Principal’s Report Dear Parents and Carers,
Premier’s Spelling Bee
Last week four of our students represented our
school at the district finals of the Premier’s
Spelling Bee. Artin K and Julian N competed in
the junior division and Jan A and Ansh P
competed in the senior division. All four
students did well when faced with some
extremely difficult words to spell. Special
congratulations to Julian N who placed first in
his division and will now compete at the
regional level of the competition.
Book Week Activities
Last week we celebrated Book Week with an incursion, a Book Parade and a Book Swap. It was wonderful to
see students enjoying these activities that promoted reading, as well as raising funds for the Indigenous
Literacy Foundation through the Book Swap. Thank you to Ms Spender, Ms Taylor, Ms Pogainis and Ms Mafi
for their huge efforts in coordinating these events.
The more that you read, the more things you will know.
The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.
You can find magic wherever you look.

Staff Professional learning
Last week all teaching staff participated in a fantastic professional
learning session with staff from our Community of Schools. It was
presented by Dan Haesler and was focused on how having a
growth mindset can support students in maximising their potential
and support us in helping them achieve their potential. The staff
from all five schools in attendance gave very positive feedback
about the session. It is really valuable to work as a Community of
Schools, with one advantage being the ability to access speakers
that as individual schools we possibly could not.
Be Responsible. Be Respectful. Strive for Success.
Stage 3 Public Speaking Incursion
This week our Stage 3 students have been participating in a series of workshops centred on public speaking.
The workshops cover areas such as conflict resolution, presenting messages clearly and confidently and tools
to handle change. These workshops are great preparation for commencing high school for our Year 6 students
and for presenting leader speeches for our Year 5 students.
2019 Kindergarten
All enrolment forms for 2019 Kindergarten should be submitted before the end of this term as we will be posting
letters detailing our Transition Program this month.
Summer Uniforms
The official changeover date for summer uniforms is from the start of Term 4. However, where there are days of
warm weather over the next few weeks, students are welcome to wear their summer uniform.
Uniform Options for Girls
As part of the new Department of Education Uniform Policy, all schools will be required to provide an option for
girls to wear pants (Winter) or shorts (Summer). We already have a pants option for Winter. We have also
previously had a shorts option for Summer but the Uniform Shop no longer uses this supplier and the style was
not a popular option. Leigh Hudson has kindly sourced new options for shorts and she presented these at the P
& C meeting this week. Shortly we will be seeking input from staff, students and parents to determine with
which option we will proceed. Look out for information next week regarding a survey you can complete to offer
your input.
Positive Behaviour for Learning
During this fortnight all classes are revising expectations for assembly and how our three school values apply in
this setting. The Week 7 recipients of our PBL draw were Fletcher B and Annemieke T.
Striver badges
Congratulations to the following students who received a Striver badge at our last assembly:

Great Book Swap Wednesday 5 September was Indigenous Literacy Day and NPS held our first ever ‘Great Book Swap’ to raise
funds for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. The day was a great success and we raised approximately $600.
This money will go towards funding important literacy programs in remote Australian communities. A very big
thank you is extended to all the parents who helped on the day with setting up and selling the books. The
Library Monitors and class SRC Reps were also a big help on the day. Of course, we would not have had any
books to sell if the NPS community had not been so generous with their book donations, so thanks to everyone
who donated books. We hope everyone enjoyed the experience of shopping for a new book and went home
with an interesting book to read.

