Tēna koutou katoa- Greetings to you all Maths Whizz Evening It was great to see so many parents in attendance last night at the parents Maths Whizz evening led by Mr Rennie, Mrs Adams and Mr Mitchell. For those parents who weren’t able to attend I have included some of the questions asked by our parents and responded to by staff. Q1. When does the money get changed over from sterling to dollars? Response: Current understanding is that this change should already have occurred and Mr Rennie would email the administrators to ascer- tain progress - expectation is within this month. Q2. Is Maths Whizz aligned with the New Zealand Curriculum? Response: It is very close to the NZ Curriculum and is in the process of being aligned. Q3. Are teachers monitoring the programme? Response: Yes! Teachers are able to access individual profile sheets. Teachers do need to work out how to communicate a paperless full report to parents. Parental request for teachers to contact parents if there is a decline in progress and application and vice versa from the parents to the teacher. Q4. How can we be sure that each student is working at their level and not at a level that is too easy for them? Response: Students can’t make it easier for themselves. It is critical that parents do not tell their child the answer. Neither should parents support their child when they are undertaking a test or the child will be programmed at a higher level and continue to struggle. Students need to be able to struggle so they can problem solve for themselves and work through their challenges. The role of the parent is to be supportive and not “tell” the answer. If the parent tells the correct response then who is doing the learning? How is the student going to be able to transfer and apply this knowledge in another situation if they do not own the learning in the first place? Parents need to inform the teacher if a child is really struggling and continues to struggle. Q5. How much time should students spend on Maths Whizz at home or at school? Response: It is vital to do both. Students need to organise their own time and should be spending 60 - 90 mins combined time between home and school in tutor mode and any extra time in replay mode. If students are unable to gain online access at home; access is available before and after school and at lunchtime if students or parents pre arrange the time with the teacher. Many thanks to Grace Ingram and Dylan McDonald who demonstrated the different components of Maths Whizz to the parent group. Parents need to remember that teachers are working closely with all of their students to ensure that each student is able to navigate Maths Whizz independently and their progress is monitored. If you have any further queries or questions please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher. Community Cooking Evening I have spoken with the Lentfer family, who appreciate the incredible support from the school and community. Taite can now move his fingers and toes but is immobile and unable to communicate. By Grace Ingram, age 10 (Room 7)

On Sunday the 3rd of May, many students represented the school at the FIFA World Cup kids tournament on the Te Awamutu Intermediate school field. We had three teams; Germany, Argentina and of course New Zealand.

We played against lots of other great teams but not as good as Germany. Germany was made up of nine students, Bodie Mathieson, Flynn Wooten, Emily Butterfield, Zoë Wooten, James Lowther, Erin Butterfield, Cayden Mathieson and also Jack and Oliver Hogg. Germany won the trophy and many more great prizes including a soccer ball bag, a new soccer ball and some drink bottles for the team.

Everyone enjoyed the day, the sun was shining, there was no rain and lots of laughs and screams from the side lines. A big thank you to Manu Jones for arranging all of the teams and the parents and supporters. We had lots of fun!

By Emily Butterfield, age 11 (Room 8)

Ōhaupō Scouts would like to say thank you for the use of the school hall on Friday night, 24th April, for our ANZAC family sleep-over. We had a great night, played lots of games, and made some ANZAC biscuits to share with the community, after leading the ANZAC parade to the cenotaph.
