

side. This involved compromise, helping each other

when needed, and maintaining focus. Not working

with our friends played a huge part, as sometimes,

if you work with your friends you will most likely get

distracted and won’t meet the deadlines. That is why

if you work with different people who have different

abilities and skills, you have a fair chance of winning.

It’s quite interesting to say that during debating

we learned about ourselves. We learned what our

abilities are, what our strengths and weaknesses are,

and many other things that could be as long as a

dictionary. By working together, we were able to get

constructive feedback from our team members, and

this helped as see things about ourselves and skills

that we may not have been aware of before.

Debating encouraged us to speak in front of people

we had never seen, it gave us confidence, and it

showed us our strengths. We had to experience trial

and error. What I mean by this is that we had to try

different speaker positions and strategies, and this

helped us uncover our strengths and weaknesses.

Debating taught us to speak in front of others,

become more confident, try new things and embrace

our strengths while also working on improving our

strengths.

“As the saying goes: If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go

far, go together”.

We also, obviously, learned about debating.

We learned about how debating works, how it’s

structured, how speeches are constructed, and

many other things. For example, in debating there

are the 3 Ms: Matter, Method and Manner. For most,

these were new terms which we learned about in

class and during the DAV workshops, which were

held afterschool at Parade College. Manner is how

you present: your voice projection, pace and pauses,

body language, how you emphasise words and use

your tone. Matter is what you are talking about: the

range and quality of your arguments, how clear and

detailed your arguments and explanation is, how

relevant your evidence is to support your arguments.

Lastly, Method is the structure of your actual

speech: how you signposted, the logical structure

of the different parts, using TEEL in your arguments,

how you rebutted the other team, using the right

language and ensuring your speech is persuasive.

Debating took lots of effort and time, including class

time, lunchtimes, and after school. It was an intense

few weeks, but greatly rewarding.

YEAR 10 FORMAL

The annual Year 10 Formal continues to confound

audience expectations. Now in its 26th year, the

event’s organisers drew inspiration from the revival

in interest in legendary rock band Queen sparked by

the smash hit film Bohemian Rhapsody.

The gang was all there: shaggy-maned lead guitarist

Brian May (Mr Vass), uber-cool bass player John

Deacon (Ms Best), sneering drummer Roger Taylor

(Mr Ripoli) and preening, flamboyant frontman

Freddie Mercury (Mr Lyras). The startled audience

was treated to a pulsating medley of Queen

standards, led by Mr Vass performing a Queen-

inspired rendition of the 20th Century Fox Fanfare,

followed by our crew’s precise rendition of the

band’s signature tune Bohemian Rhapsody, before

unleashing inspired, thumping versions of Another

One Bites the Dust and We Will Rock You, which had

the crowd primed for a great night’s partying.

Everyone had a wonderful night, with students

Jerelyn Temple and Kyara Reading presenting

heartfelt awards to their peers and the staff giving

the students a run for their money in the energetic

dancing stakes. The night ended as all good rock gigs

should- with the crowd clamouring for more…and

everyone wondering what theme our unpredictable,

crazy crew will dazzle everyone with next year.

Only one way to find out: BE THERE!!!

Studentss and staff will like to thank Mr Lyras for

organizing the great event.

Senior School Report

Reservoir High Newsletter | Term 4, Issue 6SENIOR SCHOOL Page 10

Dear parents/guardians,

Finishing with a bang!!

This past week has seen the 2018 Senior School wrap

up for another year.

Let’s start with the event of the year on every social

calendar, the 2018 Year 12 formal. Students and

staff enjoyed an evening out at Normanby House

Reception Centre. It was a great evening where

students and staff could let their hair down and

celebrate a year of hard work. The students all looked

stunning and could rival the best of Hollywood on a

red carpet.

Wednesday November 21 was also the final Year 12

exam at the school (or anywhere for that matter).

It’s been a long four week process and the students

displayed a great sense of maturity and drive during

the exams. Majority of the exams they walked out

with smiles on their faces feeling confident on what

they had just completed (the faces looked nervous to

begin with). December 14 the results will be released

and I hope all students are happy with what they

receive and know there’s always a pathway to where

they want to go.

The Year 11 students also had their exams recently

and they also approached these with maturity and

took them very seriously. The results I’m seeing so far

are quite positive so that’s a good sign for next year.

Last week the students began their Year 12 journey

by completing jumpstart and should have a good

understanding on what next year will bring for them.

The holidays are a great time to prepare for the year

ahead and complete any holiday homework they

have received.

