Term 1 Magazine 2016

At the beginning of each year all students take part in our ‘data collection’ week. During this week students complete the Progressive Achievement Tests (PAT) in Reading, Spelling, Vocabulary and Maths. These formal tests help teachers group students for Literacy and Numeracy and also help inform their initial planning and programming for the year. Students will sit these tests again in term 3 in order to track their progress and ensure they are still in the correct groupings. While the PAT testing is an important method of informing teachers of a students learning, it is used in conjunction with other forms of data collection such as work samples, observations, anecdotes and pre and post unit data collection. This all helps us cater for the needs of the individual and ensure that they are provided with learning tasks that are at just the right level.

Data Collection Week

Blended Learning

A major focus for the school this year has been the introduction of our blended learning. At Mylor we value that children all learn in different ways and that learning does not stop when a child leaves the schoolyard. To cater for this we have opened up the classroom to our families and aim to offer a range of different channels through which students can gather and digest the information required to produce their work. These generally include:

• small-group teacher-guided discussion

• one-to-one teacher guidance

• third-party podcasts and videos

• online resources.

2016 has seen the introduction of the ‘Mylorlearn’ weebly. This website hosts all of the individual websites teachers have created for each unit of work. Students can access these at school during lesson time, and also access them at home to share their learning with parents or to help reinforce or extend their learning.

2016 has also seen the introduction of the Seesaw app. This app is designed to track and monitor student learning and to keep parents informed on the children’s progress towards their learning goals.

Mrs Jones’

Literacy Group This term in Literacy we mostly did Speech Sound Pics (SSP) learning that helped us practice our reading and our writing. We do the Speedy Six activities using duck hands, whiteboard activities and lots of sounding-out games. We also do Rapid Writing, which is when we write as much as we can in 30 minutes and then we practice the trickier words together. Sometimes we use a picture to help us with writing ideas and sometimes we choose our own things to write about. The best bit about SSP is when we are reading and somehow we know how to read things that we couldn’t read before. We also like watching the SSP videos and using the SSP iPad app. This year in SSP we have learnt how to play a lot of new sound games together. By Mrs Jones’

Miss K’s Literacy Group This term our literacy group has been learning to write persuasive texts. We have looked at the purpose of the text (to persuade someone), the structure and the language. We all have a good understanding of the structure and are correctly using paragraphs. We have also looked at the modality and have worked hard to choose words and phrases to help make our arguments stronger. Our assessment piece of writing was to choose someone you look up to or see as a hero and to persuade Miss K why that person deserves a medal. These pieces of writing have been typed up and the students will present their persuasive text with a medal to their hero. We found that having a ‘real life’ audience and purpose for this task made it enjoyable and engaging.

This term Mr Fraser’s literacy group have been focused on learning about figurative language and the structure and features of persuasive texts. Students have been trying to grasp the concept of similes, metaphors and personification through creating their own poetry. As a class we were finding it hard to create metaphors without accidently turning them in to similes, but overtime and a little persistence we were able to create our very own imaginative metaphors. One of the activities involved the students producing three drafts of a three-line simile and metaphor poem inspired by one of four provided photos in just one hour. This short timeframe also had to allow for two short peer feedback sessions, which were designed to help further develop the students ideas. The students produced some great work, see following page.

Our work on persuasive texts this term has helped the students to understand the structure and language features of persuasive texts and the importance of providing, giving and using feedback. We will continue our work with persuasive texts next term as we look at the different forms it can take. We have looked at persuasive arguments and cartoons (see examples above) this term and will focus more on discussion texts and advertisement next term.

Tall as the sky, the mountain stands proud

The Watrefall (by Ella)

Pretty as a picture drawn by Leonardo de Vinci The water is crystal clear

It flows freely like beautiful hair in the wind.

Numeracy

This term in Numeracy we learned about lots of things like numbers, addition, shapes and patterns. When we learnt about shapes we got to learn a funny shape song that we watched on our Weebly page. One of our favourite things was patterns because we made patterns with shapes, colours, numbers, art and lots of different kinds of things. Some of us even got to learn about growing patterns which is when something keeps getting bigger and bigger in the same pattern, like the number might double each time. The pictures on this page show some of our growing patterns. We also figured out that skip counting is a type of pattern. By Blake and Rahni

Miss K’s Numeracy Group

This term our numeracy group has been learning about geometry and fractions. We have also spent part of our time learning our times tables.

