Dear Children, Parents and Caregivers,
On Monday we celebrate the Feast of the Assumption of Mary. This special
feast day is important in our Church calendar and we will be attending Mass at
9:15am. We encourage you to join us as we honour Mary our Mother.
On Monday we begin the celebrations for Book Week which will culminate in
a HUGE day on Friday. We encourage the children (and the staff) to come to
school in Fancy-Dress. It’s always a lot of fun and the Parade will be held in
the Senior Yard at 9:15am. Everyone is welcome to attend. Please see
advertisements in today’s newsletter about the other exciting things that will
happen on Friday 19th.
It’s actually going to be two exciting Fridays in a row, because the Friday after
Book Week is St. Monica’s Feast Day - on 26th August. We are still planning
for this day, so keep an eye out for the final list of events in next week’s
Newsletter.
My sincere congratulations to Julie Bibby, Jess Lothian and Jane Campbell
who organised a very successful Ladies Night last Friday. The details are all in
Ange Horton’s report, including the huge amount of money raised as a result
of this event. Well done one and all.
Well done to the Grade Ones who made their own Damper and
hand-made butter during the week. With the addition of a little
bit of store-bought jam, the children were grinning from ear to
ear as they consumed their olden-day snacks. Delicious!
Please note in today’s Newsletter I have included information
about the final two of our four Closure Days for 2016.
Regards,
Peter Moore

Let Your Light Shine No-one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all
in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and
Last Sunday Lachlan Larobina, Christian Russo, Max Talone, Xavier Vandrine, Ben
Maltman, Henry Carew and Alex Nguyen from Grade 3 played for Moonee Valley in the
Under 10 (Div 7) Grand Final against Pascoe Vale. Samuel Picton was also part of the team.
Unfortunately the boys came Runners up, but they had a fantastic season and for their first
year of playing football, it was great for them to make it into the Grand Final.
Congratulations boys!!
Term 4 School Closure Days:
Monday 3rd October

Teachers who love teaching … teach students to love learning! Here are some examples of passionate ‘teaching and learning' at St Monica's this week!
Bread versus Damper???
Have you ever thought about how long it takes to make bread rather than just buying a loaf from the
supermarket? As part of their learning comparing and contrasting the olden days to the current day, the
Year 1 students made ‘damper’ and ‘butter’.....from scratch! I was so impressed by the writing
experience that followed ….making connections in their learning!
Premiers Reading Challenge
Throughout the duration of the PRM, our school leaders have been reading
picture story books over the speaker for the whole school to enjoy! Maybe you
could make some recommendations to Mrs Bremner or the Year 6 SRC.
Homework!
Students in Year 3 have been taking responsibility for their own learning by
choosing their homework tasks from a matrix that combines Howard Gardners’
Multiple Intelligences and Bloom’s
Taxonomy! Emma is a keen dancer and loves
technology ...so she chose to make up a dance, video it
and email it to her teacher! Well done, Emma!
Community Service
During the week, we had two students from Ave Maria
demonstrating their ‘Faith in Action’ by volunteering
their time at our school. The students helped prepare
packs for the Year 3 students leading up to their Communion. Thankyou!
Patterns
The Foundation students have been caught here thinking about different
shapes, lines and patterns! What do you like to draw?
The Olympics!
Eating time has never been
so entertaining! This week
students were able to watch
some Olympic events while
enjoying their lunch! Which
Olympic story has been
your favourite?
ICAS
At assembly last week the
ICAS Science Awards
were presented. Congratu-
lations to all our partici-
pants. Pictured here are
Lachlan Monger and Myles
Quick, who both achieved
a High Distinction. This
places them in the top
1%. Wow! What an
achievement!

ST. MONICA’S PARENTS ASSOCIATION
Ladies Night
Last Friday night a large group of St Monica’s mums, past
and present gathered together for the traditional biennial
“Ladies Night”. As you can see from the photos all had a
great night out with friends old and new. A massive thank
you goes to the three organisers Julie Bibby, Jess Lothian
and Jane Campbell. Not only did Julie, Jess and Jane
ensure everyone had a great time, they managed to raise
over $6,500! Thanks particularly to the major sponsor
Frank Dowling Estate Agents in Essendon; we really
appreciate your support and involvement. Congratulations
to Grace Carew and Josie Russo who won the $1000 cash
prize!
St Monica’s vs St Vincent’s Footy Match
You’ve no doubt seen the notices imploring dads and teachers (we’re looking at you Mr Di Nuzzo!) to
get involved to help break the St Vincent’s 5-year winning streak. Thanks to Ben Hogan and Paul
Barlow, 2016 may be the year St Monica’s can regain some dignity with a win. Ben and Paul have rallied
the dads by organising regular training sessions, most recently last Sunday at Windy Hill where a
massive 33 dads turned up to train! Everyone is welcome to attend the match on Saturday 3rd September,
please feel free to contact Ben or Paul if you’d like to get involved. See photos below.
The next Parents Association meeting is Tuesday 6th September at 7:30. It’s a great way to keep informed
of what is happening and to have your say about things, we’d love to see you there.
Thanks,
Ange Horton & Cathy McNeill

UPDATES
Look at the number of books read by students at St. Monica’s for the Premiers Reading Challenge so far!
Can you answer the following questions?
From the chart above can you determine the number of books that have been read in total?
What % of this total number of books have been read by each year level?
These totals do not include the many books that have been read in classrooms and over the P.A by Year 6
children, while students eat their lunch. These titles and many more still need to be uploaded onto the
system.
Imagine the interesting vocabulary and amazing concepts that children would have encountered
while reading these books!
I wonder how many books will have been read by Friday 2nd September, 2016 when we finish the chal-
lenge at St Monica’s.
Happy reading!

