[email protected] Message from the Principal Over the last two weeks we have seen our students (and families) successfully navigate the enormous adjustment of returning back to full-time schooling. As the end of Week 6 draws near, our classes are settled, our students are successfully re-engaging with learning tasks and expectations and our teachers continue to work exceptionally hard to not only deliver high quality learning opportunities but also to create a quality classroom environment where all our students feel safe and supported. These are great outcomes when we consider that we have just experienced another significant adjustment within an extremely unsettled semester. We also acknowledge that there are additional transitions on the horizon, with class restructuring expected to be finalised and in place by Week 9. However, I am confident that our school community will positively adapt and adjust with the resilience and positivity that has been strongly evident over the last few months. I am grateful for the high level of trust across our community and understanding that all potential challenges can be reframed into enriching opportunities when we maintain a steadfast commitment to ensuring decision-making remains 100% student-centred. Staff celebrations It is with great delight that we welcome the newest member of our school community: the gorgeous Louis Ryan Keyes, welcomed into the world by Mrs Kate Keyes and her husband Grant, on Friday 29 May, 2020. Louis is already deeply loved by big brother Harry and by his delighted parents (photo on following page). Thanks to the many members of our school community who have wished Kate well in her pregnancy and waited with anticipation for this announcement. We are delighted for Mrs Keyes and happily pass on the best wishes and congratulations of our school community on your behalf. It is with mixed feelings that we also congratulate the wonderful Mrs West on her recent success in gaining a permanent teaching position at Brooklyn Public School. Mrs West is most deserving of this permanent position and we wholeheartedly wish her continued success in her teaching career. She is going to be most deeply missed by our staff and her class, along with all other students and families who have been positively impacted by her caring, professional teaching over the past four years at PBPS. Whilst Mrs West has begun to prepare for commencing her new position in Week 9 of this term, her thoughts have been steadfastly focused on ensuring that her class will be positively supported by an organised, structured and positive transition process. Our K-1 parents will be reassured in knowing how thoroughly Mrs West is preparing for this transition so that the individual strengths, needs and goals of all her students will be effectively communicated with professional and personal integrity. Our parents will also be reassured that the process of securing an appropriate, high quality and professional teacher to step into the K-1 classroom is already underway. The excellent reputation of our school and our staff has ensured that applications for this position have been of an extremely high quality. Our school leadership team look forward to making a staffing announcement for our 8 th classroom teacher and for Mrs West in the next few weeks. Our third celebration announcement is one of a truly beautiful and generous nature. Our Class Rep parents have planned a “thank you” lunch for our entire school staff for the support provided to our students and families throughout the last few months. This is truly the most wonderful gesture and both myself and our staff feel truly overwhelmed with the generosity and thoughtfulness expressed by our parent community. I have secured approval from our Director Educational Leadership for this celebration lunch to take place with the understanding that there will be minimal visitors on site (limited to food delivery only) and I will personally undertake all the organisation at the school end so that our organising parents aren’t required to be on site. In this way we can comply with current department guidelines and still experience the kindness of this wonderful gift from our school community. On behalf of our staff, thank you to our parents and families for this wonderful gift. For once, it seems, I am at a loss for words. I hope that a simple, heartfelt ‘Thank you’ will suffice. Kind regards, Karen Wardlaw. Term 2 | Week 6 | Thursday 4 June 2020 prettybch-p.schools.nsw.gov.au

Teachers are very proud of their resilience while transitioning back to face-to-face learning. This past fortnight, students have continued to focus on ‘social distancing’ and what this looks like in the classroom and on the playground. We have brainstormed possible activities for lunch time and

ensured hand washing is still happening frequently to

keep us safe. Keep up the wonderful work PBPS 😊

Laura Metcalfe PBL Reward Activities Students worked hard in the first 4 Weeks of Term 2 and eagerly collected Bouddi Points from home and school. With these points, students were able to participate in the choice of a disco, teddy bear picnic, movie and/or having a photo on the school electronic sign! It was so fantastic to see students having a well-deserved reward for all their hard work. Leah Turton

Online Enrolments - Kindergarten 2021 Do you have a child who will be starting school in 2021? If so the online enrolment is accessed through the school website. See ENROLMENT tab at top of page. The Online Enrolment System is designed to provide flexibility for parents to submit an Application to Enrol in a NSW Government School online at a time that best suits you. The application can be accessed on all browsers and mobile devices including iOS and Android. The online application process is currently restricted to:

• Enrolments into local schools only

• Children who are Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens or permanent residents

• Children who live in NSW. We offer our support and encourage you to complete your application to enrol online. If however, you do not feel comfortable completing an application online, a paper copy will be available for collection from the front office or can be downloaded from the Department’s going to a public school site. Year 2/3 Art This week class 2/3 read the book ‘Twig’ by Aura Parker. It is a story about a stick insect finding her way in a new school. We took inspiration from this text for our art lesson this week. All we needed was a stick, some coloured wool and glue to make our sticks change from being camouflaged, to bright and beautiful!

Lost in a Book Expo Congratulations to all of our students in Years 3-6 who produced such wonderful work as part of our Lost in a Book Expo in Week 5. It was so fantastic to be able to see the variety of amazing stories that our students have been immersing themselves in, and their depth of knowledge on their chosen texts. Their costumes, dioramas and even their food inspired from the books showed that our students are excited to be putting all of their efforts back into their learning and are taking pride in producing their personal best work! Well done EVERYONE!

Pretty Beach PS Staff Thankyou Lunch Dear Parents/ Caregivers, As a token of appreciation to all the wonderful staff who have put in so much time and effort with online learning, support, Minilit, communication, videos and generally trying to keep the kids in a somewhat normal school routine during these unprecedented times that no one has ever experienced before. We thought that a lunch for the staff at school catered by a local business (Hardy’s Bistro) on Wednesday 17th of June would be a nice way of saying thank you. If each child could please bring in $2, it will cover the cost of the lunch, a buffet lunch dessert and drink (non-alcoholic). A bucket will be placed in the front office for the children to put their coin in. It would be much appreciated If you could please pay by Friday 12th June so we can finalise payment with the Bistro. Many Thanks Prue Burgin, Kristen Redman and Parent Class Reps. Due to this there won’t be any borrowing of school library books at the moment. Premiers Reading Challenge A reminder all students are being be encouraged to take part in this year’s Premiers Reading Challenge (PRC). As mentioned in previous newsletters, students record books they read on their PRC electronic log. The different rules for Kindergarten to Year 2 and Years 3 to 6, are still available on the PBPS Home Learning page on our school website. (Use the hyperlinks to help you). We will once again be adding books read to Kindergaten to Year 2 students during lessons, but you can add any books you read at home. To add PRC books go to PRC page to login and use the same DoE login students use at school. If students aren’t sure how to login or how to find appropriate books see the PRC student page to help. The PRC started at the beginning of the March and continues until 30 August 2020. Due to the content in most of the books these are restricted to Years 3 to 6 students. There are also age restrictions with these books and if students get a restricted message ‘Unavailable’ it is because the book is for older students. There are almost 2000 books available to borrow this way with new books recently added.