In geometry we learned about 3D shapes and their properties. We made shapes from nets and got frustrated trying to draw 3D shapes. We learned about grid references and mapping and had fun making our own treasure maps with instructions for our friends to follow. We learned about right, obtuse and acute angles and some students learned to measure angles with a protractor. We also learned about symmetry, tessellations, flip, slide and turn.

In fractions we have started to learn how to write, draw, model and represent fractions. We cut up food to demonstrate them. We have also looked at fractions on a number line. Sometimes this can be a bit difficult, but we will do more work on this next term.

This term our main focus has been around angles. We have been measuring, estimating, identifying, and creating angles, as well as finding missing angles in whole variety of different situations. The year 7 students have had a lot to cover in this area, including investigating various different angle relationships as well working with identifying different triangles and quadrilaterals and their angles. Most of the Year 5 and some of the Year 6 students were able to complete their angle work half way through the term and move on to working with 2D and 3D shapes. They have been focusing on understanding how 2D nets can be used to create a 3D shape, they have been creating their own nets and getting involved in hands on activities to create their own 3D shapes. This term has also seen the introduction of the Weebly website, we have started using the Weebly ‘Measurement & Geometry’ website in Numeracy, this site enables students to be provided with activities on the areas that they in particular need to work on and provides tutorials and information that can be revisited by the student at anytime.

David & Claire Price – PBL Workshop

On Wednesday the 2nd of March the staff had the opportunity to work with David and Claire Price for an intensive day of Project Based Learning (PBL) professional development. This was the first time staff have taken the same personalised approach to learning that we do with our students, by inviting David and Claire to work only with the Mylor staff. We all found that this was one of the most beneficial professional development days that we had attended, as all of the learning was relevant to Mylor, our students and their learning. Over the course of the day we revised exactly what PBL is and the reason we use it at Mylor, took part in a rapid prototype session, where we had 1 hour to complete a project task as a group (as if we were students) and then spent time working on our ‘Inside Out’ units and running ideas past David and Claire about our term 2 units. The feedback and advice we received throughout the day was invaluable, and we hope that it will help us continue to develop higher quality units for our students. “This day of training was very valuable, I got a lot out of it and felt that the whole day was presented well, we moved through the content efficiently and both David and Jane were very easy to talk to and share ideas with. A thoroughly enjoyable and profitable experience.”

Last Friday the 18th of March Tyson & Georgia represented the Hills in the 2016 Country Swimming Championships at SA Aquatic & Leisure Centre. ‘When we first got to the Aquatic and Leisure Centre we both got SAPSASA merchandise, including a jumper, cap and a badge each to wear on our school uniforms. After having a team photo we got to sit in the best seats in the house and watch the freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke races before we could compete in our individual butterfly races. All of the Hills representatives sat together in the grandstands to support and cheer each other on.’ Tyson’s race was first – he automatically made the finals without even getting into the water so his first individual race for the day was the 10-year-old boy 50m butterfly final. Tyson broke his personal best time of 54.0 seconds by completing the race in 52.0 seconds and came 5th in the final. Georgia’s first individual race for the day was the 12-year-old girl 50m butterfly heat, she narrowly missed out on making the finals, but also smashed her personal best of 50.0 seconds by completing the race in 45.0 seconds. Next came 4x50m freestyle relays. Tyson competed first and was the starter for his team. The team came third and won a bronze medal. Georgia then competed in the 4x50m freestyle relay and her team also came third winning a bronze medal, with their time being only 0.1 of a second off the silver medal. They both had a fantastic time competing for the Hills and while Georgia is sad to have competed in her last primary school race, she is looking forward to what she could achieve next year, and Tyson is excited to (hopefully) have the opportunity to compete for the Hills again next year. Mindfulness Masterclass As part of our Inside Out PBL Project, we had a visit from the counsellor at Heathfield High School, Ann Kellett. Mrs Kellett ran a Masterclass about mindfulness that helped to give us some ideas about how we can calm down in healthy ways when our feelings get hard to deal with. First we had some relaxation time, where we lay down and practiced doing “belly breathing” while we concentrated on relaxing different muscles. We learnt that a good way to feel calm is to stop what you are doing, take slow, deep breaths and concentrate on how many green things you can see around you (or any other colour). This helps to pause all of the other big thoughts and helps you to feel calm. Then we went to the adventure playground to practice being mindful outside, like when you sit quietly and hear all of the sounds happening around you. This made us feel calm too. We also got to use a Mindfulness Jar, which has glittery water all shaken up which is like our brains when we have big

