COLES 'SPORTS FOR SCHOOLS' PROGRAM

MacKillop has registered for the 2018 Coles Sports for Schools program. Now all you have to do is collect as many vouchers as you can from 7th February to 15th June. This is how it works:

Step 1: For every $10 spent a Coles you will receive one Sports for Schools voucher

Step 2: Bring your vouchers to school and place them in the collection box in the office

Step 3: Every voucher received will go towards a tally. MacKillop will then be able to order the sports equipment to the value of the vouchers.

Start collecting now!

PRAYERS

Please remember in your prayers anyone who is

sick within our community.

Viviene Zimmerlie-Kanak (Leonard and Ruby’s

PARENTS AND FRIENDS ASSOCIATION Each Catholic school in Queensland has a P&F Association, all parents and carers whose children are enrolled at the school are automatically members of the P&F. The Parents & Friends Association is an integral part of the Catholic school. It provides a formal structure and support network for parents to participate in the activities and decision making processes at the school, and to work for the benefit of the school and their children. The P&F represents the interests of the whole parent body. It helps parents engage with the school and the education of their children. It works to support the school. This means that parents are partners with the teachers and the

principal in the education of their children and consequently parents share the responsibility of educating their children with the

teaching staff. Parents and families are the first teachers of their children and have the right and the responsibility to be engaged with their children’s education. Research shows that children do better at school when parents continue to be engaged throughout their children’s years at school. The P&F can facilitate this engagement. The P&F must operate within its constitution and is obliged to adhere to the aims, objectives and general principles which are written into the constitution. Some activities of the P&F as taken from the website www.pandf.org.au includes: a) to develop a community spirit – with a Christian ethos b) support and work in partnership with principal and staff c) promote interaction between home and school, parents and teachers d) encourage parent participation in teaching and learning activities and school life e) assist parents to appreciate teaching and learning programs f) promote the school in the wider community g) Attention to faith education activities h) create a forum for discussion i) assist in providing resources to the school when necessary j) planning and organising of functions approved by a P&F Meeting and the Principal k) work with parish and school board in pursuit of common goals – harmony. l) participate in decision making

The P&F AGM will be held in the library on Monday 12

th March at

7.00pm. It would be wonderful to see some new faces. A normal meeting follows the AGM. If you wish to be involved in setting future goals for the school and to work towards achieving them then this is the ideal venue for you to have your say. Please come along. If you are interested in taking on an executive role – President, Vice-President, Secretary or Treasurer please see myself or a member of the current P&F Executive. Remember Dads are also welcome to take on an executive role.

PREP ENROLMENTS 2019 Enrolments for Prep are currently being taken for the 2019 school year. If you have a child due to commence Prep next year born between July 1, 2013 and June 30, 2014 please complete an enrolment form available from the school office or download from the school’s website. Enrolments for Years 1—6 are also currently being taken for 2019. When returning the enrolment form, please ensure there is a certified copy of your child’s birth certificate,

baptismal certificate & immunisation records. It is essential that we have our current families accounted for so that we know the number of places available for new families. We need to sight the original birth certificate or have a certified copy please.

STUDENTS WITH PHONES

I would like to remind parents about our expectations and procedures regarding students bringing personal devices (mainly phones) to school. I understand that parents may have very deliberate and practical reasons for allowing their child to bring a phone to school. If parents deem it absolutely necessary for their child to have a phone, I ask for your assistance to advise your child to hand their device to the office please for safe keeping. While at school, students have no reason or need to continue to have their phone on their person or in their bag. This will also keep the device safe. Thank you for your assistance with this matter.

TRIPLE P

Don’t let parenting worries keep you up at night!

The results from Triple P’s annual parenting survey are in! Encouraging kids to be healthy, managing screen time and dealing with kids’ emotions are the three biggest worries keeping Queensland parents up at night right now. Triple P founder Professor Matt Sanders says the best thing parents can do to encourage positive behaviour is to lead by example. Kids who grow up with positive parenting do better at school and in life. Parents who do Triple P are also less stressed and depressed. Triple P is free in Queensland – do it online, in seminars or groups, or one-on-one. Visit www.triplep-parenting.net

FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT – Weekend of 10/11 March

Readings: Yr B: 2 Chr 36:14-16, 19-23; Eph 2:4-10; Jn 3:14-21

The symbolism in today’s readings remind us of the richness of God’s mercy and grace.

The first reading recalls the struggles of the people of God to remain faithful to God and to remember God’s promises to them through the prophets. The role of the prophet in biblical times was to preserve in the people the reality that they were precious in God’s eyes and that God was always present with them.

In the Gospel today we see Jesus speaking with Nicodemus. The same Nicodemus we are told a few verses earlier, who came to Jesus by night [John 3:10-12]. In the scriptures night is often associated with secrecy and darkness. In contrast, later in John's Gospel, Jesus tells us he is the "light of the world."

As the Church continuously revisits the long history of God’s relationship with God’s people, Caritas Australia takes this opportunity to revisit and explore the impact of its relationships. We first heard about Evangeline, a young First Australian woman a couple of years ago. She lives in the remote community of Beswick in the Northern Territory. Evangeline’s work is, of itself, life-giving for her and her community. She helps to

preserve and bring into the light her own precious gifts and talents and the art and culture of her people. We are blessed by their willingness to share their gifts with the broader Australian community. In doing this, like St Paul reminds us, we are "God’s work of art. Just as Evangeline is shining a light on her culture and lore for future generations, we can ask ourselves: how are we living in Christ’s light?