From everyone in the Senior School, we hope you

have a great festive season and look forward to

seeing those who will be back next year when we

start it all over again.

Yours sincerely,

On Wednesday November 14 2018 Linda Angeloni

from the State Library of Victoria visited Reservoir

High School. We were one of a group of State

Government Schools and Private Schools that were

approached to take part in a research task.

Year 9 & 10 SEAL Humanities classes and their

teachers were part of this initiative. The research

finding will be linked into a multimillion dollar

redevelopment of State Library library spaces and

programs.

“We were one of a group of State Government Schools and Private Schools that were approached to take part in a research task.”

Students were surveyed for their insights into

research in our modern age in a creative and

interesting double period session. The workshop

involved testing, ideation and small group

discussions, modelling aspects of the design thinking

process to students. Teachers were interviewed on

how they felt sample approaches would work on

students.

Both students and staff found it a very engaging

process. The presenters really worked well with our

students and we look forward to seeing the final

results.

Reservoir High Newsletter | Term 4, Issue 6YOUTH HEALTH CONFERENCE Page 12

Reservoir High recently received an invitation from Dr

Lena Sanci from the faculty of Medicine at Melbourne

University, with the approval from the Department of

Education, for two of our students to attend the Youth

Health Conference at the Marriott Hotel in Surfer’s

Paradise so that they could be part of the keynote

address of Dr Lena Sanci. She was there to outline

and promote the benefits of the Doctors in Schools

Program that is currently being implemented in over

100 schools in Victoria.

It was a great privilege for Kirsten Logronio and

Jerelyn Temple to be selected to present the

student voice on this initiative. With their genuine

and heartfelt approach, they won over an audience

of more than 300 Queensland participants from all

sectors of the medical field – doctors, social workers,

psychologists, university medical student, teachers

and other people interested in youth health matters.

(Below are some comments from Dr Lena Sanci) “Again I cannot re-iterate enough what a major impact Kirsten and Jerelyn had on the audience and what

Youth Health Conference On The Gold Coast

an asset to the program it was to have them present with me on that day. The power of the youth voice is overwhelming and their authentic and heartfelt feedback would make the Premier proud of what the program is achieving.

At the end, their responses to my questions show that from their perspective the program is also de-stigmatising help-seeking, normalising help-seeking if feeling unwell, increasing health literacy and connectedness to the school, and commitment to health care:

‘What effect have you noticed at school since it started?

‘We care about each other more and suggest ‘go see the doctor’ if someone is feeling bad.’

‘What reaction did other students have if they knew someone had gone to the Doctor?’

‘Well initially they would hide it but now they are happy to share it and no one cares if you have been to see

the doctor.’

Page 13: Term 4 | Issue #6 Reservoir High Newsletterreservoirhs.vic.edu.au/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/Novembers-Newsletter.pdfIt gives me great pleasure to announce the 2019 School Captains

Reservoir High Newsletter | Term 4, Issue 6 YOUTH HEALTH CONFERENCE Page 13

‘Has it had any other effect on the students?’

‘We ask health questions more in class even of the teachers and teachers happier to answer.’

‘And for final word, this program depends on a lot of partnerships and other pieces of the puzzle, if one falls over it might put it at risk - what would you do if we took the program away?’

‘We would escalate through school council to get it back… We would protest and even try to bring the doctor back ourselves’!!

The audience were also impressed by the amount of

thought and teamwork that has gone into the whole

program and very envious of Victoria!! Our challenge

now is to accurately capture whether these sort of

outcomes are occurring across all 100 schools.

Reservoir is also very fortunate to have a very

dedicated GP in the program and she should be

treasured! But indeed also the school’s health and

wellbeing leads are also fantastic. We know this

because the wonderful doctor also services another

school where the school program lead has changed

and there has been a changeover of three principals

in the year, and consequently not as many students

are supported to attend.”Lena Sanci | Head / Associate Professor MBBS., PhD., FRACGP

Language learning enhances first language literacy,

critical analysis, communication and problem solving.

We live in a world of increased mobility between

countries for work and leisure. Learning a second

Language helps to prepare students for the twenty-

first century, where they will be able to engage

with, acknowledge and value cultural differences.

Learning more than one language has never before

been more relevant or important as our everyday

lives become more globalised and interconnected.

HIGHLIGHTS THIS YEAR INCLUDED:

• Year 7s were entertained by the hilarious

comedy act ‘Mission Gnocchi’. It has a huge success

and students liked it because it “brought together

many elements of drama and used both English and

Italian. It was funny and incorporated the audience”.

The use of humour enabled students to “learn how to

pronounce Italian words and what they mean.”