feelings. If you sit and watch the glitter settle slowly then everything is easier to see and your brain doesn’t feel as shakey. This Masterclass gave us lots of good ideas to help with our project. By Mrs Jones’ PBL Group

INSIDE OUT PBL This term in PBL we have been doing a project about feelings and how to react to them in healthy ways, based on the movie Inside Out. We started by watching the movie over a week, pausing to talk about important bits and what each feeling was doing. Then for our first part of the project we had lots of group talks and did lots of artworks to say when we feel each feeling and what happens in our heads and our bodies with each one. After that we worked really hard to come up with helpful ideas of how to deal with each feeling in a healthy way. We made pages to be turned into a little book and we will give it to other schools and places that kids might need some help with feelings. For the last bit of the project we got to make our own Islands of Personality, like Riley had in

the movie. Our islands are nearly finished and we are going to present them with all the other learning we did next term. By Mrs Jones’ PBL Group

Mr Fraser’s and Miss K’s PBL groups used the movie “Inside Out’ as the hook for this terms PBL topic. We looked at our individual personality traits and the emotions we experience in personal and global situations. In small groups we researched issues that are relevant to children and made information pamphlets that will be printed and handed out to students from other schools. We had Matt Hardy come in to speak to us about how to write a pamphlet and he helped to plan the layout. We also had Leah Kennewell run a Masterclass about the brain.

In PBL this term, we have made mini islands from a length of a couple centimetres to as large as my arm. Those islands were based on things that we liked, family relationships and stuff that scare us. We also made a Power point, poster or mini book that told people how we felt when something happened. It took a while but it was worth it. Every single time I saw one from another person, it looked amazing. We also made some characters based from the ones in the movie “Inside Out” except to look like us. In the end, there were lots of funny creations that were based on those emotions. Last of all, we did a pamphlet on something that effected lots of people our age. They were filled with information, where to get more help and heaps of pictures. We are going to give them to the public and hopefully they will like them. Everyone’s looked great. This was an awesome way to start the year and I can’t wait to do it again.

Smart Savings Masterclass

In week 7 a lady from the Commonwealth Bank came in and talked about being “Money Smart” to us in different groups. In our group the lady turned into a super hero and taught us how to be Super Savers. We put all the Australian money coins and notes in order and practiced how to tell the difference between Wants and Needs when we’re spending money. If you spend your money on Needs then you can save the rest and have more when you are older to spend on Wants. By Mrs Jones’ Group

Our group learned about the difference between a key card and a credit card. One difference is a credit card is the bank’s money but a key card is your money. You can get a key card when you turn 12 and if your parents don’t want to give you a key card you can get one when you turn 16. But you have to turn 18 to get a credit card. She taught us a chant that went like this “spend some on you and save some too,” she also told us to call her Coach Cash. We did an activity we had to choose the best shoe-buying option. We had to choose whether to buy them online for $40, going to a shoe shop for $45 or another shop for $50 and getting a free can of jelly beans. One group chose to go to a shop to try them on and buy them online and another group chose to buy them at the first shop ($45 shop).