Last Monday at snack time, the year 3 and 4 book club was held. The book
club people did some independent reading of novels and then Mrs Bremner
read a poem from a book that she read when she was in year 3! Amy
Willoughby from 3M wrote about her experience at her first ever book club
and it is included below.

My First Book Club
Hi, my name is Amy Willoughby and
I went to my first ever Book Club on
Monday. I brought my snack and the
book Matilda by Roald Dahl. To
begin with, we listened to Mrs
Bremner read a poem she loved when
she grew up. She found out that the
poem was sad. Next I read
Independently from Matilda where
Mrs Honey found out about Matilda’s
incredible knowledge.

Welcome back to school everyone!
We are now in Term 3, and time is racing by! It feels like we've been back a week, but we are now actually
in week five! The students here at St Monica's are all progressing marvellously, and looking for perfor-
mance opportunities later this term. One such example is Angus Benson on Trombone and Sabrina Kirk on
Clarinet. These two are currently working very hard on duets, such as Jolly Old St. Nicholas. These two
will premiere very soon! Later in the semester we will be running free introductory lessons for Trumpet
and Trombone students.
If this interests you please email Amber at [email protected] or call Musicorp on 1300 858

All the best,

With Luke This week’s article we will be looking at the rivalries of the AFL. The AFL is a rough game and matches between
rivals tend to be full of exciting atmosphere. First thing we will be looking at the rivals from Victoria. Victoria has
the most teams playing in the AFL therefore there tends to be a lot of rivalry between the teams.
Collingwood are traditional rivals with everyone because every hates them, but the Collingwood rivalry we will be
taking a look at is between Collingwood and Carlton. These two clubs have been traditional rivals for decades.
They have both played in some fantastic Grand Finals. The best one was in 1970 when Collingwood were up by
44 points at half time and ended up losing. A terrific mark was taken by Alex Jesaulenko and 121,696 people
packed into the MCG to watch the two teams play a fantastic game of football.
The next Grand Final was the 1979 Grand Final. The reason why this Grand Final was special was because Wayne
Harmes from Carlton kicked along the boundary and managed to tap the ball back in
(even though the ball was out) into the path of Ken Sheldon who goaled. Carlton won
by 5 points. Playing at fullback for Carlton in that grand final was Geoff Southby,
grandfather of Ethan (Year 3) and Xavier Sharkey (Year 1).
Another rivalry is the Hawthorn Essendon rivalry. This rivalry has produced some
controversial matches. It started in 1983 when the two teams met in a Grand Final.
The Hawks were winners in the match winning by 87 point winners. Essendon
however won the 1984 Grand Final by 24 points and the 1985 Grand Final by 78
points. In 1988 Dermott Brereton ran through the Essendon ¾ time huddle which
caused a lot of controversy. In 2004 the two teams played in a line in the sand game
which Essendon went into as hot favourites and were considered a top 4 chance.
Hawthorn, who had played in 7 grand finals in a row between 1983-1989 and also
1991 and were victorious in 5 of those occasions were struggling at this stage. Greats
of the club had come out and said how bad Hawthorn were. The game had multiple fights and lots of suspensions
and was then known as the “line in the sand” game.
The next rivalry is another Hawthorn one which is Hawthorn and Geelong. This rivalry started at the end of the
2008 Grand Final when Geelong went in as premiership favourites and lost the game. The reason why it was so
big was because Paul Chapman said “We’ve said to ourselves if we ever let Hawthorn beat us again we will hurt
from that” Jeff Kennett said “What they don't have, I think, is the quality of some of our players; they don't have
the psychological drive we have. We've beaten Geelong when it matters”. Geelong and Hawthorn went on to play
in 11 fantastic encounters with 10 of them being less than 20 points, including a point after the siren, a goal after
the siren and a 30 point comeback.
Now we will look at a rivalry away from Victoria and it’s the Port Adelaide and Adelaide game. In South
Australian National Football league (SANFL) Port Adelaide won 36 premierships and Adelaide never had a
SANFL team. The two teams have played 40 times and Port have won 20 and Adelaide have one 19.
This week’s game I will be analysing the Hawthorn and North Melbourne game. Going on our theme of rivalries
the two teams have played 2 fierce encounters in the past few years. The first encounter was when North
Melbourne’s Drew Petrie accused Hawthorn’s Brian Lake of choking him. The Hawthorn player got a four week
suspension. The next one was a fiery encounter because Hawthorn’s captain Luke Hodge punched Andrew
Swallow and was suspended for three weeks and Hawthorn’s Jordan Lewis got two weeks for striking Todd
Goldstein to the head. These two teams were both powerful through the 1970’s and North played in 4 premierships
in a row with three of them being against Hawthorn and North winning one of them. The last time these two teams
met North Melbourne were celebrating their 1975 Grand Final reunion and North were seeking revenge on
Hawthorn. For North they just fell short losing by 5 points. Hawthorn will be looking to improve after their loss to
Melbourne last week and will be looking to keep top spot.

St Monica’s Sportsman’s Night -
Seeking Auction & Raffle Prizes
Are you or someone you know able to donate a
prize for this year’s Sportsman’s Night on 7th
October? Signed football jumpers, holidays, gift
vouchers, racing, football and golf tickets are
just some of the items auctioned or raffled at
our last event.
No item is too big or too small! Everything
raised from the sale of these items goes towards
the school.
If you think you can help out, please get in
touch with Luke Mahoney (0412 119 320) or
Gerry Carew (0439 636 471).
More details on the night to be announced soon.
