Term 2, Week 8 - Wednesday 10 June 2015 Kia ora families Last week I encouraged you to ask your child(ren) the following questions; Where do you choose to learn in your class/studio and why? Who do you choose to learn with and why? Are you making sensible choices and if not what do you intend to do about it? What do you learn from your different teachers? What can I do to help you? Last year we worked with a representative from the Brain Wave Trust (Nathan Makiri-Wallis) Nathan shared with us the factors that are necessary for a child to be receptive for learning. The release of endorphins are required to allow learning to occur, the four activities that are top of the list for the release of endorphins are: Singing Laughter Movement Relationship All of these need to be present in an effective and nurturing learning environment. At Waitākiri School we ensure we have daily exercise, regular singing (as a way of learning days of the week etc or just for fun!), teachers work hard to develop respectful and supportive relationships with children and laughter is welcomed! So as well as the serious questions I encourage you to chat with your child about the fun things they do at school, about their relationship with their teacher(s), get them to sing a song they are learning and ask them to tell you about the movement they did in daily exercise or play breaks. At home if you want to see the endorphins flow have a joke time at the dinner table (yes turn off the TV and sit together to chat!) Go for a walk, run, ride with your with your child (movement) sing a song together- all of these build lasting relationships. To help your child make the most of home learning time (reading, basic facts, REAL CHOICES Challenges) it is important the experience is enjoyable so see if the inclusion of one of the 'endorphin strategies' helps. For younger children it might just be reading the daily reading book is done on your lap (relationship building) or that basic facts are done to a tune (singing) of that your child does some home learning and takes an activity break (movement) or that you enjoy a good laugh in the middle of it all or even finish with a joke or two!

Term 2, Week 8 - Wednesday 10 June 2015 Kia ora families Last week I encouraged you to ask your child(ren) the following questions;

Where do you choose to learn in your class/studio and why?

Who do you choose to learn with and why?

Are you making sensible choices and if not what do you intend to do about it?

What do you learn from your different teachers?

What can I do to help you?

Last year we worked with a representative from the Brain Wave Trust (Nathan Makiri-Wallis) Nathan shared with us the factors that are necessary for a child to be receptive for learning. The release of endorphins are required to allow learning to occur, the four activities that are top of the list for the release of endorphins are:

Singing

Laughter

Movement

Relationship

All of these need to be present in an effective and nurturing learning environment.

STATIONERY ITEMS FOR VANUATU This would not have been possible without the help of North West Kiwanis Club. It is heart-warming what can be done when communities come together. Thank you Barb Shipley for allowing

the use of your home for packing and storing before despatching these goods.

SHELBY, ROOM 35

Growing tomatoes Making tomato soup

My name is Shelby, I am 8 years old in room 35 at Waitakiri Primary School - River Campus. Over the summer I helped grow tomatoes in my granddad’s garden. We picked them and I helped make them into soup with my grandma. I sold the soup, with the help of my friends, for $1 a cup to "Team Real Learners". $60 was raised for KidsCan. I hope this helps some children in need. Shelby

CARA’S REPORT At Queen’s Birthday weekend my Dad, brother and I competed in the National ATV speedway champs at Ellesmere speedway track and the South Island ATV motocross champs at a purpose built track in Amberley. In the speedway we competed in five races and overall my brother came fourth and I came third. The main event (the South Island Champs) was held over two days and consisted of seven races with my brother finishing second and myself not too far behind on fourth. In the class we compete, you are allowed a bike up to 100cc. We must wear a helmet, boots, goggles, gloves, chest armour and a neck brace to protect us while riding. We really enjoy ATV racing. 20 FAMINE DONATION AND SPONSORSHIP COLLECTION Congratulations to all of our children who participated in this year's 20 Hour Famine to help children in Bangladesh. It's now time to be collecting in the money raised. Once the collection has been completed the sponsorship book and money from cash donations and sponsorship needs to be put into the ziploc bag and then handed into the school office by Friday, 19th June, for banking. Thanks heaps to those who have already returned sponsorship money to school. Those Year 4-6 children doing REAL CHOICES CHALLENGES will be able to get this challenge signed off by their teacher after they have returned their ziploc bags to the office. REAL CHOICES CHALLENGES It's been great to hear about the different challenges our Year 4-6 children have undertaken as part of REAL Choices Challenges and their enthusiasm and commitment towards them. Children need to be having the challenges tracked and signed off by their home-base teacher. The end of Week 2, Term 3 (31 July) is when half of the challenges need to have been completed by each student and signed off, or that they are at the mid-point of completing the middle challenge. 'Right on Track' Certificates will be presented at a Learning Celebration to those who are on track towards achieving their REAL Choices Badge at the end of the year.