By Adi and Kari We learned how to save money by putting it in the bank and not taking it out for a few years so that it earns interest. She taught us some jobs that can help us get money and gave us the idea of starting our own businesses. We learned it is better to put your money in the bank instead of keeping it at home, because then you’re not tempted to take it use it for wants rather than needs. By Chloe and Sharni

Term 1 Music

This term we got all to do Music with Mrs Jones on Wednesday mornings for three weeks. We learnt a tricky clapping pattern and got to dance around the room to match our moves to feelings. We learnt some songs like Dingle Dangle Scarecrow and We’re Going On A Bear Hunt. Our favourite bit was playing on the instruments. The drums were pretty cool. By Zenji and Myf

This term served as an introduction to basic musical concepts for years R-7, allowing students to experiment with a variety of instruments and musical skills. Each student took part in individual, partner and group activities that allowed them to practice and apply their learning.

Older groups had the opportunity to create their own compositions on both hardcopy and the GarageBand app, using feedback from peers to revise and improve their creations. Students shared their original compositions with the group, demonstrating a strong start to our year in music.

Mrs Jones’ GroupArt

In Art we learned about warm and cool colours. We completed a range of activities to identify and sort warm and cool colours. Our first piece of artwork was an abstract painting using warm or cool colours. We placed masking tape on our canvas boards and then painted each shape a different colour. When we took the masking tape off it looked great. The second piece of work was also with warm and cool colours. For this one we chose a simple picture and then divided the page with lines. We coloured the shapes inside the picture with cool colours and the shapes in the background with warm colours.

Stan used cool colours on his abstract.

Iggy and Annabelle painting with warm colours.

Mr Fraser’s Group

Art

This term in Art we did ‘Pop Art’. First we looked at examples of pop art done by other people. We then took a photo with the comic book effect on photo booth and traced the outlined and filled the inside with dots of paint. This took us all 2 two-hour lessons to complete but the end product was definitely worth it. All of our masterpieces are currently on display in the art room for people to come and look at. Miss K’s Group

Art

In the first 3 weeks of this term Miss K’s group had art with Miss K in the art room. Our art project was self-portraits. We learned how to draw a portrait and we found out that when drawing a face that your eyes are actually in the centre of your face, that the shape of your face is more oval than round and that you can fit five eyes across the width of your face. It was interesting. We drew our self-portraits and then added colour with pencils.

The next part was making the frame. We traced and cut out a cardboard frame. Then we decorated it with pasta, wool, cardboard, doily and other things. Then we spray-painted it with gold and silver paint. When they were dry we put the frames on our drawing. We think they look great.

Kari finishing the final touches on her frame.

In week 1 of each three week block all year levels were asked to think about when they felt the five key emotions of joy, sadness, fear, disgust and anger and to try and use these memories as reference point for their emotional acting, they were also played nine very different songs while they moved around the space and were asked to act out how they made them feel and move. The other two weeks were spent developing our emotional acting, learning not always to act with high (full) emotion, but also learning to act only slightly angry or pretty happy as well as incredibly scared. Mrs Jones’ PBL group used sections from a book to help create short planned scenes and used games to pass feeling and emotions to each other. Mrs K’s PBL group experimented a lot with different levels of emotion and improvised scenes where different emotions and levels of emotion where played out by different actors in the same scene. Mr Fraser’s PBL group experimented with a whole variety of emotions, not just the key emotions and played them out in different situations, including emotional parties, where each guest enters with a different emotion, and family situation improvisations, where students act as different members of a family, each with a different emotion in a typical family situation (round the dinner table, on a long car trip, etc)

This term each PBL group worked with Mr Fraser for a three week period. Mr Fraser decided to use our PBL units as inspiration for our drama work, we focused on the use of emotion in our performance.

Anger Sadness Disgust

Physical Education

This year the children are taking part in PE lessons once a week. Each Wednesday the children are split into two groups, Year 1 – 4 and Year 5 – 7. During the 90-minute block the children have the chance to participate in different activities and learn new skills. At the beginning of the year the Year 1 – 4 children worked on different gross motor

skills such as hopping, skipping, jumping, balancing and ball skills. They also focussed a lot on what it is to ‘be a good sport’. This involved playing different group games where they had to co-operate with each other to be successful, share and encourage each other if someone made a mistake. The Year 5 – 7 children started off the year playing Lacrosse. They started the sessions practicing different skills, and then finished off playing a modified game. Even over the course of a few weeks, there were some big improvements in the children’s skills. Toward the end of the term our whole school PE focus shifted to practising for Sports Day. The older children focussed on different field events such as high jump, shot put and discus, while the younger kids focused more on the team games, as well as having a turn at long jump. Next term we are planning on incorporating health into the 90 minute sessions (especially as the weather gets colder and wetter).