PROJECT COMPASSION Fourth Week of Lent

Evangeline is strengthening Aboriginal culture

while making a living and creating

opportunities for her community. Featured in

Project Compassion during 2016, Evangeline

went from seeking employment to being a

Senior Artsworker and an inspirational leader

for youth. Her work at the non-profit Djilpin

Arts Aboriginal Corporation has supported the

organisation’s growth and it is now a major

employer for young people in the remote

Northern Territory community. Please donate

to Project Compassion 2018 and help provide employment and training

for First Australians, allowing them to remain on country and keep their

culture alive, essential for a just future.

A Just Future starts with your support! You can donate through Project

Compassion boxes/envelopes, visit

www.caritas.org.au/projectcompassion or phone 1800 024 413.

Welcome parents/carers to the new school year! Parenting can be rewarding and sometimes challenging. As an accredited Triple P Primary Care practitioner, I can assist you in a one-to-one format to develop plans to manage behavioural issues (e.g. tantrums, fighting, sharing, swearing etc.) and skill development issues (e.g. staying in bed at night, eating independently, toilet training, etc.). I can provide 1 to 4 sessions (15-30 minutes each), depending on what would work for you. Sessions can be done in person, over the phone, or as a combination of both. If the Primary Care style does not suit your circumstances, I’d be happy to provide information around the wide range of Triple P formats available. Please contact me if you would like to discuss further. Kat Dunn [email protected]

Prep J Elliana Harriott

You really surprised Mrs Jansen last week when you read words from a chart. Most of the sentences had sight words we had learnt in it and then you worked out the other words. Super reader!

Hayden Moore You independently made the numbers 1 to 5 from

playdough and then you correctly ordered them. What a terrific effort Hayden!

Billy Nielsen For your awesome representation of numbers.

You were clever in forming your playdough into sausages and then making the numbers 1 to 6 in order.

1P Baylen Smith I have been so impressed with the way that you

are able to log yourself on to the computer quickly and get started on our activities straight away. It is also wonderful to see you helping your classmates with this task. Keep up the super work Baylen!

Emelia Taylor Thanks for listening so carefully during our

Baptism role plays. You have often helped your classmates remember the different parts of the Baptismal ceremony and the special words that are spoken when the water is poured over the baby’s head. Awesome effort Emelia!

2D Aaron Peever This week you could clearly create patterns that

used the number 18. You brainstormed four different patterns and shared them with your group members. I thought it was very clever when you counted in 6’s.

Saige Sharpe Saige, you created a range of patterns that used

the number 18 during this week’s problem solving task. I loved hearing the way you explained your patterns to your group members and how you could identify that they were counting in 2’s and 6’s.

2N Harry Cundell I am so impressed by your willingness to learn,

Harry. You are attentive and eager to start every lesson. Your enthusiasm is infectious. Well done.

Reid Paskins For working very well this week Reid. You have

listened carefully to instructions and completed your tasks in a timely manner with great care. Awesome work.

3CR Poppy Greatz In recognition of your wonderful story writing. You

are using great ideas and really focussing on structuring your story with a sizzling start, a tightening tension and an explosive ending! I am really impressed with the way you are listening intently and applying your new learning to your existing knowledge!

Eve Oliver You are a model student, Eve! Each day you

listen intently and give of your best in each subject area. This week, I have been impressed by your interest in our Godly play sessions. You are able to clearly retell the Biblical story through a story map and identify the moral message behind the scripture. You are keen to create your own Godly play, based on the Parable of the Great Pearl – and I have a sneaking suspicion you will do a tremendous job!

4C Joe Dlask You have put a great effort into writing your

Dreaming story this week Joe. I’m impressed with the way you have tried hard to include descriptive word choices and varied sentence

beginnings. Keep it up! Olivia Pennisi Thank you for always taking pride in the

presentation of your work and giving 100% effort in all tasks. Excellent work Olivia!

4M Kirra Bruton Your narrative, ‘How the Red-Tailed Black

Cockatoo got its red colour’, has all the traits of becoming an excellent Dreamtime story. You had the right ideas for your topic, beginning with a sizzling start and your choice of words made your story interesting and engaging. Awesome work Kirra.

Lily Masters Lily, you have worked very hard this week to have

your Dreaming narrative written and published before you began your Aboriginal dot painting. Lovely to see you prioritising your work to do what you love to do best – Paint! Well done Lily.

5K Ryan Camilleri For your perseverance. You will continue to ask

questions until you gain a greater understanding. Thank you for your determination in class.

Mason Anderson Marvellous, magnificent use of mental muscle

power to write amazing and awesome alliterations using the letters M and A.

6PG Jasmine Gale For your ‘Teamwork at School!’ You worked

productively with your classmate to carry out research for our English activity. You confidently presented your ideas, yet were always willing to listen to and consider someone else’s ideas. Fabulous effort, Jasmine!

Sarina Hooper For your very interesting oral presentation! We

were all fascinated by the survival story of your great, great grandmother, who survived a shipwreck on the 28

th of February, the same day

as your birthday, but 117 years earlier – and the same day you presented your oral! Amazing! Great work, Sarina!

6R Jude Ackerman Your response to our Open-ended Question in

Maths this week was out of this world! You represented your fractions as common fractions in lowest form, as decimal fractions, with diagrams, as percentages, equivalent fractions and in words. You then bumped up your learning to show a mixed number in all these different ways. You are officially AMAZING!!

Jack Fogarty You have been a wonderful support in the way

you have put your technology skills to work. You confidently navigated Google Drive to draft your persuasive writing and you used your knowledge to support others. Thank you also for your much appreciated help managing the PowerPoint during our Mass practices.

PE Award Ciarne Giles For your amazing teamwork! You are an asset to

your team and always working well with others in PE lessons. Well done!!

Chase Jewell For your excellent fielding skills in cricket this

week. Well done Chase!! Principal’s

Award Amelia Hopton

In recognition of your kind, caring and humble nature. You are such a lovely friend to your peers.