Tell Them From Me
Parent Survey Now Open
For the next three weeks, our school will be participating in the Partners in Learning parent survey, another part
of the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys (student, teacher and parent surveys) on student engagement. The
survey asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing
and engagement.
Running this survey will help our school understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their child’s
experience at school. These include: communication between parents/carers and staff, activities and practices
at home and parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and behaviour. This valuable feedback will
help our school make practical improvements.
The survey is conducted entirely online on smartphones, iPads, tablets, laptops or computers. The survey will
typically take 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely confidential. The parent survey will be
conducted between 5 September and 26 September. Although participating in the survey is entirely voluntary,
your responses are very much appreciated. The survey is available in 23 languages.
More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au.
To access the survey for our school go to:

P&C Meeting
A huge thank you to everyone who came along to our last P&C meeting for Term 3. We had a great turn out
and a friendly and productive meeting. Working together we have considered and passed the following motions:
1. An amendment to the P&C’s constitution. Passed.
2. A proposal for small ‘thank you’ gifts for our long-serving committee members. Passed.
3. A new proposal for a mural. Passed.
4. A proposal that the P&C reserves sufficient funds (approx. $5,000) to securely fence the carpark end of the
K-1 playground. [Postponed pending the completion of work in this playground.]
5. A proposal that the P&C contribute $500 towards to cost of the Staff Appreciation Dinner. Passed.
6. A proposal that the P&C budget for $2000 (i.e. $500 per term) for the upkeep of the grounds. [Postponed for
the consideration of the new 2019 committee]
3. A proposal that the P&C contribute up to $10,000 towards the cost of a perimeter fence along Pennant Hills
Rd. Passed
4. A proposal that the P&C contribute approx. $8000 towards the replacement of the smartboards in 3/4W and
KR. Passed.
5. A proposal that the P&C contributes $8000 towards the purchase of robotics equipment for the School
[Postponed for the consideration of the 2019 committee.]
6. A proposal that the P&C contributes $5000 towards the costs of new K-2 readers. Passed.
7. A proposal that the P&C contributes $3000 towards the costs of new 3-6 Maths Boxes. Passed.
8. A proposal re the NPS P&C Communications role. Passed.
This is a truly fantastic result and I am very grateful to everyone who came along and helped make decisions
about how we spend the money you have donated to the P&C in order to help us support the School. Of
course, we could not be in a position to spend this money without the hard work of our committed volunteers
who fundraise tirelessly throughout the year. If you are passionate about helping the P&C achieve great results
like this, please consider stepping up for a role next year.
Thanks to the School
At our meeting on Monday, Ms Gorrell and members of the School executive gave a presentation explaining
the process of external validation. The process is rigorous and demanding, requiring hours of preparation and
thoughtful reflection on the past, present and future of the School. The results reported were impressive and I
know everyone will want to share with me in thanking our wonderful staff for all that they do ‘above and beyond’
in order to make our School such a special place.
Christmas Gift Charity
Each year for the past few years, I have suggested a charity which the P&C might support at our Christmas
singing event. In the past, we have supported the Hornsby Women’s Shelter and I would be very happy to
continue to do this, however I also wondered whether this year we might consider a drought-relief charity and
(to this end) wondered whether you would like to send me some suggestions ahead of the meeting in Week 3,
Term 4.
In case you missed it…
This year, I have had the opportunity to work with an enthusiastic, dedicated and experienced committee. As I
indicated last week, I will not be seeking re-election as P&C president next year. The following people have
also indicated that they will not be standing for election to these roles for 2019:
Be Responsible. Be Respectful. Strive for Success.
Scott Veale (Secretary and Vice President); Yemi Oluwi (Treasurer); Joe Maisano (Building Fund
Coordinator); Leigh Hudson (Uniform Shop and Vice President); Ruth Archer (Canteen) and Kriena Thorp
(Grounds Coordinator); Lisa Manton (Communications); Emma Veale (Fundraising Coordinator).
On your behalf I would like to extend our gratitude to this great team! I hope to say more about each of them
and their service to our school at our AGM.
New president
At the AGM in Term 4 I will not be seeking re-election as President of the P&C. If you would like to be
considered for this role, please get in touch. Ideally, it would be good to indicate your intention to stand well
ahead of the AGM. I am more than happy to chat with you and to facilitate a meeting between you and the
School.
Kind regards,
Elly Cowan
P & C President
