Last week we celebrated Australian children's literature with this year’s theme: Reading is My Secret Power. Each class shared their outstanding Book Week work at Gathering.

We explore quality literature every day in our learning and books are an integral part of our learning programs. Remembering also that reading is an activity for fun and enjoyment. What better way to relax and spend time with your children than enjoying reading and sharing a book together!

Book Fair is continuing this week with viewing available before school, at recess and lunch until Wednesday.

Father’s Day Breakfast

On Friday 30th August we will be hosting a Father’s Day Breakfast at school with a delicious hot breakfast for all fathers, grandfathers, uncles and father figures in our lives.

Breakfast will be served from 8:15am to 9:00am with delicious bacon and egg rolls as well as pancakes, juice, tea and coffee for everyone.

The Father’s Day raffles will also be drawn at the end of the breakfast.

The P and C still need volunteers to help cook and serve breakfast in the morning. Anyone who can help please contact P&C President Joanne Tracey.

Abundant Opportunities

One of our school priorities is ‘student engagement and opportunity’ and it is an area our school invests a lot of time and money into.

Learning is most effective when it has purpose and adds meaning to our own lives. Having extraordinary experiences is very important to learning. It gives us topics to talk about, write about and read about , expanding our knowledge and vocabulary.

Looking at the calendar we have lots of these experiences coming up: dance workshops, a theatre excursion, Toonschool, Musica Viva and the list goes

on. Just look at the important dates to see how much is happening at our school. When you look back at the past 2 weeks we have had a theatre visit, spelling bee, Wildman show and Thalgarrah excursions.

Most are for free or greatly subsidised by the school with parents usually charged less than half of the actual costs. Every child being involved is hugely important as class work will be based on these experiences and without them we would not be growing our knowledge of the world and the opportunities in life every day.

Attendance Rewards

On Friday 28 children received a canteen voucher for being at school and on time 98% or more in the past 5 weeks. Congratulations to all those children who are here on time and ready to learn each and every day.

One of the concerning things I notice when going through attendance reports is how quickly late arrivals add up to missing a whole day of school, or in some cases a whole week!

Being late means a child misses the extremely important start of the daily English lesson when the morning’s work is introduced and explained. Children are often embarrassed or uncomfortable walking in to class late.

Being at school before the bell gives you time to settle in and socialise before learning starts.

Transition

This week our Transition class students will start the second day of school experience each week. This year the opportunity to experience school will be offered every Wednesday and Thursday through to the end of the school year. We still have a few places left in this class for any child who will be starting school next year. We have seen a huge improvement already in the children who are attending in their readiness for school in 2020. If you know of any child starting Kindergarten in 2020, please let them know of this wonderful opportunity and experience to prepare for school. Star Awards

“You’re a Star Award” certificates were presented at this morning’s assembly to successful students who have been using the You Can Do It keys to success and demonstrating persistence, resilience, organisation, getting along and confidence.

Congratulations to our recipients: Lincoln, Jamarl and Rosanna.

News From 3/4 Being creative can get messy but the end result is

amazing!! Roald Dahl’s Roly Poly bird has taken over

the office foyer - come and see for yourselves just how

imaginative the students in 3/4 can be. The progress

they have made in visual arts is outstanding and they

are showing so much confidence in their abilities.

1/2 News

Last Tuesday Year 1/2 went out to Thalgarrah for the

day. We had a fantastic day exploring different

shelters for all types of animals. We even got to build

our own shelter for an animal following instructions.

News from 5/6 Thalgarrah delivers again!

5/6– short of quite a few students due to Stewart

House– visited Thalgarrah last week– and once again

the Kids Vs Wild program did not disappoint! Despite

the wind students went on an orienteering course and

then made shelters out of some given supplies.

Students prepared a small cooking fire and cooked the

teachers lunch (and a fine job they did too!).

Kindergarten News

On Thursday last week Kindergarten and Transition went on an excursion to Thalgarrah.

They had a wonderful time investigating the nature play areas.