Stirling Districts Kindergarten Visit

In week 9 we had a visit from the Stirling Districts Kindy. We got to teach them how to play lots of different activities like Lego, Watercolour Painting, Train Tracks, Chalk Drawing, Marble Run, Mobilo, Board Games and a lot more. They made some really pretty paintings. After we did the inside activities with them, we went out and had some play time together in the adventure playground. We really like it when the kindy kids come to visit

because we get to show them around and help them get ready for what it will be like to be a school kid. By Summer and Arabella

Gardening/Cooking Masterclass

This term we did cooking with Deanna and Helena. We used vegetables from the school garden. The first thing we cooked were spinach rolls. We thought

that they might be a little bit yucky because they had spinach in them, but they were actually delicious! When we picked the spinach some silly big kids decided to eat the chilli’s and burnt their mouths because they were so hot, except Kodi because he is tough. J When we were cooking we learnt that ricotta is a cheese, which some of us didn’t know. The next time we cooked we made muffins with apple, carrot and zucchini in them. We had to grate the carrot, apple and zucchini so it was small enough to go in the muffins. We all had lots of fun cooking and eating the really tasty muffins while they were still warm from the oven. We can’t wait to cook again next term. By Kaiden, Jonas & Arabella

Sports Day By Lucia & Lily

On Friday the 1st of April, we had our Combined School Sports Day at Mt. Lofty Oval. The first thing we did for the day was the health hustle. Sharni, Chloe and Ella stood out the front and showed the school what

to do. This year we had to dance to a mix up of different songs. After the health hustle the kids in year 3 – 7 went to the Heathfield High School Oval. We did high jump, hurdles, long jump, discus and shot put. We did each of the sports with kids from other schools. We liked that we could make new friends and got

to try different sports. The Reception – Year 2 children stayed on the Mt. Lofty Oval and did mini high jump, the morning

race, the egg and spoon race, sack race and the water relay. We all like doing the mini high jump because it was fun to jump onto the big mat.

After lunch we all got ready for the long run, sprints and relays. We all loved cheering for our school during the long run. It was really

exciting when we got to see people near the finish line. After the long run we did the sprints. In the sprints the fastest boy and girl from each year at each school ran 60m, 80m, or 100m. Lots of Mylor kids did really well, Lily came third in her race, Lucia won her race, Jonas won his race and we found out that we have lots of speedy kids at Mylor. Then we did the R-7 relay. In the relay Mylor

was coming fourth until right near the end, then Chloe ran really, really fast and overtook all the other schools and we won the race‼‼ J At the end of they day they

announced what school and what colour won. Mylor came third out of all of the schools and Red won. They also announced the champion boy and girl from each year level. Jasmine was the champion year 3 girl, Eirinn was the runner up year 5 boy, Tyson was the champion year 5 boy and Dan was the runner up year 6 boy.

We all had a really, really fun day and we can’t wait for next year!

On Tuesday the 5th of April 19 kids went to Heathfield High School to take part in Lunch ‘n’Crunch, along with 10 other schools. All together there were 65 teams made up of Year 4/5/6/7 children. We all broke up in to teams of 4 or 5 and went to different courts to play against other schools. The courts were inside, grass or sand. Only the year 6/7 teams could play on the sand. The year 6/7’s thought the beach volleyball courts

were the best because it was sand, you could take your shoes off and you could dive for the ball without getting hurt. It was also funny when people fell over trying to hit the ball back over the net. The indoor courts were also pretty good because you could slide across the court. It was so slippery, some of us fell over a lot. The grass courts were our least favourite because they were cold and wet and gave us grass stains. Overall we had a great morning playing volleyball and meeting new people. By Cordy & Ebony