• Year 8s utilized the home economics facilities

to cook pasta. It was agreed by all the students

that the lesson was...delizioso! Many students took

the recipe home to replicate them at home-Buon

appetito

Ciao,• Year 8 Students enjoyed a lovely Spring day

at Lygon Street, Carlton. They visited the ‘Museo

Italiano’, a museum dedicated to the contribution

of Italians to Australia. They discovered facts, like

how the Italians introduced espresso machines to

Australia. After they walked down ‘Little Italy’ to see

the impact of Italian migration, not before stopping at

a pizzeria for lunch. With a gelato in hand we finished

the afternoon on a sweet note.

Buon studio!

Lygon Street ExcursionOn a rainy (and later sunny) Friday of November,

mine and other Year 8 classes had a fascinating

experience learning about the Italian culture, outside

of class. The long wait of the one hour tram ride

was worth it. Because as soon as we went off the

tram, we had a 20 minute walk ahead of us. Lastly

we arrived, standing near the only modern doors

on the street near Lygon. Once Mr Sirianni told us

something and gave us a booklet, we were finally

able to have a look inside the new-fashioned, state-

of-the art history of Italy. As boring as it might seem,

we found out amazing stuff. There were a huge

number of immigrants from Italy to Australia, a lot

of them making their own changes here, like one,

installed one of the first coffee machines, and another

grew up to be a famous cricketer. A movie on a giant

screen told us about the young immigrants and their

experience in our country. There were even displays

of the tools the Italians brought from their country

or made here. Some of these are- canning tools,

clippers and an accordion. After everyone filled out

their booklet, we were ready to go for the real treat.

Brunetti was only a short walk away and the place

looked amazing. Some ordered gelato as it was

a very dry day, however I wanted the great Italian

desserts. My fruit cake tasted amazing, however a

little over-sweetened. After a fulfilled morning tea,

we went straight to lunch. Another short walk. The

little restaurant managed to fit us all in and after a

long wait we got the pizza (which was the usual –

Hawaiian and Margherita). It was bigger than any

pizzeria would serve you and in 5 minutes everyone

was full. Another 20 minutes and we were out of

there, with a gelato in our hand and the sun on our

face (the rain had stopped) walking around Lygon

Street. The park nearby was the meeting place and

everyone got there earlier. Thanks to Charlotte Carter

from 8D almost everyone got a little cycling done on

the day. After a few group photos and our class (8D)

photo, the teachers had come for us. Everyone had

had enough for the day, and were all ready to leave.

PASTA DI CASA

Year 8 Italian classes have been busy making pasta

from scratch. They made the dough, rolled it out and

cut various shapes. All the hard work was worth it,

the pasta was perfetto e delizioso.

A big thanks to Ms Guerra, Ms Ryan and Ms Fairfax

for helping out.

Dear Reservoir High community,

Last Tuesday we held our ”Spring Music Showcase” to

a near full audience in our fantastic Performing Arts

Centre.

All the performers and staff did a sensational job.

We had 24 acts involving 75 students. We rocked

out to “You Give Love a Bad Name”, were taken back

to Paris for a rendition of Eric Satie’s “Gymnopedie

number 1” and you couldn’t forget the piano solo

of “Bohemian Rhapsody”. To host the night we had

Kevin and Patrick and all of the fancy sound, lighting

and curtain work was done by our very calm and

capable student tech crew. Very professional indeed!

A big thanks to the Instrumental Music staff… Myself

and all of the students are very lucky to have such

talented musicians and dedicated teachers to

put on Concerts like last night. We even put on a

smorgasbord of gourmet food!

Spring Music ShowcaseWe also released our “triple” CD. Students had a

good laugh at the photos and how they sounded on

a professional CD!!

“Last Tuesday we held our ”Spring Music

Showcase” to a near full audience in our fantastic Performing Arts Centre.”

I think everyone had a good time and I’m sure there

were a lot of proud parents, students and teachers!!

Many thanks and… “Reservoir Rocks!”

On Monday, November 19th the Year 9 Advance

class visited Latrobe Village for our annual Christmas

Celebration. The students performed a Christmas

story, the student choir led Christmas carols and

songs and Christmas jokes were told.

The students then shared a Christmas themed

morning tea with the residents and our Santa (Nathan

Hibbins) handed out presents and cards. If we weren’t

in the Christmas spirit prior to this event we certainly

were afterwards!! We would like to thank Michael

and Kathryn and all the residents for their continued

support of our activities and for spending time with

and sharing their experiences with our students.
