It’s that time of year again when all our students are busy completing the Premier’s Reading Challenge. Mrs Coombes is co-ordinating this year’s challenge. Some of the selected books are on display at the back of the Library and on top of bookshelves. All suitable reading challenge books are clearly marked with the appropriate spine sticker for easier access.

Debating On Wednesday, 23

rd May 2018 Pretty Beach Public School

participated in the first round of the Premiers Debating Challenge. Neilla Bradstreet, Frankie Scott, Lucia Sterland and Ava Thomas travelled to Ettalong Public School for the first debate. Both schools were nervous yet excited and

they all really enjoyed the experience. The debate topic was ‘boys and girls should always attend different schools’. We didn’t win the coin toss which meant we were the affirmative team. We therefore had to agree with the topic. Both teams were very persuasive and it was a close round to decide the winner. Finally, the result was in favour of the affirmative team, We WON!! How exciting, our debating team have some points to work on for next time and we cannot wait to keep improving! Kate McKinney Teacher

Mothers Day Brekkie & Biggest Morning Tea

On Friday 11 May we had a wonderful turn out to celebrate Mother's Day with the students. The amazing spread of food was generously supplied by Cathy Baker from Belle Property. This was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Students were also able to enjoy some sporting activities with their families before starting classes for the day. During the morning, donations were collected for The Cancer Council's Biggest Morning Tea and we would like to thank everyone for contributing. $235 was raised. A very big thank you also to Hair Apparent, Moochinside and The Fat Goose for donating the Lucky Door Prizes for this event. Congratulations to the prize winners. Mrs Lee West

Make Online Payments It is possible for parents to make online payments to the school for amounts owing for students, via a secure payment page hosted by Westpac. Payments can be made using either a Visa or MasterCard credit or debit card, and can be made via computer, tablet or mobile phone. The payment page is accessed from the front page of the school’s website by selecting $ Make a payment. Items that can be paid include voluntary school contributions, subject contributions, excursions, sales to students and creative and practical arts activities. There is also a category called ‘Other’ to cover items not covered in the previous headings, eg. In school performances, sport etc. ‘Other’ can be used to make a complete payment of a school Statement of Account. When you access the $ Make a payment you must enter:

the students name

class

date of birth

These details are entered each time you make a payment as student information is not held within the payment system. This is a secure payment system hosted by Westpac to ensure that your credit/debit card details are captured in a secure manner, these details are not passed back to the school. You have the ability to check and change any details of the payment before the payment is processed. Receipts can be emailed and/or printed. Details of the payments are passed daily to the school where they will be receipted against your child’s account. As a receipt has been issued from the payment page a further receipt will not be issued by the school. For any enquiries regarding the online payment process please contact the School Administration Office on 43601012.

School Banking…each Monday

Don’t forget to keep saving as one lucky School Banker will win a family trip for up to two adults and three children to Hawaii, USA just by saving. For a chance to win, students will need to make 15 or more School Banking deposits before the end of Term 3 2018 to automatically receive an entry into the competition. Are you using the CommBank Youth App yet? With this app your child can:

Check the balance of their Youth Saver account

View school banking deposits in their transaction history

Track the number of times they have banked towards their next reward

Set up savings goals and monitor progress

Create lists of chores they can do to earn pocket money

So explore the CommBank Youth App to help encourage regular saving. Even if you use the App a notification will also be put in your child’s bank book when they have banked 9 times to enable them to order their reward item the next time they bank. Term 2 Super Saver reward items are now also available…Sparkle Glitter Pens or a Glow Light or a Twister Power Handball from Term 1. Sorry Secret Scratch Pads are no longer available. So don’t forget to bank each Monday!

Work Health and Safety at our school

When visiting our school, if you see potential hazards please report to the office or Principal immediately. We have hazard forms located in the office area. If the hazard is easily rectified without putting yourself in any danger, eg moving a bag from the walkway, please do so. You are still required to report it to the office so steps can be taken to ensure the hazard is addressed. When volunteering at our school please ensure you have been taken through the safety briefing. A copy is kept at the back of the visitors’ lanyard for easy access. In the event of an emergency please follow the instructions of the teacher. If a drill is taking place please do not enter the grounds. Signs will be located at entry points to the school to inform our community that a drill is taking place with the request not to enter.

Health and Safety is everyone’s responsibility

The car park is OUT OF BOUNDS to pedestrian traffic. Please use the path to enter the gate. Please stay safe when entering and exiting our school.

Staff Car Park

We thank our many parents who are respectful of the parking arrangements around and inside the school. The staff car park is only available to staff. Please do not drive into the car

park to pick up or drop off children. Thank you for your assistance.

Mindfulness Program Wrap-Up The Mindful Schools Mindfulness Program finished on Tuesday May 8, with all children receiving a certificate of completion and 4 hours of Mindfulness instruction. I have thoroughly enjoyed sharing the program with the children of Pretty Beach School, and was impressed by the enthusiasm, engagement and improvement in mindfulness application throughout all 7 classes. Children from random classes completed a survey at the beginning of the program answering simple questions that measured 6 key Mindfulness areas. The results from this showed improvements in every single area, these being Ability to Focus, Acceptance of Emotions, Relaxation Skills, Self-Acceptance, Emotional Regulation & Friendship Skills- fantastic results. The feedback from the class teachers during and after the program has also been overwhelmingly positive, and many are continuing to practice daily mindfulness with their own class mindfulness bowls each day. If you're child has not already mentioned their mindful breathing or mindful bodies yet, do prompt them to teach you or share what they found the most interesting or helpful. Many of them are now very proficient at using mindfulness in many situations, including before tests or sports performances, in class, in their friendships or whilst trying to fall asleep at night. As a parent you can further support your chid' mindfulness literacy by referring to the Parent Mindfulness Manual (you can ask the office to email you one if you have not received one yet) and using the scripts, techniques and conversation starters included. Once again, I've really enjoyed sharing Mindfulness with the children and learnt much in the process myself- mostly how easily children can learn and apply mindfulness when they are encouraged and supported to practice it daily. If you have any further questions about the program, please let the school office know and they can arrange a time for you to speak with me. Warmly, Lisa Mount Mindfulness Educator.