District Athletics On Monday the 11th of April 15, year 5/6/7 kids went to District Athletics Day at Oakbank Area School. Before we went each child nominated which event they wanted to do. There were track and field events. The track events were 100m, 200m, 800m and relays. The field events were discus, high jump, long jump and shot put. Some people chose to only do track events, some only chose field and some did both. The first event was the 800m run, then 100m sprints and 200m sprints. In between all of the track events the field events were held. It was a good experience getting to compete against people from other schools. We had a mixture of

results across the school. Some people only competed in the heats, some competed in the finals and a few even placed in their finals. Dan made the finals for 12 year-old boy 100m, Tyson made the final for 10 year old boy 100m and Georgia came second in the shot put and discus.

All in all in had a fun day, enjoyed the sunshine and did our daily exercise. By Kodi & Ned

It has been a great start to the year at Mylor.

It was exciting to see so many new students this term. To make them feel at home, I made some special “welcome packs” with a few goodies (a bouncy ball, stickers etc.) and a letter introducing myself. Later in the term we had a “get to know you” session, where we played a couple of games and I gave the new students the opportunity to ask questions about myself, and the school. It was also an opportunity to see how they were settling in. The response was positive; they said they had quickly made new friends and they liked the relaxed, community feel.

I had the opportunity to work one on one with a few students. Whether it be working on a special project or just taking some time out draw pictures and chat, it has been really enjoyable to spend this time with them. I see this as an important opportunity for me just to listen as they share what is on their mind. Sometimes it takes a little convincing to get them back up to class again, but when they do they are ready and focused to get back into work.

I have also been listening to the younger students read. It is so exciting to work with them, especially the new receptions, as they start to learn their letters and sounds.

Easter Activities were good fun and with the help of Jo Telfer (thanks Jo) we made Easter baskets ready for the egg hunt. Everyone could choose between a bunny or a chicken; although a few students got creative and turned their chickens into very cute looking cats! There was lots of colouring, cutting and gluing, but happily not too much mess. Once the baskets were finished, the Easter Bunny hid eggs around the school yard, and the children used their new baskets to collect their chocolates J

It has also been great to take part in events such as Sports Day and Science Block. At Sports Day I saw everyone give the events a go even if they didn’t really like sport or were a little scared. It was great to see students (young and old alike) cheering and running alongside each other throughout the day. The science projects are always a good chance to think outside the box and show initiative and they always rise to the challenge.

With many exciting things planned, I look forward to the rest of the year.

Jo Sarah Stanford, PCW

Term 1 OSHC

Welcome to our new year. We have welcomed 6 new families to our service and it didn’t take long for them to be part of our OSHC family. Construction has been a big part of our afternoons with the children building

and designing castles, shops and other wonderful creations. We are currently collecting 2L milk and juice bottles as we will be creating a igloo. We have been working on a Mother’s Day stall for week 1 next term. We will be selling beautiful gifts for your mums (nothing over $5). The stall will be open during the first week of term 2 in the library. Enjoy the holidays – Jenny & the ‘OSHCIANS’

Voxiebox Masterclass To open our first Science Block of 2016 Will and Gavin from Voxiebox came and talked to us all about the Voxiebox and Science First they did a quiz with all of us about inventions. We had to guess if they had already been made or not. Some of the inventions were – rescue robots, really tall towers, a watch that turns into a quad copter and takes photos. Some of the things that weren’t invented yet were – hoverboards, teleporters, a TV pen, houses that have trees growing out of them and micro robots that go in your blood. Then they talked to us about being inventors and how they invented the Voxiebox in their shed from an idea they had when they were kids. Then they showed us the Voxiebox, we thought it was the coolest thing

in the world. The Voxiebox shows holograms of all sorts of different things like dragons, skeletons, the world, animals, people and games. Most of us got to have a go at playing the different games. They are different to normal computer games because they are 3D and up to 4 people could play at once.

We all loved seeing and playing with the Voxiebox and can’t wait until we can buy one. By Summer, Jonas & Zenji *More Science articles to follow next term*
