Ngā mihi mahana kia koutou katoa, Greetings to you all…

Ngā Hui Heke, the three regional hui of Literacy Aotearoa, were very

well attended by Ngā Poupou* personnel including managers,

governance members and tutors. Thank you to the hosts: Adult

Literacy Franklin in Pukekohe, Literacy Aotearoa Hawke’s Bay in Napier,

and Literacy Aotearoa Dunedin for your generous hospitality. The

theme for 2015 ‘Tūturu - Keeping it Real’ continues to provide a

framework for the conversations held locally and nationally.

Each of the hui included a national focus with discussions about

priorities for the next five years, developing the strategic plan, an

environmental scan, the review of the Constitution, and considering the

best structure for the organisation as a whole. The ACE Contestable

Funding Round was also included for the hui agenda for Regions One

and Three. National Office staff attending the hui included Te Tumuaki

Bronwyn Yates, Brenda Munro, Carol Atkin, Manogi Tavelia and Alison

McNab as well as the regional Te Kōruru representatives. Local flavour

was provided by guest speakers from local communities, businesses

and education providers.

Literacy Aotearoa has received ACE funding from TEC for a number of

years. This year, for the first time, Literacy Aotearoa needs to submit

an application for ACE funding as TEC has opened up the ACE in

Communities funding to all community organisations, rural education

activities programmes (REAP) providers and registered private training

establishments (PTEs).

Discussions at the Region One and Three Hui clarified the input required from Ngā Poupou in order to

complete the application. Ngā Poupou have since provided their information to national office, to be

collated and submitted to TEC by 5 Pipiri (June) 2015.

Each hui provided an opportunity for Poupou to share their learnings from The Warehouse Ltd. Workplace

Programmes delivered in 2014. A panel of Poupou personnel discussed the steps involved in developing and

implementing a workplace programme. They shared the successes and the challenges, and explained how

issues were resolved. Resources developed specifically for the workplace setting were given to each Poupou

on Written (Emails) and Oral Communication (Reflective Listening).

Local Highlights from Ngā Hui Heke – the Regional Hui

He tangata, he tangata, he tangata:

Each hui was a great success due to the enormous support from the hosting

Poupou. Guest speakers from industry and community made connections

and helped to ‘keep it real’.

Te Heke Tuatahi (1): Adult Literacy Franklin in Pukekohe

Participants were welcomed to the hui by Kaumatua Whare Hiku. Guest

Speaker Andrew Baker, Chair, Franklin Local Board spoke about the ‘Super

City’. Simon Watson, (Managing Director NZ Hothouse Ltd.) represented

the Pukekohe Vegetable Growers Association (PVGA), the largest employer

in the region. Simon spoke about the many reading tasks required of

workers in the horticulture industry.

Workshops included ‘Weaving with Numbers’ and the manager of the

Pukekohe Library discussing resources. Participants received a kete of

taonga including freshly harvested riwai (potatoes) from local growers. The

hui made the local news in the Franklin County News.

Te Heke Tuarua (2): Literacy Aotearoa Hawke’s Bay in Napier

Students from William Colenso College welcomed participants with a

pōwhiri. Guest speaker Dr Salomé Meyer (Education Advisor, EIT) gave a

presentation entitled ‘Embedding Literacy and Numeracy at EIT through the

TEC Progressions and Assessment Tool’. Hui participants were invited to

attend a Wine tour, visiting Church Road Winery and The Mission Estate

Winery.

An election was held for the Te Kōruru Tauiwi Representative for Te Heke

Tuarua, Region Two. Both incumbent member, Ian Miller and Chris

Richardson had been nominated by Poupou in this region. Chris was elected

as the new Te Kōruru representative and he has been congratulated by all

for his election to the role. Ian has been an effective, humble and valuable

thought leader in his time with Te Kōruru and we take this opportunity to

acknowledge him. Ian will continue to meet his Te Kōruru duties up until Te

Hui ā Tau (AGM) in Hongōngoi (July) 2015.

Te Heke Tuatoru (3): Literacy Aotearoa Dunedin at Otakou Marae

Otakou Marae overlooking the harbour was a stunning location for all

participants. Guest speaker Victoria Campbell, Ngai Tahu Initiative spoke

about the history of Te Reo Māori in Otago and the stories that are told

through ta moko and carvings. She also spoke of advocating for influence,

cohesion and coordination to revitalise Te Reo Māori. Sandy Mckay’s ‘Real

Stories’ Writing Workshop highlighted the sense of identity and a shared

sense of history that can be created through story telling.

Participants were invited to take a short wildlife cruise on Dunedin’s famous

‘Monarch’, to view the beautiful scenery and the southern albatross colony,

NZ fur seals and little blue penguins.

What is a RealMe account?

Literacy North Otago, in conjunction with WINZ

has developed a 2-hour programme called

‘Getting on Line with New Zealand Government

Departments’.

The purpose of the programme is to create a

RealMe Account.

From the RealMe website:

‘A RealMe login lets you access multiple online

services with the same username and password.

The service is designed to protect your privacy

and security, so you can confidently use your

RealMe login in many places, saving you from

remembering lots of different logins. By verifying

your identity once by applying online and taking

a trip to your local New Zealand Post retail

outlet, you can use it at participating

organisations to prove who you are online many

times.’

It is a Government objective that by 2017 70% of

all interactions with Government Departments

will be done online using the RealMe Account.

Government departments include: IRD, Work &

Income, Ministry of Social Development, ACC,

Department of Internal Affairs, Electoral
